What exactly is ROM???? - General Questions and Answers

Hey guys,
I know I am going to sound really newby, but that is true in this PDA world for me. I recently got my HTC love, and I really love the phone.
I have surfed XDA for quite a while, and I am truly amazed at the number of PDA users. It truly is a great collection, but I have not been able to find answers to these questions. The search option has not helped much but give me several different ROM types and versions, but I dont know what exactly they are so can someone help me out on these questions please:
What exactly is ROM?
What is Flashing ROM?
Different languages of ROM?
Manila 2D ROM? Kaiser ROM? Diamond ROM?
It would be really kind if someone could answer these questions.
I appreciate your time.
Thank You

ROM stands for Read Only Memory and is the part of your phone's memory where the Operating System is stored - equivalent if you like to XP or Vista on the PC.
Flashing the ROM refers to replacing the ROM that came with your phone with another - usually written or "cooked" by enthusiasts who build in there own programs and preferences. Flashing is best done after much study as there is a chance you can wreck your phone. If you want to modify your phone it is best to start off using CAB files.
Yes there are different languages of ROMs available. A Manila2D ROM would have the Manila2D interface built into it. Kaiser and Diamond are other phones in the HTC range.

My phone slows down with the cab files, and I can see how memory plays a part there.
Also installing manila 2d was way too laggy, I kind of want more memory and space available.
So if I do the flash ROM, and have this huge ROM space, all I have to do later is to install cab files on ROM right?
Thanks for your reply Restorer.

yes but this is the quick answer thread ok lets see.
The Phone has memory to run programs like virtual memory and storage memory partitioned (as fake) on some provided to Operative system's phone... I mean Wizard has a little and other phone has so much more... why? cause it needs more program memory or the app are more heavy ok?
well diamond ROM... Wizard ROM... hermes ROM.... here we said it as the develops on cooks some Operative systems for each other device specially for that device ok?
See you soon.

this is the questions an answers section, in otherwords if someone has a question give them an answer. if you are going to say "read the wiki" you need to atleast give them a link on where to start, otherwise you are just spamming.
now to ANSWER the question....
yes you can install cabs, its still windows mobile its just like when you a get a computer from dell, dell will give you windows but they will also give you a bunch of "Dell-ware" (usually a bunch of useless shareware someone is paying them to load on their computers)
When you get a new rom you still get windows you just get a choice at what you want on your phone, instead of what your service provider thinks they might be able to sell you or what they think you will use.
You can get roms in all different flavors, anything from something striped down to the very core of the operating system, or something loaded with multimedia features, or something based around a program such as a manilla rom.
to read up on this go here, MAKE SURE YOU READ, if you follow direction you will be fine but if you just jump in without reading everything you will brick your phone.

Here is some good readin that will answer some of your questions....

please help the newbie!!!!

I have a Qtek 9100 with wm5, when I start it up it reads:
Ipl 2.17.0001
Spl 2.17.0001
Gsm 02.07.10
Os 2.17.7.2
I would like to upgrade it to WM6 and maybe add some of the new features of the HTC touch. I love the wizard and refuse to give up the keyboard but would like to have some of the functionality of the touch. I can hack a pc just fine but have never messed around on a mobile before. I do not want to brick this thing. I have PHM registry editor installed on my wizard. I was hoping someone had a clear cut answer on how to upgrade my device to WM6 and install some cool apps along the way. I love reading the many posts on this great site, I have learned alot. If anyone can help out this newbie I would be forever grateful.

more questions
Thanks for the reply, I have determined that I have G4 unlocked model. Now the next question that I have is do I need to upgrade my existing rom before installing a WM6 rom. If not do you have any suggestions on which WM6 rom to install?
Did you mean CID Unlocked G4? If you are not sure then look for shell tool and follow some others in G4 forum.
I checked and it is CID unlocked, so my next question is which WM6 rom should I use? Does anyone know if the new "touch" applications will work on a g4 model? I have searched through the G4 postings and I have not found anything on this.
My idea

I think NBD 7.4 is the best WM6 "touched" rom...
But I don't know if it's working on G4 wiz....

G3 and G4 have nothing different apart from the boot chip. So it should work (I may be wrong but you can safely give a try).

The members of this forum are advanced users, and they are expecting this from other members too. Thus if you don't want to lose your face in front of the other members, I suggest you try to solve your problems yourself first, and then search on this forum and even on the whole internet, and if then you still couldn't solve your problem, the link 'Post reply' or the link 'New thread' on this forum are there for you...So you will be sure that the problem you couldn't solve, isn't just something explained before and other members of this forum won't laugh at you...
The members with very high post count will not always be able to help you out in the best way...It is very easy to post hundreds of replies every day, but it's much harder to post so many useful replies! Sometimes you will see a thread becoming very long, thanks to some users willing to thank someone over hundreds of time. Of course, it is very polite to thank someone that helped you out, but you will see that all those thank you and other useless post are making it very hard for you and other members to find the posts that really will help you out of your little problem...So, an other suggestion for you is that you only post what really matters, that way, you will very soon be so popular in this forum and on any other forum that you might get famous by a lot of people and a lot of people might even remember you every time they are using their Pocket PC...wouldn't that be great??!
So, now you got a little introduction to this forum I'm sure you will find out your way and make it to the 'Search' button just on top of every page on this forum. Then, a new world will open for you, you will be able to find tons of information, more than ten or twenty thread are just on the subject what you where asking for and you will see that while you are searching, you will very soon get a little frustrated to find more than ten times exactly the same instructions to solve your problem. I am sure, very soon we will see some replies from you asking other members to just use that little search link before posting a question that was solved ten times before on this forum...
Have a nice day, we hope you will be able to help us out too if we got some problem that you might be able to solve!!

wow a little harsh huh? why the sour response?
Well, Doug is probably coming from some other forum where a new "Which is the best ROM?" kind of post is started each week. It is a natural question, but it gets old after a while.
In the Hermes thread for example, there are multiple kitchens for making ROMs, so everyone and his brother are putting out new ROMs constantly that suit their needs. Asking which is the best is kind of like asking which restaurant is best in San Francisco. There are good ones and bad ones, cheap ones and expensive ones, it is all a matter of taste.
At this point though, with three or so cooked ROMs out for the Kaiser, I think it might be a valid question. Most knowledgable people will have tried all three and come to some sort of conclusion.
Yeah really ! why would this piss anybody off ?

Really, a good way to find out what's best (for you) is to try them out. I know, everyone says that. But they say it for a reason.
A great place to find out before flashing is to hop into the individual threads for the specific ROMS and read what's included in each and what comments (good and bad) have been posted. There's only a few ROMs out at the moment, so that won't be hard at all.
Usually when anyone starts a thread like this they just want someone to throw out an easy "The best ROM is...". I am personally using the HTC stock at the moment. I like it for now, others don't. So, you'll have to decide for yourself.
Have fun finding out!

My issue with the question is that if there truly was a "best ROM so far" available, it would be posted as such and probably stickied. The point is that there is no BEST, even with only 3 of them out there. Each is different.
I've tried all three ROMs and seem to be about the same. Only differences are the apps included, and storage space. Check them out and see for yourself.
Kaiser Roms, which is best?
I spent the last two days testing out all the variants of the ROMS out there, and there are pretty much only 4 English versions available.
Here you go, a nice summary of the results in one quick read, but i've not included the links to the files, some work for you
1. the stock HTC one - RUU_Kaiser_HTC_WWE_1.56.405.5_radio_sign_22.45.88.07_1.27.12.11_Ship.exe (uses WM6 CE OS 5.2.1620)
and then 3 or so (because he has sub versions to remove unnecessary programs) variants of the same ROM by Helmi:
2. helmi_Kaiser_1.57.000.1_AKU.0.7.0.Cooked.exe - a cooked version based on HTC WWE version but has newer WM6 CE base code (WM6 CE OS 5.2.1908)
3. Helmi_Kaiser_1.57.00.02_AKU.0.7.0.Cooked.exe - another cooked version of HTC_WWE version but has selectable "activator" directory of cabs that the user can install as desired. Also uses same WM6 CE OS 5.2.1908 as above.
4. Helmi_Kaiser_1.57.00.03_AKU.0.7.0.Cooked.exe - yet another flavour, but this one has virtually all extra programs removed in a good attempt at freeing up as much memory as possible, it also uses a newer version of WM6 CE OS 5.2.1921.
see Helmi's link for all the info. My hats off to you Helmi.
In the end, I decided to go with the standard version as released by HTC, as I didn't notice much of a difference myself. I have naturally upgraded various cabs and installed my ideal base set of apps to get the machine setup as I prefer. My decision to go this way was based on what I prefer and you should really try the ROMS yourself to make the correct decision, I didn't try every program with each version so perhaps i missed things.
I upgraded the Radio to version 1.27.12.17. -(this doesn't appear to make any difference to my terrible radio reception or the random dropping off of the radio link to GSM, neither does selecting the gsm option under band instead of auto). Thank god that I don't use 3G as there seems to be a real problem with the UMTS radio code. I just hope that I don't have a hardware fault, but I doubt it as numerous other people and links reflect similar issues to mine. We can only hope that HTC will release new RADIO code soon.
So, I wish you well in your endeavor to find "the perfect ROM".....
While I wouldn't have posted "best rom" question (as I agree, that is so subjective), that is a great help SAppie! Thanks!
Agree and Disagree
Not wanting to piss everyone off
I think the OP was requesting ROM test result and comparison, like SAppie comment, as I also agree there's no such thing as 'best ROM'.
Now, there're release with WM6.5 and others. Anyone can update this with newer ROM's comparison?
As a newbie in WM myself, some of the thread has 1000 pages .. to read all will be tough, but sometimes that's the only way. The FAQ and sticky is helpful as starting point for me ..
well i tried athineos os, hyperdragon III, life in 3d and now i will try 6.5 beta but so far the fastest is the athineos and it greaat
This is an old topic with no real constructive merit, so I'm closing it.
Perhaps this thread is what you're after: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=399510

WM 6.1 for TyTn II

Sorry for asking but everyone is a newbeeeee sometime, right
I just found this site and I really want to upgrade my HTC TyTn II with WM 6.1.
I understand that on this site aloooooot of people are writing there own application and changing the org. RAM etc etc.
I wounder WHAT RAM I should install, the official Microsoft 6.1 or...
Where to looooooook ?
Pleazzzz have faith and once more, I'm a beginner
since you are new....1st thing to do before asking a question is use the forum search function and/or go to the wiki page for your device most of your questions if not all can be answered by doing those two things...
I'm going to give you the best piece of advice I can. Don't forget the name GSLEON3. I have a feeling you might need him in the near future.
i would take the last one that came out... and everytime a new one is available -> flash it.
other possibility: start with the wiki.
Well, you won't be changing ANY RAM for years bud. No offense, but that would take a lot of address work to alter the ram alotment.
You're best friend is the wiki, & the second post on the page called Start Here.
Now I don't expect to see another question for at least 5 days to a week, becuase if you are that new, you've got a bit of reading to do.
Start with the basics & learn about roms, radios, & basic tools that make flashing & cooking possible.
DO NOT PLAY WITH THINGS YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND. If you're not comfortable with a process or don't understand it, DON'T DO IT! Just like anything else, you're actions will have consequences, some are good some can be devastating. So start here: http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Kaiser
Then go to this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=369282
After reading all of the info there, then you can start asking questions for clarification without being royally flamed.

OK here we goooiiiiinnnng to reeeeead and reeeeeeaaad an.......
Godnight & over and out
I learned everything I needed to know from here. Everything is extensive. With a little dedication and a little geekism, you'll figure it out
My RAM doesn't fit!!!!
I'm so sorry that I didn't get to chime in earlier but I was changing the RAM on my Tilt and totally screwed up trying to fit my Laptop RAM into my phone. I couldn't find the Wiki on how to fix it. Can I tether it using Active Sync?

I am a noob with xda, I have spent hours reading, and trying to learn. I am still not clear how to safely update my orbit 1 to wm6.1 with touchflo.
For the non experienced (with xda) this forum is very difficult to find information.
Virtually every post / tutorial uses technical terms which presume previoius knowledge of htc / xda firmware and upgrades.
I am not IT incompetent.
There are a number of iPhone forums which have very straightforward forums which guide the reasonably competent computer user to unlock iphone, upgrade firmware and software.
Is there a straightforward tutorial available in xda-developers to help me upgrade to wm6.1 with touchflo?
Thanks colink

Firts, I would like to ensure you that I am not flaming or anything like that.
But, I have to Agree with Colink, this is not a noobfriendly forum
I´ve just bought a S200 from a friend (I´ve been dreaming with it since 2006!) and was a very pleasent surprise to know that Prophet could run WM 6.1 (I like Touchflo 3d, but for me, is not necessary.)
So, just as Colink (I supose), I´ve spent the last week reading this forum...and XDA forum too. I´m very sure that everything i should (or even can) know about prophet, is here. There is no other place to search...
But, the volume of knowledge is so huge, that sometimes is even confuse to absorb it.
So, I agree with colink and ask, Is there any tutorial to upgrade my WM version?
I´m pretty sure that I´ll upgrade it with or without tutorial... but as since as theres so many "expert" around here and, they did so much to the whole forum... wouldn´t be hard to someone write a quick tutorial.
But, I hope you all understand, that what I´m doing here, and I supose colink too, is just searching at the best (probably) only place to find anything about our ppc... not been lazy, we are just afraid of screwing something.
Thanks!
Magliano

Colink, in response to your comments above you would have read the very good guides to upgrading such as these:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=405384 and http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=401326 and http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=353547.
When i did my first flash i started with this : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=315016. I then Hardspl using the guides above. The info i read recomended this way, so i used it. You will also have read from the guides about using XP not Vista to flash and also ensuring you remove all devices from USB ports and turning off other comunication s/w. The guides also offer good info on what to do when it goes wrong. If you do flash 6.1 rom and it goes wrong, then you can revert back to 315016 thread (aku 2.2 rom) as the guides say, this wil get you device working again
This post gives you links to the guides and a list of Roms, although you should check for new ones also : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=377545
The wiki is also useful : http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Prophet_Contributed_ROMs
Now i hope this is both useful to yourself and d.magliano. I know that too much info is always a head wrecker, but really the guides are very good.
Hi Timmymarsh
Thanks for the response and the guidance. I am currently reading through the links you gave.
Unfortunately in my haste, before reading your post I followed instructions for installing USPL.
I have just run start_uspl.exe on my orbit 1, after following instructions re- soft reset.
Phone is showing white screen asdescribed in tutorial
PDA ROM update utility has opened on xp laptop.
Instructed to conect via active sync.
Active sync cannot find device.
I have not touched phone and do not want to brick it.
Any guidance would be appreciated.
The phone is currently connected to the charger with white screen. I presume I will have to restart and hope for the best.
Secondly the first link you give in your reply is for 'Prophet' - do I need different instructions / aplications for Artemis / Orbit?
Thanks Colin
i'll try to help yoy

Colink, i thought it was touch cruise hardware and ****, thats not good!! You are correct in thinking that you cannot use the prophet section in flashing. If i were you, id goto the polaris section and read how to recover. HardSPL and flashing is more complex for the Polaris, i am waiting for official wm6.1 rom before i try any cooked ones on there. If you are lucky you can recover your device by removing the battery for at least 30 seconds and try and restart, but i do fear you may have bricked your device as the SPL is one of two parts that help load you OS (apols if my descriptions are basic, i dont want to confuse)
Read the Polaris section and look for help, if not ask, but you may get rude reply. Sorry i cant help more, as i have not tried on my touch cruise yet. Let me know what happens, pm me if you want
hi timmymarsh
Thanks for your guidance. The Polaris is the orbit 2. My orbit1 is the Artemis. Not sure if it has same complexeties as Polaris.
I will follow your guidance and let you know.

Htc touch pro (RAPHAEL) synchronization

Hi guys, I wana ask you about synchronization htc touch pro (raphael) on winodws vista. How can i synchronizate it vit the usb? i search at this forum a lot of post, but i didn't find enywhere. So please help me guys i want to change my rom to 6.5 . That's why i need this lession.
You mention you want to sync and then at the end of your sentence, it seems more likely that you are also looking to upgrade/flash. The question now is, do you want to save anything that is currently on your phone or would you rather upgrade to a 6.5 winmo ROM and start over?

No i dont wana to save all my files . I wana have a real windows mobile 6.5 on my htc touch pro (raphael)
So then you want to flash or upgrade your device. Do you care if you flash a stock or a custom ROM? Before you consider, read THIS. Keep in mind, that site isn't a "bad read", just might seem like the person might be a tad upset at at&t
I would suggest a few threads for reading before you even consider flashing.
THIS thread has a collection of other threads that are helpful/useful. I would consider starting HERE for flashing a GSM device and HERE for CDMA. If you find it is too much to read, I can try to walk you through the steps but no idea as to when I will have the time to actually do that. The wiki that everyone is referring to may have been changed in some cases. THIS is the working link to date. Additionally, if you choose to flash a custom ROM you will need to HARD-SPL your device BEFORE YOU FLASH! Supposedly you can flash stock ROMs all day long and worry less. To me, the major difference between a stock and a custom ROM is over-all behavior. Stock ROMs are more straight forward and custom ROMs can be difficult to manage if you don't know what you are doing. It's quite a shock to most new to the custom ROM deal but if you think you are ready for it, I would suggest using the ROM in my sig/signature. Again, to me, this ROM represents the latest winmo enhancements to-date, even though winmo is becoming an obsolete OS, slowly but surely
One additional peice of advice to you my friend. If you find yourself confused by all of this, you can return to this thread and I'll try my best to explain things to you. All we ask is if your question pertains to something that the thread answers, please try to stay with-in that thread. To me, searching is an art, if you type in jibberish, it is likely that your results will turn up nothing useful but in order to get better at it, you have to try it out for yourself! With that, I hope you enjoy your device and the awesome members of XDA!
n-Joie! (Enjoy)
