What to do with the RC30 update window? - G1 Android Development

I've been watching this forum for a while now and i see the importance of modding the G1, but i'm not quite ready to do it myself. Unfortunatly, now I have gotten the update window on the G1 asking me to RC30.
I think theres at least a few of us in this same situation.
Is there any way I can update to RC30 and still keep the option to go back to RC29 if i want to access root later? Is there a recovery image i can make or an image currently on the G1 i can copy?

Anyone ripped the UK RC8 build update off there phone??

ATTENTION UK G1 USERS
So the updates out there but no one has posted it yet, come on lets get it together and start opening up our update to give root access.
If you have installed the update OTA then you may have locked yourself out. What us UK users are relying on is the full non OTA version to be released that then can be altered before installing.

re:lockin myself out
hi just wanted to explain why im asking the question. im running UK G1 with rc30 update installed with root access. im hoping that the uk follow the US and change the new update to give root. im thinking i should be able to move over to that update if and when.
is that the case??
I will be making a modified UK RC8 update this evening, assuming I can get my hands on the full update. If anyone gets the notification for RC8, PLEASE, look in the cache directory on your phone, and post the name of the zip file that is there.
Or better yet, grab it off your phone and upload it somewhere
re: making rc8 with root.
JesusFreke do you think it should be easy to revert back to UK update after its cracked??and good luck finding the update ive been lookin all day.
HOPE U DO!!!
also with rc30 we cant use sd card as mass storage device. is that true as i used sd card to update phone.
thanx

OTA update RC30 killed my market downloads

the OTA update ended in an ERROR the screen with the triangle and ! ........ now I can not download anything from the market!!!
anyone else have this issue?
I'm assuming you don't care if you don't have root access, correct?
If that's the case, download this file and copy it to your sd card and name it update.zip, then boot into recovery mode (home+power), and press alt-L, then alt+s to apply the update.
It will re-flash your phone to RC30, and is much less likely to error out.

Can someone shed some light as to why I would need root access? So far everyone is crying over having it, not having it, wanting it and blah blah blah.
I've been reading around forums and stuff since the g1 came out and still have yet to find a valid reason for needing root access.
Tethering is done w/out root access.
Any help in making me jealous I don't have root access?
I have the fully upgraded rc30.

*That* is (one reason) why you need root access

its says something about can't access e:/cache/recovery.log or something of that nature... any ideas, I'm about to call Tmobile and ask for a new phone!!!
Don't you think that R30 will be applied to all of their future updates? or check to see if RC30, factory version, is applied before applying anymore?
Also i'm sure the answer is no, if i have updated to 30 is there a "flash" that can be done to bring the phone back to default stage before the RC29 and RC30 updates?
Is root really needed by a basic Joe that has no concept of making programs for Android?
My curious mind wants too know

All future updates (RC30+) should have all the changes from RC30 incorporated.

For stock OTA firmware, no. Stock firmware G1 can only flash to same or higher version OTA. For G1 with modified firmware, they can be flashed back to RC28 and RC29. It is possible that another security hole will be discovered in the future which lets users temporarily gain root access and install a modified firmware though.

Root is for the most part only useful for users who are already pretty comfortable with linux and the cli. The iptables tethering and Debian hacks are excellent examples of root's power, but improperly using root can also potentially lead to phone brickage or security compromise, especially with users new to Linux shells.

A little confused

i was trying to root my phone like yesterday..but i just stopped in the middle of the process...but i download droidsans from the market..if i can auto-rotate that means i have root..also i can autorate the home screen but now the browser
on rc-29, downgraded
i think it's pretty safe to say you have root.
just to be sure, download Terminal Emulator from the android market and once it's loaded type in: su
if the little $ sign changes to a # then you have root
thanks
i have root..oh 1 thing if i ever wanted to not have root anymore what would i do
want out
i have root acess...i dont want it anymore for reasons with family..can anyone show me how to do this, on downgraded rc-29..
i'm not too sure, never done this, but i suppose if you reflash the original firmware it should get rid of root. don't quote me on this though.
oh ok..ill just wait if i get a better answer..no offense
Follow the steps on downgrading to rc29 in the getting root access thread.
Once you've done that, you will get an ota update from tmobile, or you can go and download the original rc30 and install it the update.zip.
End of story.
Hmm. Sounds fishy, what could root access be doing to your family?
fishy? my thoughts exactly
As stated, downgrade to stock RC29 and wait for the TMobile OTA update.
And as for what it has to do with his family, its very possible he has kids that likes to mess with his phone and he doesnt want them to to mess something up. If that is the case I would recommend restricting the root access with the whitelist, but if you dont really need the root then by all means, downgrade it
my parents dont want me to void my warranty or break my phone
ok thats just stupid! As a dad I will fully disclose that sometimes we can be stupid!
As a parent I would say do as your told. As a G1 enthusiast I would say leave it and dont tell your parents that you still have root (its easy to hide...). Also if you ever have to return the phone it is easy to restore it to its previous state
We had this issue pop up already. The handset was repaired under warranty
Unless you're getting it repaired, don't unroot it and just tell them you unrooted it. What's the harm? It doesn't sound like they know any better.
i copied the rc-29 file and did everything and then it says no image file
did you rename it to update.zip?
no..ill try that
what do i do after i rename it...i did that but it still says no image file
are you downgrading with DREAMIMG.nbh if so dont rename it and put it on the root of you sd card and turn off phone and restart it holding down the camera and power key then follow the on screen instructions.
Sorry forgot what you were doing for a min then.
i think im an idiot..im already on rc-29 with root...so i just wait for the ota update to come to my phone and i accept then i will no longer have root and i will be back to normal

[Q] If I root, will I still be able to get OTA updates from Google?

Excuse my complete noobishness, but I have to know.
If I root, but keep the stock ROM (basically, I just want root to get MarketEnabler at this stage) will I still be able to get OTA updates from Google?
The way I understand it, the answer is yes, but I'd like some confirmation from someone who definitely knows more than me.
no.....no.....no.....
Why ? There is any limitation for unlocked devices ? I think problems with ota only for custom rom.
I think so long as your on stock rom you get updates despite su and root. However if it is a major update you will lose root.
Once you root, you won't WANT the OTA update because you will get it from the forums long before it hits your device from Google.
This is a common question asked but its really irrelevant. Just root, the instant the update is released everyone gets it long before Google pushes it to you. Sure you could load a stock ROM and sit there waiting for a week till it pushes meanwhile everyone else just manually grabs it

[Q] Root, custom recovery, and flashing roms

Ok, so I've been in the root/flashing scene for a while.
I'm very experience with locked bootloaders like my Verizon Note3, but I'm not so sure about my Shield tablet.
I know root is easily attainable, and flashing should be about the same as the others.
My question is, in the event things go badly, is there a way to get back on the stock/non-rooted image?
What about updating the software via OTA to keep being able to gamestream? Does it break root and just force me to root again
or does it not allow me to update? If my Shield dies for whatever reason and I have to RMA, can I return it to 100% stock?
I looked over the forums and couldn't find any full answers, so hopefully you guys can help me.
Thanks in advance.

NVidia posts complete factory images on their website for restoration.
Also, all of their OTAs are full system images instead of patches/deltas. So you can safely update via OTA, root and other modifications won't break the OTA (but the OTA will get rid of any modifications including root.)
