Forced OTA upgrades *MAY* fail on factory 1GB SD - G1 Android Development

Lots of users in 3-5 different threads are running into problems where they get an error about unable to mount the SD card, causing the upgrade to fail. After lots of reading and searching I have found 5 users who get the same problem. All 5 are using the 1GB card that was included with their G1. 3 of them have tried different versions of fat16/fat32 and still failed. Those 3 have tried a different card and the upgrade worked.
Since there are a lot of threads about this upgrade and most are getting long, I thought I would make a new one with this warning. If you are using the default 1GB card, the update will most likely fail. This should not stop you from getting the automatic updates though because those are not saved on the SD card.

i did forced update with the card that came in my phone just fine : .x

thats odd....i will pass the info on to others who are not able to upgrae. maybe some cards just dont work. who knows

Some can, some cannot. I want to find more out about these cards. Maybe there are a few different versions of the card. Anyone who has tried it on the factory card, please post with whether it worked or not, and ANY info you can read from the card (brand, serial anything). so we can try to narrow this down more.

Mine worked on the stock card.
Edit: I would like to add however that a lot of us running RC29 this way are having issues connecting to data via 3G. It seems EDGE and WiFi connections remain unaffected. Upgrade at your own risk as nothing has been confirmed. Reports are starting to trickle into AndroidCommunity about this.

can try factory reset from recovery windows, maybe was installed some file or program that have acces to sd card file and give problem with the update from sd. it is only a idea . could be a lot of thing , the first one is the user.

I did a forced upgrade but not with the card it came with. Once update was finished I did a hard reset and 3g data is working fine for me..

Keep an eye on it for us. I'm not entirely convinced it's an RC29 issue but I can't seem to narrow down what is actually going on.

I manually did the upgrade and I am using 3g only network and has worked fine all day... I will keep you post it if I encounter any problems...

my sd card
sanDisk 1gb 082280342OC2EJ worked fine and as far as i know 3g is working. it was earlier at least. i get no service in my downstairs condo :/ so i'll confirm tomorrow

Little more info was just found. Seems someone with that problem checked the card out in fdisk and found there was no partition table on it. Basically that means that the device would be "mmcblk0" but the bootloader is looking for "mmcblk0p1" (partition 1). I havent seen this before so I am guessing its either a bug in the method used to format the card, or maybe the partition tables are getting damaged. Based on this and the fact that some users are getting it to work I still believe the cards are different, or were formatted differently (maybe different batches). Not enough data yet to find a pattern though.
Also he thinks the card that came with his G1 is a transcend, but he will check on it.

hmm
Now I'm worried about my 3g. Should I be connected to 3g any time I can access edge? Any one have word on whether force updating causes 3g problems?

I am connected to 3G all the time... but if I have too weak of a single it switchs to edge. you should always see the 3G icon.

weak
Must be the weak signal inside! I hope heh, ill let you know tomorrow

so
just went out and there was no 3g or edge connection for a long time. i had service just 3g and edge weren't showing up, but when it did connect it was 3g and would switch between edge and 3g.

Well that seems logical/although not cool since I was in buckead which is a major area in downtown atl

Still no new info about which cards specifically fail. Anyone who had their factory card fail able to tell us the brand/serial# or anything else?

"No Sim Card" error... Do I need a replacement?

So I've been experiencing intermintent connectivity, "no sim card error" and extremely slow speeds. This is my second gs3 ("Updated" sticker), and I have not rooted or flashed the device.
What options do I have? Should I get replaced again?

I get the same error. I called Verizon to report the problem and they replaced my SIM only for the error to reappear hours later. I would try replacing your SIM, wiping your device, and calling Verizon to report the problem. I've google'd this issue and it seems like a fairly decent amount of people are experiencing this problem. It may have something to do with the area in which you're experiencing this problem, but that is only a guess.

I got this once. I restarted the phone and it went away and hasn't come back yet. Worth a shot at least.
I've had this same problem. Replaced both phone and sim card and nothing helps. I believe whatever is causing this is the same thing causing the notification asking to unlock the sim card on some aosp roms. It seems to only happen in certain locations which leads me to believe that it has something to do with the phone communicating with certain towers or trying to connect in certain specific situations. Unfortunately both verizon and samsung are ignoring the issue and I don't believe it is quite common enough for any developers here to try to fix it. So, I would suggest switching phones if it's not something you think you can live with.
this happened to me last night, I went to a concert in a rural area, the phone was working great until I got to the parking lot, then I had no sms/voice, 4G worked great though.
I am assuming we will never receive a fix for this?
I also had "no sim" errors a few times while using CM10, but nothing like last night, my phone was useless the entire time I was there.
Then as I drove away it magically started working again.

Curios: Intermittent “Not registered on network" - anything other than bad SIM?

I’m rooted using qkster’s Heimdal 2.3.6 for almost a year... very few problems.
Lately I have a problem that occurs intermittently upon reboot.
1 – It shows a grey SIM card icon near upper right (not the blue sd scanning that always happens)
2 – Cannot make or receive calls, get message “not registered on network”.
3 - Can't use SMS or data
The only way to fix it is to reboot. Some reboots are successful, some not.
If successful, works fine until next reboot.
If not successful, doesn't work at all until next reboot.
The behavior only changes during reboot.. I guess maybe that’s when SIM card info gets red into memory?
I tried removing/reinstalling SIM card. Pressing on it during boot (other phones apparenlty have looseness of SIM card)..no change.
When the problem was really bad (9 out of 10 reboots come up bad), I swapped SIM cards with my daughter. **The problem followed the SIM card*.... Two successful reboots on my phone with her SIM card, Two unsuccessful reboots on her phone with my SIM card. Swapped my SIM card back into my phone and again unsuccessful reboots 9 times out of 10.
I called AT&T, they said go to their store and they’ll give me a new SIM card for free (which I’m planning on Friday)
To me, “intermittent” SIM card is a satisfying answer. It doesn't seem that software problem would create intermittent behavior like this. I haven’t really tried flashing new modem or playing wiht IMEI recovery stuff. ... I’m not tremendously familiar with those and don’t want to mess anything up when I have a success path to just swap SIM cards.
At this point I'm just curious and hoping to go into AT&T armed with more info.
Do you think is't a bad SIM card? Or is it instead maybe something simpler that could have been fixed without swappig SIM card?
And did my rooting the phone or other activities contribute to it?

Thanks qkster.
I'm thinking it must be the SIM because the problem followed the SIM to another phone and back.
I'm just not sure exactly what exactly is stored on the SIM and whether it could have been corrupted by my phone's actitivies and whether it's fixiable without SIM resplacement.
Again, just curiosity.

Np..sry I didn't notice that you had use the same sim and got the same problems on a different phone.

UPDATE - I went to AT&T today – new SIM card, phone works fine on three-in-a-row reboots. That seems to confirm bad SIM was the problem, although I don’t know why... seems like an uncomon problem for Infuse.
I asked the rep what might be the cause, he said it just happens every once in awhile.
It took me awhile to figure out.
Googling the error “not registered on network” gave nothing on Infuse forums (apparently it’s not a common failure... I’m just lucky).
Google search on that error led to lots of other devices including lots of HTC phones that had problems with the holder that could be corrected by inserting paper or tape as a wedge to put pressure on the SIM card. I actually seemed to have success with that once (because the problem was intermittent), so that kept me on that wrong track longer than I should have been.
Anyway, it’s here now for posterity for whatever future Infuser searches “not registered on network” and pretty straightforward in retrosepct. The key test to confirm of course is swapping SIM to another phone.

Verizon Galaxy S3: worked fine for a week on 4.3, then 'no network'

I installed custom 4.3 ROM from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2591895&highlight=no+data and all was working really great for a week. Then today for some reason I got no network - can't call, no mobile data.
On local wifi everything works well. Reboots, power downs did not help.
Has anyone experienced anything like this? Any tips are greatly appreciated!

When I saw your original post I thought I'd finally been able to figure out why my GS3 says "no network" at times. It took me a whole hour to get it to connect to my network this morning! 3G not working on Nexus 5

I've been using my 3G mobile connection for quite a while now.
Well, WAS using, someday, it suddenly stopped working. I thought it was because I exceeded my 250mb limit but, unfortunately, it wasn't that.
It usually showed up 'H' and had a fairly nice download speed, but now it only shows E and has a tremendously bad download speed.
So, after figuring out it wasn't my plan having its limit exceeded, I decided to try somethings to fix it. At the time I was using the most recent CM11 nightly.
I did a wipe and installed the latest snapshot. Didn't work.
I tried configuring the APN, exactly like my parent's Moto G, and had no luck.
And then now, as a last resort, did a COMPLETE wipe(including internal storage), and flashed the latest Android L ROM available.
Nothing worked, at all, actually.
I've also tried inserting my SIM card to my mother's Lumia 720. It worked as it should. Showed up 'H'. Her functioning SIM card also didn't work on my cellphone.
I'm getting desperate.
I live in Brazil, and my mobile operator is "Oi"
call your operator. you are getting edge, "E". thats very slow data speeds! also, look in tbe main settings, mobile networks. what is it set for.. lte, 3G, or 2G?

try this.. dial *#*#4636#*#*, then press phone info, then change the lte/gsm to wcdma preferred. this will prefer 3G(not lte). btw, have you tried calling your operator? it can just be how they have you set up in their system now.

Also, I've tried configuring that, still shows E. If I choose "Only WCDMA", my network goes unavailable.

UPDATE:
I've figured out the problem. It's the signal. When the H signal isn't strong enough, it goes to E. I was on another place on my city today and there H was working, and exactly when I got back, the signal started being EDGE.
Now, I've tried flashing another radio. I just downloaded the ZIP and flashed. Note that I am on Android L. It still has the same problem. Now I ask, how may I fix this?

Weird network problem - signal drops

Hi everyone,
has any of you ever had network problems, as can be seen in the video?
For a few days now both network connections have been breaking down when I try to make a call. But that doesn't always happen. Sometimes I can make 10 calls in a row and everything is fine, and sometimes nothing works. It doesn't matter which SIM I use to make the call. The problem occurs with both cards. If that happens, then either directly when dialing a number, or immediately after hanging up.
I've never seen anything like this. And I wonder if it's the software, the SIM tray, one of the cards or the network operator itself.
Can anybody please help me? This is quite annoying.
PS: Sorry for the German settings. „Keine SIM-Karte“ = No SIM card // „Dienst nicht verfügbar“ = no service

I did these 4 steps, but the first time I tried to call, both connections dropped again. Can there be a hardware problem at all? Looks more like a software issue, doesn't it?

The sim card, the usual hardware suspect...
They can be damaged by ESD; handled like a stick of ram.
ESD may not manifest itself for weeks, months even years. Insults are cumulative.
It's not expensive but it is a pain, try to not damage it as it left the plant A-OK.
Just like ram sticks poor handling is the cause of almost all sim card failures.

So, am I getting you right? I just go to the store and have the SIM card replaced and everything should work again?
I've tried a few things now. If I set SIM 2 to GSM, everything is fine. The connection doesn't break. I believe it is the 3G connection. And that's why these crashes could occur when I make calls. SIM 2 doesn't support VoLTE, so it switches to 3G.
EDIT: I've tried different things now. I swapped SIM 1 and 2 back and forth. I also used my two SIM cards alternately with a third SIM card. The problem persists. Could a hard reset help or should I send the device for repairs straight away?
Same problem here. Setting sim 1 to GSM only, and sim2 to LTE fixed my problem for a while. This has something to do with dual sim handling.

No, I don't see any point in doing that. I swapped the SIM cards and even tried other cards and the problem was still there. If something had to be cleaned, it would be the SIM tray. But as already written, there are no disconnections when a SIM is operated in 2G. I think that rather means that it is a software problem.

I have this same problem with phone dropping off the network. For me it started after the first Android 11 update. I have full signal levels at home but if I try to make a call signal level for both sim cards drops and I get a message that mobile network is not available. Doesn't happen always but pretty often.
I'm pretty sure it has something to do with how the phone handles dual-sim operations...

Edit - and the problem is even worse. Almost after every incoming call I lose signal to both sims...
Edit II - I wanted to try to switch sim 2 to gsm only network, and noticed that there's 5G available for it too, after the update. Before that there wasn't such an option....

Since I use the second SIM only for business calls, I have already set it to GSM only. Today I noticed that I still have outages. So apparently to force 2G is no longer of any use. :/
About 5G: It has been active on my device since I got it. Perhaps there was an update on this from your carrier.
