Curios: Intermittent “Not registered on network" - anything other than bad SIM? - Samsung Infuse 4G

I’m rooted using qkster’s Heimdal 2.3.6 for almost a year... very few problems.
Lately I have a problem that occurs intermittently upon reboot.
1 – It shows a grey SIM card icon near upper right (not the blue sd scanning that always happens)
2 – Cannot make or receive calls, get message “not registered on network”.
3 - Can't use SMS or data
The only way to fix it is to reboot. Some reboots are successful, some not.
If successful, works fine until next reboot.
If not successful, doesn't work at all until next reboot.
The behavior only changes during reboot.. I guess maybe that’s when SIM card info gets red into memory?
I tried removing/reinstalling SIM card. Pressing on it during boot (other phones apparenlty have looseness of SIM card)..no change.
When the problem was really bad (9 out of 10 reboots come up bad), I swapped SIM cards with my daughter. **The problem followed the SIM card*.... Two successful reboots on my phone with her SIM card, Two unsuccessful reboots on her phone with my SIM card. Swapped my SIM card back into my phone and again unsuccessful reboots 9 times out of 10.
I called AT&T, they said go to their store and they’ll give me a new SIM card for free (which I’m planning on Friday)
To me, “intermittent” SIM card is a satisfying answer. It doesn't seem that software problem would create intermittent behavior like this. I haven’t really tried flashing new modem or playing wiht IMEI recovery stuff. ... I’m not tremendously familiar with those and don’t want to mess anything up when I have a success path to just swap SIM cards.
At this point I'm just curious and hoping to go into AT&T armed with more info.
Do you think is't a bad SIM card? Or is it instead maybe something simpler that could have been fixed without swappig SIM card?
And did my rooting the phone or other activities contribute to it?

Thanks qkster.
I'm thinking it must be the SIM because the problem followed the SIM to another phone and back.
I'm just not sure exactly what exactly is stored on the SIM and whether it could have been corrupted by my phone's actitivies and whether it's fixiable without SIM resplacement.
Again, just curiosity.

resolved
UPDATE - I went to AT&T today – new SIM card, phone works fine on three-in-a-row reboots. That seems to confirm bad SIM was the problem, although I don’t know why... seems like an uncomon problem for Infuse.
I asked the rep what might be the cause, he said it just happens every once in awhile.
It took me awhile to figure out.
Googling the error “not registered on network” gave nothing on Infuse forums (apparently it’s not a common failure... I’m just lucky).
Google search on that error led to lots of other devices including lots of HTC phones that had problems with the holder that could be corrected by inserting paper or tape as a wedge to put pressure on the SIM card. I actually seemed to have success with that once (because the problem was intermittent), so that kept me on that wrong track longer than I should have been.
Anyway, it’s here now for posterity for whatever future Infuser searches “not registered on network” and pretty straightforward in retrosepct. The key test to confirm of course is swapping SIM to another phone.

[Q] My 3rd Captivate: New Problems - WiFi

Please delete this thread. It works now. I didn't do anything special. It just started working on its own (while I was with Samsung Level 2 Tech Support).
Well, not knowing sh** from shinola about things like sim cards and such (Currently on Verizon until my Captivate is delivered), it would seem logical that it is the new sim. That is the only variable that has changed. Same model phone, same networks on all three devices, same sim on first two devices that worked on all three wifi networks, different sim on third device that does not work on your business wifi. Do you not have the old sim card to try it out with?

Sorry to have to delete my original post since (for some reason) it started to work on me while I was waiting on the phone with Level 2 Tech Support. I thought about the SIM card being the only variable. While I don't have the old SIM card to try (besides, it's been deactivated) I removed the SIM card and turned the phone on. Still, no go. (My old phones with no SIM cards work with WiFi).
So anyway, it works now for some reason. I did a factory reset, didn't work from the get-go. Kept trying and trying and finally I have had it. Called Samsung, waited on the phone, and finally it started to work!
That's good to hear.

unlocked phone erased sim card?

I wanted to test the unlock i did on my phone yesterday, so i put my brothers tmobile sim card in my phone, but all it did was show a sim card icon at the top of the status bar, and i didn't have signal. so i just figured the unlock didn't work.
Then when my brother put his sim card back in his phone, his wasn't working. apparently the sim was reformatted or something, and now he has to get a new sim. anyone heard of this before? also should i try another sim card, or will it just destroy that one too?

you forgot to select network operators in the wireless settings. in the wireless and network setting select mobile network then select network operators your phone will then scan available network operators and show you at&t or t-mobile after the scan. since you want t-mobile simply select it.

would that have made his sim card work again if my phone recognized the network? or was that just something weird that happened. I am new to the whole unlocking deal.
Thanks for the help, I am a little nervous to try it now, as i dont want to mess up his card again! :/
you should be fine. is your contact actually stored on your sim? ,maybe your brother's sim is empty but his contacts are stored in his phone. contacts stored in sim card are not easily get deleted than contacts stored in phone simply import you phone contacts to your sim to be safe.
my contacts are fine, but his phone actually would not work when he put his sim card back in his phone. it's just a regular dumbphone, but he didn't have signal or anything. Do you know what would cause that?
there must be an option somewhere in his phone to select the wireless network he has. what phone he is using? maybe a simple reboot on his phone with his sim card already in place would do.
yea maybe, i think he was going to go to tmobile this morning.. i guess i can't really call him to have him try though!
anyway i'll see if he will be brave enough to let me try again! thanks for the help!
I may understand sim cards wrong but from what I understand the sim does not announce to the carrier hey this is eric shins phone. It instead just broad casts a number the carrier sees the number and associates it with eric shins number. That's why you can buy a prepaid att phone call the company up, give them the sim number and they can connect that with your phone.
More then likely the sim was physically damaged

hmm.. that does make sense. I thought i had heard of other people just popping in other people's sim cards and it wasn't a problem, but i don't know.
Just kinda strange that it was working before , and after i tried it, his phone no longer worked. Maybe it was damaged when he took it out or put it in, but from my experience they are pretty sturdy pieces of plastic!
i'll have to see what he says when he gets it fixed.

hmnn... thats what I thought because the op post that somewhere in the process when putting back in the sim he see's it was reformatted. just like putting an sd card with my other phone that is not samsung it can't read/open files unless you format it that would surely delete the data in it. in his instance without a warning it automatically formatted the sim and deleted all the data in it which would make it useless. in his case the sim card before is associated with the network but somehow reformatted and the data in it was lost.
so he went to tmobile today and got a new sim card, and everything works again.
maybe it did get damaged in the process.. who knows now!

Verizon Galaxy S3: worked fine for a week on 4.3, then 'no network'

I installed custom 4.3 ROM from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2591895&highlight=no+data and all was working really great for a week. Then today for some reason I got no network - can't call, no mobile data.
On local wifi everything works well. Reboots, power downs did not help.
Has anyone experienced anything like this? Any tips are greatly appreciated!

I feel like a total idiot - I opened the back and noticed that my sim card got ejected. For some reason I ignored the 'Insert SIM card' message because I took out the MicroSD card the day before and somehow my brain thought the phone was complaining about SDCard. SIM must have been ejected accidentally when I took out battery...

When I saw your original post I thought I'd finally been able to figure out why my GS3 says "no network" at times. It took me a whole hour to get it to connect to my network this morning! I gave the phone a reboot and took out the sim card a few times. Before upgrading my software I never experienced this problem. Please let me know if this problem persists on your end.

SIM card not allowed after coming back from Japan

Hello guys,
Im coming at you for a question which I can't have any answer.
I bought a Note10 Plus in October to somebody on the web, the phone was brand new (on its original sealing and packaging) and working perfectly. I was first on Three network, the phone worked, then I switch on GoMo, working perfectly too. On the 10th of November I traveled to Japan with a local sim card (Docomo) and same, all working. But yesterday, I came back to Ireland where I live, and still as of today, the phone show me 'SIM 2 not allowed'.
The phone is unlocked, I've checked with the Samsung support and they confirmed it (but didn't bring me helpful troubleshooting steps). I've contacted my carrier too who said that there is no issue on my account, and they will send me a new sim card too.
I'm not expecting it to work though, as the SIM card is working on the iPhone X of my gf, and her sim card is not working on my phone too. So it's only on my Note 10+.
I've tried to remove the sim and reinsert it, restart it, reset network settings, check the date and time, nothing to do, all go to the same error.
After making research, I tried to check some IMEI Blacklist check websites, but I don't trust them as I don't know where these infos comes from, but one catch my attention because it told me that the phone was blacklisted : https://www.imeipro.info/
All the others says that the phone is clean. Again, that's why I don't really trust it, and my carrier didn't mention any block. I'm still curious why my phone appear as blacklisted so I send them an email to try to know more.
I receive signal too, but can't send/receive calls or text, and I don't have access to data neither.
So now I have my phone with no any SIM working, and I don;t know what to try to get my phone working again.
I think I've explained all I did today, I don't know what to do more, I don't have any idea of what's going on with the phone, that's why I need your light to see if you can help me to find a way.
Thank you guys, I hope to hear from you soon!
From the sounds of it, it sounds like it's been blacklisted, that's my guess. Do you get any message when you insert the sim? I had a similar thing happen to me, turned out the guy I bought the phone off on Ebay didn't pay he's bill and phone wouldn't text or make calls anymore. O2 was the company that barred the phone, and they couldn't help me even though I had proof I'd purchased the phone from the guy, only he could sort it out as it was he's account. Anyway thankfully PayPal came to my rescue, they just needed proof it was blacklisted, carphonewarehouse did a check and printed out the results for me thankfully as I knew the guy that worked there. I got a refund and promised myself I'd never buy a phone off Ebay from a personal seller, if its a business account then maybe. Awful experience though. I hope you get this sorted.
I'm guessing you've never rooted the phone or flashed it as that can sometimes delete the efs folder which causes the phone to have no imei.
Thanks for your answer !
No usually I root all my phones but this time I wanted to keep it as normal, because tthe phone looks like there's nothing more to improve to me (except a little bbit the camera when the light is low..)
I didn't knew that it could cause such things ! I should have done that
Honestly that was the first time I bought the phone to somebody, and more of that, the phone was sealed on the original plastic with the label ''eu sim card only''. So I was trusting it, even if I know, that doesn't mean it's safe behind that.
Since I've posted the message, I contacted few carriers, like mine GoMo, and they dont know anything about the blacklisting (I was surprised) then I contacted Three, they told me that the device does not belomg to the; so they can't check.
I tried Eir, and they refused to give me infos for data protections, which I think is stupid because the phone is not a personal information who could reveal an identity but anyway. I didn't though about Carephonewarehouse, I will visit them because it seems like this is the best idea.
The weird thing to me is still that it didnt worked suddenly... I was in the flight and this is when I came back that it didn't worked. Well, maybe that was a bad hazard.
Something I've discovered yesterday more of that is when I have this issue, turning off the 4G and only allowing 3G/2G will allow me to use the data. Still no phone or text, but the phone is detecting the H+ signal and I'm free to go on the web.
Yes for your question, the issue happened instantly when I insert the card on the SIM1 with the error SIM not allowed, the SIM 2 slot works perfectly, that's what I'm using for the moment but I can't use any SD card at the same time, so it bother me. :/
Thanks for sharing your experience, then I know a little bit fore of what to do. I wanted to go to the police but I don't want to spend 2 hours there. Maybe I'll think of it as a last resort...

I just came from Japan as well I had the same problem but with my Sony Xperia 1.
I bought it from the states and I took vacation to Japan and used their sim card.
When I came back here in Florida I switched back to my at&t sim card I couldn't make calls or texts only data works for some reason I tried everything I used sim card on other phones (sim card is fine)
I tried everything, nothing worked !
I factory reset the phone and it worked, fixed the problem (it's strange because I used Galaxy s8 also with that sim card and it's working fine)
My Sony Xperia 1 had similar problem to yours
I don't know if this will help you to be honest but I had kinda same problem.
Hope you solved you issue.

Thank you for that, I've tried this yesterday after a backup, I used the sim card with the phone completly as new (well, I've restored it from the settings, so I don't know if it was the good way) and it didn't worked.
I think I will try carephone warehouse as jadaress1 requested, it might give me lot of infos there. Im also starting thinking that the phone is carrier blocked, but I can't see any reason why the phone was new and already unlocked so I don't see any reasons...

Weird network problem - signal drops

Hi everyone,
has any of you ever had network problems, as can be seen in the video?
For a few days now both network connections have been breaking down when I try to make a call. But that doesn't always happen. Sometimes I can make 10 calls in a row and everything is fine, and sometimes nothing works. It doesn't matter which SIM I use to make the call. The problem occurs with both cards. If that happens, then either directly when dialing a number, or immediately after hanging up.
I've never seen anything like this. And I wonder if it's the software, the SIM tray, one of the cards or the network operator itself.
Can anybody please help me? This is quite annoying.
PS: Sorry for the German settings. „Keine SIM-Karte“ = No SIM card // „Dienst nicht verfügbar“ = no service

I did these 4 steps, but the first time I tried to call, both connections dropped again. Can there be a hardware problem at all? Looks more like a software issue, doesn't it?

The sim card, the usual hardware suspect...
They can be damaged by ESD; handled like a stick of ram.
ESD may not manifest itself for weeks, months even years. Insults are cumulative.
It's not expensive but it is a pain, try to not damage it as it left the plant A-OK.
Just like ram sticks poor handling is the cause of almost all sim card failures.

So, am I getting you right? I just go to the store and have the SIM card replaced and everything should work again?
I've tried a few things now. If I set SIM 2 to GSM, everything is fine. The connection doesn't break. I believe it is the 3G connection. And that's why these crashes could occur when I make calls. SIM 2 doesn't support VoLTE, so it switches to 3G.
EDIT: I've tried different things now. I swapped SIM 1 and 2 back and forth. I also used my two SIM cards alternately with a third SIM card. The problem persists. Could a hard reset help or should I send the device for repairs straight away?
Same problem here. Setting sim 1 to GSM only, and sim2 to LTE fixed my problem for a while. This has something to do with dual sim handling.

This is soooo anoying. Have you had this problem for a long time or did it only come recently? Could this have something to do with a recent update?
I bought the phone a month ago, and while I was setting it up it received 5 updates including android 11. So I have no experience prior to Android 11.

No, I don't see any point in doing that. I swapped the SIM cards and even tried other cards and the problem was still there. If something had to be cleaned, it would be the SIM tray. But as already written, there are no disconnections when a SIM is operated in 2G. I think that rather means that it is a software problem.

I have this same problem with phone dropping off the network. For me it started after the first Android 11 update. I have full signal levels at home but if I try to make a call signal level for both sim cards drops and I get a message that mobile network is not available. Doesn't happen always but pretty often.
I'm pretty sure it has something to do with how the phone handles dual-sim operations...

I am glad, I am not the only one, who is facing this problem. I already thought, I have to send my phone back. So, we have to wait for a fix.
Must be patient. There is also bluetooth problem(disconnecting from devices). It looks like they were too fast with android 11.

So, let's hope the new .222 update, which has just arrived, will fix this.

Yeah, I even had to restart after the update, in order for the second SIM to become active...
Edit - and the problem is even worse. Almost after every incoming call I lose signal to both sims...
Edit II - I wanted to try to switch sim 2 to gsm only network, and noticed that there's 5G available for it too, after the update. Before that there wasn't such an option....

Since I use the second SIM only for business calls, I have already set it to GSM only. Today I noticed that I still have outages. So apparently to force 2G is no longer of any use. :/
About 5G: It has been active on my device since I got it. Perhaps there was an update on this from your carrier.
