Skyfire T-mobile web $5.99 (T-zones) Work Around for WM6 - 6.1! - General Topics

Okay, I've been using Skyfire on my Shadow with the T-mobile $5.99 plan for a few day's now. Of coarse it doesn't load pages as quick as a WiFi or 3G connection, but it does in fact work pretty well. After an extensive amount of research & tweaking with my internet settings (for a while) , I was able to figured out how to make it work. Its pretty simple & my way is actually a little more complicated. The simple fact is that Skyfire can not operate though proxy & I want to keep my proxy settings in case I may still need them.
How to:
1. Download a little & very useful application called nodata from here. http://www.modaco.com/content/pocket-pc-software/246171/new-free-utility/
(you must register first in order to download any apps at Modaco)
2. Install nodata cab.
3. On the Shadow (these settings should be very similar on the Dash & any WM6 - 6.0 Smartphone & PDA) go to settings, connections, GPRS, New connection, name it what ever you want (I named mines T-mobile new APN), connects to The Internet, Under Access Point enter epc.tmobile.com & hit done.
4. On the Shadow, from the home screen hit start, click on the nodata application icon. Ones the application opens hit the toggle button to disable the data connections that are enabled on your phone except for the new T-mobile APN connection that you've just made. Hit exit & you'll be prompted to confirm the exit, so hit yes. In my case, I have a data connection through proxy for web browsing to the internet & a second proxy connection for downloading emails through my work connection. If you want to find out how I did both connections you can find it out here. http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=1275435
If you've followed the steps correctly than Skyfire will work. I'm not sure if the new APN is available in every state yet, so that may also be another factor why it may not work for you. (I'm in Chicago).
I have to give credit to where its due. I found the APN info here. http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=1434021

this is a great trick. i swa it at shadow site. i did it on my shadow and my dash. but when done in my tilt which is unlock and running on t-mobile it does not work i wonder what it is.the wap.voicestream.com works for opera google maps and pie. have no idea

T-Mobile is about to do away with T-Zones and replace it with something called Web2Go which from what I understand will be more expensive than $5.99/mo.

t-mobile jave with wap

I once had a rom that allowed java programs to access the internet through t-mobiles wap, unfortunately there were other instability issues so I removed it. I can't even find it anymore, does anybody know of any roms that work with t-mobiles wap, so I can run opera and get away from pie.
It seems I was able to find the solution. jbed seems to use the system proxy settings, which appears to be the key to it all. i will post the links to a review of all the different midlet managers

Setting Proxy for PIE?

Hi,
I have a Tilt that I've flashed to the HTC ROM and it's all great except I'm trying to use pocket IE to access the MediaNet Homepage and of course it's not working because this registry doesn't have the key to force IE to use wireless.cingular.com. Could someone tell me where this key is. I have Opera for my other browsing (with no proxy) but I'd like IE to have the proxy just like the original AT&T roms.
Thanks,
Never Mind I flashed to the AT&T and found the two cabs:
restoreHiddenProxy4CWS_1219.cab
removeHiddenProxy4CWS_1219.cab
I think they should do the trick (may require some massaging)

[Q] Samsung Jack i637 Help

Got an AT&T Jack and need all the help I can get with this phone.
Hardly any .cabs will run on it and the GPS is locked (tried all the unlock tricks for the BJII).
This really is a nice phone, its just sooooo hindered by AT&T its not funny.
Thanks
I just got it yesterday..loving the phone and all the features ..when you mean the gps is locked ) what exactly you mean..I've been using google maps ,live search, and att navigator and my phone is fresh out the box..
Really, ok theres hope. Trying to get Garmin XT to work. Don't want to pay for att nav, and no data plan. Any ideas there, also gps test cant find the gps device.
And How do I set ringtones? I can't figure this darn thing out.
Am working on the ringtones well how to set my own mp3 ( i tried cutting a mp3 down to 30sec and pasted into my documents and ringtones and it didnt work) i hate the stock ringtones..If am correct i had read somewhere that the gps has to be set to com4 .. I was reading in another forum that they are working to security unlock our phone ( so no more permission not allowed when installing cabs) Keep you posted
Thank you so much, btw what is the other forum, I love forums on phones
Got the ringtones: 30 seconds, under 300kb, MP3, My Ringtone folder works for me.
Jsanta which forum did you see the activities to app unlock the Jack? I tried every possible availible tool also but no luck
GPS is not locked. Both Google Maps and Live Search Mobile worked without any tweaks. Acquisition is nearly instantaneous.
Ringer MP3's are capped by the same filesizelimit registry key (300kb) that was installed on the Blackjack 2.
The problem is the registry on the i637 is locked, so a registry editor is no help. I have dug around in the registry and found the security settings, but I cannot make any changes due to the locked registry. I posted them on the ATT/Samsung forum linked here:
http://forums.wireless.att.com/cng/board/message?board.id=samsung&thread.id=70827&page=5
Anybody know how to unlock the i637's registry?
Thanks for that link bch, saw it back a few days ago and it had 2 posts and forgot it. Wow how its grown.
Also could you please explain how to use CHome to do the contacts like yours, god that would help me.
And when I run chome I get errors on alot of things is this normal?
CHome Configurator (CC) will generate registry error messages when you (a) launch it and (b) save changes. Regardless of the error messages, the program runs and the changes do save and work perfectly.
This is how I set up my sliding panel for speed dialing:
Open CHome Config. Then do the following:
Menu > Panel > New, click yes when asked if you want to create a new panel.
Name the panel "speed dial" or something that suits you. The newly created panel wil appear in the list of panels; highlight it then click "show" on left soft button. This makes it visible on the homescreen; conversely, any panel can be hidden from view on the homescreen by clicking "hide."
Click on the panel to edit it. An editing window will open, click Menu > Page > New. When asked, confirm you want to create a new page.
Click Menu > Template > Contact Dialer. Choose contact phone number from your contacts list. If it's not a mobile #, it will ask if you want to enable SMS (text mssg) for this contact. Click yes if you want to use a speed e-mail for this contact. Click yes when it asks if you want to use the contact photo for the contact.
If you are using e-mail instead of SMS, then you need to manually edit the last field on the page which identifies the messaging service. Replace "SMS" with the name of the e-mail account you want to use, e.g. "Hotmail". Importantly, and not intuitively, if you want to use Outlook E-mail, then you need to insert "ActiveSync". Do not get this field confused with the one for the right soft-button, which you might want to change to "Send E-Mail" or similar instead of "SMS."
For each contact, create a new page and format as described above. Then click Done. Then Menu > Exit. You will be prompted to save. Doing so will give you two registry error messages (at least on the i637, it will), but ignore them by hitting OK. The speed dial panel will now appear amongst the sliding panels on your homescreen.
CHome also gives you the ability to change the order that panels appear on your homescreen under Menu > Panels.
Good luck!
Oh, I forgot to add:
When editing the last field to change from SMS to e-mail, you need to insert the e-mail address in the place of the phone number. So, "555-555-555" would be changed to "[email protected]"
Again, you only do this if you want to use e-mail with this contact and not SMS (text mssg).
Thank you sooo much
my phone is locked also
i cant seem to run anything that does not have a certificate or digitally signed.
the phone has a two-tier security enabled. I used security confi manager to verify.
Also i cant get Garmen xt to recognize the GPS.
I tried Ceregeditor and can not change any registry settings.
Thank you for your time,
Felipe
ATT sucks

I feel the same way , no data plan or att Nav, why give ATT more money when we already payed for the phone.
Felipe, have you tried Windows Live Mobile and/or Google Maps? Both work with GPS on my phone, but I haven't tested anything else. I know it's not a solution, but if we can track the performance over several phones, we might get closer to a solution.
I can confirm that mine worked fresh out of the box with both of these apps.
BCH238,
Windows Live Mobile is working and it sees the GPS using intermediate driver.
Now if we can only unlock the GPS intermediate driver so that garmin xt can see it.
I had to do this for the blackjack 2 using MoDaCo.SmartphoneGPSActivator.COM4.CAB
but i can not run this in Jack because its locked down. and the cab is not certified.
So far nothing GPS related, except google, live or, att (that have been mentioned so far), will see the gps device.
Is there a way to get google or live to not use data and read maps off of storage?
I cant even get pocket streets 2004 to run. then again it is old.
NOT WORKING:
GPStest
Garmin
tomtom
MS Pocket streets 2004 won't install too old
Argh....
It is a shame AT&T has crippled this so badly. All I want is to make a few modest tweaks that were no problem on my original Blackjack. Oh well, hopefully someone will come up with a workaround to unlock the registry in the not-too-distant future...
no maps off of storage
the only option i found was cache maps on SD card. but it still uses dataplan when you launch live maps.

In the same boat.....
I have the same problem with my Propel Pro....can't unlock the bloomin registry....AT&T is killing me!! I've waited to find a good deal on a wm smartphone that I could tweak and customize but I'm feeling really unsatisfied with this device so far....I've tries all sorts of reg editors and unlock methods to no avail....anyone have any luck yet????
None yet. At&t and Samsung have really locked these babies down. IT SUCKS.
Is there a way to build a cab file out of one that will install (ex. google maps)
with the regestery mods (out of one of the unlocker cabs) needed to unlock the phone. Basically tricking it.

[Q] Data Connectivity Problem - Android Browser

I posted this in the official android bugs issues forum: [forum wont let me link there until 8 posts] but I dont think i'm getting a response anytime soon. So ill try here somewhere active.
Phone: Samsung Galaxy S, using 2.2
I am trying to access a website (which I wont name, its private sorry) from my phone. This website had been working on a 3g connection for a considerable time until recently, The only reason for this post is that im 99% sure its a bug otherwise I wouldn't bother, so please do not ignore.
My troubleshooting:
1. The website is up and running, because I can access it on my desktop.
2. The website works on default android browser with WIFI on.
3. The website works in OPERA MINI With both WIFI and 3G.
4. The website does not work in default browser with 3G on (other websites work, bbc, yahoo, google etc). It also doesn't work in other browsers. Dolphin Browser, Firefox Beta, Mirren whilst using 3g etc But it does work on these browsers when accessing via WIFI. However it works in OPERA MINI (3g and wifi). My understanding is OPERA MINI is a proxy browser that delivers Web pages fed through Opera's servers and thats why I believe this works on OPERA but not on androids default browser or other similar browsers.
5. My brother has the same phone and network provider as me and he CAN access the website on 3G on the default browser (remember I used to be able to access it on the default too until recently), this all but eliminates a mobile network provider error, and pretty much points to a phone related issue.
My conclusion is that all these browsers share files/settings based in android OS and something has got corrupt that relates to site in question. DNS cache or Proxy setting or something along these lines.
Additional info this website is on a subdomain
1. vvww.sitename.com WORKS on 3G + WIFI with default browser
2. subdomain1.sitename.com WORKS on 3G + WIFI with default browser
2. subdomain2.sitename.com WORKS on WIFI with default browser but does not work in 3G Using androids default browser.
Im positive a setting somewhere in the phone that relates to subdomain2.sitename.com under 3G and has become corrupt. I need to correct that but I dont know where to look. My gut feeling is its something to do with proxy, as it works on opera with operas proxy.
Edit: tried clearing proxy entry in setting (my provider doesnt use a proxy setting anyway)
Does anyone have any ideas?
anyone with any idea.
i will rephrase the question if it helps:
I cant access a certain website only when using 3g!!! it works on wifi!!!
It does not work in any browser, The only web browser where it works is opera mini.
What is the problem? 3g connection is working for all other websites!
I was having a similar problem yesterday after I upgraded the OS on my phone.
Let me describe what I am using:
HTC Glacier with Cyanogen 7 ROM including Google Apps.
I installed TransProxy 3.08beta and a few other applications, made some config changes, enabled / disabled proxy a few times and later on the browser application that was included with the ROM would not connect to 3G data. It was working fine on WiFi. However Opera worked fine on either.
This is what fixed it for me:
1. Disable proxy in TransProxy
2. Create a shortcut for system proxy settings on home screen:
long press on home screen > custom shortcut > pick your activity > activities > settings > Proxy Settings(.ProxySelector)
3. Open proxy settings using the shortcut
4. Clear settings using 'Clear' button
5. Save
After this the browser started connecting to 3G data.
Hope this helps.
Cheers

How to get around tethering detection

As you all know most US (and i believe other) carriers try to charge us more for the data we already pay for if we want to use it in any method besides from our phone. There are a lot of apps that claim to get around it and it works for some and not for others, after some extensive google-fu and research i have found out that most if not all carriers use one of two methods of detecting tethering. 1.if the built in tethering is used the phone will use a separate tether specific apn 2.they look at the TTL of a packet, if tethering is being used the TTL will last past the WAN of the phone.
So i set out to try and find a way around this and a method of tethering that would work safely for all and get around TTL detection and i believe i have now found it.
Things you will need:
-Root
-ConnectBot
-ProxyDroid
-PDAnet (or any other tethering app)
-Something to SSH into
I will post more detailed instructions with screenshots and such if anyone wants but for now ill just keep it simple. Make sure your phone is on 3/4G. Open ConnectBot and connect to your ssh server, bring up the options menu and select port forwarding. Setup a dynamic (socks) proxy on port 8080 (or w/e you feel like) now open proxydroid and set host to 127.0.0.1 and make sure to enable global proxy (this does not work on all phones if it does not work for you then there is not much you can do) now open up a browser and go to any of the various ip checking sites and make sure your ip is showing up as the ssh servers ip and not a mobile one. Now enable pda net and do the same from the tethered device. If the ip is showing up as the remote servers then congratulations you are now tethering and they cant see the packets going to anything but the phone because everything is contained within the SSH session. Meaning the TTL on packets will end at the phones WAN as they expect them to.
I have been doing this on AT&T for some time now (around a month) and so far they have not found out and all is well, hope this helps at least a few people good luck!

Hey, as long as we have our Freedom Fries, we're happy.
And fat.
I tried following you instructions, but when I try to visit a website no connection is available. What ssh server are you using. Have any idea where I may have gone wrong?
Thanks
Has anyone been able to get this working. Whenever I select "Global Proxy" in ProxyDroid, I get no data. I changed the host to 127.0.0.1, but should I leave the port to default 3128 and Proxy Type to HTTP? Is there any other changes I should make in ProxyDroid? Thanks

Make sure you set the user agent on your computer browser to mobile. Had to do tethering for a client few days ago, and that was the problem. For Firefox and Chrome there are plugins for it.
Thanks for your response....I haven't gotten to the PC as yet. I am don't get any internet connection when I enabled ProxyDroid in with Global Proxy checked. And the OP said to make sure it is selected. So this is where I am stuck. Not sure whether I need to do any other configuration in regards to ProxyDroid. But thanks for your help.
