Touch: HD ~ $180, Pro ~ $120, Diamond ~ $108 - General Topics

*Mods please feel more than free to move this where you think might be more appropriate. I just wanted to make sure everyone at least had a chance to look at it and know about it, and knew that mostly only people who already had Diamonds would be in the Diamond forum.
*There is a link in my sig a post over at ppcgeeks. I will be keeping that one updated and current much more often. This is kind of just a general thing to look at, but that is where I will be keeping things updated and such simply because thats where I posted it first.*
PLEASE REFER TO THE POST OVER AT PPCGEEKS INSTEAD OF THIS ONE (link in my sig). IT IS MUCH MORE UP TO DATE AND WILL CONTINUE TO BE AS SUCH. Feel free to post here if you perhaps dont have a membership at ppcgeeks (tho I would highly recommend becoming a member there if you are not). I am just leaving this one here for kicks.
"Ok, so this is my little post about how I am able to get phones for real cheap. It is not a lame scam or anything stupid like that. I hope that you can look at my name, how many times I have been thanked and where, and my little green reputation squares etc, and perhaps the posts that I have made in order to trust this a little better for your benefit. Vogue users should find this easier as they know a little more about me.
The moral of the story is:
I have discovered a really interesting way of obtaining phones and other like things (and I think this MAY be how a lot of people on eBay always have them so cheap, but I don't really know).
The prices I have quoted in the title are rough estimates. The cost could swing either way probably about $69. Hopefully, my prediction that these prices are a little on the high side is correct.
As time goes on, these (like anything else) will become cheaper. This also applies (I think, still researching) to my deal here. So if the Diamond soon drops $100 in price, it will also do so accordingly here (again, this concept I am still researching but should know for sure within a few days).
I am currently not sure how to handle all requests and..."orders" I guess you would put it. I don't think the forum system is really going to be that efficient, neither the PM system. Let me know if you have any suggestions.
Real problem: you are all going to think "this is too good to be true". And very understandably. I'm not sure how to get you folks to take a rational logical approach to this and think it through rather than shying away with the "if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is", which, undoutbedly, some of you already have done :S. If I throw all the details at you right now, I really don't think youre going to believe it. I am trying to write this right now so that I would read on and be curious at the very least if it were me. And I am also aware that if I threw all the details out here, I would also not believe it myself.
The concept is affiliate marketing and referrals. If anyone reads this and knows what I am talking about, plz vouch for me or something. The odds are little to none of the people reading this will, but I figured it couldn't hurt to put down.
I know 100% that I can get ahold of all European (GSM) versions of each of these phones (which could of course unlocking them would be the idea), and I can start doing that now. Obviously I will not be getting ahold of a US CDMA HD soon as it will probably be a very long time till its made that way if ever (

).
The CDMA US Diamond, on the other hand, I believe that I can get probably within a few weeks.
The CDMA US Pro, probably about two months (judging from the 10/19 release date, if it turns out to be 11/2 it will be accordingly later).
I MAY be able to get the CDMA US Diamond and Pro now just as with the GSM versions, but that is another issue that I am still currently researching. I will update this post accordingly with new information (hopefully I should know this specific piece within a few days).
I'm really not too sure what else to say. Please no flaming, I'm not trying to scam anybody or anything and yes it is for real. If you are going to be close/narrow minded and get pissed that I am claiming this and not even consider it, please do not post and move on over this thread as if you had never read it
If you think there might be a chance of truth here, shoot me a PM as that is the way that I will currently be handling this until I figure out a better system. Email will work more than fine as well, in fact that may be even better.
I know that this here will scare some people away, but it is part of the deal so I guess I had better just say it: To do this will cost you somewhere in between $5-$6, depending on tax. At 6.35%, that is about $5.31. This is not a cost I am charging and will receive, though the ~ $5.50 (lets say $5.50 to be pessimistic) may be able to be negotiated down.
If you have never heard of Netflix, or Blockbuster Online, please research them before contacting me or posting here.
Oh! Jeez I guess I had better add that this is not illegal.
Also, this can be done in Canada, the US, or the UK.
I was more than skeptical about this at first too, but am now a believer.
You are not buying the phones from me, so don't mistake me trying to give back to the community more as a chance to scam you all; I am not the one making the $$ here.
Ok so now I really can't think of anything else that needs to be said. Here goes posting this beast for the first time (probably gonna end up beating my flashing how to for vogue op in length!), hopefully no one goes getting crazy.
As I said previously, I'll update as I go (I'm sure I'll think of something in 10 min lol).
It is real, k? Its not free, its not a scam, and you are required to do a little bit of work. I will say that it is easy, and it does work.
lemme know,
Jim."

i sent you an pm...

hmmm very interesting!

That is interesting. Not to be a retard or anything, but where does this money go? So if I read the whole article right, you're charging $5.50 to us so we can get the method of how to get these phones for cheap right?

PM You. lets see how fast things are gonna move.

No, sorry if i wasnt clear enough. Please refer to the post over at ppcgeeks as it is more up to date and such. But the ~$5.50 does NOT go to me. It is (obviously) pretty complex. But I am not the recipient of the $5.50 (as you will see). (altho that would be nice )

lol NO. it surprises me that even here on xda and ppcgeeks how few ppl can actually read. you DO NOT PAY ME. YOU NEVER WILL. get it everyone? lol...jeez. answering questions is fine, but answering the same one 100x/day is a little lame.

pyramid or "ponzi" scheme
If anything that has happened in the US has showed if it sounds too good to be true it probably isnt

Yea def man, I need to see a video. With actors that say they are not actors. Also these actors must say "this product works" "Im Giussepe Franco I dont own the company! I don't own anything about it!"

see.. i dunno, this sounds like some **** like AMWAY or a Pyramind scheme like the other member said.
$180 for a phone that is retailed at $900+ at the moment..
i dunno meng..and yea im a member over at ppcgeeks and the members over there are calling shannigans as well..
i need proof and substantial proof at that!

It's called MLM (multi-level marketing)... slightly different than a pyramid scheme but most people get screwed all the same. Put it this way... the first several people who paid the $5 (not the first people here at XDA, the first people who got on board with this particular program) will probably end up getting a phone for that price. Most will not.
Sorry Jim, you seem like a decent guy, and I hate to see YOU get screwed too. MLM is older than the day is long, and each "program" fizzles out long before MOST of the contributors get the product that they contributed for.
Stay away from this guys. You too Jim.

I'm not saying we pay you, but we have to pay SOMEONE, and that's what I don't trust... Money leaving my possession without full details on where and why it's going there.
I'm a full out skeptic, but I'm not about to accuse you of running a scam until I hear bad things about it, so as I said, once a reputable member (not a user with 3 posts) posts on here that they got their Touch HD for $200, I'll be on that right away. I hope for everyone's sake this is true, as it'd turn out to be great... And if it is, thank you in advance for helping us.

alrighty, now that is a much better approach. just to get this out there (and I suppose I had better update the OP on ppcgeeks as well), you dont ever pay out any money before you know whats going on. its not like you pay 6 then figure out what the heck is going on

4. be sure to become familiar with netflix and blockbuster [online].

Why must we know that? How about you PM me with the details. I'd love to read the few very long posts.

I had a email from a very nice lady in Nigeria whose poor husband had been killed, he was a general in the army and very rich and all I had to do was give her my bank details so she could deposit his $10,000,000 into my account so she could gain access to it. All I had to do was let her have my secret password
and send her some money and for my help I got 10% for doing it.
Really its true, my balance has gone to zero but she said this is normal and my $1,000,000 should be in my account any day now.
So i dont need to join this scheme as I have plenty of money to by a Touch HD at full price but I am sure it will work just as well as my Nigerian deal has

My bid is 50. Any takers?
No offense, but what Treo have you loaded the WM6 OS on? I have seen more than one thread where you have upgraded it. Did you have two? If so, why are you selling just one for the iPhone?
Also, you can't really be serious about the iPhone. Have you even looked at the Tilt?? I was in your boat, with the Treo 750, wanting something more. I bought the Tilt and never looked back.
it is possible thati have more than one,,, i wasn't gonna screw around with my everyday user..lol this is the one i never messed with... besides, palm has no new phone planned for AT&T and im kinda tired of it.... once i get the iphone i won't have to goto numerous sites everyday hoping for some hot news about an update that isn't coming. lets face it, palms tech support sux and when you use the internet client to talk to them they use pre-typed statements that aare selected from topics. they click on it and it apears in the chat window... I shouldn't have to rely on some bogus software to make the phone do every other treo 750 now does. picking up my shiney new iphone thursday

It "is" possible, but "very" unlikely. Especially after I found this old post of yours.........
From this point on he led into reasons why i should be using it with out it being released and such which is to be expected. He also stated that doing to much to the phone can possibly make the phone upgradable when the real WM6 update is released. This he mentioned were changing the boot loader, IPL and SPL software in the phone, that and using bogus releases of software. The reason being he said was that the soon to be released update probes the phone deeply because everything has been updated including the boot loader stuff.
Now i cant confirm or deny any truth to these statements but the only thing i had done with mine was a try a few new firmwares but after my conversation with them i quickly reverted back to WM5.
here is a link to get it if anyone is interested in doing the same. Download either or, they are the same. included is the cheeimg.nbh and the cheediag.nbh. the cheediag.nbh wont complete is you have othere that cingular WM5 on ur cingular treo 750.

Call me crazy, but I looked at "all" of your posts on 2 different forums (just a quick search), and not 1 mention of "phones" or "one of my phones". Get the iPhone, I'm sure you will be happier. Then try reading more and posting less. And good luck selling that Treo.
Of course this is just my opinion, I could be wrong. I'm not sure, but I think it's happened to me once before...................
Woohoo!!! No more inane posts by jhowle. Could it really be true.
I tried to call him out without actually accusing him, but it doesn't take a brain surgeon to tell he's lying. If anyone is actually considering buying his phone, think twice. It's been through a few reflashes for sure... If he can't be honest about that, what else could he be lying about?
alright,, i'm pissed Flapjack... What are we roomates now, or are you just stalking me,, You have no ****ing clue how many phones i have.. you can read between the lines all god damn day but still the truth remains. i have 2 750's, i have 2 phone numbers. When you filed the complaint with the "webmaster", did you also mention your foul-mouthed tirade?
So you say you're a 12-year Air Force member? Apparently you don't understand what your duties as an Air Force member are.
...oh, and by the way, you are talking to an Air Force officer. You have a commitment to excellence that doesn't change whether you're on or off-duty. You might want to consider the things you say online, as they could affect your career. I personally could care less. But you never know when some Colonel looking for a replacement for his Blackberry might be a member of a message board you frequent. You may think you're some anonymous entity online, but I GUARANTEE you it would not be very hard for someone with the "know-how" to figure out who you are and file a complaint.
Think you can't get in trouble for the things you say/do online? Read this:

...oh, and after reading your posts here and on other forums, I can say with pretty much 100% accuracy that if you had two phones, you would've mentioned it. You've pretty much detailed every non-phone aspect of your life through your posts. Being as though your chatting on a "phone" forum, I can't believe you wouldn't talk about having an extra phone to experiment with....

It sounds to me like you are taking things a bit too personally. When you came on an internet message board expecting people to be civil is where you went wrong. Personally, I wouldn't go somewhere I could get flamed for a comment without being able to tolerate getting flamed for a comment.
Couple that with the fact that you have NEVER mentioned having a second phone to play with and you have the perfect recipe for an INTERNET ARGUMENT.
As far as your inflammatory post where you reduced yourself to cursing, swearing, name calling, and other "unprofessional" acts, you took the conversation to a stage no one else here was at. So if you want to leave... leave. But no one here is asking you to go.

I have to agree. Now that I've gone PPC, I can never go back to the BB format. I don't know why everyone preaches about how good their "push" email is. It is just a fancy form of forwarding, and is many times more load intensive than Exchange Direct Push.
I run my own server, so I saw first-hand how the server being a BES trashed the server and the network. Not to mention, it's a whole 'nother program you have to install. EDP is already configured as part of Exchange. All you have to do is forward port 443 to the Exchange server, and BAM, it works. Not to mention, it's true synchronization.

The developers got the phone and the mobile networks working. This means we are at the moment able
- to call and answer the phone
- download apps from the appstore
- syncronize our contacts with google-
- send&receive sms, e-mails.
- Wifi partialy working
- GPS partialy working
But a lot of functions don't work. These are:
- no Bluetooth
- no Camera
- short battery life // imporve with lastest kernel
There are developers working on fixing these problems.

Let me make this clear so there are no confusions about these donations:
We are, and have been collecting for the two main developers on this project so that they could and can purchase a Polaris to help us complete our quest for a fully working kernel.
We approached vilord and asked him if he would help us if we sent him a phone to which he agreed so we raised enough for him to purchase one.
Because we were still getting donations after we had raised the amount for vilords Polaris, "I" decided to continue and see if we could raise enough to send one to dzo as well (lets face it he deserves it) and asked him if he would be interested. I was pleasantly suprised when dzo said yes and also the fact that he likes the look of the the pola200 and would probably switch to it as CDMA is being phased out where he is. I dont have to spell out what having dzo as a Polaris user could mean to us hence my renewed pledges for donations.
In the end, these donations are a means to self-interest for all of us and if the dev benefits from the device, all the better.
Anyone is free to make a donation to a dev whenever they wish. The reason i ask users not to make pledged for donations for finishing projects is that to me sounds disrespectful to the devs - no matter of the pledgers intention - who do this for the community and never for financial gain.
Please do not reply to this post, it was for making intentions clear and not to start a topic of conversation.
thank you

Quote Bally3:
"We will consider sending a second Polaris to one of the other active developers if it should help the development process and if enough donations are received to purchase one. Please do not post pledges of donations to this thread, it is better to post what you have donated so that there is a record of what has been donated rather than pledge a donation that may not be made honoured later, pledges of donations will not help the development process - Thank you for your understanding".

Now vilord is looking for a Polaris on ebay.
I will post any updates here.
another post reserved to list the huge numbers of donatings ;-)
Why not just buy a G1 if your fed up of winmo ....?
this is a very stupid question...but i will explain it to you!
Maybe i started this thread because I own a htc polaris which can run ANDROID
Second reason could be that a new G1 costs about 300€ and i will donate only 15$!
Maybe there a a few reasons mor but i think it is enough....please if you DON'T like the idea you don't have to post here.
But i'm open for any suggestions.
I'm not able to change my phone until next year so if we could get a better version of android working for the polaris that would be excellent. I'd be willing to donate $15
I have Cruise / Polaris ; I Love it .. that's why I bought a second one, for my father.
I enjoy GPS with iGO8, but I'm fed up with WM 6
Right now I use Adroid 1.5 ION to call & browse the web .... and WM for the GPS ; if I buy a G1, exit iGO8 and/or GPS.
Morever, my phone cell operator slates the G1 (Dream) wich isn't so pretty as G2 (Magic) ; if I have to buy another phone, it should be G2 (Magic) or G3 (Hero) ... but it's the other phone cell supplier and costs too much.
So, 30 $ for a bootable Adroid on my phone and the one of my father, with wifi, camera, MMS & GPS fonctionnal, I buy immediately !!
Regards.
add 15 bucks from me!
I'd definitely pay $15 for this.
Count me in for another $15 definately for a full working version, pls PM me when u need the cash! = ready
This is a great idea! Count me in for 25 USD.
The notion of a bounty is good. But even if we raise lets say $500 it still does not guarantee a working Android on the Polaris. The devs are already working as hard as they can and are probably spending hours after hours on this (albeit not on the Polaris). And still even the other models lack WiFi, GPS, Camera etc...
I just don't see any developers come running and manageing this just because we raise some money. A developer does these things to satisfy personal curiosity, as a personal challenge to better his skills or to gain "kudos" in the scene.
And except for a big challenge there is simply not much gain for a developer to take on such a large task. To do what you ask even a skilled developer must lay down 100's of hours.
But hey, I'm happy to support the cause with say $15 if you think it will make any difference.
(In order for this to work someone that both we and the devs trust, like a forum moderator, must create a paypal account that we can send money to. Also if this never happens the money goes back to the donator. It's something different to say you are willing to donate, and actually pay the money. This way the developer knows what he's getting.)
As a side note we could also try rentacoder.com or similar services. If you specify exactly what you need then developers from all around the world can bid on the job or we can specify a max bid.
I also would like to have a working version for my HTC Touch Cruise.
I will donate $ 20 USD.
20$ more from me if you have a fully-fledged working Android port for Polaris.
Add me to the list.
count me in
$20 from me also
$20 for a fully working android from me
and like someone else said. we need actual money ready and waiting somewhere. just saying we will give something is not enough.
if a trusted person can make a paypal account and start picking up donations we can bring ppl in.
we can even give starter cash to the developer for first bigger brakethrough. i have 1 guy in mind that would probably love to do something like this and i doubt this would be too difficult for him but there wouldnt be much of a gain for him unless we can pay him.
we'll see how things go.
Didnt we need to start with finding people who will do this port?
This is like a virtual money collection which does not make any sense,
as there are no people doing this port job....

OK that seems to be the only possibility...I'm thinking also of an mod or a person with over 1000 posts ;-)
I'm staying in contact with bally3.... when we found someone everybody can decide if he wants to give the money to this person!
I was interested in how much money we can collect and it seems we are a really GREAT community. Thanks to all people

I'll second that w04g005, I'm really impressed how fast we raised the amount, so a big THANK YOU to all and WELL DONE folks!
To answer some of the questions here, the reason for doing it this way is that we need a dev with a Polaris in his hand so that he can make the changes needed to make things work on our device.
GPS, camera and even bluetooth are either already working on the other devices or are already in progress but it WI-LL take a dev with one of our devices in their actual hands to make these changes. As far as I know (and please correct me if I'm wrong) there are are no Polaris-specific drivers that need to be written, just changes to code to make existing ones work on the Polaris.
But I'll re-iterate what I've said before, please be under no illusions of promises, guarantees or timelines. The only unspoken guarantee we have is that devs will do to the best of their abilities to help us. As pananza pointed out devs dont do this for money, but they do need a device to speed up the development.
I've made a proposal in the main thread, please have a read and post your comments. As I've said before, I'm open to all suggestions.
But as an added tasty selling point: How great is it that they're already discussing the best way of making an Android rom already? That could quite easily be us soon
I will throw $25 U.S. at this.

1-Star spamming on the android market. Anyone else had the same problem??!

Hey guys,
Just wondering if anyone else has been on the end of a 1-star spamming from a "competing" developer? I say "competing", because my apps are all free!
Here is an example of someone coming along and spamming my rating:
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
As you can see, the application doesn't get reviewed very often. I think it must have got above the search ranks for a certain developers app, and then boom, 20 1-star ratings.
Anyone else had the same problem? You would have thought google can see it's the same person/dev and act appropriately. Imagine this is more of a problem for people trying to make money from the marketplace!
I've had 1 star ratings from my competition (I could tell because they used their real names for their comments) but not 20 ratings all in one go like that.
Btw what app are you using to track ratings?
The app is Andlytics, it's excellent for tracking like this. They just pushed an update with much more detail as well. Would recommend it.
Still can't believe people would spam a free app like that. It's just sad!
You should name and shame
Also I think you should only be able to rate if you are willing to write a review for it. Would cut down on this a bit..

Well. The app above is a caller id application (NameBuzz). When you searched for "caller id", it briefly came in 3rd place, now it comes in 11th after the rating hit. So I'm assuming it's one of the developers above that... but obviously I have no way of being sure, so I can't name and shame!
Curious, I only see 6 1 stars, and they're all basically saying "it vibrates after answering". So maybe you have a problem with specific phones?
I don't know if it helps, but you might put some text in there about how to contact you and how to contact you and that you can't help people just based on comments alone. I myself didn't realize that a developer can't contact you from a comment until after using the market for a bit.

Thanks for feedback. The 20, 1-star ratings, were left WITHOUT a comment. Hence the reason you can't see who it's from (not that the name means much), and you can't see the ratings. All that happens is the app drops rating level drastically. However, from the developer console, you can see that 20 ratings have been made.
The comment about contact details, I guess I should put that in there, but I think the comments you refer to are actually quite old - since around my January release, the issues have been virtually non-existent. I think the issue here is a basic spamming of my application by someone fairly bored, and extremely sad.

Hey doug,
That's an awesome article! haha. Wasn't expecting that kind of support! It seems like you may have had an impact as well, as my historical rating now looks like this:
Seems as though I've found someone with an non-compatible device though (hence the one star lurking in there), unfortunately, people rarely leave what phone they're using in the comments!
I think the discussion on how to improve the android ratings system is a really interesting one, and something I'm sure Google must have on their TODO list...
I totally wish that Google would fix the rating and comments sections... You can't moderate the comments at all and people spam them with all kinds of bull****. I frequently have users (who must be mentally retarded) leave 1 star ratings and ****ty comments about my apps when a simple search would tell them that the problem is their stupid phone/carrier (an example would be streaming shoutcast on a Sprint EVO which has been broken by HTC since early December). Holy **** I could rant on and on about the comments/ratings for hours... it pisses me off every day!~
EDIT: I wanted to mention that I did get Google to remove one comment but they still left the 1 star rating... some dumbass got his credit card stolen and blamed me for it. On many occasions over the last couple of months I have seriously considered just not making anymore apps for Android because the comments/ratings sections are bull****.
You could try using alternative markets, but none of them have anywhere near the number of users that the official market does.
I can't write an article to support but i downloaded you're app and gave 5*s plus great review, every little helps!

You should see ratson's twitter. I made a comment if he got yet another "1 star, what is root" review for his killer app and he replied that he was already used to such ratings.
On the bright side, at least you have to own the app to rate it. I'm not sure if they've changed this, but in the App Store you could rate apps without actually owning them. A friend of mine basically got spammed by competition and they didn't even have to buy his app.

Honestly, you should avoid reading the comments every day.
I absolutely agree that it's brutal and stressful to read Market comments. So I don't check them too often. If there's a real bug, I'm not going to be able to debug it from a Market comment anyway, I need someone to email me for that. Emails can be brutal too, but generally if someone takes the time to write an email they're at least a bit more considerate than the Market commenter. Also you can actually reply to an email and most times even a pissed off user feels a lot better if they get a reply, even if it's just saying "Sorry, this sounds like a bug, can you give me some more information?".

Lol, totally familiar with the problem. i get ppl recommending not buying an app because I would charge their credit card four times. Or ppl saying that my keyboard have damaged all other keyboards on their device
Here's a tip. Buy your own app with another account. Create a nickname "support" and react on troll comments. Give them tips, ask them to contact you etc. It helps to ease your mind. And I agree with [email protected] don't read the comments too often, in the end honest comments will dominate.
I give a five to every app I choose and works as promised. those 1-star spammers are losers!
i actually went and got your app and gave you a five star rating
but yeah, looks like we got some shady dev on android. google needs to fix this.

First off, thanks guys, I'll post progress again in the next few days, but this is nice reminder that the community does have more power than one spiteful developer (or his "marketing" team).
The comments section can be infuriating at times. I would like to be able to write a one-time comment (visible to all), which would be emailed to the person leaving the comment. That way issues could actually be resolved.
With the Android fragmentation issues in the state they are in, I have no idea on which devices I can expect namebuzz to actually work. I have two phones to test with, and the emulator provides little help. Hence, to simply be able to ask what devices are causing issues, would be a huge insight into fixing or notifying users of known issues.
I just feel sorry for the developers relying on the Android marketplace for revenue, they must be hugely affected by this, and I'm glad I'm not in their shoes...

XDA: The time is right

Dear XDA: I think the time has come for you to step out of the shadows. I was at Barnes and Noble the other day and started looking for a magazine in their sizable magazine section. I was frustrated when i went to look for a magazine about android -anything- and found zero mags. However, i did happen to find 12 magazines covering apple. Soo i searched online and to my dismay have only found one magazine that covers android and only apps. Please save all of us who love android and need something to read on the toilet. I promise you i will be the first to subscribe. There is a desert wasteland when it comes to android magazines and you could be our oasis. Seems like now could be the opportune time.
(sorry for the dramatics...just thought it would be fun to post my thoughts about this...)
A magazine on Android ? hmmm...
It's a good idea. There's inough content out there right now to fill a year's worth of monthly editions. I'd subscribe (as long as it wasn't priced unreasonably), and it could open way more people to Android rooting/flashing/modding...

Sounds cool. But sounds dangerous for xda also. Just thinking that people who aren't supposed to root or mod their phones might pick up a magazine andtry, then fail, maybe even brick their phones, and then they try sue xda. All i'm trying to say is I think it's best for people who don't have the mindset for modding or whatnot, to not be introduced to it or even tempted.

A Warning on any article helps, they cannot get sued just because someone brick their phone, it wont be XDA fault.
Yeah but some narrow-minded twit is bound to try and go after xda at some point anyways, if it hasn't happened already. And there's always an opportunistic lawyer to accomodate (apologies to any members who happen to be lawyers lol). That's why there are disclaimers at the top of almost every thread. At least magazine revenue would help pay the legal defense fees.
This site has gotten so big since Android got hot, there's a constant influx of people who just bought their first smartphone and already know they want it rooted with CM7 and A2SD, but have no idea how to make it happen. If properly implemented, the mag could be a roadmap to get them started, and teach them some forum etiquitte (search, read, search, read, find correct forum to ask in) before they end up neck deep in technical terms they've never heard before, and a device that no longer boots. Beats following some half-ass youtube video with a megaupload link and then having a first post on xda titled 'help i bricked my...'
Edit: damn you, skepticalguy, you stole my spot ;-p

A warning/disclaimer won't be a magical 'no lawsuit' pass for anyone. If enough people face issues and ends up bricking their devices, the magazine will get sued. Whether the lawsuit succeeds or not is up in the air, but I doubt it's 100% guaranteed to fail and, more likely than not, retailers selling the magazine will then ask themselves if they should continue stocking it or not.
And, of course, we're just talking about lawsuits from regular folks. Imagine if Google (or any number of other corporations involved in profiting from Android) gets a hold of the news that there's a magazine out there advising the general population on hacking the OS. Somehow, I think this is going to be another one of those times when 'Do No Evil' no longer applies.
If XDA decides to gets its own magazine, it should do what others have done: Give advice to look up how to do it, but do not offer any direct advice. If the people reading the magazine decides to continue doing it, then they only have whatever advice source they looked up to blame if something screws up. Of course, this still doesn't give the 'No Lawsuits' pass, but it'll probably be a much stronger case for the magazine.
All of this could just be my pessimism speaking, so no one has to feel that what I said will be unalterable reality. Still, it seems like an awful lot of risk for an attempt to get into a market that is supposedly not doing so well. I mean, there's nothing wrong with being online-exclusive. I doubt Engadget, with its 5+ million visitors, is complaining.
True true. The xda portal is pretty much like engadget itself. And engadget gets some of its news from xda also. Guess the problem is, the amount of people that are interested in hacking and modding, which is a relatively small amount. And well, as said before, we don't want to be inviting people who aren't supposed to be hacking or modding, else we get more threads saying how they bricked their phones. So maybe it's best to just stay as it is now.
^ Yes, you are right about that, but perhaps it's not as matter of exposure.
Look at the iPhone. Jailbreaking is much more widespread than Android rooting, but last I heard, it was still only about 2-4% of the entire iPhone userbase that was doing it. As others mentioned, there are several iPhone/Apple magazines too.
I think hacking has always been the domain of a small number of folks who probably knows the method to find out how to do such things by themselves anyway. The overwhelming majority probably doesn't want to hack and additional exposure by magazines to them might increase the hacking community by a small amount, but probably not any very significantly.
Rooting/jailbreaking/custom ROMS/etc will probably continue to be the domain of folks like those who frequent XDA and it's unlikely that it'll ever be as popular as, say, downloading MP3s until it becomes a super easy/risk-free task that has an undeniable benefit to the common man.
But frankly, I don't see a need to make it as common as downloading MP3s anyway. XDA is freely available to anyone who wants to know and, for those who don't want to know, let them continue using a stock Samsung Nexus S.
Yes... xda is the way forward! It is improving alot!!!!!!!!!

i agree that the developer should be supported, but, if you like me and cant even afford a 1$ app, using their app and telling people how great it is is the next best thing.
Thanks for the heads up. Its a shame it can't be done but I guess that's what ROMS are for. Maybe Reactive Disorder will see this and kung fu it into one of his. I can see where your coming from but its a little different in the music world. At my shows there is the expensive seats up front, cheap seats in the back and free out in the field. I am not saying that I am after everyone's money just give me credit for my work. I have had people steal my sheet music and claim it as their own before. That doesn't mean I won't make money at all but I put a lot of work into that and to have someone else say they did it is what pissed me off. He could have had it if he just asked but that was weeks of my time lost and I have nothing to show for it. When it comes to apps I agree that there should be a free trial for all of them, but if its not and you can only get it by paying then if you want it bad enough you will buy it. If making apps was my only source of income and someone leaked it and everyone gets it for free without at least donating then I would starve. That's what gets me so riled up.
It's like every thread on here, ReActive butts in and it goes way off-topic (or he just insults someone for posting about a dream), but I can't stay away from this one as it speaks to the core of my principals.

...so how does that change if he asked? What do you have to show for it then that you lost by him not asking? Even if he doesn't ask, you can still say: Hey, I made that, and people are benefiting from it. Isn't that why you create art, so people can enjoy it? Does it really matter if they know who the artist is or not (if you are not trying to make money off it)?

Back to money again. Money is a false construct and has nothing to do with art, skill, or creativity. If your only source of income is payment from individuals for something you can copy and reproduce without costing you any money or time, then you are in the wrong business. If I can't hold it in my hand, it is not a commodity, it is simply knowledge/information/directions/instructions. All of those things should be free to the entire globe.
If I can see it, if I can hear it, if I can learn how to build it... then I have an undeniable human right to record it, copy it, modify it, and redistributed it to anyone and everyone. Not sharing your recipes/sheet-music with who ever is interested (for free) is a crime to my sense of morality/values. It is all just information, and the collection of all the worlds information should be freely available to every human on the planet.
"If I give you a pfennig, you will be one pfennig richer and I'll be one pfennif poorer. But if I give you an idea, you will have a new idea, but I shall still have it too" - Albert Einstein
You can't "build" it, pal.
Stealing my software (or anybody else's) is a crime.
Furthermore, it's not about the love and it's not about the people; it's about the money.
Anytime you publish any kind of IP, you know that there will be theft, but that doesn't mean I have to like it--or endorse it.
Furthermore, this site forbids piracy and if you go around proudly saying otherwise, you will proudly join Jin out there in the wild blue yonder.
If you can "build" all this great software, just make your own. No need to steal it if it's so trivial and easy for you.

I had a huge event to get ready for so getting back into the forums here to post has been challenging. Thank you Orange808. I was upset I couldn't get on to tell the other guy about how stealing from me hurt me, but you got to them first. I say that at the end of the day, no mater how you try to justify it, if you take something that's not yours without going through the proper channels you are a thief. I don't care what kind of Robin Hood complex you have, if you didn't compensate or do whatever else is asked of you to obtain the product, and even ideas can be products, you stole it. I am not ok with that at all. If you are ok with being a thief that's your problem, don't try to make me thank you for it. But with that all said we are way off topic. I started this thread to ask a question. It has been answered. I don't know how to close a thread on this forum, but it needs to be closed. If you want to argue about morality, START YOUR OWN THREAD! Please stop doing it on mine. Thank you.

Ok. I'm quite respectful, and will leave this thread alone as requested. Just know that I would never steal anything from anyone (which requires taking something physical away from them).

I don't have the time/patience to look up and post all of the links , but go to wikipedia and look up Intellectual property and you will see that it is protected and treated as real property with all of the same rights. That means that taking someones music, app, program or any other IP without their permission is still theft. Don't believe me ask a lawyer. As I said before. The original topic this thread was started for has been answered and this thread is closed. Start your own thread if you really want to hash this one out.

jeez, cmon. just because you arnt physically taking it away doesnt mean you didnt steal it, i steal. i can admit that, no im not proud of it but i cant afford any of it anyway. but having your moral compass pointed so far south like that is just wrong.

I did stay away for a while. Not trolling. Will stay away again... but I saw this today and felt I had to picture-post back to ReActive. Many other people share my morals. To us, "having your moral compass pointed so far [north] like that is just wrong."
