Possible to make Vox default to wifi connections over gprs? - HTC Vox

Hi everyone,
I would like to know if anyone knows how to make my Vox default to using a wifi connection instead of GPRS.
My phone often makes automated connections during the night and from my searches round the setup menus I have only found ways to make it connect to gprs connections or a already connected wifi.
So is it possible to make the phone enable and use a wifi connection 'on demand'?
Thanks in advance,
Jamie

Wi-Fi vs. GPRS/3G

I´m new to this xda-world and got my first HTC Touch Cruise.
Is it possible to set preferred connection when going online? Is there a setting that tells the phone to use Wi-Fi when possible, and just use GPRS when no other connection is availible.
That works as standard. If it detects a wifi connection it will always use that first, and only use GPRS/3G/HSDPA if the wifi connection is off.
really?
Hi,
My TC seems to use 3G connection (as seen through Spb GPRS Monitor) although I am connected via WIFI. How can I avoid that so as to use 3G only for phone, or when I am out of wifi for data?
Cheers,
Thomas

No internet via wifi?

Hi guys,
I've recently become the proud owner of a vodafone touch pro. However when connecting to wifi, opera etc will not find any webpages. Now i know my wifi is working and the phone connects fine and picks up the DHCP ip address.
What could I be doing wrong? I've noticed data connections is disabled but I believe this is just for GPRS etc? Either way how can I confirm my wifi connection is being used?
Many thanks
EDIT - NM it was because it was not set to work
Hi Scribe,
I had the same problem as yours. No solution so far. Had no problem with GPRS.
I have mine working good on either wifi or GPRS.
Probably it's wifi problem? Have you tried on another wifi connection?
what was not set to work?
I have the same issue, connects to wifi but no internet. laptop connects and browses fine, but touch pro (and also diamond) don't
Make sure when you set your wifi connection up you say that it is used to connect to work not the internet, also make sure your adapter settings say this.
The problem is that the phone will always default to GPRS/3G for the internet but if it senses a local work network it will use that first.
Stupid I know!
I have the same prob, I changed some settings and it works. Try change Authentication to Shared instead of WAP-PSK, Data Encryption to WEP instead of TKIP. After you have internet connection, you can change to previous wifi settings with same network key.
Mine has gone again! I swear it's because 'Connects to the internet' wont save in the proxy settings - nope not that and still wont work, I've also tried by disabling all security

priotize w-lan for internet connetions

-Does anyone know how to priotize w-lan for internet connections?
It seem that my phone always uses the mobile connections (GSM, 3G etc).
In menu for connections where internet connections can be created, I can't find anyting about w-lan.
This is something I've been meaning to ask about while I wait for the Fuze. By way of background, I have a Cingular 8525 with the original (WM5) ROM, and it drives me nuts using it at home. I only get EDGE inside my house, but the stupid phone persists in making an EDGE data connection instead of using the nice, fast Wifi connection that I just enabled. I use NoData to make sure it doesn't connect via EDGE or 3G, and then half the time it says it says that it can't connect -- even though the icon says that it is connected!! The only way I can reliably connect via Wifi is to go briefly into and out of flight mode, then turn on Wifi before connecting.
I'm really, really hoping that the situation is better with the Touch Pro/Fuze. Can anyone reassure me on that?
it should be accessing wifi first by default i believe...unless other connection is already connected
Hello!
Start first the WiFi Connection and then the Internet Explorer or Opera.

There's this stupid thing with wlan connections in WM - if connection type is set to 'Work', you can browse through files on other computers in (W)LAN at home, but any Internet connection wll be realised through GRPS/3G. To make it connect to the Internet using WiFi, you need to switch wifi type back to 'Internet'.
Maybe that's the thing?
Is there a way how to setup that the WiFi is connected to both (work AND internet)? I never saw WiFi connected only to work network... I assume there is no way but why not to ask ;-)
I know that many others have problem with that, but I didn't find any solution yet...
Because when I set it as work, my Exchange sync is working but no Internet, and when I switch to Internet, opera and QuickpGPS is working, but no Exchange sync (it is trying to open VPN connection because I need to go though inside address to the server because certificates and of course it cannot get it). Or I need somehow set that no VPN will be dealed on this WiFi network...
I need something like BOTH or Auto option.
It seems to be switching from Wlan to G / 3G / H when the signal is not that great. Mostly with the weather tab and Opera. Quick GPS works fine. The way I make sure it is on the internet through wlan is to shutdown the telephone and keep the wlan on with comm manager. The disadvantage is that anyone calling will be heading to your voicemail. Another option is to use the "Nodata" program, en disable to internet connections.
On Touch Pro, I usually just go to COMM MANAGER and switch on wifi and switch off data connection. It is only a couple of quick steps and saves battery, since you don't need both on, if you only want to use wifi.
I am sure there must be a more seamless solution, but I like easy fixes.

No it is not better. Turning on WiFi is not enough. It will continue to use the cellular data connection until you manually turn it off. This wouldn't be so bad, but in my experience I've had to push the button to turn off the cellular connection multiple times before it would actually do so. What would be really nice is if WM could seamlessly switch from the cellular network to WiFi, with zero user interaction, just like the iPhone does.
I got an other problem with wifi. When I establish a wifi-connection and pull my mail the ppc still connect with a data-canection and didn't use the wifi. My kaiser used the wifi-connection for that.

I wrote the original post before I had a chance to try it for myself. I've had a Fuze for three weeks now, and it works fine for me. I turn on wifi and the Fuze uses wifi. I turn it off and it goes back to normal wireless. (I did do the registry edits to turn on the HSDPA stuff in the connections tab and enabled the modified connection icons in the menu bar. I don't know if that had any effect on this issue or not, but it does what I would expect now.)

wifi or gprs?

Is there a program that would soon open (IE, oprera, skyfire) asked if you want to connect via GPRS or wi-fi?
Can't see that there would really be any point.
Applications using the internet will use any active connection. If Wi-Fi is connected it will use that, else it will use an active GPRS connection or start it up if it is not already active.
If this hypothetical program asked, and then activated the one that you chose, then I would be interested, but I have never seen such a app.
no disrespect.. but this would pretty much be a waste of time.. programing such an application. as you can enable wifi using one of your hardware buttons.
if you enabled wifi, internet explorer won't even try to connect to GPRS. if you didn't enable wifi, it would automatically connect thru GPRS.

Gmail issue?

I have my gmail account linked for pull notifications...
the problem is it will not connect to gmail via wifi rather it olny updates through the 3g data network.
I have checked the advanced settings where the connection type is set to internet but this doesnt change things...
Any suggestions?
make sure you have the wifi connected on and connected to the internet.
also, through the connection tab in settings make sure you have told it that internet connects to wifi,
although, it may be better for you to temporarily disable the data connection whilst you use the wifi if the above doesnt work.
Im for sure connected to my wifi network...
I make the other adjustments...
thanks for the reply!
hi
sometimes wm can be picky like that
why not update over the 3g network?
This comes up becasue I work in the basement of a building with little to no access to cell signal so I can enable wifi and connect but it will not sync wia wifi...
