Gmail on Windows Mobile Devices

I just picked up an HTC X7501 Advantage and I'm trying to find the best way to run Gmail on it. So far I've tried three methods:
1) running the web version on Pocket IE or Opera
2) the java app for gmail (http://www.google.com/mobile/mail/index.html)
3) Pocket Gmail (http://gmobile.phpmagazine.net/)
Of the three the java app crashes fairly often but seems to work the best when it runs. Pocket Gmail offers some options the others don't but doesn't look as good as the java app. the web version is probably the worst of the three.
I tried setting up Outlook to retrieve my gmail but it stopped after about 500 messages and only seemed to download the oldest ones. It also can't support threads (something I love).
How do other people run Gmail on Windows Mobile devices? Any ideas or suggestions?

To get around the POP / Outlook / which messages to retreive issue, there are little known commands to use in GMAIL. In your outlook setup for your Gmail account, prepend your usename with "recent:". So your username should look like
recent:[email protected]
See what happens when you retrieve messages now, this might be what you are looking for.
Wow, sounds like some usefull info. I'll try that later, thanks.
Thank you TC1. I'll give that a try as well!
Any chance of getting the other little known commands listed here.

T-Mobile Solution
Hi,
This may only work if you have T-Mobile in the US but I take advantage of T-Mobile's mail server for my gmail. I set up the account on t-mobile's website and access it on my phone using t-mobile's pop3 servers. Works great but every month or so I have to go on my t-mobile site and delete the old mail off or it stops collecting any new mail. Hope that helps somebody.

I just use the Java App, never had a problem with it crashing. Though, may depend on the midlet manager you use.

midlet manager? Huh?
The midlet manager is essentialy the PocketPC Java VM that you use to run java apps which in the case of mobile devices are called "midlets"

How do you get different ones? How do you tell which you have?
Thank you for the information.
So does no one have an answer to this? (See previous post directly above)...
if you search the forum for
"midlet AND manager"
you're sure to get link for a few
buzzdev.net also have 1 or 2
If you go into the "Java" application on your Programs folder, and press the Menu key or whatnot, there's usually an "About" option where you can see the build and name and whatnot...
Hope that helps

Man, I should have seen that. Thanks for pointing it out. Here's what it said.
"inten Java MIDlet Manager
Copyright 2003 - 2007 Tao Group Limited
Runtime MIDP 2.0: v10.1.7.575 (Build 20070403)
I'll check into some of the others. Does anyone have any experience with the one I mentioned above? Good/bad/otherwise?
Thanks!

this worked beautifully! been struggling with this problem for awhile! the funny thing is, when i first did the setup wizard, i remember outlook had automatically put the 'recent:' prefix in front of my username. but thinking it would be a problem, i deleted the prefix! totally forgot about that until this was mentioned..
Thanks!

As a new user, welcome to the forum!
Don't forget to read this!
Also, don't forget to use search! If you need something, Google it or use the builtin search function.
Here's your latest Windows Live Messenger.
Which version will work on my device please?
I've tried a few of those on that page but they won't work. :|
They either display a grey window when clicked upon or they show "Sign into Windows Live" but when I click that nothing happens.
Not sure how well it works on SmartPhones, but make sure it is installed in main memory, not SD.

How to use Hotmail?... and other confusing questions...

It's my first day with this new toy and I can't believe how difficult I find to cope with this TouchFLO thing. Maybe it's because I have been using Windows Mobile since the days of HandheldPCs on WindowsCE but I find that this interface is just too inflexible for me. The fact that you can see only the next appointment is an absolute deal breaker for me: I just can't go through my work day without having a clear view of all my appointments!
Anyway my question is actually on a different subject: my previous device had WM5 and setting up a Hotmail account was extremely easy, now when I try to set up a Hotmail account in Outlook Mobile, Opera opens and I reach a page to download Windows Live from the Microsoft site. I don't understand.... Windows Live is preinstalled and the Messenger is already running.... Should I download something else or is Opera interfering with the set-up process?
By the way... how can I set IE Mobile as my default browser?
HELP!
You have to configure it via the Windows Live application.

It's not hard.
Start -> Programs -> Windows Live
You enter your hotmail username and password etc, set a bunch of options to your liking and then your hotmail account will be sync'd on your device.

If you don't like the TouchFlo 3D today plugin, you can uncheck it and replace it with whatever you want. Go to Settings->Today->Items and untick TouchFLO 3D.

Yes I know.. thanks.... To be honest I have spent the weekend playing with the phone and I am getting used to the TouchFLO 3D now, even if I still have a few problems with it....
- screen not always sensitive to finger touch, particularly in Opera I find it that very often my double-tap is ignored, and also difficult to use finger on corners of the screen....
- the TouchFLO user guide mentions that you can shrink the clock to make more room for appointments... well I know how to make the clock smaller but it still shows only the next appointment...

Blackberry type task and memos for 2.2 ???

I am long time BlackBerry user and have switched over to an Andriod device, but I am really missing my blackberry tasks and memos. I have searched through and tried many different apps, but cannot seem to find android apps that work like the blackberry ones which I am used to. Specifically, I need to be able to set tasks with alarms/reminders like blackberry has. I just don't know!! Can anybody help? Thanks in advance.
I use VCOrganize to sync my notes and tasks with Exchange..
Hi. thanks for the response. Where can I find VCOrganize? I tried Googling it, but found no links.
Are there any other sugggestions from the group? Thanks
The full name is VCOrganizer. It's in the market. If you don't have market access let me know and I'll track down their website.
I'm also a long time Blackberry guy and until I got my DroidX my primary phone was a BB Curve. I loved the memos app--it wasn't exactly the cutting edge of technology but I sure used it alot. I now use Evernote in much the same way.

try Jorte

I have never used VCOrganiser, but I use Jorte which will allow you to create and manage tasks and memos with reminders and alarms. It is mainly a calendar, but has other Pim functionality built-in. I love the different widgets for putting your schedules on the home screen.

Serious calendar app

I synchronize my calendar through Activesync. I have been trying to modify some appointments (Change the time or just move them from one day to another). It seems the only option I have is to delete the appointment
Needless to say that it is not acceptable for a professional phone / tablet...
Am I doing it wrong, or if not is there a real Calendar app available somewhere ? (I guess Touchdown one works but I don't really like the look of Touchdown and was wodnering if there is anything else)
Have you looked at Pocket Informant?
It's in beta right now and available in the market...
Agree, i cant find a calender that suits me either...
Jorte (market app) is pretty nice. I like the widgets, too. It can definitely edit events, but then I though that should work with every calendar. Never used activesync, though.
PS: only minor downside is the sometimes rough English (clearly not native speaker), but it did get a lot better with updates.

Good idea thanks. I was using it on WM before Microsoft improved theirs
Honestly with Android I feel the same as I did when i started with WM and before MSFT improved it: too many extra apps to install to ahve a decent system...
I'm using PI. I like better than stock.
It has tasks integrated plus I had to get away from the wood theme

I don't believe that PI has any direct interaction w/ Exchange but rather it mirrors the native android calendar for the sync'd data and offers a better UI to manage the data.
I guess Touchdown solves both the calendar and the contact apps...
However it's ugly too...

I have used Pocket Informant from Webis for years on my pocket pc, then switched to there App for the Itouch and now I am running it on my Tab. It works great and is currently in beta for free it is worth a look.

Have you tried Business Calendar. It's still in beta, but very pretty. Has a nice widget that shows you your next 3 appointments, and then month/week/day view for all your calendars combined.
