First Android-phone got released to day, and WM7 is postponed to second half of 2009!
On the other hand wm devices are selling better than ever! Wm market share is growing fast and now when symbian uiq is officialy dead thousands and thousands are gonna switch to wm.
I see it in forums all over the web. Also lots of SE fans are waiting for xperia x1.
The future of windows mobile looks brighter than ever.
soon there will be dual booting between the 2

I want to see that soon!
Meh, I can't wait for the Touch HD! LOL
I want to try out android. I wonder if it has theaming?
I want the Touch HD as well! I'm going to take a guess that HTC is developing their touchflo stuff, or something similar, for Android. The platform is a perfect candidate for it. It's so customizable.
People People People, This isn't a Sad day for Windows Mobile.
Its a great day for Windows Mobile Users.
Competition drives innovation and development.
Microsoft now has to work harder to impress us. Can only lead to more impressive software.
McGee is right! (I think I have something on my nose!!)
Completely agree with the above statement. I just hope that Windows Mobile Team steps it up a few notches. I eagerly await what the future holds for us WM users in the face of the iPhone phenomenon and the dropping of Symbian and Blackberry users.
For those who want Android running on their HTC devices, check out the htcandroid forums, here Im pretty sure we will soon see full versions of Android running!

In February 2008, during Mobile World Congress 2008 (a global event for professionals, not consumers), Microsoft will unveil publicly Windows Mobile 6.1 that is a minor upgrade to current Windows Mobile 6.
However the really big deal will be Windows Mobile 7. The first phones with Windows Mobile 7 will go on sale in 2009 but already now you can learn (almost) everything about it (including hint that it will support multi-touch!)

Multi-touch is just a name. The technology has been around a long time, and MS even has an implementation in Microsoft Surface.

I heard rumours(read some article on the net) about multitouch technology that it was a company in Finland who first came up with it, but after 6 months it just was developing "dead spots" on the screen, so they dropped the project. And now Apple "bought" it from them... I say once again Rumours.?
Thats it. Im keeping my WM5 device until further notice. I can survive off extracted WM6 apps until then....

How nice of the blog to spill Microsoft's new and secret ideas for all the competitors out there
Anyone want to bet that NONE of our devices will support it? I mean, if our devices supported it, we wouldn't have to go out and buy all new ones, and MS wouldn't make any money off the licensing fees from OEMs like HTC. No, making Windows Mobile 7 backwards compatible with phones like the Tilt would just make too much sense and be far too consumer friendly.

Now.. to be realistic, out of all the phones that are being sold with windows mobile how many do you think end up reflashed? I am willing to bet that it is quite a small percentage in the end. Most people don't want to get down and dirty with their phones, especially when they've already paid £400-£500 for it.

WM is one of the few platforms where they would even consider giving updates. Even Symbian and Palm don't. Even on a computer they don't give Vista because we have XP.
As long as it runs compatible hardware, I wouldn't be surprised if develops here find a way to get it working. There's also always test builds on older devices. And it's still a long time before this is going to be released. It doesn't exactly make sense to purposely produce versions for hardware that could be old.
In short, we'll just have to see. There's no point making that speculation.
From the look of it (especially the fonts that have too much quality), the images are just mockups.
And given the Vista example, I bet it will look a lot worse when shipped than what we are seeing in these concepts.
Still, it's nice to see them and them evaluate how much work it takes to implement something that takes just a few days to design in Photoshop.
Can the Betas be far behind ?
Yeah, let's bring the battle to the fruitsuckers!
Some of the stuff looks similar to Pointui.
According to it seems, certain to char them with some sponsors of Microsoft like HTC or NVIDIA are developing that is not expected any greater update of the Windows Mobile system until the Movable World-wide Congress of next year...

Well it's been delayed so many times...who knows
I've read today that it would be available for hd2 in November 2010
Yeah, I read that and as you say who knows
Anyway, here´s the info I got today, let´s see what really happens...
Cheers galaxys
My thoughts to this are that Microsoft knows that this is there last chance so if everything isn't up to speed, they will keep delaying. However this strategy will eventually back fire as avid WM fans are becoming impatience.
Absolutely disgraceful if true. There's no reason why a massive company like Microsoft should not be able to put out a high quality mobile OS platform by 2010 considering all the time they have had and the reported size of the development team.
Yeah this is getting crazy. Hurry up MWC...

Yeah, I feel you. I've been running Android on my Rhodium for a few weeks, and although it's a pretty early port and many features don't work properly yet, I still prefer it to Windows Mobile's slow release schedule and sub-par performance. I used to be a die-hard WM fan, but M$ has really let their users down, and let their phone empire collapse around them. I'll highly consider buying an Android handset when my contract expires ~2 years
interesting article about WM 7....
http://www.cio.com/article/516563/W...ent_the_Mobile_Market_?page=1&taxonomyId=3061
So I'm contemplating a new smartphone and I like many of the things about the TouchPro 2. But my biggest fear is that WM 6.5 is on the door step of being obsolete. With the announcement of Windows Phone 7, apps and updates for 6.5 still going to be out there? I expect that I'll use my phone for the next 2 years or so... I'd hate to keep seeing new and exciting stuff come around for the iPhone, Android, and WP7, with nothing new for the 6.5.
Am I right to be worried?
Your concern is fair. I have a TP2 and a HD2. The good news is there is a large number of software options out there for 6.5. Microsoft says that 6.5 is not being replaced by 7 but that does not mean developers are going to continue to create applications.
WM 6.5 is still supported for next 2-3 years so if you're going to buy a new phone in 2 years you are still fine with WM in my opinion. I just bought my wife a Touch2 few days ago.
For the record the new sdkcerts from Microsoft (with were expired in Dez 09 and re-newed in Jan 10) are valid until 2015. So I guess after 2015 development for WM is no longer possible.
I agree with your concern. I've used WM since 5.0 and have carried most applications from one OS to the next, some with upgrades from the developer. I hate to think that when I do finally have to move to android or WM7 or whatever is out there then that I will have to reinvest in what has become for me a new basic set of apps.

Is this really true? Is it impossible to renew the certificates, or develop applications after they have expired? Is the phone unusable after 2015? I am playing with the same thought to buy a Windows Mobile 6.5 device in near future, but if the phone locks after the certs expire, I have to think about better buying a Android Smartphone?! I don't really think that I will use my phone the next 4 years, but maybe if there are no good phones in future...
I think Windows Mobile is one of the most versatile OS on the market, because it is possible to run Android parallel from SD card. Only iOS is possible to do nearly the same. The next advantage is the huge know-how for such an old and durable system. Currently I'm using a XPERIA X1 and I never had the feeling that this OS (WM 6.1) is outdated. It is still timeless and functional. The usability is debatable, because you have a huge range of customization, user interfaces and a lot of free applications... The best thing is, that you can manage lot of things by modyfing the registry. With some tweaks I got my X1 to a very good performance. I would like to use it as second/spare phone in future
Hopefully anyone can answer my questions...
Best Regards
zyclop
P.S.: I don't want to buy an iPhone or a Windows 7 Phone, because WP7 has too many things missing and I would like to wait for a few updates and improvements first (maybe one or two years). iOS has too many restrictions for my requirement and iPhones are still too expensive.
Sadly enough, Windows Mobile is now a dead platform. No support from the new WP7 Marketplace thus no developers on board.
Plus no Angry Birds makes this platform virtually gone now.

Except that there are shed loads of other places to get apps from.
Compared with other app sites, MS Marketplace hardly has any apps for WM6.
The truth of the matter is that the phones won't suddenly stop working, WM has been renamed Windows Mobile Classic, there are plenty of sites providing apps for it, and no one knows how long this will continue.
But no new devices
Maybe someone can confirm this, but I suspect that Microsoft is no longer selling licenses to WM 6.5.x, or any version except WM7. So it is impossible for manufacturers to build any more WM 6.x devices - they can't get the OS license.

It's not yet good enough.
Over the last few years it has become quite fashionable for people (especially alot of tech websites) to bash windows mobile even if they have very little experiance with it, more so since the iphone came on the scene. yet most people who play with my device (HD2 running NRG rom and maxsense) have very positive feedback. So although winmo is capable it seems it not very marketable
Thus no matter how good some of the projects at XDA have turned out winmo is on the way out, and android is on the way in.
But i dont feel im done with winmo yet, i have mustered alot of software since my 1st winmo device (HTC e200) and invested alot of time learning its intricacies, i dont yet feel ready to make the jump to a different OS when there still seems to be so much going on in the winmo world, but at the same time im eager for some new hardware.
But soon my contract will be up for renewal and there seems to be no more highend winmo devices insight, is the HD2 the last highend winmo device?
There is alot of hype surrounding the windows phone 7 but for me this seems too much like jumping on the Iphone bandwagon and the complete opposite of what i want from a device. Sure i like an easy to use interface, but comprimising functionality for it is too high a price.
.........

I guess I'm going for android or ubuntu. I'll probably start using ubuntu on my nexus but I may switch back to android. Hopefully we see easy porting of android apps.
Well they say that a mobile is has 10 years in it, and android may be the first to break that unless apple hire the next Steve jobs. Android has a decent push to keep momentum though I think that it will once again retract to being "the geek phone" is, which I Dont mind... I don't like android becoming so popular because future models will be dumbed down for the masses rather than suped up for us...
I think Ubuntu has a nice idea on paper and some eye candy but I think it isn't practicle in as application to be as widely accepted as iOS for the mainstream or as open and moddable (although it should be really, as its from Linux) to attract us nerds or devs beyond the initial "wow its Ubuntu on a phone" factor. It also relies on webapps rather than more mature os tactics of moving away from web apps, can't blame them though as they want lots if apps asap to compete.
RIM should change their name to RIP
I don't know enough about tizen or Firefox to comment but I think Firefox os is DOA tbh.
That leaves the mighty windows phone, building up a catalogue of Apps and mind share, original and beautiful design reflecting windows 8 and Xbox, as fluid and intuitive as iOS with more functionality, slowly becoming more and more open, Nokia are driving it... I believe that wp can do it! I think that by wp9 there will be a lot more openness to the is for devs but not as much as android, but enough to feel free, it will catch on to people moving away from ios or people with Windows 8 tablets and ultra books and it will be a big thing. I love android to death but I believe wp8 will be the big thing of the future.
I think a route android may go is like Linux, different builds rather than just different skins, android touch wiz os could be potentially a different os to motoblur android for example... That could be a goood or a bad thing if it does.

Windows phone is ok, but Microsoft has always been so restrictive, I cant see it taking off and storming the market. Android, because its open for the world to develop, hone and improve. Microsoft cant keep up, they are too interested in money and not what the consumer wants. Heck just look at how fast android has evolved. Compare that to the backwards step taken by Microsoft with the introduction of Vista, a few years back.

Was vista really a backwards step or were people (me included) complaining that a brand new GPU/ram-heavy OS was running slow and buggy on our 7 year old computers?
Both Android and windows (inc windows phone) have made huge advances in the last 2 or 3 years, and I've seriously considered sueing apple for false advertising with "most advanced operating system" lol not that its a bad system but no software of apple is particularly advanced... But I wouldn't win because 'advanced' us not quantitative enough and only really subjective (though on the back of that they should not be allowed to claim that, either)

I think BB10 OS will have a chance in the future
till now android is best, windows 8 is catching up lately, then we have ubuntu and mozilla os coming up head..its so exciting, and then recently bb10 is launched which got good reviews.
