Sync options if you don't own Outlook? - General Topics

Is there a way to sync contacts, calendar, favorites, etc- if you don't own Outlook on your desktop pc?
I use Open Office, and didn't fork out the cash for Outlook. I think I have some older versions from previous devices (back when devices shipped with a license for Outlook) but I don't want to try to find the disks (I would need 4 licenses for me, the wife, and kids).
I am hoping there is some free solution, but if not I guess I am looking for the cheapest solution.
By the way, this is on Windows Mobile 6.1 (Kaiser).

I have the same question for the same phone. Only I am still using WM 6.0. In my case, it's not because I don't own Outlook. Rather, I don't like Outlook. And optimally, I would like a solution that works well on Ubuntu.
On my previous phone (Motorola v710) I used BitPIM for synchronization. From BitPIM I could export/import to exchange data with Outlook. But, I do not think a Windows Mobile connector is likely to be written for BitPIM.
Cheers,
Aaron

Alternative to outlook.

Hello.
Is there an alternative around for outlook? both desktop and/or pda? that allows sync? (calendar, contacts and email, notes, etc...) i really hate outllook. its slow and lags alot....
if anyone have any ideas?
all the best

If you only want to sync your desktop, take a look at, say, IntelliSync or, to a lesser degree, mNotes.
If with an Exchange server, you can do it too.
But is there any way to use for instance thunderbird?
FinchSync allows you to syncronize Pocket Outlook with Thunderbird. It is said to syncronize contacts, appointments and tasks between Windows Mobile and Thunderbird/Sunbird.
I haven't tested it yet.

Forgot to mention:
http://synchingthunder.sourceforge.net/
It allows one to synchronize Thunderbird installation between different computers. Not exactly what you are looking for, but it may have its uses.
(I failed to get it to work on my system though)
Jörg
Thank you.
Hi there!
First, thank you all for all your kick awnsers!!
I found another program, payware, that lets you sync pocket pc and thunderbird. its called birdie sync http://www.birdiesync.com/home.html shame it doesnt let you, for now they say, sync email...
talking about e-mail... this is exactly what i cant find!! some sort of way to sync pocket pc and thunderbird email.....any ideas?
Another idiea would be putting thunderbird to sych with an outlook.pst file and the user regular active sync...
All the best,
Joao Oliveira.
.
I'm not sure if there already are applications that synchronize the emails (haven't came across any), but it will probabely come...
I also haven't found software to synchronize an Outlook (on the PC) with a ThunderBird.
Jörg
I would love to sync my contacts and appointments with GMail, is there anyway possible. I found Goosync for appointments, but nothing for the contacts file (which is what i REALLY want).
Any ideas?
Birdiesync.
Hello All!
Looks like birdiesync is now supporting e-mail sync.
So you can now actually sync windows mobile 5 with Thunderbird. It supports besides mail, calendar (using sunbird/lightning beta) calendar and tasks.
I'm still testing it.. they have a fully functional trial version that works for 30 days. if you like it you can buy it for 24,95dolars.
all the best,
Joao.

Windows Live contacts not synchronizing with Outlook (but I would like them to!)

I apologise if this is a FAQ - I've searched but only found a single reference to a similar problem. It was in the Trinity forum here and the fix listed didn't help me.
I recently upgraded my Hermes to WM6 with Windows Live version 10.6.0028.1100. I have the synchronize options set to sync email and contacts, merging duplicate contacts.
When I synchronized with Windows Live, it downloaded the email and put the contacts on the phone, but the Live contacts won't synchronize over to Outlook. I would like them to, if possible (unlike most people it seems, from the search results I got) - they did in the previous version of Windows Live that I was using with WM5.
I also tried creating a "Windows Live" contact on the phone itself, and that did not synchronize with Outlook either. Regular contacts do.
Is this a known issue? If anyone is better with the search than I am, I'd be grateful for any assistance.
Edit: I just deleted the Activesync pairing and re-paired, then resynchronized with Windows Live. It deleted all but 5 of my contacts from my Messenger list (the 5 that were new since I updated to the new version of Messenger and that weren't in Outlook) - OUCH!
I just downgraded to 10.6.0026.1400, which I heard could be more stable.
I still have the same issues though - many Live contacts in my phone not synchronising to Outlook on the desktop.
Any ideas?
Have you considered trying Microsoft Outlook Connector on your desktop? This will allow outlook to sync directly with windows live. I have been also looking into ways to sync outlook connector on my desktop with an exchange server so i have true direct-push e-mail along with contact and calendar syncing from windows live. If this appeals to you, let me know and we can start a thread for that!
Best,
MJB
Interesting, thanks for the information, I wasn't aware of Outlook Connector. I might give the latest beta a go if there's no longer a way to synchronise them directly from the phone.
So is the issue with Live contacts not automatically synchronising to Outlook on the desktop expected, then? If so, it must have changed from the earlier pre-WM6 betas.
to the best of my knowledge u need a paid hotmail account for outlook connector
You don't need a paid account for mail and contacts, only for the rest (such as calendar).
Although Outlook (at least 2002 and 2007) lets you synchronize live mail anyway, so that's not much of a bonus.

Contact manager a la Outlook

Everywhere I see I keep finding references to Outlook when I want to edit contacts through my computer instead of through my PPC (it's a seriously painful job at times... ><).
I have no interest in buying the entire damned Outlook/Office suite for this little thing, and OpenOffice covers everything I need otherwise. Does this exist?
Outlook is an awesome app period. I got '07 version (only one on shelves) for about $70. Not to mention it will also be your main point for calender, tasks, notes, contacts, and if you want mail (kind of pointless if you have the unlimited data plan) Or just find a contact manager app for your PPC that you like, you don't have to purchase the entire office suite.
I'm still not keen on getting Outlook. Costly, unnecessary since I have everything I need in other programs or services. All I need is a way to manage contacts like I can do in Outlook (through Activesync), and that's what I'm looking for, but can't find.
Does it exist?
may try jeyo mobile companion.
its a desktop tool to work with your PPC for SMS and contacts.
Im using Mozilla Thunderbird and Birdiesync, if you install the Lightning-Addon for Thunderbird you can even sync your Calendar.

Now this looks interesting. Thanks to both of you for great suggestions!
If there's a free something out there that'd be even better

Pc suite for htc hd2! Please

Dear all, either I am used to older models of phones (Nokia and Samsung, for instance) using PC suite for operating the phones, or I am not sufficiently skilled to find in XDA any information on a HTC HD2 PC SUITE. I have used XTNCONNECT, but after reanstallation of MS OFFICE AND MS OUTLOOK, it cannot be configured. My problem is that I want to avoid Windows Mobile Center. It synchronizes default contacts, calendars, etc. from MS Outlook. I need a PC suite to synchronize groups of contacts, various calendars, etc.
I am ready to donate if someone solves this problem of mine.
Thanks in advance
Have a look at Microsoft My Phone as it should sync using the web, will allow you to stay away from outlook if thats your thing.
http://sn1-p1.myphone.microsoft.com/mkweb/Start.po
+1 for Microsoft My Phone. It's great to back-up without using your PC at all. Plus, it will back-up your SMS messages, photos and more. I only sync with the computer now to use MyMobiler.
Give google a try.
Every Gmail account support exchange, just google "google sync" to see how to config.
Compared with Microsoft Myphone, no phone, notes or message sync, but will give you Pushmail function(mail arrive at your phone as soon as you recieve it).
Just google pandaapp.

[Q] Get contacts/txts/etc onto HD7 from the MyPhone service?

Microsoft wouldn't have forgotten this? Right...? :-(
I've traded up from my HD2 to an HD7. One of the features I loved on the old phone was sync'ing all my stuff up to the myphone.microsoft.com service. So I can keep old content, will always have my contacts and so forth.
But as much as I look around the HD7, I can't find any way to sync it to get my stuff on the new phone. I can't download the myphone software as WP7 doesn't recognise Cab files and the new windowsphone.live.com doesn't have any back up features just overview of the services on your phone like Xbo and Facebook account.
Seriously, Microsoft wouldn't have gotten their long standing WinMo customers reliant on their amazing back-up service and then just cast us out into the unbacked up snow would they?
Any help is much appreciated!!!

*I promise I did try to do some searching before posting, but any search term with 'my' and 'phone' in doesn't return any helpful results
Your contacts will sync from your Windows Live Account (Ie your Hotmail Contacts).
I assume you can export from MyPhone to Hotmail?
I did think of that but it doesn't seem to be working. The account overview screen says Windows Live covers hotmail, xbox, photos and contacts but there's no option to tick contacts in the setup screen just email.
I also use an Exchange server but there's no contacts on there as my HD2 would only let you sync contacts from one or the other and I chose myphone.
Anythign else I can try - even if it's a way to export contacts and text messages from the HD2 and manually drop them into the HD7?

Here's what I did.
1. Backed up all my contacts with DotFred's PIM Backup just in case.
2. Disconnected syncing with MyPhone.
3. New local sync connection with Outlook.
4. Synced Outlook with Windows Live using the Windows Live Connector for Outlook.
5. Synced contacts on my WP7 from Live.
Sure, it's reaching around your elbow to scratch your ass but it only took me about 5 minutes tops.
I don't have WP7 yet, but on the MyPhone website, you can set certain data to restore to the phone on the next sync.
MyPhone is a Windows Mobile 6.5 service, it has nothing to do with WP7.
WP7 puts everything in the cloud so you don't need to back up the phone.
Use the Outlook connector for hotmail to sync from Outlook to Hotmail, then connect your WP7 phone to hotmail and all will be well. Emails, contacts and calendar will sync up to your phone.
I was hoping Myphone communicated with windowsphone.live.com, but that wasn't the case. I had to pirate Outlook 2007, since Outlook 2010 was unable to sync via WMDC on W7 64 bit.
I then exported my contacts to a .csv from Outlook 2007 and imported to my new live-account that I was going to use with my WP7 device.
My phone would then sync the contacts when logged in to my live-account.
someone else posted this before so they get the credit:
www.soocial.com
Create an acct with any email address. Follow the instructions to download the cab to your phone and install. Sync your contacts to soocial. Cancel that sync relationship and sync to your windows live acct.
You can sync 250 contacts this way without paying for it.

I was able to sync my Tilt2 with Outlook 2010 via WMDC and I'm using Windows 7 as well.
The issue is with 64 bit.
Windows 7 64 bit + Office 2010 64 bit or W7 64 bit + Office 2010 32 bit. I'm not sure if 32 bit Outlook would work, but I decided to go for Outlook 2007 to be sure.

Yea, I meant to notate that I'm using Windows 7 x64 as well.
I'm using win7 32 bit, so sholdnt be an issue.
Obviously I can manually put in my contacts, but I'd still be missing text messages so it's not quite ideal.
Am I just being a whinger who's hoping for a magic pixie? it's okay to say if I am!

You don't need to use myphone or outlook. All you need is your winmo 6.5 device and windows live.
http://windowsphone7central.com/news/guide_how_to_easily_transfer_your_windows_mobile_contacts_to_your_windows_phone_7_device-11-09-10.php
Those are the instructions I used. My tilt2 sent everything up into the cloud to my live account, which then automagically dropped right back down onto my Focus. This copied over my contacts (including their pictures) and my calendar.
No software required. Didn't even have a sim in the tilt2. Sent it up to the cloud over wifi. Gotta love it.
Microsoft has another device portal that it will use for WP7. It will be similar to MyPhone. MyPhone isn't supported on WP7.

And that device portal will be available when or where? It's really a pain that you can't backup your text messages. I want to throw out my HD7 (this device just sucks big time with so many device specific problems) and exchange it for an Omnia 7, but I really want to backup my texts before so I can restore them... I haven't found any way yet to do so my e-mail and contacts are synced with Exchange and I can backup the music and pictures with Zune... but my texts...
