Windows Live contacts not synchronizing with Outlook (but I would like them to!)

I apologise if this is a FAQ - I've searched but only found a single reference to a similar problem. It was in the Trinity forum here and the fix listed didn't help me.
I recently upgraded my Hermes to WM6 with Windows Live version 10.6.0028.1100. I have the synchronize options set to sync email and contacts, merging duplicate contacts.
When I synchronized with Windows Live, it downloaded the email and put the contacts on the phone, but the Live contacts won't synchronize over to Outlook. I would like them to, if possible (unlike most people it seems, from the search results I got) - they did in the previous version of Windows Live that I was using with WM5.
I also tried creating a "Windows Live" contact on the phone itself, and that did not synchronize with Outlook either. Regular contacts do.
Is this a known issue? If anyone is better with the search than I am, I'd be grateful for any assistance.
Edit: I just deleted the Activesync pairing and re-paired, then resynchronized with Windows Live. It deleted all but 5 of my contacts from my Messenger list (the 5 that were new since I updated to the new version of Messenger and that weren't in Outlook) - OUCH!

I just downgraded to 10.6.0026.1400, which I heard could be more stable.
I still have the same issues though - many Live contacts in my phone not synchronising to Outlook on the desktop.
Any ideas?

Have you considered trying Microsoft Outlook Connector on your desktop? This will allow outlook to sync directly with windows live. I have been also looking into ways to sync outlook connector on my desktop with an exchange server so i have true direct-push e-mail along with contact and calendar syncing from windows live. If this appeals to you, let me know and we can start a thread for that!

Interesting, thanks for the information, I wasn't aware of Outlook Connector. I might give the latest beta a go if there's no longer a way to synchronise them directly from the phone.
So is the issue with Live contacts not automatically synchronising to Outlook on the desktop expected, then? If so, it must have changed from the earlier pre-WM6 betas.

You don't need a paid account for mail and contacts, only for the rest (such as calendar).
Although Outlook (at least 2002 and 2007) lets you synchronize live mail anyway, so that's not much of a bonus.

SOLVED. How to sync contacts from your Nokia phone to your HTC Windows Mobile phone?

I had a Nokia 6620 and I synced all the contacts with my laptop running Vista through Nokia PC Suite. I have a folder named "Contacts" in Vista now, which is also linked to the Windows Live Mail. Windows Live Mail is supposed to be the updated version of Outlook Express. When I opened Windows Mobile Device Center to sync all the contacts and calendar items to my HTC Fuze, the options to sync my contacts and calendar are disabled. Am I doing something wrong here? How do I sync all the data, which was stored on my Vista system by Nokia PC Suite, with my HTC Fuze, without opening a Windows account? Is there any other application I can use for this, other than Windows Mobile Device Center?

I am really stuck with all my contacts in Windows "Contacts" folder and not being able to sync them with my HTC Fuze. I would really appreciate if someone can point me in the right direction or help me out. Thanks.

Now I could be way off here so apologies if that is the case. I think WMDC only deals with Outlook (not Outlook Express). If that is the case then try importing your contacts into Outlook and then re-setting up your sync settings. That might help.
Another thing to consider is to go into Activesync on your device and then options. Look at what it thinks it is syncing. If contacts are already set to sync with something, then uncheck this and run the WMDC connections wizard again. You may find that this time you can select the contacts folder this time.
As I said, I could be way off as I am not a computer guru by any stretch of the imagination. All the best.

Sorry, 1 more thought. You may want to try and uninstal Nokia PC suite-it could be that WMDC sees the contacts being synced with Nokia PC suite and thus wont allow it to sync with your HTC. If you do unistall just remember to back up your contacts etc otherwise you could end up loosing them all. Not good me thinks!

Nokia Suite maintains its own database which is independent of Outlook's. Both can reside on the PC without conflict, however, the OP needs to have the data (Contatcs/Tasks/Notes/Cal, etc) in Outlook to sync to WM devices.

Easiest way to deal with this is:
Export out of the PC Suite to csv format (comma separated)
Import into Outlook
Sync with addressbook in outlook (combine records)
Sync with phone using active sync

Thank you everyone for your responses, but I have been struggling with another major issue here now. As I mentioned in my earlier post, I was not able to select contacts and other data in Windows MObile Device Center, so I unstalled WMDC as well as the device driver update. I restarted my system and when I installed both the WMDC driver update and WMDC istself, my system doesn't recognize my Fuze anymore. Not only that, I don't have many options in WMDC now, and, the WMDC window doesn't open most of the times. I have tried uninstalling both of them again, installing their versions from Microsoft's Web site, but to no avail. So now, I have the following problems:
1. I don't have functioning WMDC
2. When I connect my Fuze, it is not recognized, although the system makes a sound that there is something connected on the USB port
3. Vista has Windows Mail, not Outlook or Outlook Express
In response to suggestions about Activesync, I just learned that Activesync is installable only on XP, not Vista. I have been struggling with these issues since today morning. This shouldn't be this difficult, after all.
I will try connecting my Nokia 6620 to my system and try to export the contacts to csv format. When I opened Nokia PC Suite without connecting my Nokia phone, the contacts list showed empty on the Suite, maybe because it doesn't store them on the system, and pulls them out only from the phone? I will find that out too.
If someone can, please let me know how to unistall WMDC properly and reinstall it so that it functions the way it did the first time. Are there any other free software to accomplish this? All the help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Thanks, that somehow helped, I am not sure how, but it did. When I cheched that option off, it again recognized my Fuze as a new device and installed the driver and WMDC, which works fine now, but still doesn't allow me to select contacts, calendar items, etc.

That method imported all data, with all contacts named "Unknown" and missing the details (phone numbers, address, etc.) of most of the contacts. So, I installed Outlook 2007 and tried to import the csv file in Outlook, but it gave me an error saying its translator was not able to read the csv file (the clipping of the error is attached). I have the following questions now:
1. How do I overcome the importing error
2. How do I sync contacts from Nokia phone directly into Outlook instead of Windows Mail, so that I can have the contacts in Outlook and then, I can just sync Outlook and Fuze.
3. Or, is there a way to have the contacts synced between Windows Mail and Outlook?

Haven't had a Nokia for some time but AFAIK the latest PhoneSuite allows you a full sync with outlook.
CSV can be tricky because it may fail at custom fields. Check the CSV file using Excel if you have all headers.
Worst case - take a deep breath and read what google has to say ...

OP, do you have OL installed? Otherwise, get OL and setup your Nokia PC Suite to sync with OL, then you can bring your contact & calendar from the Nokia into OL, then sync to your WM device thereafter. If you are not going to have OL soon, then dump your Nokia contacts onto the SIM and drop the SIM into the WM, but you still need to find a way to "scrub" the data.

Almost the same reply but putting the contacts on the SIM usually truncates add info like long names and multi phone entries. Through outlook would be the best and easiest way IMO.

Agreed, hence the "scrub" I threw that in b/c it appears the OP doesn't have OL readily available.

PHEW , finally!! It took me the whole day to just figure this out, and now I am thinking why I didn't think about this earlier. But I know why, probably because I didn't want to install Outlook just for the purpose of syncing. Anyway, tyguy, you were right that there should be/was a provision in Nokia PC Suite to sync that contacts with Outlook. I had checked all the settings, but I was checking the settings with Windows Mail chosen, I could find that I could choose Outlook only when I decided to create new settings. I synced Nokia phone to Outlook and then Outlook to my Fuze. Almost all the contacts and calendar items are as they are on my Nokia phone, so I am extremely happy. Some of the contacts, very few, are missing the phone numbers, but I can do that manually for that less a number of contacts. Thank you everyone for helping me out. I really appreciate it.

I remember I had to do a lot of work to solve this, and now I want my E90 back, cause all issues of this bad phone. It is not "safe": does not always ring the alarm, appointments gestion is very very bad, contacts sucks.
I have now the trial version of outlook, now it is over on 31/01 and I have no idea hot to do. I can' t syncronize anymore cause I will not pay for Outlook.
The reality is: wm sucks, i' m waiting for android.
PS: I saved contacts then copied one by one in outlook.

And well, WM contacts only support 1 mobile number. Lots of contacts i have to register twice! It sucks!

Microsoft My Phone Question

Question for those who use Microsoft My Phone.
I currently use My Phone to sync Contacts and Text Messages on my WM 6.5 phone. When I get my WP7 device will I be able to sync those Contacts and Text Messages over? Or will I need to import contacts from my SIM card?

No - Apparently MyPhone is not supported in WP7 and can't be accessed by the phone. They want everything to be done via Windows Live or Exchange
I use MyPhone too for my 6.5 more as just online backup but it's nice to have txts etc saved out, plus I use SPB backup too for which at the moment there is no WP7 alternative.

sync phone with an exchange server if one has access to it otherwise install outlook with hotmail connector, sync contacts and calender from phone into hotmail on outlook which will sync the same info with hotmail on the web...
connect wp7 with hotmail via EOAS or pop and that will sync the contacts and calenders...

one has to **** around with so many steps!!!!
And this is user friendly??!! This is so freaking complicated.

that was an alternative. like I said earlier, kin studio like features which store contacts, text messages etc on the cloud will be added later to devices.live.com website.
not everyone stores their contacts and text messages on myphone.
ps - you can always import your contacts to your sim card and then export it to wp7's internal memory too...

I'm using MyPhone too as I don't have an exchange account, it's a shame that feature isn't available on day one but hopefully it will come with the January update.

I'm talking about transferring data from one MS device to another,
and it's simply screwed, opposed to the solution which was just available.
And don't be silly.
You know that transferring 1500 contacts with multiple data is impossible to transfer
through SIM.

In the same boat fella. I have a possible solution to this problem but to be honest it's not something that many people will be able to do. Plus I haven't implemented it yet and won't get a chance till next week now.
For the moment, what I have done is use the Outlook connector and got the contacts and calender into my live account. I've lost some data (some pretty important) and it doesn't sync categories which I make extensive use of, but it's there for the moment. It will do for a short time when I get my phone from Wed.
Sorry but that is all I can suggest for the moment. IMO they screwed this up royally

I have an exchange account, but I purposely don't sync my personal contacts with my business contacts. This sucks because MyPhone is in the "cloud" and is a M$ product, but it doesn't work with their newest phone? What crap.

So for you who plan to move to WP7 (I'll stick with 6.5.x personally) there may be hope .

You are all making assumptions based on mis-reported facts. Windows Phone 7 does have "My Phone," however it is now integrated into the OS. You can easily transfer your contacts, calendar, and e-mail by connecting your old Windows Mobile device to sync with Gmail or Hotmail, then connect your new Windows Phone 7 device to sync and it will download everything from one of those services. After that, you're free to disconnect Windows Phone 7 from the service if you don't want it anymore and your contacts and calendar will stay. (For obvious reasons, e-mail requires maintaining an account with somebody.)
As far as text messages, there is no migration path from 6.x to 7, as is the same when upgrading iPhone devices or just about any other platform. However, I think you will all find that Microsoft's implementation of MyPhone on Windows Phone 7 is still better than MobileMe. Not only is it free, but its feature-set (like integrating SkyDrive photos with the locally-stored photos together into the Pictures hub) is much better than the separate app silos Apple has created. Windows Phone 7 isn't perfect, but IMO it's a pretty good version 1 product considering that they've started over from scratch and the competition has had a 2-3 year head start.

Hey, wake up.
So WP7 HAS NO MYPHONE.
MyPhone was just launched year ago to TO HELP EASILY BACKUP AND RESTORE
in the cloud all of the data you need. So I could switch my device every week and still have all I need with me with one ****ing click. It was meant to be this way.
And now MS launches new platform and instead of enjoying great solutions,
opposite to all advertised easyness and "it just works"
you have to sync everything through the crappy few steps process!!!!
Plus all the smses are gone, all tasks and notes are gone!!!
That's a DUMBASS implementation. Stupid and completely brainless.
So WP7 looks like a lie?
With this attitude I hope they will not succeed.
Or wake up soon.

It is not the same "my phone" as we are talking about here. I won't be able to transfer my text messages from the my phone service. I have no issues with transferring contacts, etc as that is easy.

righto.....so from my understanding exchange 2010 supports SMS's.
Is there a way to import the SMS from Microsoft my Phone?
Or is it a case of needing to get the SMS's sync'd from my 6.5 device to my Exchange and then sync them back to the WP7 device?

[Q] Syncing Outlook contacts and calendar to WP7

Hi, I'm new around here as a new WP7 user, I'm trying to get some advice. I have all of my contacts and calendar entries synced to Outlook. I have Zune software installed. I may just be missing something simple, but how do I get the phone to sync with Outlook and grab these contacts and calendar entries?

Bad news. It does not sync with Outlook (only Exchange version) with a pst file.

It is possible - just get the Outlok connector to sync Outlook to Windows Live, and then Windows Live will sync to the WP7 (over the air).

I'm shocked that it can't just sync directly with Outlook
Anyway, I did put my Windows Live ID onto the phone, but that then synced all of my MSN contacts to the phone book, which I don't want. I couldn't find a way to stop it syncing my MSN contacts, and as you cannot delete the account once entered, I had to format the phone and start over.
So it looks like I'm going to need a whole new Windows Live account just to sync my Outlook contacts and calendar. Looking at the Outlook connector it seems to be saying that it'll transfer your Live contacts and calendar to Outlook, but what I'm wanting is the other way around, my Outlook calendar and contact to transfer to Live. How do you do this?

Ok - firstly Windows Live isn't the only way to sync contacts/calendar on to your phone OTA. There is Exchange, gmail etc to do this. You might want to look at the other methods.
I for one didn't want to use Live at all and went for an hosted Exchange option till I can get my own server sorted (overkill I know). However, hosted Exchange costs about £4 pm.If you have your own domain, even sweeter.
So I still use Outlook (I'm lucky I have 2010 so can have 2 excahnge accounts on 1 profile) to keep all my work and home calendar and contacts in sync with my phone and this also translates to home desktops and laptops automatically too. This is as easy as drgging and dropping between accounts.

If I have to sync with Outlook OTA, what I really want is a solution that works the same as MobileMe, i.e., it automatically keeps all the data between the phone and Outlook in sync without the need to perform manual syncs. Is this possible?

the usual send/recieve in outlook will connect to your live account also and onto your phone why pay £4pm when this kinda thing should be included, I'm sure MS will get off their arse soon and do some updates and tweaking.

You are right MS need to sort this out but I doubt it's a priority. They consider the whole Outlook thing to be a business solution and by their very own words are a secondary concern for this OS at the moment. They want the simple masses not the business/power users. They want that massive chunk of iPhone and Android drones to come over to WP.
There is no way I want my business and personal contacts and calendar on Live. That **** gets hacked all the time. The hosted exchange solution was the safest and easiest solution for me at present. It's quick and easy to set up, secure as it's a business solution and employs security protocols way above those on Live. In addition the OTA synchronisation between the device and all other machines that use that exchange account (so those at home and my PC at work) is instantaneous, and yes a bit of a pain to do the drag and drop between the exchange accounts but it's EXACTLY the same as you will have to do if you use Live and the Outlook connector. £4pm is in my opinion not a high price to pay for to satisfy my concerns.

Desktop synching is critical to me.
I've got a small business, we don't run Exchange server but have invested serious time to standardise on Outlook/Office: contacts, tasks, notes, onenote, email client, word/excel.
Contacts and detailed contact info is our IP; Word/Excel data is client confidential. Placing this on someone else's drive in the cloud isn't an option.
From what I understand so far...
1. Phone 7: data on the cloud; doesn't sync (manual updates)
2. Android: data on the cloud; synchs email and contacts only (?)
3. Apple: data on the desktop, synchs email and contacts only
4. Symbian: ugh !
5. WM6.x: currently trying to get away from the endless problems and snail-like performance
Is this right ?
Does anyone have an alternative (other than implementing Exchange)?
(Waiting doesn’t seem an option either. I'm sceptical MS will introduce desktop synching anytime soon, or at all: social users won't care and Exchange synch takes care of corporates - hence 80% of potential market is catered for. Also, the prospect of selling cloud storage has put a light in way too many eyes. )

Windows Live uses Exchange ActiveSync. That is far superior to MobileMe. Do people still use MobileMe?
Anyways...
Exchange also uses ActiveSync.
Exchange is supported Natively in Outlook. Windows Live is supported via the Connector (Mail, Contacts, Calendar).
Everything stays in Sync.

The Outlook Connector and Hotmail ActiveSync is completely free.
Don't spread lies.

I'm not totally of-fay with Android or iPhone so can't really comment except I think that iPhones also do calendar from Outlook desktop via iTunes (and correct me if I'm wrong OTA with exchange).
Also with Android, some guys at work do use desktop sync to Outlook but I don't know what and how but they do use it.
I just came off the WinMo 6.5 bandwagon so I know what it was capable of not mater how bad.
WP7, my company won't open up the ports to allow Exchange to sync (they like SlackBerries) and with the absence desktop sync I had to implement my own methods for OTA syncing without using Live. None of this is ideal but it seems from other forums that a lot of people are complaining about this and M$ I believe are listening, though when it will be sorted is another matter.

You don't understand... No, it is not correct.

2. Android Synchs Calendars from Google Servers. Google on Android has weaker (i.e. less tight) integration than Windows Live on Windows Phone 7, though.
3. MobileMe is inferior to both the WP7/Live and Android/Google integration. It supports ActiveSync, however.
4. Symbian supports ActiveSync. Symbian may not look that great but feature for feature it can match or rival most other smartphone OSes. The UI is what has held Symbian back, not the core platform - which is great.
5. WM6.x Supports ActiveSync and there is Windows Live for Windows Mobile to Sync Winodws Live Mail and Contacts to the phone. It can also merge Live Contacts with already-existing Phone contacts and show Presence information. There is Microsoft Office 2010 Mobile for Windows Mobile 6.5. The only WinMo phone I'd bother using is an HD2 these days, but that device has its own problems (if you get a "good one", then you're good to go, though).
On WinMo 6.5 You can sync your Hotmail Contacts/Mail via Windows Live for Windows Mobile, chat with Windows Live Messenger Mobile, and get your Google Mail, Contacts, and Calendar via ActiveSync by way of Google Sync.

Yes, you can get a Blackberry and use BIS/BES.
(Waiting doesn’t seem an option either. I'm sceptical MS will introduce desktop synching anytime soon, or at all: social users won't care and Exchange synch takes care of corporates - hence 80% of potential market is catered for. Also, the prospect of selling cloud storage has put a light in way too many eyes. )

Desktop Syncing is a feature being fantastically overstated in these forums, just like stuff like a File manager. If you're a Lemming then just get an Android phone and use Google Services. If you can make your own decisions I think I've cleared up enough of your misconceptions in this reply (or at least given you the capabilities of each platform IRT what info syncs that may pretain to you specific use case).
EDIT: If you're running a business you can do yourself a favor and oursource your Exchange hosting. For example: http://www.apps4rent.com/ has 6-7GB mailboxes for something like $7.99/mo and you can get just 1 mailbox if you want, with no contract or anything. I used them for a couple of years, so I can vouch for them. You get Outlook for free with you Plan (or Entourage/Outlook for Mac) and ActiveSync is a free Add-On. You can access from web browsers using OWA, and use either a sub-domain or your own domain.

I'm very sure that you do not use Outlook on a stand alone PC with a pst file and sync every day with a Win Phone or you would understand what we are all talking about. No I qualify, sync every day with Calender, Tasks, & Contacts.[/I]

Just for those who have read this thread and are confused; I have an outlook calendar, contacts, and hotmail all synced up with my WP7 device.
Calendar - I chose to install Google Calendar Sync onto my Outlook PC. It automatically syncs my local outlook calendar with the cloud every 10 mins. Google calendar then pushes any changes to my phone instantly, no wires.
Contacts - I chose to install the hotmail connector for outlook, and dragged all my contacts out of their folder and into the hotmail account. this pushed them onto the phone automatically, no wires. Any changes to contacts are now made either on the phone directly, or in the new contacts folder created by the hotmail connector.
Hotmail - I used to use the POP3 account settings, but decided to change to using the outlook connector instead. Works a treat. Push Email is far superior to clunky old send/receive schedules.
The above may not suit everone, but it works for me and I`m very happy with the results.

Funny how people were moaning about WM6.5's lack of wireless sync with Outlook. Now that WP7 syncs wirelessly with Outlook, people are moaning that it doesn't sync over wired USB.
Some people will never be happy. *shrug*

Never even seen a Samsung omnia 7, but tonight I was asked how you would sync MS Outlook contacts and calender from windows 7 pc to the Samsung omnia 7
I couldn't answer at the time because my last windows phone was a HTC HD2 running 6.5 and syncing that with XP seemed to be a bit backward compared with my old HTC Blueangel and ActiveSync.
Can you please point me / her in the correct direction. She has a pop email account, not hotmail and apparently is finding it a little difficult to find instructions for anything other than an MS Exchange setup.
I did a search and saw a few references to wireless sync, what's the way forward please?

you have to setup the phone to synchronize with Windows Live Website and then add in outlook (2007>2010) the hotmail account as mail account.
It will download the "hotmail connector" to download all data from windows live.
you can also use windows live mail 2011 instead of outlook (free and easy to use)

MSFT have stated pretty clearly that the future is in the cloud. Actually Windows Live mail is an excellent implemenation of cloud & local e-mail integration.. If you want to use google mail or something else, then fine, (and WP7 is fine with that too) .. but I don't know why MSFT have to support possible e-mail configurations - for free. If you don't want to play it their way try nuevasync, pipe everything via their service & connect as an exchange server.
