I read in the wiki for WM5_Tweaks_Other that it is possible to tweak the registry to enable "E" icon when in EDGE networks. It goes something like this:
If your network provider supports the Edge network (and your device does as well), you can use the following to show a little 'E' icon instead of 'G' icon when connected to an Edge network:
HKLM\Drivers\BuiltIn\RIL\EnableDifferGprsEdgeIcon = 1 (DWORD decimal)
I tried this on the Treo 750. EnableDifferGprsEdgeIcon did not exist under RIL, so I added it and set the value and it did not work.
Wondering if anyone figured out how to enable the "E" icon?
Doesn't work on my HTC TyTN too. Registry entry wasn't there so probably we are missing something else too, not just that single reg key.
Hmmm
Hi,
I thing that it is relatred with the phone subsystem and each one is different. Palm has one version TyTN has another version.
It is just a guess.
Regards,
Taguapire.
I have I-Mate SP5 Smartphone and HTC TyTN PPC Phone - both are Windows Mobile 5 and registry looks very alike, both have this entry: "dll=ril.dll" or something like that in the same place where is the mentioned "Edge" registry entry, but one device has a lot more reg entries there then the other, so it's probably down to radio version/implementation.
Today I was switching band in UMTS/EDGE area. Each time I was switching band phone was logging out the network then logging in again. When I was going from UMTS to GSM I noticed [E] icon appearing for about 0,2 second (it was when I was logged to UMTS network) and then turning to [G]. I'm sure I was in EDGE area (I was in the ceter of Krakow, one of the biggest cities in Poland).
Conclusion is that Treo DOES HAVE Edge icon, but we need to find the way to use it... Any ideas?
I also looked in registry like schriss said. There is entry about dll file. I have set rilgsm.dll. But in the \Windows directory there's also ril.dll. Maybe something is with those files?
Does the Treo allow you to lock it in EDGE/GSM mode?

You say not UMTS or automatic?
If is it, you may found this in phone settings, 2nd tab, band selection.

Thanks. Just got my Treo today! Keeping it at Edge. Seems faster than all my other Edge phones.
I just upgraded to WM6. The icon now shows H when I'm in HSDPA. I've also seen it switch to 3G from time to time. (I'm assuming that's either Edge or UMTS) I'll have to see if it goes to E when I travel far enough away from the city where HDSPA isnt available yet

I know that E icon is in WM6, but I'd like to activate it somehow in WM5 (I'm not upgrading now...)
Ok I have a Cing 8125 with the TNT.1933 rom. IPL and SPL are both 2.26 GSM is 02.19.11.
Often but not always when the unit boots up it displays not an E but a G icon. Performance appears to be the same. I have to turn off the phone in CM and re enable it for the phone to properly work and display the EDGE E. I know that the E is just a registry hack. So am I connected to EDGE or not. How do I tell and how do I force it to connect to edge on boot up.
Thanks,
nline.
the easiest way of finding out if you are on edge or not is the download speed whilst on the net. If you are downloading a file on standard gsm (g) then you can achieve a maximum speed of say 160kbs if you are on edge you can have double that.
As for getting the phone to automatically select edge, it wont, and it cant be done with a hack either, as, if there is no decent edge signal, for it to grab, it cant use it. Same as if you had no mobile signal to make a call , you couldn't hack the registry to make it find one.
do wizards have edge capabilities then?

Ok so why isn't the phone finding an edge signal on boot up? After it boots up I can turn off and turn back on the phone and it finds the edge signal everytime. I can understand poor signal but I don't think it is the issue here. Better radio rom?
Yes, absolutely (with registry hack on official ROM, or use any unofficial ROM).
Wizard only display "E" logo when the network and stations support it. If you are using a network that doesn't support EDGE GPRS connection, the logo still shows "G" regardless the registry setting.
Maximum speed for non-EDGE GPRS connection is 80kbps (i.e. 10kb/s), so if you are getting speed of more than 10kb/s, then you are definitely connected to EDGE-enabled GPRS network.
However sometimes bad networks (such as the mobile operator I am now using, the New Word Mobility) still get speed of <10kb/s when connected to EDGE-enabled GPRS network, so it is mainly up to operator.
Just installed ranjus rom with radio 1.18. Few questions...
1)it still comes up with the o2 splash screen when I turn on, and it asked me all the o2 question(it is originally an o2 xda exec). I wouldve thought installing a totally new rom wouldve wiped all this??
2) im now using my orange sim in it, but it won't connect to a 3G singal(it didn't do this before I put ranjus rom on it either)
O2 Extended Rom Customisations Are Probably Not Compatible With WM6.1
You Need To Flash The Extended Rom To Remove All The O2 Customisations.
Go Into Your Phone Options And Set The Band To Auto To Enable 3G/GPRS And Not Just GPRS. (GSM = GPRS & UMTS = 3G)
Download The HTC Network Settings Tool And It Will Configure Your Device With The Settings Required For Your Selected Network.
Hope That Solves Your Problems.

I tried to change the band from gsm to auto but it just goes back to gsm and greys all the boxes out! do I need to use that prog you gave the link to?
edit:think I got it to change the band to auto, still not on a 3g network but maybe I am outta range.
the device kept turning off like it was outta battery, but it said there was like 30% left, now im on mains power its workin ine.
can I flash th extended rom witout looisng all the settings and progs I've just loaded on?
I Believe So...
I Think You Can Just Make Sure Theirs No "radio_.nbf" (Radio Rom) Or "nk.nbf" (CE OS Rom) In The Flash Utility Folder.
Then Run The Flash Utility And Dont Perform A Hard Reset After Flashing.
It Should Then Only Update The Extended Rom. The Problem Is If You Have Already Let The Device Autoconfigure,
Alot Of The Crap From The Manufacturers Standard Rom Will Still Be Installed On Your Device.
The Best Way To Remove Would Be A Hard Reset But That Means Having To Reconfigure And Reinstall Etc.
Oh And To Answer Your Previous Question About The O2 Logo, Ranju's Rom Doesnt Flash That Area Of The Device Thus Leaving The O2 Logo Intact.
Their Are Ways To Customise This Logo If You Like.

I will have a tinker later on when im at home in front of my computer. Any idea why I can't get 3G reception? its enabled in the control panel.
So does anyone have any idea why I cant get 3G network reception? Im on radio 1.15 now.
For those of you who can get 3G reception...When you go to Settings>Phone>Network>(Network Selection) Manual...Does it show the regular networks (i.e 'Orange', 'O2 - UK' etc) AND the 3G network (i.e 'Orange 3G', 'O2 - UK 3G' etc)?
Sim Card Possibly.
No The Networks Are All Called The Same Its Just The Radio Bands Used To Connect Data Services That Differ.
Maybe Your SimCard Isnt A 3G Sim Or It Isnt 3G Enabled?
If The Sim Is Not A 3G Sim It Would Only Use GSM I Believe.
Regards,
OllieD
it is definstely a 3g card as it works in my other phone! does everyone get 3g reception on orange using a g3 o2xda with ranju rom and radio 1.15?
Isn't there ANYONE on orange in here??? I have had a look around and I think most of the Orange network runs on a 900MHz UMTS freqency. And it looks like the Uni only supports 1900MHz
UMTS on Ranju 7.7
I am on Orange, using Ranju 7.7 and radio 1.18. I had the same problem as you with the default Phone parameters, but I was able to change the band setting to "Auto" in the phone options. Thus GSM Band became "EGSM+DCS1800" and UMTS Band "UMTS 2100". And after a while the 3G icon appeared !
Universal bad for 3G
i can only say that universal has very bad 3g(UMTS connection) because when most other phones show 4 bars for 3g..my o2 exec only give 1 bar..but it is OK for 2g or GPRS...anyone agree??
Well I just flashed my voda v1640 with ranju v77 Rom, and shows good UMTS performance with italian "TIM" network, both for signal strength and for internet browsing.
the Radio is 1.14.10 (it should be the original one...)
I am having strange problems on my brand new HTC Touch Pro when I am using Opera Mobile. Everything is working fine as long as I am not activating the HSDPA-mode on my touch pro. If I am using GPRS - everything works fine. If I am using UMTS (not HSDPA), I am also able to surf the web with Opera Mobile as long as I want.
But if I active HSDPA and do a softreset (which is needed to enable HSDPA), I am only able to use Opera Mobile for approximately one minute and then the connection hangs completely and I am not able to open more websites. The only thing I can do is manually disconnect the HSDPA-connection using the Comm Manager and then to reconnect. But this is very annoying if I have to manually disconnect and reconnect using the Comm Manager all the time...
I don't know why the hell this happens or what the reason is. The strange thing is, that this only happens if I am using Opera Mobile in HSDPA-mode. If I try to use Pocket Internet Explorer or other apps like Youtube that access the Internet, everything is working fine even in HSDPA-mode. Only Opera Mobile somehow destroys the HSDPA-connections.
But, like I said, Opera Mobile does not do this if I am using it in GPRS or UMTS(384kbit/sec)-Mode.
Am I the only one with this bug or can someone confirm it on his Touch Pro? Please remember that it only appears in HSDPA-mode!
Please, please, please tell me how I can fix this problem and how I can use Opera Mobile with HSDPA on my Touch Pro. The bug existed since day one after I bought the HTC Touch Pro. This means that I did not misconfigure it, this bug already existed when I bought the device.
I really tried a lot of stuff since then... I installed newer Opera Mobile versions, tried to install them on the device or on SD-card but that didn't help at all. The HSDPA-bug always remained the same, no matter what kind of versions I was using. And it also doesn't seem to be a Opera Mobile problem in general because everything is working fine in GPRS or UMTS-mode with Opera Mobile. Does Opera Mobile use different settings for GPRS and HSDPA-conections or how can this strange behaviour be explained?
werry strange problem
how do you activate deactivate HSDPA
i had this option in polaris but in raphael it.s automatic without restart
Here is the only way how I can enable/disable HSDPA (I have german language settings, I hope the english translations are correct):
Einstellungen (Settings) -> Verbindungen (Connections) -> Erweiterte Einstellungen (Advanced Settings) -> HSDPA/HSUPA
In this menu I am able to select between
- "Deaktiviert" (disabled)
- "Nur HSDPA aktivieren" (enable HSDPA only)
- "HSDPA/HSUPA aktivieren" (enable HSDPA and HSUPA)
If I select one of these 3 options, the device tells me that I have to do soft-reset to apply the changes. How come that I have to reset the device if I enable/disable HSDPA and you don't???
i try changing from HSDPA and HSUPA to HSDPA only. you'r right it request an restart
still i don't have your problem
but maybe i have an answer for you: if the network won't support HSDPA (or contract plan) then you will not have internet when connected to HSDPA
most probably you have H coverage but not right to usit
if the network won't support HSDPA (or contract plan) then you will not have internet when connected to HSDPA

Did you actually read my first post completely? I explained into the finest detail that I am successfully able to use HSDPA with all other applications on the device except Opera Mobile. And even Opera Mobile is able to open a few websites using HSDPA. But after 1-2 minutes, the HSDPA-connection hangs and I have to manually disconnect it. But again: this is not a general network error or device error because it only happens if I am using Opera Mobile, not any other application that accesses the internet. But I am repeating myself...
yes but i very much bout that is an opera problem
pocket explorer working may be a fake
also the fact that opera it is working for 1 - 2 minits
practically you still are on non H network for those 1-2 minits
Sorry, I can't follow you...
I am using HSDPA since many months on a couple of other devices, including an O2 HSDPA Surf Stick on my Laptop and I know that I do have a pretty good HSDPA network right here. If I am able to download videos using HSDPA with more than 1 Mbit/sec, then I am wondering what kind of "fake" you are talking about.

UMTS speed its up to 2 Mbps (0.25Mb/s)
HSDPA speed its from 1.8 Mbsp (0.225Mb/s) up to 7.2 Mbps (0.9Mb/s) (14 Mbps only theoreticly)
fake: you'r using an umts connection on a H capable network
m telling you to check the connection because i hade similar problem on a polaris if a set the h network and enter in a umts onlie covrege area internet wont work until i change the connection and reset
the problem was that my internet contract had just umts not H network acces
just trying to help

No, it it not in Germany. Default "UTMS", "3G" or however you will call it is limited to 384 kilobit per second in Germany. I don't know what kind of speeds you are talking about because your dimension units just don't make sense ("Mbps" vs. "Mb/s" vs. "Mbsp").... So like I said:
"default" UMTS = 384 kilobit per second
HSDPA = "more than" 1 Megabit per second
...which means that my connection is not limited to 1 Megabit per second! I just wanted to make clear in my previous post that it is more than default UMTS-speed and that I do have a working HSDPA connection.
the problem was that my internet contract had just umts not H network acces

I am really tired of repeating myself over and over again... I do have a working HSDPA conncection and it is also working on full speed on my HTC Touch pro. The only problems is that the HSDPA-connection is crashing in Opera Mobile. How often should I repeat the things that I already described in previous posts over and over again?
i would like to confirm that i appear to be experiencing the same problem with htc touch pro using opera 9.5
at first i just thought opera was only working some of the time for no apparent reason (this is when i switch to explorer and find it working fine) but after seeing this post, it does look like the non-working-ness is related to the hsdpa connection.
hopefully someone with more expertise than me will be able to solve this problem. thanks!
Now working...
Strange, I am now in "GPRS (HSDPA)" mode but Opera has decided to work again...
Working fully
For those of you who might be interested: -
I got a newer build of Opera Mobile 9.5 (2392) and everything is working great!
A big thank you to those that supplied it!
What is this in the communications settings?
3G Auto Mode
I believe that just means that your phone will use 3G if it is available. If 3G is not available or the option is switched to off, your phone will use 2G (EDGE) instead,
Set your Raphael to use 3G when available.
If you switch it off, it will use 2G network, even if 3G is available..
Ok guys, that makes sense, thank you.
I have another question along the same lines. After I turned the 3G auto mode ON, I see this "H" Appear every once in a while in the top bar. What is it?

That's 3G. The 'H' stands for 'HSDPA', so when it appears, it basically means you're using 3G instead of 2G (EDGE, which would appear as an 'E' instead of an 'H').
All icons, explained :
G --> GPRS, 2.5G, the slowest data connection
E --> EDGE, 2.75G, faster than GPRS
3G --> UMTS, much faster than EDGE
H --> HSDPA (may be HSUPA also..), the fastest data connection available on Raphael..
