SDHC Support - What's Type-I and Type-II? - JASJAR, XDA Exec, MDA Pro ROM Development

I'm thinking of getting a new SDHC card for my Universal (currently running Tomal's v8.2). I'm leaning towards getting an 8Gb MicrosSD card with adapter for convenience, and obviously have the choice of class 2, 4, or 6 - there's not much price difference.
However, OllieD's SD settings ap mentions Type-I and Type-II, and I don't know what this is. I'm assuming it's nothing to do with the SDHC class?
Should I be ok getting a class 6 card, or are there compatibility issues I should be aware of? I'm likely to purchase the card from eBay, so if somebody has bought a MicroSD that works find from there, then please provide the info of type and seller.
Cheers,
Steve.

Hi Steve,
OllieD actually has coded the UI for me. Thanx to him.
Type-1 is actually the driver in compatibility mode of Class4. You should try first the type-2 driver if it's a Class6 card and select type-1 in case type-2 doesn't work well.
regards

Is it safe to assume that those using class 4 cards should select Type-I?

Just to throw a bit of added confusion into the mix; according to SKTools, my 8Gb class 6 Sandisk MicroSDHC runs about 40% quicker using the Type I setting, than it does using Type II.
Cheers,
Steve.

I've just done some benchmarking with PocketMechanic SD-card benchmark and I must say that my Adata microSDHC 8GB "Turbo" class 6 card (in an SD adapter of course) also works significantly faster with "Type I" set. In some cases it's even 2-3 times faster.

Agreed, this is what I have found. Type-I is faster for my 8GB class 6 card.
My 4GB card was about same speed with any setting.
And my 2GB MMC card was fastest with Type-II.

I tested my card: Kingmax 8GB SDHC class 6
It is 3-6x times faster with the Type I setting.

My V-Gen 4GB SDHC is unstable with type II, need to be re-inserted all the times. but, it very stable with type I.

Yeah, I found the same with my 8G SanDisk Ultra-II. I always select Type-1 now and have never had any problems.
Only thing I would add, if you're playing with ROM's and have to DOC-format the device, make sure your SD card is out and safe somewhere before you start resetting the device into bootloader mode.

Micro SD Problem VOX/S710

i've recently got my hands on a VOX/s710 phone
my last phone before this used micro SD cards, it was a nokia
when i try to put my nokia micro SD into my VOX, it doesnt recognize, but, as soon as i put it on a nokia, other phones like a palm, etc, it recognizes
is there a problem between nokia branded micro SD cards with HTC?
i tried another brand of micro SD and it worked perfectly
any ideas?
cheers
Initially I tried a NOKIA micro SD card with my Vox and it worked fine.
hum, tks for the reply
so no clues at what the problem might be?
guess if i dont resolve this, ill have to buy another micro SD card
May be, you give a try by formatting the card using a card reader from a Windows PC. That might help.
Yes, make a backup and format to FAT32 (also useful if you want to flash from sd card)! Then put your files back on the card and try again!
thanks for the tips
fortunately, i dont have any indispensable information on the microSD card, i didnt use it a lot, since it was a 1G card, and i had a 2G on my older nokia.
i'm going to try and format it and then post the result hopefully it will work
but since i dont have a memory card reader right now, im gonna try and put it on my old nokia, connect it to the pc and try to format it from there, or format it from inside the nokia phone.
ill figure out something
thanks again for the tips
cheers
=========
tks for the tip tryed it right now, and now its working fine
many thanks both of you for the help!
I have 2 GB microsd card installed. Is it possible to install a 4Gb card or more? Who tried? Does it support SDHC?
Funny thing, I've got an answer from htc support, they say 2Gb is the only possible amount supported

I dont know exactly how to do it search the forum, but i know that there is a thread that says that partion 4gb (using WM5torage that thread tells how to) and then you can use it.
the vox supports SDHC microSD up to 8Gb, found this in www.pocketpc.ch (will post the link l8 when back on my pc).
i'm using a sandisk SDHC 4Gb fat32 formatted, works perfect! i will buy a 8Gb soon and post the results here .
edit: http://www.pocketpc.ch/htc-s710/39075-8-gb-micro-sd-htc-s710-moeglich.html the forum is in german there....
remembered to post this note, after fomarting the sd card, it worked well
just another question though, you guys are talking about 4 and 8 gigs sd cards
doesnt having a much bigger sd card slow down the phone? i've heard of such rumours but never got the chance to tested myself, and since i'm willing to make a sd upgrade i would like to know if its better to stick with a 1 gig or 2 gigs sd card, or i can go ahead and get a 4 or 8 gigs?
cheers
so, finally i bought this fine 8Gb microSDHC from sandisk, and i works just perfect.

i never tried with a 1 or 2Gb card, so there i cannot say. but on the otherhand i did not remark an diffrence of speed with the 4 or 8Gb card, they're just as fast as usual (in cellular device or in pc with cardreader). the only thing i can say, is that cards from cheap(er) brands are always slower than cards from quality brands (such as sandisk, as example). and also SDHC cards should always be faster than 1 or 2Gb cards, because they have a newer controllers (not 100% sure about this point, i think i might have read that in c't).
i hope i could help a little bit...
Dang, 8GB cards work without driver patching? That is champion. I'll be ordering myself one soon.
Yep, can confirm 8gb card works fine, have had one in mine for some months now...
Now what about 16gb? was that article written before 16's were available even the sandisk site seems to be out of date saying nokias that are supposed to support 16's only support 8?
anyone actually confirmed 16's don't work?

32GB somewhere in the first half of next year.
Pricing unknown, but I guess that 16GB will have an intro price of something like € 100,00.

i guess we have to wait some time to test it
at work, some weeks ago, i discussed this with a dev. and he meant that from the hardware side it should be no problem, but maybe the driver needs to be updated. i'm not sure, but as i know the driver adds support for sdhc, no matter of the size of the card. he's not a sys dev, he does apps and branding, i'm only test-ex and advanved user, so correct me if i'm wrong (i'm still learning ).
edit: found following on http://www.wisegeek.com/what-are-sdhc-cards.htm
The new 2.00 specification should last a bit longer, as it allows SDHC cards to reach a maximum capacity of 32GB.
Click to collapse
so i think, if the device supports that specification (and the vox does), it should support cards up to 32Gb.
and again some info about speed:
The SDHC specification 2.00 calls for cards to be classified according to the minimal sustained DTS as follows:
Class 2: minimum sustained DTS of 2MB/sec
Class 4: minimum sustained DTS of 4MB/sec
Class 6: minimum sustained DTS of 6MB/sec
SDHC cards are classified to guarantee a specific sustained DTS. This potentially saves consumers money, as flash cards are priced not only according to capacity, but also to speed. For example, if a product's maximum DTS is 2MB/sec, dishing out extra cash for Class 4 or Class 6 SDHC cards would be a waste of money. Conversely, devices that can utilize the 4MB/sec or 6MB/sec DTR (i guess the author meant DTS, kel187) will perform significantly better with Class 4 or Class 6 SDHC cards, respectively.

my 4Gb card is Class 2 and my 8Gb is Class 4. i did not recognized any diffrences in speed advantages, neither on the mobile nor on the pc. so the vox and my cardreader must be class 2 devices, what a pitty ^^

Micro SD card not detected

So today i brought a 8gb Transcend Class 6 mico sd card for my raphael. So i went back home and try it then i found it not detected on the file explorer but it says expansion slot in use when i go to Settings>About. Thanks in advance.
[email protected]
Transcend is not recomended by HTC. i am also having same problem with my SD card which is made by Transcend (4GB capacity). it detects when you put it in phone for a longer time, but you can not write/save/copy anything in it. it will say FILE CAN NOT COPY, MAKE SURE THE PHONE IS PROPERLY CONENCTED AND SOURCE FILE IS NOT MOVED BLA....BLA... BLA...
when i checked with HTC team, they advised me to use micro SD from SANDISK.
well the weird thing is when i insert the card on my friends phone(HTC TYTN 2) it detects it instantly after inserting it in. But when i insert it on my phone it doesn't work, btw i also tried another card from my friend, it a sandisk 4gb and it worked. hmm this seems top be a uncommon issue.
I ahve the SAME exact problem with the 8GB Transcend Class 6 Micro SD that I just bought for my phone. I've had no issues at all with the 4GB Transcend Class 6 card that I currently have. On the other hand, I had a 4GB Sandish Class 6 that would not work in my Raphael but would work just fine in my Kaiser.
Appearently the card worked randomly but i can't copy any file to the card for some reason.
look for something called SDformatter by panasonic i had similar troubles with a couple sd cards till i found this program.
they all work now in any phone/device.
Is there any specific setting to set in the program Panasonic formating program? Erase enable or whatever? I had my SD card working for about 2 or 3 days and now its not detected again.
I have similar my 8GB does not get recognized and if does it's only for a matter of minutes then corrupts but my 2GB reads fine, but the 8GB is fine in Kaiser already used the SDformatter to which makes it read till corrupts again within minutes...
Going to try some other cards out in local shop before purchase will take laptop to transfer data while there.

I have read in a lot of post that Transcend 8GB class 6 card have problems to be recognized by Rapahel.
I also have one. On my Kaiser worked well.
With stock rom it wasn't recognized by Raphael; with Energyrom it is recognized, but i used for few minutes, because i feared that something bad could happen..after reading all these post.
I usually use a Kingston 2gb card.
We were unlucky buying these cards...

bought Kingston sdhc class 4 BUT....

Hi
I bought a Kingston 8GB SDHC Class 4 card today, I used a Class 2 before, anyway, I copied a lot of music (about 4GB) to the card from the computer but I don't even get close to 4MB/s only 1.38MB/s, have I done something wrong or is it a problem with the card?
thanks
If you're copying file to your phone over usb it will be capped at 2MB/s. It's the phone's fault, not your card. I bought a 16gb class 6 without knowing this and now I have to take my memory card out if I want to take advantage of the write speeds.

You may have been scammed. To know for sure, you should run the h2testw program against the new card. It's quite common for scammers to pass off 2GB cards as 8, 16, or even 32GBs. They can program the card to tell your PC that they are bigger than they actually are.
The h2testw script can test this by writing 8 1GB files (approximately) to your card.
Good luck!

Storage card issue

Can anyone help explain this??
I have a 8GB ADATA MicroSD card that works great in multiple different Tilt's and Tilt 2's, but not Fuze's.
When I put the SD card in one of the Fuze's I get the Storage Drive option, so it obviously recognizes it, but I do not have the "Storage Card" option when browsing in File Explorer (yes, I unplugged the USB cable before checking). It is the same behavior across all 3 Fuze's I have here.
Again, the card works great between the Tilt's and Tilt 2's.
Weird.......
well it might be because the fuze doesn't support 8gb micro sd cards. It will show that it is there, but you might not be able to use it on the FUZE. I'm not sure how much it can actually support, but i'm using a 4gb microsd.
Fuze supports 16GB and pretty sure even 32GB cards the issue will be class for some reason class 6 cards can be a problem.
My 8GB Class 6 has same problem Kaiser/Excalibur reads it but not Touch Pro.

Mine's class 6 too, stylez. I wonder if that has something to do with it.
Hi, I'm new to the forums. It's only an idea, as I have read alot of comments across various websites that the Touch Pro does not support Class 6 cards. But you could maybe try the Panasonic SD Memory Card Formatting Software Ver.2.0. It won't do no harm.
I would try re-formatting the card as well. If a simple re-format doesn't work (just use a card reader to do it on a pc), then you could try different cluster sizes. You can get a demo from www.softwinter.com that works really well.

16gb micro sdhc class 10, write speed 6mb/s?

Hello!
I bought Kingston 16gb class 10 micro sdhc card and I tested it on my nexus one getting result 6mb/s and in unbutu getting same results. Both was directly pluged (Not Usb). I closed every running application in nexus one and I got same result. I also tested in different partitions and in ext2 I was getting little slower result than in fat32. But both were same or under 6mb.
Is there something wrong with the card or is it issue with nexus one that android 2.2 doesnt support class 10?

please include where it was purchased, how much, and if there are any serial numbers/stamps on the card. there are known fakes in circulation (even brick and mortor retailers) fyi.
http://www.verkkokauppa.com/popups/prodinfo.php?id=1244 , bought for 101 euros. Serial in the card: SDC10/16GB N0206-001.AD00lF Taiwan.
ANd on adapter reads CHINA
wow thats really slow i have a 16Gb class 4 and i get 7 ~ 8 mb write speeds when the card is in N1 and connected with usb.
I would assume it's the card because as I and someone else stated above, get higher speeds with a lower class card.
As stated here:
It's my understanding that the "Class" simply refers to speed rating and thus should not effect compatibility. As long as the card supports the microSDHC standard and isn't any larger than 32gb it should work. You should also note however that in the past, vendors have claimed a higher class rating when the card did not actual perform that fast. I suggest buying from a trusted vendor with a good name.

Anyone tested the 32GB card, I know it's only class 2....

Class 10 should be supported, but they are usually SDHC3.0 card which is new I think...
I have a kingston class 10 as well, same issue, read speed is good but write speed is rated as 2gb, I tried to change the sector size to 4k and still the same.
For those thinking it's a fake card it is not! when I place the card in an adaptor I do 10MB write and close to 16MB read so this is a class 10.
I am not sure if it's the SDC tester app that is wrong or the phone
but since the phone behave fairly well compared to my class 4 card it could be the application. I will do some internal transfer tomorrow to see how fast they go
me too
