Upgrade advice ( contracts nearly up ) - General Topics

Hi guys, hopefully my low post count doesnt stop me getting some advice from some people who obviously know alot more than me about smartphones ?
Im currently on O2 with an XDA orbit, now ive stopped using it for calls/texts and only use it for tomtom6. Main reason i stopped using it is its a little slow and found texting on a touch screen to tedious (spelling?). So currently using my O2 sim in my unlocked k850i.
Now...my contract is up in roughly 2/3 weeks and was considering another smartphone, hopefully one that will play movies as im a student and work part time night shifts in a garage, it would be nice to be able to watch a movie. From what ive read the Tytn II/MDA Vario III/O2 XDA stellar will play movies fine if encoded correctly and played with tcpmp ?.
Dilema is...i have the following options. ( without ringing up and haggling O2 )
O2 XDA Stellar : 18 month contract, £35 per month, £89.99 one off fee, 600 minutes & unlimited texts.
or
T-Mobile MDA Vario III : 18 month contract, £36 per month, £0 one off fee, 1000 minutes & unlimited texts.
or
Something else ? ive no idea what else is as good.
Also, what are the differences in the two options above, i know they are the same handset but branding will be different wont it. I know the stellar comes with the " better " headset that has a 3.5mm jack for my sony headphones, does the Vario III also come with this ?
Thanks in advance for your help ( will hopefully save me getting a SonyEricsson C902 )
Andy

Nobody ? , somebody out there must have advice for me surely.

What's with O2 and the XDAIIi ?

I rang O2 yesterday to see about posssibly upgrading my XDAII and getting the XDAIIi but the sales operative I spoke to was less than helpful.
"we don't do that phone" was the reply.
I stated that it's on their website and that billboards all over London show it in all it's glory. He then went off to ask his manager and after a long wait, he returned and said they should have it next week!!!
What a shambles, to advertise something then not even allowing you to order it.
Is there anywhere else in UK I can order it from? Or is it just "scotch mist".
Has anybody else been luckier than me?
I am a O2 select customer (due to the amount i spend each month) (over £50 p/m automaticaly makes you a select customer) and this gets you slightley better upgrade prices. But to get my XDA2i i did the same as i did last year to get the XDA2.
I got our local o2 store to call me as soon as they had a 2i in stock, i then go to the shop and pay what ever they charge, and then a month later or when ever "select" get them in they credit my account with the differance between what i paid in a shop to what they would have sold it for.
they probley do this because they have no answer as to why cant i a select customer have a phone, but jo bogs off the street can get one in most of the o2 shops.
I went into a London O2 shop (Cheapside) on 31 Jan, and they upgraded my XDA II to a IIi on the spot. They had only received the IIi that morning, apparently. Was charged £175 (which I will significantly reduce by selling on the original device). I've been on a £25pm contract since November 03.
Good luck
Tim
It seems I may be in luck... Oxford street are holding one for me and I'm off there this afternoon to do the deed.
It's £179 so that's not too sad...
wooooohoooo!!!

What is Scotch mist?
it's a euphemism for B******t !!!!!
it's a euphemism for B******t !!!!!
I phoned up O2 UK shop, held for 20 mins, and they said they don't have any - probably not for a month or two (even though it appears you can order new ones on-line - but I wanted an upgrade which you don't appear to be able todo without phoning them.
I then phoned the two big O2 shops in Manchester and they said they don't have any either or a delivery date
I'm stuck - seems like London gets the new stuff first.
Russ
i hope they will release this thing in germany soon
i cant wait any longer
XDA IIi
I phoned O2 on Wedensday 2nd Feb and received my XDAIIi on Thursday 3rd Feb withouth a hitch. My contract is a pay up front yearly 200 mins per month peak for £150ish.
Suggest you speak to another member of staff.
Hi Folks , I agree with daash's opinion, speak to someone else
I rang O2 in the UK as I was thinking of cancelling my contract and check out the deal they offered me
XDA 2i for £100, should be £199
They will also take £10 a month off my existing £25 a month tariff and give me the Gold Insurance for £5 a month
So all I pay is for the phone is £100 and tarif & insurance is only £20 a month
The number I called was 0870 2410202, option 4 (Retentions)
Get them before they change their minds
PS Anyone want to buy an XDA2, WM 2003, Unlocked, boxed with all accessories incl PDA software and Tom Tom Navigator 3
PM me with any offers
Thanks
On monday I left me xda II in a taxi :'(
No luck in getting back but rung up o2 to cancle and get a new simcard whch have now got. They said I couldnt upgrade until june which is for a year .. they offered me £160 for xda IIi, but said they couldnt do anything until June.
Perhaps it depends on who you speak to, I dont know what commision they get for selling there phones, perhaps the phone is a price, then a top price which includes their commision, they can knock off their commisison depending on their mood?
I got a s**t motorola MX200 tempory replacement which at least connects to me pc, but not half as good as wm 2003.. Wouldnt mind getting an update for smartphone 2002.. loads of stuff it lacks in.

Dare I say... I Phone...

Right now Ive blastphemed in public I thought this as the best place to get an opinion on what handset I should go for next as its time to renew my o2 contract again. I used an XDA years ago and an Exec for a couple of years but then when the n95 came out I sold out and went for something I could worry about less and had a decent camera on it. Now recently Ive been drooling over the though of an I phone and the thought of unlimited web access etc, basically o2 just phoned to try renewing my contract, they wont budge on i phone deals, 160 for 16gb handset then 35 a month for 500txts an unlimited web but, they were trying to get me to take a xda ignito or htc diamond as ive learned it is known! sounds pretty sweet deal, 1000 texts 500 mins, unlimited web, free handset and £30 a month but, after reading reviews at http://www.gsmarena.com/o2_xda_ignito-2491.php it sounds a bit of a crappy phone and I dont know what to do!!! any suggestions!!!! I would really love an I Phone as Im a bit of a mac fanboy now but Im open minded, blackberry? xda's?
1 last thing, if I get a phone like this with unlimited web, can I hook it up to my laptop an surf on my laptop for free using the phone as a modem???

I've Just ordered an XDA Flint

Hi All,
I took the plunge today and ordered myself an XDA Flint!!!
I'm looking forward to receiving it in a few days!
Does anyone have any tips/advice/info etc on the device?
Any/All info greatly appreciated!
Thanks
Alex
Main tip is just to play with it for a while and get used to it!
The O2 ROM is pretty good (though Michy's is better!) and remember that changing the ROM will invalidate any warranty with O2.
O2 don't supply any sort of front end (HTC Home, Mobile Shell or PointUI) so you are free to install whatever suits you. In fact the O2 ROM is very basic indeed, which does have the benefit of saving memory!
You managed to order it straight from the O2 online shop?
I got told that the XDA Flint wasn't available anymore... :|

I'm sure I will waste hours of my life playing with the device when it arrives!!
This will be my second XDA, but my 4th HTC device so I'm used to the basic O2 ROMs!
I think I will stick with the standard ROM until it is out of warranty then flash it with a new from from here! - I've recently flashed my Tytn2 and the ROMs from here are excellent!

I had some trouble getting hold of one!
I have had to migrate my O2 consumer tariff to a Business tariff in order to get one! - The are ONLY available on business tariffs! I ordered it this week!
They will give it you on a consumer contract, you just need to hastle them into it.
I had a high level complaint open with them for over a month, in the end they gave me the Flint on a £35 a month contract 750mins 300text and insurance.
just a one off fee of £99.
I was happy with that, but i cant state how how hard it was to get this device.

I have been migrated onto a business tariff, 300 mins, All O2 to O2 calls free, Free calls to 10 nominated landline numbers, Unlimited texts, 200mb data. for £30 per month, 1 off fee of £99 and a free bluetooth headset! 24 month contract but with another free upgrade after 12 months!
Didn't have any hassle either!!
Get the unlimited data bolt-on asap!, as soon as you start using it to its potential 200mb will be gone rather fast.
Exchange Email is ofc a must have.
You have to try Pocket Lemmings on this device, it owns best game for pda ever!
I started trying to get mine in Nov 2008, this is why I had so much hastle. No one at O2 had any idea what this device was, I kept getting told different things every time I called in. You know how call centres work its quick call turn around, I was getting fobbed off left right and centre so I complained and only managed to get one because at the time it didn’t say it was for Business customers only.
I finally got mine in Jan 09. After many, many calls.
Mines on a 18month contract, and was in effect a upgrade so my 5+ years with o2 as a direct customer is unbroken, I hope they made you aware that as you migrated to business it’s the same as starting a new account so you won’t be eligible for promotions to long standing customer.

Orbit 2 and a little knowledge has lead to disaster

Hello, firstly i hold my head in shame by being one of those owners of a bit of kit that should have been given to my teenage son, but however i'm 34 years old and in somewhat of a pickle. Here's my dilema and if anyone can help i would be grateful for some light at the end of this....
Ok I have genuine O2 Xda Orbit 2 handset, just got the £20/month 12 month contract sim, internet works fine, voice calls fine alas no video calls, always says failed. O2 assure me that it's all tickey boo their end and it could be something to do with the previous owner messin with the handset settings, they seem relutant to support me with handset problems seeing as i'm just a contract sim 'council' customer. I did however get talked through some rom updates only to be told O2 don't support video calls on this phone. If anyone could suggest anything else other than a hammer or me reverting back to Asda pay as you go .......
Once again HELP!

How much in the UK?

Hi All
I am now due an upgrade on my Desire, and was going to go for the HTC One S. O2 however want £36 a month, for 600 minutes, 1gd data and unlimited texts, so i was wondering what people are paying for it over here?
Cheers
Go to the vodafone eforum and do it that way you get much better deals! Or just contact them through twitter just look for vodafone UK deals
Sent from my HTC One S using XDA Premium App
Go to mobiles(.)co(.)uk, chose HTC One S -> T-Mobile -> Show All and you can find this deal:
Line Rental £26.00 monthly with cashback(7 Months Free) Includes 750MB data allowance , 300 Minutes , Unlimited Texts
Plus you can get an extra £60 cashback if you go to quidco(.)com, register, search for mobiles(.)co(.)uk, click on the link and complete your order.
All that will bring your average cost per month down to £15.92 with a free phone, 300 mins, unlimited texts and 750mb of data
phones4u is currently doing £27 24month contract on O2, 300mins, 500Mb data, also doing £26 24 month on vodafone 300mins, 500Mb data. But phone free, and SIM free, unbranded as I was told yesterday when I was in one of their shops playing around the one s. (oh yes, the deals only available online but I think that's better cos you have the 14days cooling period which in store you don't get it)
I am planning to get the o2 deal since always on o2 but just waiting to decide which colour to go for... just cannot decide...
i really need 1gb of data! i am going for the grey, just to get away from the black ones chipping whilst those phones are still in circulation!
Cheers all.
Three are by far the best. Just changed to them and their signal and 3G speed is great! When tethered to my PC using wifi and the three networks 3G on speed test I get 56ping, 8/9mb Download, 2.5mb upload.
The deal I went for was Unlimited Data, 1000mins, 5000 texts for £33 a month with £60 credit spread over 3rd and 4th bill.
3 have come a long way...
I used to hate them, They where horribly branded, and removing the simlock was almost impossible, compared to other networks.
But they are at the top for smartphone deals, The internet deals they offer + the speed is almost unbeatable.

I totally. I remmember their first proprietary handsets and they were nasty cheap plastic... Do you remember those £11 3 phones from Savers? The advertising used to get right on my nerves too, and the support was aweful. I came back to them in 2010 for the One Plan and haven't been more impressed with a carrier since.
Support is also top notch, never have to wait in a queue and like you say, the speeds are the best around...
I don't want to sound like I'm advertising them, but they really have turned a new leaf in terms of service and reliability.. As well as the fact they don't put their fugly logo on every phone I buy anymore
Have been with ThreeUK for 4 years, had to cancel my contract this month, as I moved to a new place and don't have any signal indoors what-so-ever. I also found their customer support very useless to help me solve my problem, but had no problems in past to get a good deal for upgrade.
Now I'm with T-mo and my phone arriving tomorrow

I'm on that tariff but I pay £32 a month as I've been an O2 customer a while so I got 1gb for the price of 500mb (£6). They also threw in 50mms messages a month. I also get 500 o2 to o2 minutes and since almost all of my friends and family are on o2 it works out well. If you've been with them a while give them a call and see what they say. 2 years ago I had a similar situation and I just asked and got 2 extras just like that (unlimited o2 to o2 calls and 500mb bolt on, both for free). If not that 3 deal that someone mentioned for £33 seems like a steal. Phone was free on o2 btw.

Wow thats shocking! I've only been with them 5 years and even then this is the most expensive tariff I've ever taken out with them...usually I was a SIM only customer (£15 a month). I go on their live chat thing and ask what are my options are and I usually get someone saying 'well since you've been with us a while' etc etc. Maybe try your luck and say you've been with them 12 years and you want this phone but that tariff is too expensive and competitors are cheaper and you may have to leave. They seem to value customers so could offer you a loyalty discount (and yes they do this cause my account has a bolt on thingy saying 'Loyalty Discount, -£4'). I have half a mine to ask them to knock another few ££ off for those 50mms messages cause they will NEVER get used lol.
If you have been with your provider for quite a while, then try and call their cancellation line and request your PAC code, they will offer you a really good deal just to keep you with them, but if you deny all their offers and go away with the PAC code, wait for another call... with the best deal possible
got pac code. no further calls. sod them! i've gone with the Three UK deal. 500 minutes, unlimited data and texts. £32 a month. O2 have disappointed me to say the least!
EDIT: Thanks for all your advice!
Why no one commented on the deal that I found?
Is it because of T-Mobile or 300 minutes is not enough?
I have never used T-Mo, so I'm curious a little bit now
I'm on Orange panther 31. As it suggests, £31 with 400 mins, unlimited texts and 750mb data though CPW. Also includes free sky sports on the phone and another one of those swappable things.
I also get 15% loyalty discount for staying with them so works out at £26 odd coupled with roaming data access to T-Mobile I'm very rarely without H connection.
Sent from my HTC One S using Tapatalk 2
whats this roaming data ?? How do you use tmobile when your with orange ?
Id like to know more about this, because with vodafone the 3g signal is non existent where i live, But tmobile have excellent 3g signal (my GF is with them)
Basically, if you're on Orange (my carrier) or T Mobile you can use either network for phone and data. Mine seems to spend more time on T Mobile than Orange but either way, coverage is great it automatically picks the best one I think.
You also can manually move to either via network selection if you prefer.
Plus orange do that loyalty discount too.

I personaly dont understand, why u all look for "carrier" phones with monthly payment...
Isnt there any "local" internet shops (similar to ebay/amazon) where you can buy? Here there is planty of them! Choose the one u like or the price u like and go ahead!
You can see some of search results here "http://www.salidzini.lv/search.php?q=htc+one" But ofc, these shops dont send outside Latvia, so its not option for thread author

Ohhh i know what you mean now, Orange and Tmobile joined up last year..
I just thought you mean, if you internet connection is crap you could use someone else network lol
Like I (vodafone) could use... say 3 UK network when my 3g network fails.... haha that would be impressive
