Its been over a year since I started logging back into this site. Mostly due to the demands of work, but partly because of the direction that I saw the site moving. I remember at one point, new members were scared to even post a question at all, regardless of how intelligent it was. I must admit, that I myself got caught up in the bashing of newer members. I thought that there would be no way to turn the site around because things were just getting out of control. I just wanted to say that its real nice to see fellow developers productively sharing information and contributing to this community again instead of tearing it apart. I was astonished to see other members reprimanding a senior member for replying with a rude comment to a new member. Its good to know things are back to the good times, and I guess you guys can count on seeing more of me.

As im sitting here at work reading posts i cant help but notice the redundant questions asked by new users with 1-8 post counts. Anywere you go you typically have to pay for tech support. In my opinion people are seeing all you can do with a WIN-MO device and taking advantage of the site. The info is there and all you have to do is search for a couple of minutes. Its really frustrating reading about tom-tom, how to install a .cab, how do I flash a rom, I never mind helping someone, but they have to be willing to learn, and 9 times out of 10 they just want somone to do it for them. I have even seen numerous people go to the extent of creating step-by-step videos and dedicated threads explaining EVERY single possibility and how to do it. But the fact remains still redundant threads. I have an idea, i dont know if this is possible, but make a new member watch a video and take a quiz and if they pass then access granted. Anyway im rambling on but thats my feelings.
I think we all know WM is not the easiest OS to use, and the extent of its power just means there are more opportunities for users to get lost and confused.
I think if we want to continue to benefit from the network effect of having many new users we need to continue supporting the very same users.
Some forums take this principle to heart, and welcome new users, and encourage new users to ask questions by giving points to people who provide answers, and buttons to give thanks etc.
I've used PPC's for 7 years now, and have been helped many times by the amazing experts in this forum. I am thankful its a friendly place, and hope that will long continue.

The issue of newbies asking "1000 times" questions has been raised before.
This is no longer a small technical forum as it used to be in the past (I guess it is our own fault and the price of fame).
However it was decided not to limit registration and participation on this forum.
There are other closed forums which admit people based on skill or posts reputation.
Please note that if you run in to such noob threads and you do not feel like helping just ignore them.
Noob bashing brings no positive results.
hi guys - as my inspire comrades, i'd love to offer you guys spotify invites. it's through this cool service i found called klout that measures your influence via social networks. they give you cool perks (ie spotify invites). anyways, here's the link: http://klout.com/perk/Spotify/Spoti...eeb5e4309f4a1e38f2a120afc3953fb10d7a27e7bf964

Let me start this off by saying that I respect and love our mods for all their great work.
However, I have seen more and more in the past month or month.5 that many of the threads in this subforum have been closed. Some because they're no longer relevant for whatever purpose (which is a good thing), but other select threads are closed because they are off topic. The question I pose is why do some off-topic threads have to be closed?
Granted, this is a forum for developers and for phone support, applications, questions, etc, it is also a community. and because it's a community within a community (inspire users), I'd like to be able to have few off-topic conversations without them being closed by the mods. This is also the general subforum and therefore, I think it's appropriate if I want to start a slightly off-topic conversation with my fellow inspire users.
I understand the fact that sometimes off-topic threads can cause clutter, but I think thats most relevant in the case of multiple threads of the same topic.
disclaimer: conan, this post was not really inspired by you asking the other user to use the off-topic forum in the other spotify invite thread, but is a result of various threads i've seen closed recently. also, as i mentioned earlier, i would like to share the spotify invites with my fellow inspire users, not other random people that happen to also be browsing the off-topic forum.
lastly, i'd like to thank all of you amazing people for making my experience with the inspire so freaking awesome. this goes from the devs to the other people like me that respect and love the devs' work to the noobs without who we would be so peaceful and happy without having to tell them to search
[/rant]
I appreciate what your saying about the fact that you'd rather offer these to another inspire user, not just the first random OT user to jump on your thread.
That said, there is an undeniable problem at the moment with clutter on the forums.
While your post is entirely genereous and well intentioned it is not strictly "on topic". I know this may seem petty but if we (the moderation team) are to bring the forums back into line the way they used to be, we need to be consistent in our actions.
You may not have asked for my opinion but I'll offer it anyway..
I would have just picked out a couple of members you'd like to donate these invites to and PM'd them, your two fav devs or someones who's helped you with a problem for example. Perhaps even your friendly forum moderator (just kidding).
I'm not gonna close your thread right now because like I said, I appreciate the intention behind it but let me know when they are claimed so I can close it and prevent it turning into a "Where can I get an invite??" thread...
Cheers.
I know this seems contrary to XDA's recent apparent policy of consolidating the number of forums rather than expanding, but maybe a community/off-topic board for various high-traffic devices would be in order.
I also have Spotify, but no invites, and would highly recommend you take this generous guy up on his offer.

whenever i rant, i like to hear opinions from everyone that i'm ranting about. so thanks for your opinion what do you think about having an inspire off-topic subforum? i feel that since the Q&A section popped up, the general section has been MUCH cleaner, so props for that! maybe this well help too, maybe not. oh well.
and also thanks for the advice about PM'ing people - i'll try that next time.

Your the second person to bring this up. Are you guys conspiring against me
Initially I refused, as I've tried it elsewhere and it was a spectacular failure.
I will however, consult the oracle and see what he/she/it says....
@the op, gonna close this now if we are all done. Thanks for the rant

Why is it that the so called MODS in this place would rather lock a thread than to accept the fact they are ****ed in the head! I don't know what the deal is with the MODS here but they need to get their heads out their ass and address the real issues instead of holding a grudge! You are loosing some great people because of your arrogant stupid ass I am god attitude. So I hope to see xda flop on its sorry ass!!!!!!! PEACE OUT!
Agreed.

Well although I think you could've said that in a more tasteful manner (as to not stoop down to their level) I still agree.
Tator's thread regarding dfgas' recognized developer status (or lack thereof) was a pretty calm thread and, aside from a few comments made by other users (which were minor at worst) it was not in violation of any XDA forum rules. It was more importantly though our little Mesmerize (and Showcase) community coming together collectively to show our support for one of our developers. The overwhelming majority agreed that he did deserve recognized developer status. Closing that thread, in my opinion, was about as close as you can get to downright censorship in an attempt to control our opinions here. We have the right to speak our minds and voice our opinions, as long as its within forum rules. If a few members bend or break a rule, then by all means, a moderator can edit his post, but the entire thread should not be closed, especially when we are voicing our support for one of our developers.
Considering...
"[XDA] is and always will be a site for developers, pure and simple. Without them we are nothing, without them there would be no reason for XDA Developers to exist; we should never ever forget that. Without them this place would not be called XDA-Developers but something else, e.g Mobile Phone User Support Services For Ungrateful Nerds. XDA is about developing and is for developers. Any user that recognizes that will gain the most benefit from this site."

I am still very shocked that a thread was closed when its sole purpose was to show our support for one of our developers and to let him know that we were behind him even after he had been denied recognition that he has absolutely earned.
I also believe part of the frustration and anger a lot of us share is regarding the manner in which the thread was locked. jerdog and I do not see eye to eye, he knows that and I know that, and that is what it is, however I will say in the most respectful way that I think telling, basically our sub-forum as a whole, that this manner was not 'our place' to comment on was disrespectful to all of us and a slap in all our faces. Because it is absolutely our place. A developer with no users and no community behind him/her is no more useful than a lone hammer just sitting idle without someone around to manipulate it. A developer needs his users just as much as the users need their developer. Without users, a developer's work is pointless. So to tell us it is not 'our place' to voice our opinion when we believe our developer has been wronged, completely undermines the developer-user relationship and is a extemely poor attitude to display. Especially to refer to our support of dfgas as "whining and complaining" I thought was completely uncalled for.
holy crap, you made an intelligent post :O
haha I completely agree with you on all counts. these guys need to get their act together, the more they act like they did in that thread the less I want to come to this site for anything.

The reason for the thread's closing boils down to these few points:
The only person who can petition for someone to be recognized as a developer, is THAT DEVELOPER THEMSELVES. That was stated a few times in that thread as well as the PM sent to the applicant when they aren't selected.
Any attempt to drum up support is counter-productive as it's not your place, and only comes across as whining which is reserved for ages 0-2.
That being said, any further attempts to drum up a mob will fall under the rules of XDA and you will be, at the least, infracted - and most likely given a vacation from the site so as to pursue other hobbies. It's the rules - if you don't like them - there are other places you can frequent - you're not being paid to stay here, nor are we (Mods and Admins) paid to put up with it.
This thread is closed. If you have any issues with that, feel free to PM me or any SM.
I posted 2 threads today from my phone the xda app keep crashing. I posted pics in separate post the app was giving me an error. Then 3 members decided to start trolling about i'm bumping constantly. I feel if you had common sense you could se the times of the first post were close together. The thread would have been near the top anyway. I told them the issues i was having with the app. They all seemed to think I was lying or stupid. I have alot going on my wife is sick they dont know what it is. The rare conditions our never a good thing only selling the items both new a love. The specialist she has to see is out of network and out of town. Instead of any of these senior members pm with there concerns they all wanted to argue on the thread thus keeping it it up on the top longer anyway. I'm not out here trying to cheat or break rules here. Xda is suppose to be a community. I just wonder why these members could not have just taken me at my word.
First of all, sorry to hear about your wife. I truly hope things improve
Now onto the matter at hand.
Unfortunately, as you said, a lot of users around the forums do like to troll people who have genuine problems and questions. They do it in an attempt to seem like they have some meaning in their lives.
The best way to deal with them is simply not to reply to them at all, otherwise situations can very easily get out of hand.

I am older than the majority on here. I am amazed how in my case the HTC One X a high school kid is able to do the things he does developing. Rohan your the man. I sit back and watch all the drama on here and accept it because its the nature of the beast. I made a post, humorously mentioning my situation and asking for everyone in my forums advice on next purchase and new HTC phone. Some guy posts something that offended me, a flame, and other members called him on being an idiot as the only motivation was just to be an ass. I responded basically taking his exact comment and applying it to him. I get infraction. I get my thread moved, but can't find it. There is no record of it in my statistics.
I know modding this site can't be easy, but half this crap is caused by some of them. I guarantee somehow this mod got involved and did not read entire thread or knows the other member. I donate a lot and often, and this sites mods have put such a bad taste in my mouth I'll just give more to TEAM KANG and no more here.
And to the one mod whose name I can't remember but helped me with an issue in the past, I apologize I don't remember your name, because you truly were helpful, I wish all these guys followed your lead.

Sir, I understand your thoughts and if there is an issue with members the main course of action is to use the report button. And Sir if there is something you feel an issue that needs to be brought to XDA's attention regarding Moderations. The above link is provided and well established on the portal page, Thank You and Thread Closed.
