Ok so here is my idea,
I have noticed a lot of people like to use hosting company like Megaupload and rapidshare, which to I have noticed has it's draw backs on waiting times etc..
So what i propose is to setup an FTP server for all developers on the XDA community such as:
duttythroy
shogunmark
Confused Stu's
ryncppr
sakajati
Laurentius26
(Sorry if I missed anybody out but of course you are included)
Each user would have there own space on the ftp server to upload there rom's/tools they wish to share with the xda-dev community, which they could link directly too there own threads to make it easier for people to download.
Supported by donations I would be happy to keep this server running permanently for everyone to use.
Also if you have any other suggestions I would be happy to hear them.
Let me know what you think as if I get enough positive responses it would be a project I would be happy to pursue.
Thats fine, so long as you:
1. Can get a server in a country which doesn't respect Microsoft's Copyright. I believe XDA had an FTP before which was shut down
2. Have multi-gigabit connectivity. Think just of the Kaiser board and imagine a few hundred people all downloading the latest Dutty or L26 ROM at about 100MB a go. Now multiply that up by all the boards at XDA-D, all the Roms and all the users.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not deliberately pissing on your campfire but there are reasons things are as they are.
TM
Hi
Thanks for your reply, i had already thought of banwidth issues plus the copyright implications from M$, i am currently looking at different hosting company's which may be able to provide me with what i/we require.
Don't worry about pissing on my campfire, i have a nack for working out issues like these.
As a matter of couriosity can you remember why the xda ftp was shut down?
I think as above 'I believe XDA had an FTP before which was shut down'... due to the server having multiple images and files of MS based software.

The idea is good brother, but its unlikly to happend due legal issues. What you should do is sit down and collect all urls to all rom and compile a nice tread that you can daily update whit links on the diffrent chefs. That will go straight on the stickies (should go that is), woulda done it myself but I am to occupied trying to learn to cook
good idea one source - all of the files

Yes, it is true, read the annoucement on top of the threads.
This means, no more hosting for the ROMs (released ones of ones created by us) this is a BIG loss as it's always a pain in the neck to great any ROM and will push ROM creation into the illegal zone
I will make my prophet ROMs available somewhere else, details will follow later.
ps.
yes i'm back, hopefully with a new ROM soon, I had to deal with a lot of personal crap, but i'm back again.
hi Jesterz,
welcome back! We missed you!

Yeah wellcome back This is good news...
As for "Microsoft's choice".... hope they burn in hell lol well in my perspective they're just trying to finish off those dedicate persons like Jesterz that are working hard to correct Microsoft's software defects...
Hopefully we can all learn from this as I think M$ just reacted to Carrier induced pressure due to lots and lots of customer complaints of bricked devices due to failure to understand ROM upgrade procedures... So please if you are reading this and don't have a clue of how upgrade procedures work, either, don't complain and deal with your bricked device (in a worst case scenario) or don't upgrade at all.
It's a shame
These guys from Redmond shoul learn to respect the work of theyr customers.
We make it possible that they get theyr monthly payment.
I hope we find a way to share our roms and tools any other way.
Any ideas yet?
I'll pray for us.

Yeah.. it's pretty retarded... The only bloody reason I bought an HTC device is cause I knew I could flash the rom for newer AKUs and fixes and stuff... I should've just waited for the damn iPhone.. lol....
http://www.petitiononline.com/xdadevs/petition.html
What the panic is all about?
I don't get it why you all surrender to this Redmond threats.
Usenets have been around for decades. I am a regular user of Usenets from '95 and I can tell you that their strong arm didn't and probably won't reach there.
Why not simply post your valuable stuff there and leave our cherrished forum clean of any files whatsoever?
Just post to alt.binaries.warez.pocketpc and by the way the kind of stuff we find there is really lacking the quality we got here so the newsgroup might just improve that way.
What do you think?
It's so sad to see how MS is dealing with this situation. I have owned PPC's for some time know, and not until I started having problems first with my universal and recently with my prophet that I got into this community. This web site is the best thing that has happened to MS and HTC. I have singed Jester's petition to MS. I know that if this happens I shall go to PALM o iPhone. THIS SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It is sad indeed...
At least the good news is that you're back... so welcome back Jesterz
History teaches us nothing.
It is not by taking the ROM archive dowm that MS can stop ROMs from going around!
Why don't they simply try to release ROMs that WOULD NOT require any interventions from the final user instead.
Looks like the "prohibitionism" has taught these guys nothing at all.
i suggest we can use http://www.mydatabus.com host to share our roms. (up to 5 G space pro person and stable).
Rapidshare, megaupload, uploading...etc are not good solutions for us to download and exchange file. Because it will be deleted in limited times.

type "RUU_Prophet_220734_2207114_024721_QtekWWE_Ship.exe" in google...
We demand our freedom
I came into this forum a couple of weeks back with a bricked prophet G4 & a O2 XDA Exec(UK). Since then not only i have been able to restore my prophet ,I have been able to learn a lot abt PPC as a whole. Its a shame that M$ feels thereatened by this forum as we have done nothing wrong except to give people choice!!! Isn't it our right to choose & develop??? Who's MS to stop us?? Where were they whan I was running from pillar to post to get my bricked prophet running....
hi to all
i would like to say that: i finally ported a real build after getting some instructions in porting the roms from a device to another.
the good thing is that i fixed the known issues about the phone, like if you call a busy number you will get busy tone and the phone shows busy instead of showing connected , also when you recieve a waiting call and you didn't answere that you get missed call instead of recieved call, these things will know them if you use any other builds like 1437, 1620 and 318(the official one).
all my roms cooked using old builds because of these issues, thats why i started working and learning about porting. (i will never use any other cooks like 1437 or 1620 and you know for that with the releasing)
the new build will be exclusivly for TNT users (no need for write the causes)
the new TNT (5.0) will be released in 10 days (i hope )
So you don't plan on releasing this in a kitchen?
If not the title is misleading, because it is not 'good news for all wizard users'. It would only be good news for the people who use your rom, which would be a small percentage of all wizard users.
Please release this in a kitchen so the fixes will reach more people, whether it is through people creating their own rom or using a cooks rom who used your kitchen.

sorry for writing for all users and i will change it right now.
about share the kitchen, i'm so sorry for that because there are many and many of people (especially come of cookers) i saw they didn't credit their cooks to the base rom chef, this thing sure will make the porter to stop porting and maybe encrypt that (like i will do), this doesn't mean all cookers, there are many credit their base rom to his cooker like mfrazz.

FANTASTIC News!!!! I hope you use the compressed and tested Office 2007 so we can get goodies like BT DUN along with Internet Sharing in the roms. I think including the PP change files would solve alot of the "gotta upload 5 different PP versions" and ease your distrobution headaches.
I personally dont care for the "touch" look at all. Its Flat and lifeless. I use programs I paid for such as Ilauncher, Pocket Breeze, and Resco for my Today layout.
I do like the touch scrolling but thats about it.
I do wish there was a way of including the WeatherPanel & WP-Pilot, but its rather large with all the added icons, unless we boot out defaults and just include the chameleon-240 and Yahoo weather icons aka making those the defaults.
I love your roms, great selection of included apps.
Waiting with baited breath,

this thing will kill the extractor efforts to do any new working
these thing will never be full understaing till you see someone used your works w/o credits, for example dr.yar and winxplore i never saw them on any rom, i did the package and of course i lost a lot of time to looking for usefull apps, finally you will see other people used them as he did it himself.
Thank you, its right!
You make excellent ROMs and I am looking forward to this next one!
@its right, many people who gives credit i think should be allowed via PMs, i say. I mean if we don't share then basically there will be no community. I'd say can you can give kitchen to ppl who gives out credit like mfraaz, myself and alot others. As far as i go, i don't release my cook anymore because alot of other pros like you and mfrazz have em out. I keep it for myself because of the appz i like in there. Anyways do take in consideration.
Perhaps those whose work has been stolen or used without permission could address offending members via PM. Alternatively those whose work was stolen or used without permission might like to consider publicly naming and shaming the offenders.
Watermarking your work is another method that may reduce the incidence of stolen work. Furthermore when members release something perhaps they could advise that permission needs to be granted before incorporating their work into other projects. I suppose at the height of anti-pirating measures and also at the height of complexity remains the incorporation of activation codes, but I'd hope this forum never degrades to the point of needing this counter-measure.
I'm not going to remind you all that most of the information associated with your devices and their operating systems should be freely available and distributed information. Well....not yet anyway.
@its right
All the best and Good Luck with your release

Its not anti-piracy. The people that release these roms hold no copyright in them whatsoever.
I think people should release stuff to the community with the expectation that it will be used and re-used if it is worth it (like mUn's releases). People expecting credit for software they did not write are releasing for the wrong reasons.
Microsoft and HTC own most of the copyrights, yet people want credit for ripping off their software.
There are a few people around here who wrote tools and developed the methods that are used for dumping and porting roms. Most all other 'cooks' do nothing but use these tools and methods, create a few OEM packages, and change a few registry entries.
EDIT: I'll stop posting now and let this thread serve its original purpose.

Sorry for saying this but not releasing the kitchen because of not giving credits is bull ****, why?? if only 1 freak don't give credit's to witherat is not a reason not to releae a kitchen . I don't see you give credit to microsoft for suppling you the rom what will they say???
But nice work if you do it and will release it.

Excellent. I am a happy user of TNT 4.0 (because of most of other ROMs having problems with registering missed calls properly when data connection is active).
Thank you for the great work.
IMHO it would be good to release the all info for community (there will be always people stealing other people work, it is just reality), but if you do not want to do it, I understand...
Being quite happy with TNT, I do not need kitchen personally.
Mirek
This is turning into the PSP community in which the latest custom firmware (similar to the ROMs here) was encrypted and had a check placed to brick the PSP of anyone that went to a specific website which had stolen work in the past - no one deserves a bricked device and it won't be long before the attitude here will be the same...
can't wait for this release.... TNT 4 is clearly one of the best ROMs out there.
I'll state first I don't agree with the whole "I'm not gonna share because you might not give me credit" however since he did all the work porting it, then really he's free to do whatever he chooses.
That being said...don't most of the current kitchen's allow you to take a released rom and extract it directly to use as a base? Doesn't that make the whole "I'm not gonna release" issue moot?
*I have not cooked a rom so I'm asking based on posts I've read.*
Dear all,
I am in possession of a Kaiser and used some of the ROM's here. Now I am not a chef and prefer spending my time on other stuff. However I felled obliged giving a bit back.
Now I had an unused torrent-tracker on my website/server and was waiting to find something to put it to good use.
I am presenting a link to this Torrent-tracker for Firmwares/ROM's(if needed also some necessary CAB's).
http://tracker.homeip.net/tracker/
On the page there is a link/download for the client Utorrent v1.6.1 build 490. There is also a website(www.utorrent.com) with a way higher version, there is however some difference in opinion about versions above the v1.6.1 b490(discussions off topic).
This is however a test and will in the future depending more on the chefs willingness creating and uploading the .torrent and keeping secrets or sending me the ROM's and letting me do the work.
I will 1st put my effort in the Kaiser forum but if this idea is popular enough and requests will come in I will move a level up making the tracker available for the other forums with their ROM's.
I have already made a start with some of the popular ROM's and I will add more and more over time and naturally on request.
It will save a lot of time searching upload websites.
Reactions are welcome good or bad
For the Chefs:
Dear hardworking freaks if you like this idea and want to join this project take a short look at the following ways of sharing your hard work with all the other freaks.
1)- 1 have setup an FTP server and upload account for the Chefs. PM me for the link, user name and password.(all you have to do is upload your next ROM and I will do the rest)
2)- It is possible to upload the torrent to the tracker by your self. Again PM me for the link, user name and password.(you will have to create the TORRENT, upload it and share it.)
good thought, but
I like the good idea, but think that members will still want to download from the chef's website. Reason being, the chef's website will have a description and pics of their roms as well as easy updates & and discusion.
Additionally, the DL speed max'd at 24kbs, and the dl would have taken 45 minutes, versus the less than 5 minutes from the chef's choice of file server.
Again, I think this is a good idea, but without the army of seeders and a large following of members to dl the roms... good idea, but maybe not.
Great Idea!
Actually sounds a great idea in theory. Ive already tested out a torrent version for ppc but took too long.
The points STU makes are correct and I agree. I guess the idea would be great in theory and definately handy if using a TILT via WIFI. I found myself stuck without a PC / Laptop recently. I can imagine a scenario like this whereby the software COULD come in handy especially if the speed was acceptable on wifi.(lack of seeders to begin with?)
Good Luck and I for one would like to hear of how you get on with this project.
Best Wishes
Nick
@Stu_Can_Sam,
I welcome any argument and have to agree on some points like i am not sharing with a high upload. But you already pointed out the force/weakness of P2P-torrent is the many seeders.
For an idea that hardly started and placing judgment is a bit premature.
For any idea something can be good or bad after living it a couple of months not just after a day. Look at chefs cooking their ROM's, at 1st they are not always great but using the forum and people adding positive feedback makes their ROM's really great after a couple of versions.
So give it some time, people have to know it and getting used to the idea, and reading around in this community i guess people are not just "hit and runners" and will share their downloaded stuff way longer. We are not talking about movies of 4GB here so storage is surely not an option.
Very interesting....
I hear and feel what the others have said, but this could also serve as a way for others to "see" what others are using and potentially help to eliminate all the "What Rom are you using?/What Rom is best?/Who is the best Chef?/What Radio is best?/etc...." threads that keep popping up and polluting the forum. It could also potentially serve as the "perfect" alternative for all those that complain that they cannot use 1 file sharing service or another for X reason.
Of course, as with any torrent-based d/l, the overall speed would be determined by the seeders, but for some of us, this would be a great way to assist with information sharing. I myself have 5 PC's at home that serve as a mini farm when i am not at home or during the wee hours of the morning, when the network traffic in my area is lowest.
The only major downside that I could potentially see is that here in the states, more and more ISPs are moving toward bandwidth caps and penalizing those who go over their limits. I should know as I work for one. If a ROM were to become REAL popular, then i could see where this would get sticky, but other than that I would see no long term problem.
What I would suggest is adding a link back to the particular thread or post that the ROM originated from so that users can see what they are downloading or find out what is included in each ROM, with a heading of "Technical support and FAQs found here..." or something similar.
That's enough from this peanut gallery... NEXT!!!!
I've created a new high performance hosting site for WinMo and Android custom roms. It is still however in beta but I expect that it will be finalised before the end of June
The servers (Yes I mean that in plural ) that are being used are located in Dublin, Ireland (My hometown) so as to ensure brilliant speeds for both the US and EU. This service is of course free however there are certain rules that must be followed to preserve the integrity of the site. For example, I will not be allowing full scale discussion like here on XDA to make it easier for people to navigate ROMs.
In any case, when you host a ROM on my infrastructure you get both regular HTTP download and bittorrent download as a backup so your ROMs will always be available. No more rapidshare! Devs get unlimited space for their ROMs and those with more than five distinct ROMs get their own subforum to release their ROMs on. Again, I would like to stress that the primary aim of this site will not be ROM development as is XDA or MoDaCo but it's aim is to be sooner or later the comprehensive database for custom ROMs on both Android and Windows Mobile.
In any case, the site's URL is http://www.smartroms.com I hope you do find it useful, if you encounter any bugs or the like please send me a pm and I will look into it

Can you let me know if the registration page redirects you correctly? I noticed a few times that it kept hanging on redirecting during testing but it disappeared after I made a few seemingly irrelevant code changes.
Anyways, give me feedback!
It redirected me fine. The only tiny thing I'd say is that once you register and you are redirected to the login page, instead of your username being pre-filled, it puts your email address in.
Some less 'savvy' people might stumble on that and wonder why they can't log in.
As I say it's no biggy but you know what some users are like

that's really bad... for a hosting site
I've been working all night migrating the server to vBulletin instead of the phpbb system it is now. That's why it's slowing down from time to time. I thought it would be safer to work through the night as less people would be accessing the site but I suppose I thought wrong
In any case the site is hosted across multiple servers for performance and redundancy reasons so when the site is finalised there should never be any speed issues.
As I typed this thread title I saw there's been two other posts in the last month or so about this, but oh well.
I've been hosting many various ROM's and kitchens for other phones for 7 or 8 months now. I know there's quite a big Hero following as well, so I just thought I'd throw it out there if anyone would like to host their files on my site instead of MultiUpload junk.
Anyways, site's in the sig, my email addy to get upload access is on the site. The whole site is setup just for hosting rom's. Uploading is really simple, etc. Plenty of speed (I max out my 30mbps connection at home whenever I download something from it myself), plenty of space, etc.
Mods: This isn't an advertisement for a site that would compete with XDA, it's solely a file host. I've already had approval in other phone sections. Just an FYI.

I'm betting if the email address is to his host then its because the DNS changes havent went into effect fully..
Yeah that's probably correct. I just moved to a better host over the weekend, so it's possible some smaller ISP's or mail servers still don't have the updated DNS records I suppose. If you want upload permissions feel free to send me a PM instead for the time being.
Whoops, nope, I broke my mail server when I changed a few settings yesterday apparently, and didn't realize it! lol... fixed now.
