Outlook Issue - General Topics

I tried to search for this but really didn't know what to even search for.
I've hard reset my phone twice after adding and deleting lots of apps while trying to find my favs. Both times I've used the Sprite Backup that came with my phone (ATT Tilt) and both times I've had to set up a new Oulook account for my Gmail. This isn't really an issue, just a pain.
What is an issue is that it won't allow me to reuse the Account Name. Not to big a deal, I just don't like having to come up with a new name every time. Is there a way to delete the old names somewhere? Are they in the registry somewhere?
Sorry if this has been asked before, I've just never seen it in the 3 months I've been following this forum and had no luck finding it myself.

I'll be the first to tackle this, but need some clarification on it. You hard reset then do a restore using sprite? Or you hard reset and then restore only the apps? Any extra information would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry, yeah, backup "My Documents, Email, and Personal Databases" with Sprite backup. Hard Reset, Restore from backup, then reinstall all apps. Both times it hasn't actually restored my email account so I've had to do it manually, but when I click "New E-Mail Account" and go through the steps, I get a warning screen that says "That name is already assigned to another account. Enter a unique name and try again". Is it possible it only half restores, putting some type of info file somewhere but not actually listing it under "Messaging" screen.
The last time it also didn't back up my contacts, had to get those through ActiveSync from Outlook on my PC. Needless to say, I don't think I'll rely on Sprite again.

By doing the backup and then restoring you are allowing some previous settings from your device to be redone. This is usually good in the big picture of things, but when it comes to email, by restoring even a little bit, it will recognize that account. I never back up my email, unless I do it via outlook on a daily basis and such. By doing that I can restore it to outlook if it crashes or if I need something from the past that I had deleted. I wish I could give you some good news and say it shouldn't happen, but it does. Try only backing up everything but your email accounts. Also what device are you using. Some have quirks that others don't.

I thought that might be it. Too bad I just did it and don't feel like reinstalling and getting my settings the way I like em. Its the ATT Tilt, don't know if that really matters.

Just remember it when you go to do it next time.
I was wondering about the device, because older PPC/Phones had different issues with backup and restore. It seems a lot better now in our techno world we live in.

Help: Phantom e-mail account after Sprite restore

My AT&T Fuze display broke the other day. I managed to use MyMobiler to access the phone and back up (using Sprite Backup), and restore the backup on the new phone. The restore worked great, however, I now have a e-mail account on my e-mail tab that I cannot access to remove. If I go to my accounts, the account is not listed, so I cannot delete it. I also cannot access the inbox of the account.
Does anyone know how to remove this phantom account. It is a file or registry setting?
Thanks!

There is always a "phantom" one there, it is for outlook.
P.S. Good job with the my mobiler, you obviously searched unlike most noobs.
Welcome to XDA
You can get rid of it on your tf3d by connecting to you're computer via active sync, and unchecking the email box for what to sync.
I may not have explained this properly.
I am not referring to the Outlook default mail account.
On my old Fuze, I had an account setup to get my GMail. This worked great. When I backed up and restored on my new Fuze, this GMail account was still listed on the Mail tab, but I am unable to open the mailbox and this account is no longer listed under my mail accounts.
Any suggestions?
I've got the same issue. My 1st fuze got swapped out for a power issue it had. Did a full backup and restore with Sprite. The restore did NOT setup my alternate IMAP gmail accounts I had configured on the 1st one ... but I have the ghosts of them in TF3D tab. I can see all the accounts, and even flick through the email that was on the original unit at the time of the backup.
I've setup the accounts manually again, but now I have duplicate account appearances on the TF3D screen.
I tried reinstalling the Manila cab.
Tried removing, rebooting and re-adding the Email tab with Diamond TF3D config too. No effect.
Can't find any specific references in the registry for the email tab.
I posted a thread here too last week. Got one hit on it.

You need to delete cemail.vol. The file is locked while the phone is on, so you'll need to use Mortscript to delete it on boot.

Perfect!
Thanks for the point in the right direction!
I'm shocked that everyone is going through such effort to solve this problem when there's a program on the Sprite back up site that fixes the issue.

Though the article states it will delete all data, it didn't on my device. I was able to see my ghost IMAP account that would show up on the TF3D tab, but not in the messaging app itself.
I also use an AT&T Fuze
uh. . . maybe because no one Knew about it?
Thanks for the Link.
I have the same exact issue.. except I am using Sbp Backup ... but I think I'll try deleting the cemail.vol
I was also having a problem with 2 phantom email accounts in TF2D email tab after a backup - they were not shown in the accounts menu.
I used SKTools (Full Version) to scan all PIM information (actual heading 'Delete PIM information') which showed all accounts - highlight the phantom account/s, and then select 'delete account' from the action button.
All fixed - thanks all for the push in the right direction.
I am having the same phantom gmail account from a sprite backup on the fuze after getting rid of att bloat. I wish there was an easier way.
There is an easier way
Unzip the attached file to your device and run it. It will enumerate all accounts, even the hidden ones. You can choose to delete them or change settings. Whatever you need.
Hope this helps!
not working for me
Not sure what I am missing, but I see no option for deleting an account, only Repair, from the Feb 3 09 mailAccountRepair attachment. When the "busy circle" starts after selecting Repair, it does not finish (at least in 30 sec). Whether I Quit or not before soft reset, no changes are present. Any help appreciated.
HTC Touch Pro (Sprint), ROM 1.03, Nov 2008
Yes, please help. I have my work outlook (activesync) account that I want on there. I have to other email accounts (ie pop) that I want to delete and I can find no way to do it. HTC Touch Pro.
Thanks!
I had the same issue you're having, after exchanging my first Fuze out due to a problematic screen. When I restored the backup on to my new Fuze, I had the same ghost accounts. What I simply did was a hard reset, then when I ran Sprite I deselected the box that restores backed up emails. The restore went without a hitch, then I went into outlook and simply recreated my email accounts. After a couple minutes, I had all the email back.
Easiest way? Prolly not, but it worked for me.

Please help, I have a TouchPro sync/transfer issue

Hi guys,
Basically I am trying to selectively restore my Boss' Touch Pro, I just want to get the email settings and e-mails across to the new phone he has. I have searched through the registry and the files trying to find where the account settings are held but alas I have had no luck. Does anyone have this nugget of information?
I need to transfer the actual emails and the e-mail account settings.
Use PIM backup to get the e-mails easily (also will get contacts, speed dials, txts etc etc - but you can select what to backup / restore)
E-mail account settings can be dragged out of registry Like this But what e-mail settings do you need? normally things like that are easier to just re-input if its only a 1 off occurence.
A quick look through the mail account settings should give you all the login info you need (except the password)
ok, thats cool, I reckon I can handle that. I actually want any and all e-mail settings because the amount that my boss wants me to install new roms for him to try out means that I don't want to keep re-inputting his details into the phone. I would ideally want all information in sepperate restorable cabs or reg entries. problem with the backup software I am using is that it takes all of the software as well, so when I restore it to a newly flashed phone it restores all the crap from the previous phone...tre frustrating.
and yeah, this is a strange problem, I personally stick with a single firmware instead of jumping about...but I'm not the boss
If you're gonna be flashing roms, check out UC (in the hacking thread) or shashmi. Both should let you personalise the "post flash" install so you get the device back to how you like it quickly & easily.

How can I remove a phantom email account?

I updated my FUZE to the new ROM. Before doing that I used Sprite to backup everything except for System Data (and my memory card).
After the update I used Sprite to restore everything. Among that was the contents of my imap email account. However when I went into the Inbox, there was no email account so I could not open or access of the old messages that I can scroll through on the email page. I tried to create an email account but it told me there was already an account with that name (it seems like there is, but I can't access it).
I did a master reboot to clear everything out and before I restored from Sprite, I created the email account again. But when I did the restore, the same thing happened as before.
I know I can deselect email in the restore options but doing that means that it doesn't restore any SMS/MMS messages which I want.
Where is the email account data? Somewhere in the registry? If so, where? After I do a restore, would it be safe for me to find that account data and delete it so I can create it for real? I don't want to keep any of that old email.
Thanks.
Well here's what you should do. Restore your Sprite backup.
Download and install "PIMBackup" and do a full backup with it.
Go into the registry and delete the email account from HKLM/Software/Microsoft/Inbox
Reboot
Check your Message app to see if the email account is gone. Set it back up.
Restore your stuff from PIMBackup. Ditch Sprite
Sprite backups are great but restore lots of stuff. Sprite has the ability to restore bugs and bad registry keys. PIMBackup JUST backs up the information therefore it is the best and even works across multiple flashes without screwing anything up. I actually set up an XML file to load on first boot using UC (most custom roms use this) that sets up my Email account automatically, then a simple PIMBackup restores everything back.

Maybe a little excessive! but Player is right, Sprite is no good for restoring after flashing a new rom (use pimbackup).
Sprite is great for backing everything up, hard reset, restore - exactly the same so its great for trying new settings, software etc etc.
I didn't want to confuse anything here but I actually did use PIM (I've used it for regular backups and migration for over a year). I used it before using Sprite. But after doing a restore, my device became EXTREMELY slow, to the point where it took roughly 5-10 seconds to open up a single txt msg. So I did a master reset and then did a restore from Sprite (which is what brought me here).
If I restore from Sprite again (and it will give me that phantom email again), think I can just delete the reg key? Would it delete the contents of this invisible Inbox? Should it have any negative effects?
Thanks.
Can you delete the reg key - yep!
will this remove the contents of the ghost account - i dont think so, but the account wont exist, so you shouldnt be able to get to these messages
Any negative effects? - almost certainly! but not from removing the spurious reg key. Using sprite to backup, then changing the rom, then restoring sprite will almost always leave some annoying, odd or unusual behaviour. Simply because when you changed the rom, you changed (a few) what reg keys are required and what they are called (mail accounts generate a unique guid when you create them, which is where the ghost account has probably come from)
Restoring a pim backup avoids this, as it simply puts the database info back on - leaving windows to worry about reg keys etc - i'm not sure why it was so slow before, maybe trying again & a couple of soft reboots could help - or maybe the pim backup is screwy, try making a new one.
Good luck!
FWIW, when I updated the ROM I did as the HTC website instructions say and did not choose to backup any system data in Sprite (they say this avoids copying the registry).
So anyway, what will delete the contents of the ghost account?
Or maybe I'm thinking about this the wrong way - maybe instead of deleting the contents of that ghost account, would I be able to create a new account through the registry? Or rename a (real/functional) account in the registry? (when I have the ghost account and try to create an account with the same name normally, it tells me the account exists...even though it kinda doesn't)
I think the problem I am having with PIM seems to be too many message. I say this because the number of messages goes up for a long time and that's when it takes forever to load messages. I found that it settles down after a few hours but even then it still takes about 2-3 seconds to open a single txt msg.
Thanks.

any way to prtevent activesync from eating contacts?

hope this is in the right place here...
so, this weekend i finally managed to sync my contacts list into oblivion. thank you very much, activesync.
what i did is, i reinstalled my desktop system, which i do more or less regularly to keep it lean. some time ago i bought outlook 2007, specifically to have a backup in case i lost my phone (touch hd) or something. now after i had setup the new installation of win7 rc and wanted to sync, it wouldn't. apparently, the last activesync partnership was in the way. so, what else to do, but end the former partnership (and please do tell me, if i'm wrong here!). i was greeted with a warning telling me "if i continue, all data synced FROM that partner source" (don't know the exact text, i interpreted this from the German text) will be deleted. i didn't see any alternative (like telling stupid activesync to keep them, just end the partnership, again please tell me when there is such an option somewhere), thought "OK, the original source for the contacts was the phone, not outlook" and continued. afterwards, my contact list was empty except for 10 contacts that wouldn't sync in the first place.
question 1 is: why the heck do they have to make these sync solutions so reliant on automatisms and eager to simply delete stuff? and then not include, or hide really good, options to prevent this? mobile center only allows to set who has priority to overwrite in case of conflict, activesync on WinMo has even less options. why can't they make them ask what exactly to do when they find discrepancies or conflicts, preferrably for each single case? frankly, i find this whole automatism business (in general, not only activesync) patronizing and dangerous if you don't pay close attention. i was wary, and still managed to delete my contacts. great!
i know, this is a rhetorical question, but i had to let off some steam...
now for more immidiate things:
is there a way to prevent this from happening via obscure options? i know i should have used something like pimbackup or at least made a copy of the pim.vol (which has its own difficulties), but you're always wiser afterwards.
speaking of the pim.vol file, is there a way to read that out by now? apparently the deleted contacts are still in there between a gazillion lines of symbols and i already rescued some, but this will take ages skimming through with a text-editor. i know someone wrote a perl script to parse the file, but that's beyond my competence.
and lastly, about those 10 contacts that were spared. those simply refused to sync towards desktop outlook. after each sync, i just got a message telling me he couldn't sync those. any ideas why, or what might be going on there? all of them have pictures, one or two phone numbers, and some have birthdays, nothing else. i think all or most of them had the pictures attributed from the album while zooming in, but i think so had others. some of the original photos are still there, some have been deleted by now, so i guess that's not the reason either.
any help would be much appreciated!
cheers,
mo
a good practice is to backup outlook on the pc
export to pst file include everything

[Q] Any way of backing up JUST Accounts and Sync?

I flash a sh*t ton of roms, and a problem I revisit every once in a while, is the apparent inability to backup/restore JUST the stuff in Accounts and Sync, and settings of those accounts. I'm sure I'm not alone when I say it sucks to have to re-enter 15+ different account names/passwords/etc every time I flash a rom(which is quite frequently), So why is it when I search for a solution, I find responses that belong over in an Apple Discussions forum(aka no solutions, just rhetoric).
To backup/restore my Apps and App settings, I use RomToolBox Pro>App Manager>Backup app + data + market links. This works very well, and saves a lot of time, as opposed to restoring from the market, and still needing to go back in and set up the apps. I can backup/restore individual apps, with or without the settings. I can't help but think a backup solution similar to this, only for accounts, must be out there.
There is an option in RomToolBox Pro>App Manager>Backup misc.data to backup Accounts, but I've never gotten it to work worth a ****. I've seen several forums over the years with people asking this same question, and being told that Titanium Backup can backup the Accounts and Sync Settings, but no one ever bothers to explain any further.
Though I can't remember the last time I was without root access, a plus would be to find a solution that didn't require it. Thanks for any help, And I hope if you're reading this years from now, this is the end of your fruitless search.
