Favorite calculator? - General Topics

I guess I'm getting older than I realized. When I was in school there were scientific calculators and adding machines... both allowed to do long calculations with reasonable ease but it in different ways. Now there is a third class... pathetically cheap calculators, which unfortunately seems to be the class of calculator that comes on these devices. Maybe I was just somehow never aware of these because.. well they are bad?
All I want is a calculator that when given
2+4/2=
replies with the number 4, not 3. If you don't understand why then never mind. I don't need trig. I don't need calculus or hex or lots of memories... I just want it to know that it should divide and multiply before adding and subtracting. This is programatically not even as hard as it first seems... not that it even seems hard, and it allows to do long arithmetic calculations without needing to stop to write stuff down or start over or deal with memories just becuase you ran into a fraction somewhere.
So there seem to be several "scientific" calculators programs out there, does anyone have a favorite?
I don't want alot of screen space wasted with advanced features (although i don't mind them if screen real estate is somehow cleverly managed)... I just want to be able to do basic arithmetic in a reasonable way.

Use 1-calc Bro, It Works Just Like That 2+4/2=4

I found MyCalculator. It is free. It is simple. It does math correctly. It has an unusually easy way of doing memory/recall which is good, because on the downside you must use the memories to operate on the last answer. The keys aren't huge, but still thumbable. There is still room for me to find a more perfect solution, but this one will work quite well for me.

I use HiCalc. It is not free and it's not cheap, but it is really great calculator if you need something that you can call scientific. In new version you can change between different calculator pages with left/right gestures. You can even see how would your equation look like if it was written on the paper.
If you need something more advanced (like 2D/3D graphing, advanced equations...) you can try SpaceTime.

Scientific Calculator

Hi.
I study Telecomunications Engineering and I need to have a sicentific calculator like Hp 59g ot 48, or aTexas Instrument Model like those, to make some subjects abaut calculate or algebra...
I´m looking for a software to emulate this calculators, but I can´t find anything.. Could anybody tell me something abaut?

Here's one: http://www.calculator.org/download.html
Here's more: http://www.freewareppc.com/calculator/calculator.shtml
Make sure you have a pop-up blocker installed.
i just use the same hp48 emulator that i use as calculator for my normal pc
http://www.pocketpcfreewares.com/en/index.php?soft=307
could try 1-calc from omegaone, but it is resource hungry and takes large amounts of memory (about 8 meg I think). I rarely use it, but you can guarantee the time when i dont have something like that is the time that I am going to need it.

Absolutely FANTASTIC piece of software!!!
Version 1.9 is currently available for $30 and you can try a 15 day trial of it. Soon, version 2.0 will be released (it was meant to become available in December, grr!), that will be $40.
I'm sure that whatever you want it for, it will do it. As far as I can tell, it lacks no functions from my standard scientific calculator, and introduces more than I can concieve uses for!
..my favourite part is the 3D graphing technology
Ahap.
I saw the first links, and I don´t think they could help me...
I want something to operate with matrix calculate, memory for introduce transform formulas (as Laplace Transform...) integration, 2d and 3d representation, complex mode...
I´m going to see the other links right now and then I write you something...
thanks 4 all

Try Virtual TI, it's an emulator for the Texas Instruments Calculators.
If you google a bit you can find the ROMs needed, or if you have a TI at home you can download it from that one using a serial cable
Anyone have any luck getting a ti emu on WM200x? I sure could use it!!!
EDIT
I had some luck, I'll try it out and see (if i geta chance).

EDIT2
Here's a rom..... http://www.me.mtu.edu/~phlee/TI89/
I would like to try a ti83+ rom if someone has one/knows where one is.....
I'm gonna go play with this now and see how it is........
i used to do plenty of laplace and matrix calc on my hp48
so guess one can use the hp48 emulator i linked to
I use RDcalc v2.7A http://ravend.com/
Got it originally for use on IPAQ HX4700 WM2003, now use it on my XDA Exec WM5.
Added bonus was that it comes with a copy that you can use on the PC.
Lots of features.
no offense to rudger, but here is an sdk with the ti-83+ and a few other roms. Remember, you are violating copyright laws if you use a rom image of a calculator that you do not own!
http://education.ti.com/educationportal/appsdelivery/download/download.jsp
I haven't tried the other sci calcs. I know and like the TI83, so it's what i'm going with.... Good luck!
well once you go reverse polish notation you never look back
and you could get doom for the hp48
MyCalculator v1.0 is quite good scientific calculator indeed
I would have to go with richardkemp on this one. SpaceTime is, as he rightfully said, absolutely fantastic.
I'm on an acoustics course and I do plenty of logarithmic, comlex, calculus based operations on it and including amazing graphing capabilities. This is THE CALCULATOR you wanna have. (If you've tried this and found something better, do let me know too

Database with a difference

Hi Folks
What I'm after, and I'll pay if necessary, is a bit of database software for my PPC.
I'm hoping to create a database that would have a variety of information plus at least one image attached, possible more.
This database would consist of technical information and the image would be a pictoral representation of this (such as a picture showing the size of a machine in respect to its capabilities).
As an addition I'd like to be able to list the facts of each of these records in tabular format.
Once I've got a PPC piece of software I can then write up the database in it's PC equvilent.
On the PC I'd probably use MS Access as I have that installed.
Is this too complicated or would you like more information?
TIA
Elwyn
What about the WindowsCE version of SQLServer?
Edit: http://www.microsoft.com/sql/editions/sqlmobile/default.mspx
Thanks, installing it now Will let you know how it goes...
i work with alot of really big databases (24 million rows in the biggest) in my day job, tired a few PPC versions theres nothing decent that will work with 65k+ rows.
if you do a google on it there is articles and posts on various forums that talk about it.
only thing ill carry on the ppc is summarys of the stuff in the databases incase i need it in meetings and what not.
St3v3
Thanks for your information. The database would not have more than, ooh, at most, erm, 500 records.
Each record would probably be at most 20 fields per record with at least 1 image with possible more. I am glad in a way that I do not deal with such large databases though My job involves me being outdoors and outside and away from computers

User interfaces and your phone.

Hi all -
after buying a pocket pc (spv M3100) and playing around with the UI to get a Iphone like simplicity but with a bit of originality I was wondering what you guys use as a decent UI -
- is there any software you use to improve interaction - I'm on a Iphone clone/vista hybrid with wisbar advance, I'v tried RLtoday and Clauncg even Xperience but I cant find anything I fall in love with.
Clown fish are bugging me now - were all going to be bored of the Iphone before it released.
Let me know what you've got? - I'd be particularly interested if anyone uses a completely flash UI, or if they exist...
or what you want out of a decent user interface.
JJ McG.
Eh --
I value performance more than a polished GUI. WisBar Advance slows my device down too much ... as well as most other apps.
If I am in the car, and need to open my contacts to find someone's address, I don't want to wait 3-5 seconds more because of some dumb skinning program.
So you’re telling me you get your little stylus out every time you’re in your car and you need to get a contact? People crash because mobile phones distract them, so god knows what would happen if we all used styluses in our cars... I’m sure if it increased your survival rate whilst driving 3 or 4 seconds worth of loading time wouldn’t kill you, literally.
Or do you use your finger? In which case I'm sure you’ve opened the wrong program or mashed your touch screen activating 2 or 3 apps at once? Would you not prefer bigger buttons like an Iphone or a wisbar skin?
I opened this topic for discussion of this subject in the hope that I could maybe create a decent app that people actually want, not for sarcastic application bashing. Theres more to wisbar and Iphone than looks, its practical as well... do you not think.
Regards.
JJ McG.
SPB Mobile Shell is fairly fat finger friendly.

There have been some very good UI's posted across these forums.
From time to time I've thought Oh I like the look of that - I want it. But if I changed my UI every time I liked something I'd be forever dedicating time to it, because some of these methods aren't quick, i.e. the learning curve on Wisbar.
I will always commend people who make the effort for others to have something different on there phone rather than the bog standard interface, practicality does have to be a consideration as well...
It's whatever floats your boat at the end of the day.
For me I'm happy with my plethora of SPB products jamming up my screen, gives me everything I need and it looks nice too, IMHO.
If you Jonjamesm want to create something then crack on my friend, take a look round the forums and see some of the very nice UI's...
Form and functionality, just plain bling your the designer
smartskey I think hardware buttons are the way to go while driving (or voice rec). With green button, smartskey, you can quickly get to speed dials and call history.
The other big app I use while in the car is WMP, I assigned the IE button on my wizard to start WMP instead. Then the dpad and 2 softkeys can do about 99% of needed inputs. The only problems are:
-a couple functions in WMP require screen tap (library back button and ???)
-WMP forgets where I am at a lot

[Req] Scientific Calculator

Does anyone know of any good scientific calculator that doesn't give the result instantly, but rather allows one to enter an expression (equation) and gives the result only on pressing "="? So for instance I could enter a long expression like (-4+((14^2-4x23x12)^(1/2))/2x4) and it'd show that on the display, allow me to insert symbols/modify the expression and it'd compute only on pressing =/EXE. I've already tried Panaromic Calc and Pocket 15C but they both don't allow to enter expressions.
The calc should also be able to most solve common equations like linear, quadratic, matrices, etc. It needn't have graphing functions though.
If you've ever used a Casio FX series of calculators (fx-991ms or similar), you know what I'm looking for.
I was actually planning on making such a calculator myself, but why reinvent the wheel when there's something like that already? (if..)
I don't mind a j2me or online (javascript/flash) based calc either, so long as all the features and buttons are present.
Freeware preferred, but I don't mind paying for a good full featured program.
Thanks for your time.
Have you tried HiCalc?
the new Rhodium aka TouchPro2 Calculator has Sci Function

i STRONGLY suggest 1Calc or SpaceTime
Thanks a lot guys, HiCalc and 1Calc look good..
actually spacetime is CRAZY. can draw 3d plots.. bode, tf, inter/extrapolations... completely nuts.

You mean it's AWESOME if you're a maths major, for instance. Or engineering.
exactly
I use it pretty often
Dang, this was a nice find... i was just getting ready to look for a nice graphing calc.
btw: Your right Space Time will make you **** your pants
I was using PocketCAS for graphing but SpaceTime is like.. lightyears ahead! :O
toldja, it's koraizie

[Q] Livescribe Replacement App

Hello, I got my TF101 yesterday from Bestbuy, I also purchased the dock because what use would it be without lol.
My questions is, is there a way to emulate Livescribe functionality on the Transformer? I have spent the better part of an hour researching and looking but nothing truly fits the bill. Here is what I used and have tested.
Docs To Go. I used this on my OG droid and used it last night in class on my Galaxy Tab 7" with keyboard dock. DTG works well and is my default app.
Kingsoft Office is free and will be what I plan on transitioning to due to its enhanced UI and better features not to mention its free.
Extensive Notes allows me to either record notes or draw, but not both. This is a let down because my Art Appreciation teacher is constantly requiring us to draw examples for our notes.
Handrite Notes is another great app that does gets pretty close to my goal. While typing I am able to draw an image and it will downsize it, place it next in line of text, and allow me to keep typing. The problem here is that I am unable to go back and edit the drawing. If I make a mistake or the teacher goes and changes something I have to redraw everything.
I am ultimately looking for something as close to Livescribe as possible. I don't care if it costs. I want to be able to type my notes, draw on screen for math, art, geography, and record my teacher's lecture. I know this is a mighty bill to fit; however. I have found nothing to fully replace my pen and paper except for a tablet PC.
Perhaps something like OneNote would work?
