i have read the WIKI section about 5 time and i did everything correctly but when everytime i run the ruu but i keep getting this ? ERROR [202, 204] : CONNECTION
? This error message will appear when the device is not connected to ActiveSync correctly. Make sure
you properly connect the device to the PC through ActiveSync before running RUU.
but on my active sync screen the circle is green and i can sync everything else so i dont understand why it keep saying connection error

Try using a different USB port
i only have one port
Frustrating
I know you Senior Members have dealt with a lot of stuff that turns out to be user error, but as a 20 year IT professional, and someone who has flashed many ROM's, I am sure that I have followed all the instructions, my hardware is fine and connected properly. Is it possible that something has been changed on the newer phones that has not been seen and is not accounted for by the tools and methods that have been developed to date?
Have you tried manualy putting your device into the bootloader then running the RUU? You may also try reboot the PC and then the device and try it again.

If you're running Vista, run as admin.
I got that error before I ran as admin.

you could also flash with a microsd card. thats always how i flash so that i know that i don't screw anything up. now i'm not saying that it is foolproof, but IMO i think it is safer than flashing via PC.

With Vista and Windows Mobile Device Center 6.1, I don't bother with connection settings, I just right click the RUU, and either "run as admin" or to be totally sure, right click the RUU>properties>compatability>check the "run this program as admin" box near the bottom.
Never have had issues when I run as admin, and have flashed a more than a "few" ROM's.
Alemaker
Are you using the zip program built into windows? If so, STOP! You need to use Winzip or Winrar. Windows will corrupt the files!

*You put your phone in bootloader mode (3 color screen)
*Connected the USB cable and it said USB on the bottom of the screen
*Unpacked the rar file so that it is just a folder on the file system
* In the directory there should be 2 files a Kaiser_RUU.exe and the .nbh file
* Run Kaiser_RUU.exe what happens?

Im surprised I haven't seen anyone mention HardSPL.
Is HardSPL on your phone?
Just wondering since I see multiple people suggesting the SD Card method.

Guess we all assumed since he said he read the wiki 5 times and is saying he is getting connection errors. Normally when guys flash with no hardspl the flash goes thru then after reboot they are back the rom before the flash.

Make sure your phone is not connected before you enter bootloader. It should say serial at the bottom of the screen.
Now plug in your phone and serial should change to USB. Now run Kaiser_RUU.exe

OK lets start at the basics...... In bootloader mode (tricolour screen) what text does it say at top of the screen?
Have you DEFINITELY Sim Unlocked and CID unlocked?
it says these things
kais130 mfg
spl-10.0.Olipof
cpld-8
Ok that confirms you have the capability to flash. I have seen in the past some people have managed to flash one time only using jumpspl but then their device reverts back to original bootloader...I was one of those people
Next question then...Can you boot the phone normally and gain an activsync connection to it?
yes
i can use my phone normally
only i cannot put a new image in
Are you using Xp or vista? If using vista it may be worth trying a reboot... sometimes it goes doolally with its usb ports. If you cannot see the phone through WMDC or activsync after a reboot it is worth going to SYSTEM (on your PC) viewing non present devices through device manager,( Drop to Command prompt and type... Devmgmt.msc set DEVMGR_SHOW_NONPRESENT_DEVICES=1 ) removing the relevant phone connection and then re attaching it so that windows re detects it.
If you can get a connection via actvisync (win XP) or WMDC (vista) to your phone then all should be ok. Uncheck the activesync/ WMDC "allow USB connections" and try again.
If this still doesn't work then search around here for MTTY. That will allow you to specify the usb connection to the device...amongst other things.
thank you for your time
i have win xp and activesync works nice
the problem is when bootloader starts
When you attempt flashing, do you do it from the device already booted into windows mobile or direct from bootloader?
Which ever way you have tried it, try ther other way.
Not teaching you to suck eggs but just in case you dont know.... To get direct to bootloader hold camera button and soft reset with stylus whilst holding camera button down and the tri colour screen should appear.
With device at the bootloader screen, Can you confirm that you hear the windows "noise" when you unplug and re plug the USB cable just as you would when plugging and unplugging the device normally. This will determine if the device has connection at the bootlaoder stage.
why not just flash using the microsd card. its much easier that way
yes it has connection
the thing is that i have already flashed as i told before with dutty's v4
now i can't
Usually Error 260's are related to the USB port functionality ( Port can't be opened etc).
The SD card method or MTTY should sort you out.
thx again
hope it works
at least the sd trick worked!!!!
now running on winmob 6.1
Glad to hear you sorted it.

disable USB connections in ActiveSync and flash.
This Link gives a list of eror codes for Hermes, and probably the same for Kaiser.
It's likely that you have a USB port error - maybe try changing the USB port you use or a different sync cable - or just stick to SD card flashing in the future - I keep an old 1gig card for this.

OHHH lord dutty we need your new rom
Hey guys, I am trying to flash Dutty's newest rom, but im having some trouble...
When I double click the RUU.exe file, I put a check in the checkbox, hit continue. then put another check, hit continue, then I get an error saying:
"Error [200]: Invalid update tool"
"Please get newer update utility"
This is odd because I read on the Wikki that you get this error if you don't have HardSPL, but I do. In fact, I have flashed at least 4 or 5 different roms on this phone. Another thing is that my phone isnt in activesync mode, and for some reason when I try to install activesync (directly from microsoft's website and from the CD that came with my tilt) I get an error saying that it wont install... And another weird thing is that this never stopped it before, I have flashed a rom without it being in activesync with the computer...
When I tried to install Microsoft's activesync directly from their website, I double click the setup.msi file, and then it says :
"preparing installation..."
"The wizard was interrupted before Microsoft ActiveSync 4.5 could be completely installed.
Your system has not been modified. To complete installation at another time, please run setup again.
Click Finish to exit the wizard"
And this happens every time I try it... I have tried redownloading the file and I get the same issue... I even checked to see if maybe I downloaded the wrong version (like the vista version or something) but I downloaded the correct one.
Now, when I try to install activesync from the CD that came with my Tilt, I get an error saying that I need to update my Adobe Flash Player, So i click on the link that it gives me, and I updated it. Even though it is currently up to date, I STILL get this error every time I try, even after restarting my computer.
Any ideas?
put the phone in bootloader and tell me exactly what it says there.

After you put your phone in bootloader mode as P1 said, you will see something like this:
KAIS1*0

CPLD-8
Once you make a record of what is displayed, reply back with it.

Since you already have it in the boot loader just keep it there and try to flash it, see if you get any errors that way.
What version of Windows is on your computer?
If your running vista you need the mobile device center, not activesync.
Im using windows XP, I will try flashing while it is in bootloader, I edit my post once I see if it is successful or not.

which rom are you flashing your device with?
I am trying to flash Dutty's newest ROM, and right now Dutty's 3rd or 4th newest one is on my phone.
after you put your device in bootloader, and connected it to the pc, did the word "serial" change to "usb"? and were drivers loaded for the device? there should be a htc usb sync or microsoft usb sync in your device manager

You use google or XDA search via google. Try ROM flashing with Vista, etc...
Remember, there is a lot of valid data in Hermes forum as well
jjb, I had the same problem the other night on my home computer with XP. Luckily, I did not have the same problem with my work computer, also with xp. Something happended on the home computer to fcuk up the drivers (i'm guessing, as GSLEON pointed out). I had the same install issues with Activestinc. I had these issues in the past (at least 6 months ago) and was able to finally get Activestinc installed after rebooting multiple times. This time I only tried once before I waited to go back to the office and flash. I'm not sure what to do to rebuild(?) the drivers, but you might try a different computer. Also, my google search (for the 200 error) the other night pulled up a different web site that listed a lot of error codes and what they mean. I'm gonna try and figure out my driver issues with activstinc this weekend and I will post if successful.

My Dear Samaritans,
IMPORTANT:
- My SD/Memory card is removed
- My Sim card is removed
I was upgrading to Tomal v8.9 on a vista 64 system via a virtual machine XP SP2. Update failed and I got stuck in bootloader.
Tried reflashing but got an error and the flash failed... also the program crashed during recovery.
Tried using v8.71 still crashed without any luck.
Moved to a pure XP SP3 desktop...
When I connect the device to the computer(s) "Serial" changes to "USB" but XP sees it as an unrecognized device.
Tried flashing again but same error as on the virtual machine.
Tried mtty (1.16 & 1.42) but neither give me the option of USB, only COM1 and COM2. And had already de-activated the USB connection in Activesync.
Have read through the forum but have had no luck. Everyone's issue is resolved as soon as they remove their SD or SIM, but I have neither and am also using XP with activesync's USB disabled.
Tried UNI_ExitBootloader but that does not find/recognise the device either.
If it helps -- My device is/was an O2 XDA Exec (Stock) which I had previously flashed with Tomal's v8.5
I am ready to try anything, please help!
P.S: The error is Error 112
Did you install ActiveSync on xp pc?
If not, do it now and try again.
I had similar problem. Had corrupted DOC sector
and MTTY was the only solution, but although the Serial changed to USB, I got 'unrecognised' message and Mtty didn't give USB as an option. At some point it occured to me that it was my computer's USB port, for some reason the device was recognised by 1 in 4 ports only, So I just tried my USB cable in different ports until the 'device unrecognised' messaged stopped appearing. Finally, after I was ready to cry in frustration, it just worked. Don't give up.
I heard it mentioned somewhere that the device that went through Mtty will be recognised only by the port used in Mtty procedure.
That... or your device's USB is no longer properly attached to the mainboard.

Thank you for the ray of hope! Will keep trying every hourly reboot in every USB port (4 in all).
Weird thing is I never had to go through mtty before so this is my first need for it.

Don't worry
I had exactly the same problem. First I tried this and it worked but still no connection via mtty. On that evening I disconnected and connected a lot and I removed the battery for a long time (one night). Later I could connect but I don't know why. Maybe these two things were the solution. Mtty showed "usb>" and I've done a DOC format...
If nothing works I would create a rom-image (on sunday or monday) for your sd-card like it's written in the service manual.

No need for hourly reboots, just get into Bootloader, connect USB to your device and try different ports on computer with a few seconds in between to ensure no 'unrecognised device' message popping up. Once you'll get a connection - go for Mtty facility, the USB is the last on the list of ports.

Goos luck,
Can you Help?
I have an XDA II was on O2 uk network. I used to flash it all the time and knew my way around. however recently i flashed it in vista without thinking.. and as i upgraded the rom from wm2003 to wm2003se about 25% of the way through vista disconnected the device then it was unrecognised usb.. then vista started installing new drivers that recognised the device... however this then crashed flashing the rom onto the pda..
It wont soft or hard reset, i took the battery out for 24 hours and tried again and nothing.. the only thing on screen is that it says serial on the top of the screen (which changes to usb when connected but get error 101 when trying to reflash/ no activesync connection and am confused my mtty as when it does connect i cant type into the text area only paste)
on the bottom of the screen is v1.06 (which before the flash crash was V1.0 something lower than v1.06)
basicaly is the device recoverable as long as i have this serial / usb recognition by the device????? (using mtty i cant connect through ports or usb but thats because i dont seem to understand how to use it)
the other question is is there any other way to get a rom back onto the device without mtty or activesynch..
I pray that ysomeone will respond .. i miss my pda dearly
a thousand thanks in advance
Hello guys!
I've got a bit of a problem here, because now my mobile refuses to connect with activesync and therefore making it impossible to flash it.
I read the readme in the cid bypass folder, and didn't quite understand it, but as keen as I was on getting a new rom I did it all wrong.
I actually copied the cid bypass folder to my sd-card and ran haret.exe from the phone. A friendly penguin appeared along with some green text, and it rebooted and went black. I waited for a while, but had no patience so I rebooted it again. But after this it has been impossible to connect it with activesync! I've tried hard reset and different computers but nothing works!
I'm hoping someone on this forum can help me!
best regards
Try this.
turn your phone off and press the camera button in then plug it into the USB port
you should get a multi color screen. If you do then you can flash.
But go here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=330909
Go to where it says EDIT and follow what it says.
Oh and when a dos box opens up and ask you things just press the return key each time.
good luck
hey man, I tried reflashing the original rom to my vox, with the manualstyle sd card flash. So now it's flashed with the original rom, but still activesync doesn't work! anybody have an idea on how to make this right?
somebody tried running haret.exe from their phone, then flashing the Uspl with ruu flasher and then flash the new cooked rom?
My phone is not able to connect for flashing while in black state (after running harET), is it stupid of me to reboot it and start it by holding camera button while plugging it in to the computer? and then flash it with the ruu?
somebody please help me?
go into settings then connections then more till you see USB to PC
in there un-tick the box which says enable advaned network.

I am confused..is it working or not? one post you say it is but you cant sink..then you say its not.????
and dont use the flash off the mem stick..use windows..
ok, sorry for making confusing posts! I'm just excited about getting it to work.
So here's the situation:
From stock phone used with exchange (turned off the exchange part before doing anything)
1. I ran haret.exe from my phone, and it rebooted into a "black state" after which I rebooted it again
2. I tried to connect it to my computer using activesync, to be able to flash, but it wouldn't connect. Activesync doesn't respond to my phone.
3. I flashed the shipped rom to my phone from my sd-card in good hope that it would reset the whole process, but it still won't connect to activesync.
So here's my problem; I want to flash a cooked rom to my phone, but I'm unable to connect it to my computer via activesync, what to do?

tried with both ticked and unticked, still nothing
Turn off your phone then keep the camera button pressed in at the same time plug it into the usb port
your should show diff colors on the screen..if so follow what it says in this link.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=330909
and do it from the pc not your mobile...
it's restored, but no activesync still
Is the cable you are using ok? or is it a new one you just got.
does windows see it when you plug it in? if so un-install active sync then reinstall it.
I'm having the same issue with Windows Mobile 6.5 ROM, activesync simply doesn't work ;/

Have you been into settings and un-ticked the box in USB to PC?
Also if you are trying to sync to office you must create a new partnership
google is your best friend.
I have no problems with sync in XP/Vista?windows 7 and office 2007
I am using FMs 1.1 WM 1.1

I failed to mention that I've tried the hard reset as well, no luck.
I thought about the same thing Deuse, but there's no mobile device registered, so I'm not able to delete it.
It seems that you have tried every possible method! Anyway, my suggestion is install activesync in some other PC (friend's) and connect your phone there. See if it registers the phone. If it does then it is problem with the PC and not with phone. In that case, connect phone to PC and open controlpanel>System (icon)>Hardware tab>Device Manager Button in your PC. Unfold Network adapters and see if your phone is detected properly or it is detected with an "!" mark in "Unknown/Other device". If so, delete the device and disconnect phone. Reboot PC, reboot phone connect again and let the PC reinstall your device and see if it recognises your phone.
One more way (I think you might have tried this)- Uninstall Activesync and reinstall and connect phone.
By the way if your phone is not recognised in some other PC then it seems trouble with the phone.
Thanks.
Looks like your cable is faulty. Try activesync connection through bluetooth (for testing, ofcourse you cant flash from bt ).

Hello,
I was reading a thread on someone who had the exact same issue, but no solution was ever posted.
Here's the thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1458066
Background - this is a friends HTC Inspire, no rooting or anything was attempted, factory untouched phone bought new from AT&T.
Turns on, eventually goes to a 2 green arrows in a circle around a phone and then to a red triangle with red exclamation point over a black phone. I can hold the volume up and power to reset or wipe cache, neither does anything. Comes back to the same screen. says:
E:Can't open /cache/recovery/command
-- Wiping data...
Formatting /data...
E:Can't open /data/cwpkg.zip
E:Can't open /data/cw.prop
E:Can't open /cache/cwpkg.zip
E:Can't open /cache/cw.prop
Formatting /cache...
Data wipe complete
Doing a boot holding volume down and power shows this info:
ACE PVT SHIP S-ON RL
HBOOT-0.85.0024
MICROP-0438
RADIO-26.10.04.03_M
eMMC-boot
Apr 12 2011,00:55:45
HBOOT
I tried formatting the sd card and using recovery and stock rom to load, nothing worked, as if not recognized. The sd card had data on it(which was accessible), which I transfered to the computer before formatting.
Any ideas? I have never used an android device but I've been reading through this forum and others for hours now... phone is outside of warranty now too, so that's no longer an option. Thanks in advance.
Devin
It failed during the update to the current rom version or was reset/lost power during update. Use a pc to download the most recent ruu update for the inspire from HTC. Then download and install htc sync on pc. Place phone into fastboot mode with sd card inserted and then plug into pc. Run ruu from pc. Data will be lost but phone will be usable.

So Gizmoe, I am in the same boat as original poster. I downloaded the correct ruu from HTC , but PC won't recognize phone. Point of clarification
When you say "place phone into fast boot mode" does that mean just connect to PC at that point or do I shut phone down and then connect. I've been going bonkers since ATT pushed software update and bricked the phone.
Thanks for any advice.

It means with phone powered off hold down volume up and press power. Continue to hold volume until you see the hboot screen. Then select fastboot ( vol + - to make choice power to select). Then plug into pc. You should see the words fastboot usb on phone.

Ok, we'll I got it into fast boot USB mode, plugged in USB to PC, ran exe ruu file (which takes forever btw) and then got connection error. Ruu application then exits. Must be something hosed up in the phone with drivers. Bummer
I just checked Windows devices and it is showing as a "Device failed enumeration" error. Trying to troubleshoot that but have my doubts right now. I did notice that when I connected it earlier today PC saw it as G drive for a split second and then it dropped.

Do you have HTC sync installed and running?
Hi Gizmoe. Well I have HTC Sync but I didn't think I needed to have that running. I just ran the ruu exe file, but got connection error. I just tried HTC Sync with phone in fastboot usb mode but HTC Sync can't see it. Version of HTC Sync is 3.3.63. The other thing I noticed is that if phone is off and plugged into PC it is recognized as a removable device with a G: drive letter in device manager, but doesn't show up in file explorer and running exe or HTC Sync still can't see it.
If it's connected when it's in fastboot usb mode then windows says "last device connected malfunctioned " and PC doesn't see it.
I'm in this catch 22. Tried to do recovery process to install a ruu off sdcard which errors out, and can't install ruu from pc since phone usb connection not recognized.

UPDATE: I decided to just try the recovery method again while the phone was plugged into USB cable just to charge it. Well it downloaded the latest HTC version of the ROM and it installed....YEAH, BUT phone thinks it's a Desire , not an Inspire and the IMEI MMEI etc. info is missing. No connectivity to mobile network. And I don't have keyboard function either. Sooo, I think I will try another ruu and see if that works starting from scratch. I guess I'm still missing some files or steps in this process. I used to be in the PC business and thought they could be convoluted, but cellphones take the cake.

Yes they do. Just an fyi the desire and inspire are exactly the same device and HTC left the inspire name out of the build prop. It will say it's a desire HD, so that's normal. The rest isn't though. Yeah I would try the ruu again. Just make sure HTC sync is installed and running. You can run it from the phones os too.

Gizmoe, thought I'd give you the latest update: I was able to finally get the PC (Win8) to recognize the phone by installing HTC Sync 3.3.63, installing Win7 64bit drivers.
Then I downloaded RUU_Ace_Sense30_S_Cingular_US_3.20.502.63_Radio_12.69c.60.29U_26.09.13.17_M_release_335423_signed from HTC site. This is an exec file.
Got phone into USB debugging mode, fastboot off , charge only, and ran the above RUU. Seemed to be working as it asked if I wanted to update etc. and warned about losing data. Said ok and RUU exec then popped up status window saying "Waiting for bootloader......................"
This ran for a few minutes and then Windows popped up message saying last USB device connected failed. Then RUU exec finally popped up and said Connection Error 171. No choice but to exit program. This has happened twice. Very annoying. Took forever to get PC to recognize phone and now I'm still stuck with a brick thanks to ATT.
Any thoughts ?

Yes, apparently there are a lot of issues with Win8 and android. I can try it on a machine with 7 or even XP. Unfortunately I'm S-ON so no go on PD98IMG. I'll let you know what happens when I try it on the other Windows machines.
Thanks

UPDATE:
SUCCESS !! :good: Well it only took a boatload of patience and a 7 yr. old laptop running XP to get the phone re-imaged. Process was sloooow (about 30 minutes) but all drivers loaded and the stock ROM from HTC installed fine. Phone is now back to operational. Turns out I didn't lose contacts since they were apparently backed up in Google account. (YEAH) Now I just have to manually install 4 more small security patches from HTC. Their website isn't too clear as to how to do this but I'll muddle thru it.
Thanks Gizmoe for your help and suggestions. You are right I would definitely recommend that anyone trying to root, recover or re-image from scratch an Android from a PC to avoid Win8 at this time and stick with Win7 or XP.
Help me please!

A PD98IMG is a way to install various things but requires an s off device. It is not a method to acheive s off. What exactly is the problem you are having? Are you not able to boot your device? If you are still stock, run the current RUU from HTC through fastboot as explained in previous posts in this thread.
HTC bootloader problem
Gizmoe, I am joining this group, I have the same problem, followed all steps. my problem is that RUU during the process sends msg to phone to reboot and start Bootloader my phone reboots and stays with white screen / green HTC logo (freezes?) RUU after waiting for Bootloader returns error 171 connection problem. My guess is that bootloader is not starting and RUU times out and thinks that it is connection problem.
Uninstalled sync and reinstalled latest version, deleted and re downloaded latest RUU. System recognizes phone ( device manager shows HTC). Any suggestions? Thanks.

Yeah there seems to be a communication issue. Try putting phone into fastboot. Make sure phone reads fastboot usb. Then run RUU. There may be programs in pc as well blocking it. See if you can send fadtboot commands if the aforementioned method doesn't work. If that's how you already tried running it then run it from booted phone.
