Buying a wizard what to look for? - 8125, K-JAM, P4300, MDA Vario ROM Development

Hi, my mate is about to buy a MDA vario this evening and i was wondering what to look for.
does it matter if it is a G3 or a G4? whats the difference in cooking and upgrading and cid unlocking capabilities?
i noticed G4 has HardSPL to use with flashing and G3 you have to keep bugging with IPL and SPL's. so in my opinion G4 seems safer for upgrading. is this true?
I heard there are devices that carry an old bootloader what makes it unable to be updated so its practically useless for upgrading and cooking, is this true?
thanks in advance

Beware of the mini-USB connectors
In addition to memory and other concerns, be aware that one physical weak point on the MDA is the the mini-USB connector that acts as battery charger and synchronizer. Treat it gently. Make sure that the one your mate is purchasing is, in fact, operational.

G3 is better for flashing. I don't have G4 so I don't know for sure. I believe the G4 problem is "solved" but I just seem to recall it is more of a hassle to flash those. With my G3, I don't have to think about it much. Just flash back to Cingular ROM, flash new IPL/SPL, flash ROM, flash new radio. So it's always 4 flashes each time I change, but it's not that tough

I agree that a G3 is easier than a G4 but like hayduke said the problems with flashing a G4 have been solved.
hayduke you don't need to flash back to a carrier ROM each time you want to put a new ROM on your phone. I flash my Wizard all the time and can't remember the last time I flashed back to a carrier ROM. You really only need to do this if you are seeing problems.

can I update ipl and to g4

I have i mate, with qtek flash ftp://xda:[email protected]_220734_2207114_024721_QtekWWE_Ship.exe
ipl 1.00 and g3
how can I update ipl
and if I can update to g4
please help
G3 to G4 = Hardware Replacement!
G3 and G4 refer to the type of DiskOnChip flash memory in your phone. It is not possible to upgrade this through software. Regarding upgrading the IPL, the only ROM package I have seen so far that contains an IPL module is this one, the previous official ROM from QTEK. But you will not gain any functionality by upgrading the IPL, AFAIK.
thank you, but I live in syria, witch very slow internet, please answer this to make me download the file
ok if I update to this ftp://xda:[email protected]_2090724_20907106_020720_QtekWWE_Ship.exe and get ipl updated
can I restore ftp://xda:[email protected]_220734_2207114_024721_QtekWWE_Ship.exe with ipl updated?
and what is teh version of new ipl
Why IPL?
Why do you want to update the IPL? As you already have a QTEK ROM on your i-mate I assume that you have done a CID-unlock. If you want to update the phone with the latest QTEK ROM then you should be able to do this directly. In the worst case you would have to replace the ROMUpdateUtility.exe in the ROM package with this (126 KB).
my biggest problem is the camera, and the second I love to update every thing, what is wrong with update.
second I have already use the qteck rom 2.20 and the camera is the same, very slow mtion, I didn't use the video in jamin tell now, waiting to fix this.
i'm downloading now the 2.09 qtek hope it will update the ipl, but I'm goning bask to jamin 2.13 and the new radio 2.47.21 becasue the new qtek is not god, I can't insall net 2.0 sp1 and teh touch screen somtimes become unsable, I have to tap below the place I want to tap and I need to softrest the phone, this is my biggest broblem in qtek 2.20
I'm now have IPL 1.00
ROM version 2.20.7.34 WWE
ROM date 7/10/06
Radio version 02.47.21
Protocol versioin 4.1.13.24
ExtROM version 2.20.7.114
and I'm going to insall Rom version hope it will update the IPL and I'm going back to jamin 2.13
thank you for replying me.

The Prophet camera is a fine piece of junk. Nothing will ever turn into a nikon. I would not change a stable rom just hoping that the camera becomes more responsive.
Ciao,
G.
yeah, always remember, your phone is not a digicam, if it were then it would make all digi cams obsolete.
I always laugh watching people taking photos of big events on their camera phones only to complain how crap it is. Its a phone.
The photos from the Prohet camera could be a bit better. The noise reduction is quite brutal. Makes photos look like painted with watercolors. I have a SE P990i and I wouldn't expect the camera hardware to be drastically different from the Prophet's. The main difference lies in the software.

SE phones have outstanding cameras (compared to other phones, obviously).
I have a K750i, 2Mp with autofocus, which makes acceptable photos, especially in daylight. In comparison, photos taken with the prophet look like the ones made using the first generation camera phones from 5-6 years ago.
Ciao,
G.

There isn't any advantage to update the IPL
it's only the bootloader
don't worry about it
And the file you downloaded is NOT defective, it just doesn't contain an IPL update.
thanks
it is not only the boat loader
it's like bios in motherboard it's for hardware not software, it it's useful and there is advantage but you can't see
initial program load
please just help me to get new one

Sorry, but you don't have to explain to me what it is, it IS the bootloader, and it consists of 2 parts:
IPL =Initial program loader
SPL=secondary program loader
IPL is very small around 64kb
SPL is bigger, almost 800 Kb and contains amoung other things, the code for reflashing the DOC (or disk on chip) (two functions, read and write the flash chip)
again, there isn't much benefit from a newer IPL/SPL, and if you havent CID unlocked your prophet even worse, because it will refuse to downgrade to a lower version for example.
if you want a newer IPL, try reading this site, learn how to extract the IPL from a ROM image and flash it to your phone.
however be carefull that you DO NO mix G3 / G4 IPL/SPL versions, because it will brick your phone.

This maybe a dumb question...but I can't find the answer. How do you tell if you have a G3 or G4 version? And can you just upload Radio ROM? I went to the Prophet Wiki & I see the ROM's but no description of what the different revisions fix. Plus when I select the upgrade it states that updating the Radio ROM deletes everything on the device. I guess I didn't think you had to hard reset with just a Radio update???
Sorry, I didn't mean to insult you, I know you are so great at PDA, and you are developing your own ROM, but I live in Syria, I can't open FTP folder, and I download the file more than 5 times, and today I went to a café net and download the same file from ADSL connection, and all the files were defective, and I can't download and try so much ROM, I'll wait maybe other 10 years until there will be ADSL cheap and fast for all people, I could make my own ROM if I have the equipments, most of all is the internet. ;;;;;;; the strange thing this file (qtek 2.09) is the only one that was defective from this forum with me.
I did unlock my CID; I don't know why you all give it very great attention, as we can unlock CID after upgrading to SPL 2.20 using the no id utility (like what I did, and I did downgrade to jamin 2.13 with AKU 2.0, but again to qtek 2.20 with AKU 2.2), I want to ask if I can lock my CID again?
Please just tell me about the ROM contain newer IPL module. Or if you can make IPL patch and post in this forum!
Sorry again, but I-mate support is so bad, qtek support told me to contact HTC, and no reply from HTC support; so where can I get the IPL?

Who cares who you are and where are you from? People have different views about politics. It has so complicated history with Israel and Palestine. These two countries (Yes, BOTH) are just trying to Kill more and more people over there, and nobody can really tell who is right and who is wrong. Do NOT sell your points to other people. Also, I do not see the point why you have to emphasize that? What do you want anyway? Were you trying to get help on you PDA or some mercy for your country and people from this forum? This is just a PDA technique forum, not anything else.
By the way, without good internet connection is not a big deal for most part of the world, not just for Palestine. It may not be Israel's fault. A lot of people from different country do not even have internet. Do not think all the pain from this world is because of Israel.

Should I upgrade? Please help me decide...

Hey all,
My wizard is about 1 year old, and I'm getting the need for an upgrade.
I was thinking about trying a WM6 ROM, but can't decide if I should.
My question really are:
1. Is it worth it? Will it feel any different than WM5, other than just new look?
2. What are the chances of bricking the device during the upgrade?
Thanks a lot..

Let me just say that in January I was ready to throw my Wizard (8125) in the trash. I hated the phone as it was the worst purchase I ever made. It was unreliable, dropped calls, and reset for no reason all the time. It became for me just a PDA, and even then one I barely used since it would reset everytime I started to really need it (or so it seemed). My Nokia 6620 was far more reliable and useful than my 8125 ever was (but due to contracts and prices, getting a new replacement wasn't really an option for me, but I did figure out how to SIM unlock my Nokia 6620 so I was looking at going back to it). Since I had decided to go back to the 6620, I remembered hearing about people flashing custom roms on their Wizard devices, and decided to come back to XDA-Dev (I had found it last September but the term "brick" scared me off), and give it a shot. What was the worst that could happen? Brick it? I was ready to trash it anyway so who cared.
I read everything and decided to give the Faria AKU3.3 a try (WM6 was brand new out and I was intemidated by things I was reading). After I successfully CID Unlocked and then flashed the Tmobile 2.26 rom (which I found hilarious on a Cingular device) I then did AKU 3.3. All I can say is, the rest is history. My eyes were opened. Suddenly this phone became what it was supposed to have been when I bought it. It was fast and reliable. All of my issues (resets, hangs, and dropped calls) were all gone!
So at a minimum, CID Unlock (if you ahve a G3) and put a custom WM5 rom on. You will NOT be disappointed...
But then the ROM flashing bug took over and I'm firmly into WM6 now. I don't think I can ever think about going back to WM5. I just like the feel and ease of things in WM6 (but at first some things I did not like so it takes time to get used to some of the changes).
So good luck in what you decide. Most claim after upgrading to mine (or many other of the custom roms here) that their phone has new life and it stalls the need to switch to buying a new device... Yeah, I'll probably move to an 8525 (Hermes) sometime, but right now my little Wizard is my best buddy and as important to me as my work computer. I use it for everything now...

Been a while....but I'm back ATT Tilt

So I haven't been here in a while but it seems that everyone and their Mom are making Rom's for HTC devices. Also it seems the tilt is known by a few names so I never am quite sure if I'm reading info for the right phone.
I looked at the wiki but a lot of that information is old. So I guess my 1st question is this:
My company is getting me a AT&T Tilt and the 1st thing I want to do is get rid of the bloatware from AT&T. There doesn't seem to be a catch all for all things related to the tilt.
So what ROM's are stable enough to install?
Are these phones unable to be sim unlocked (not like it matters)?
ISo you can flash the Radio ROM seperate from the Phone RIM (I'm so confused)?
And finally this phone can still be CID unlocked (Which will need to happen)in order to flash a unofficial "cooked ROM on to the handset)?
If there is one post that shows all this info that would be awesome. I've followed a few threads but the information seems disjointed and then others start talking about handsets similar to the tilt but I don't know if it applies.
Soft for all the newbie questions.
I had a TMo Dash and MDA and then a Cingular 8125. That was over 6 months ago. Started a new job and they made me go to a blackberry. Then we got bought by Qualcomm so now I have convinced my boss to get me this phone.
Thanks in advance
It's all here. Your Tilt is an HTC Kaiser and you're in the right forum! Some quick answers:
HardSPL gives CID unlock
No free SIM unlock yet
All ROMs are stable.
Independent radio flashing is limited b/c AT&T's latest ROM features a radio unique to it. Sound is lost if either of the two appear separately. Orange ties SIMLock to their radio so if you flash a different radio on an Orange phone, you will need to sim unlock with several of the free unlockers to get up and running again. However you can flash a different ROM on Orange w/o touching the radio and everything's golden still.
Look at the sticky threads in upgrading for more complete answers. Happy hunting!
Nice executive summary Sleuth, however I have difficulties to understand what you mean with this:

No worries, actually a very interesting phenomenom.
Did any of the guys have to do a double unlock? (i.e. before and after they moved to orange radio). And were the codes different?
hope this helps
hardspl is necessary for ROM flashing (sleuth kinda glazed over it)
when you put on hardspl, it won't look like anything was done, but you can then flash ROMs as much as you'd like.
I stick with at&t ROMs to avoid radio issues.
You could always start by hard resetting and then soft resetting before the at&t customizations install. Either way it's a good idea to test out the stock ROM.

Reading Too Much

HI ALL, new Tilt coming some time tomorrow, migrating over form Hermes and I"m confused, maybe I've been reading too much LOL. Any way, I just want to make sure I have this right.
First, run POF's hard SPL 1.1. to super CID it.
Second, Security Unlock it.
Third HardSPL 3.28 or 9 it.
Fourth, Install any ROM I Want.
Or am I missing something.
OH I'm planning on staying with the newest AT&T ROM or Shoguns DEATHV3.5 for a while, till I get used to the difference between the two devices.

After I wait a few hours, the phone will start to respond, but will be significantly sluggish.
I believe I should have posted this in the general section (Not sure, I'm fairly new to these forums)

I think it's time you bring it to your local Verizon store and show them. Tell them "Look, I turn on the phone, and I can't use it!" I'm guessing they're smart enough to realize you need a replacement because that's not normal. I'm sure they'll give you another replacement.
If they don't, flash a ROM and see if it works. If everything works with the custom ROM, then it was obviously a Verizon stock ROM flaw (which I doubt since this doesn't seem common).
Yea, I had to pay for my first replacement ($50)
I hear the official 6.5 is out, where can I find that?
Also, I don't know the first thing about flashing phones with custom ROMs

Pshh.. they gave you a faulty one now, so you shouldn't have to pay for the next replacement!
Officially, WM6.5 for the TP2 is for the Unlocked GSM European TP2. It's only for GSM networks, though (you have CDMA, so you can't flash that!).
Custom ROM flashing: I learned from a pictorial. Just follow everything! Always flash a CDMA Rhodium/TP2 ROM (you can find those at PPCGeeks) to your Verizon/Sprint/Telus TP2.
Most ROMs are not going to be suited for your phone (keyboard), so some fixes are found here.
Some of the famous CDMA ROMs are MightROMs and EnergyROMs. Find one that suits you!
*CDMA = Sprint/Verizon/Telus
GSM = Unlocked/Tilt2/T-Mobile* ROMs are made specifically for one network, and a particular device. So, never flash a GSM ROM onto a CDMA phone, and never flash a TP1 ROM to a TP2.
Good luck!

Actually, the US Cellular TP2 also comes with 6.5. If you don't have a US Cellular phone though, you still can't flash it and will need a custom rom.
Wow, you guys are extremely helpful over here.
So I should flash it, or ask for a new one?

I heard about that. However, like you said, it wouldn't be great with a Verizon phone since I doubt there's an official ROM floating around (there would be a ROM dump on PPCGeeks) but why would anyone want a stock ROM to replace a stock ROM?!

Ask for a new one first because we don't know if the issue you have is due to faulty hardware or software. If it's hardware, a new ROM can't do anything. If it was software or firmware(ROM), then a new ROM should be able to fix it.
If you ever need to return the phone and it has a custom ROM, you will have to re-flash the stock ROM found at thewingster. You will then have to follow the steps to return stockSPL (very bottom of the post). If you don't do these return-to-stock steps, Verizon wouldn't accept it!

I'm guessing wait 'til the weekend arrives. Use the phone hardcore! If anything goes wrong with it for the next few days, at least you can return it again.
If you're truly desperate, I guess you could flash!
lol there's hardcore ways to use our phone? I thought it was bad-ass all around.
Is there an ETA of when Verizon's TP2 6.5 is suppose to arrive? I thought it was December/January :\
It's out... check out the thread over at PPC Geeks.
Got it. Thanks
