Hey all,
My wizard is about 1 year old, and I'm getting the need for an upgrade.
I was thinking about trying a WM6 ROM, but can't decide if I should.
My question really are:
1. Is it worth it? Will it feel any different than WM5, other than just new look?
2. What are the chances of bricking the device during the upgrade?
Thanks a lot..

Let me just say that in January I was ready to throw my Wizard (8125) in the trash. I hated the phone as it was the worst purchase I ever made. It was unreliable, dropped calls, and reset for no reason all the time. It became for me just a PDA, and even then one I barely used since it would reset everytime I started to really need it (or so it seemed). My Nokia 6620 was far more reliable and useful than my 8125 ever was (but due to contracts and prices, getting a new replacement wasn't really an option for me, but I did figure out how to SIM unlock my Nokia 6620 so I was looking at going back to it). Since I had decided to go back to the 6620, I remembered hearing about people flashing custom roms on their Wizard devices, and decided to come back to XDA-Dev (I had found it last September but the term "brick" scared me off), and give it a shot. What was the worst that could happen? Brick it? I was ready to trash it anyway so who cared.
I read everything and decided to give the Faria AKU3.3 a try (WM6 was brand new out and I was intemidated by things I was reading). After I successfully CID Unlocked and then flashed the Tmobile 2.26 rom (which I found hilarious on a Cingular device) I then did AKU 3.3. All I can say is, the rest is history. My eyes were opened. Suddenly this phone became what it was supposed to have been when I bought it. It was fast and reliable. All of my issues (resets, hangs, and dropped calls) were all gone!
So at a minimum, CID Unlock (if you ahve a G3) and put a custom WM5 rom on. You will NOT be disappointed...
But then the ROM flashing bug took over and I'm firmly into WM6 now. I don't think I can ever think about going back to WM5. I just like the feel and ease of things in WM6 (but at first some things I did not like so it takes time to get used to some of the changes).
So good luck in what you decide. Most claim after upgrading to mine (or many other of the custom roms here) that their phone has new life and it stalls the need to switch to buying a new device... Yeah, I'll probably move to an 8525 (Hermes) sometime, but right now my little Wizard is my best buddy and as important to me as my work computer. I use it for everything now...

Hi,
I have had my HTC TyTn II from Orange UK for 3 days now, I love the phone but hate the fact that Orange have removed windows live messenger, and customised the home screen (not in a good way in my opinion!).
Here are the version numbers I see as the phone starts:
R 1.27.14.32
G 22.45.88.07H
D 1.81.00.00
I have been reading up on this forum for the past few days and have decided the best way to get rid of the Orange customised screen and the lack of windows live messenger would be to flash the TyTn II with a different ROM, maybe the original HTC ROM??
Obviously my main concern is bricking my phone, and also voiding the warentee, so i'm basically looking for advice on my best course of action?
I have read that the first thing I should do is load HardSPL (which I understand is a modified bootloader?) my current bootloader versions show as: (obtained by powering up the phone with the camera button pressed)
KAIS130
SPL-1.81.0000
CPLD-8
..but won't even this first step of replacing my bootloader void my warentee, or can it be reversed?? Can I take a backup of my entire phone (including bootloader) in it's current state so that it can be restored if need be?
Can anyone give me some advice / point me in the right direction of where I should start, as I am scared of breaking my new phone, as people on other sites have said they have done!!
Thanks in advance,
Regards
Richard
Read this tread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=365497
then:
Read all the wiki's and stickies for Your device (Kaiser, right).
Use Search to find out about things whick is not clear.
Best of luck!
Personally, I would go for it.
yes to hardspl
then I wouldnt settle for a stock rom - I would go for a cooked one- like dutty's.
You will void the warranty, and as far as I know there is no way back from this.
But that is what this site is all about. Ignore the #2 poster, I can see you have read all you can and you seem to have the right idea about this. So go on.
Just do all of the HardSPL steps and then install a Cooked ROM.
You won't look back. At the moment I suggest you stay away from the 6.1 ROMs until a stable one emerges.
I have an Orange Kaiser.. the branding is really crappy compared to the HTC stuff, god knows why they changed it!
Anyway, I thought I'd retain my warranty for the time being.
So I removed the Orange Home app, installed the HTC Home with 5 buttons, the HTC WMP skin, HTC Calc skin and Kaiser Tweak - all from here and it's much better now.
I expect I could save some memory and get it running a little faster without the Orange ROM, but for the time being it's fine.

Do it.. BUT READ EVERYTHING ON THIS FORUM FIRST RELATING TO FLASHING ROMs. Once you have read it, read it again and ensure you understand it. That way it is unlikely you will brick the device.
I had my TYTN II for a week or so and then flashed it to a new ROM... would never consider going back to the orange one...unless of course it needs to go back as a faulty device. ( there are original orange ROMs to revert back to on here if you ever need them)
It's interesting to see you have the .32 radio on yours.....Mine was shipped with .29 so I may now consider flashing my radio ROM.. how are your signal strengths and GPS lock times??

With what? I had the .32 and couldn't find a copy of it anywhere. I wanted to keep a backup in case of warranty return but I inadvertently flashed the wrong rom yesterday resulting in a new radio and SIM lock
Obviously removing the SIM lock was easy enough but now I can never revert back to my original radio.
The main reason I wanted to re-flash the radio was to see if my wifi problems could be resolved since most of the reports I have seen about the wifi issue relate to UK Orange phones... No luck there either and it's really starting to stress me out
Someone has told me they might have a contact at Orange dev to get a copy of the original rom but I'll believe that when I see it
Anyway, back on topic... even though I've no way to revert back my radio for warranty return, I'm glad I'm rid of the Orange bloatware and will never look back.
Duttys rom looked and felt nice but I had Bluetooth issues with that so have gone back to stock HTC rom for now. HTC home plus the Home customiser, some new icons, quickMenu and that'll do it nicely for me
One word of advice though.... after you've installed hardSPL, CID and SIM unlocked, you'll never be able to put the device down. I don't even want to think about the amount of time I've spent flashing and playing with it since then

There is no OFFICIAL 6.1 rom. Just test and cooked roms.
oh ok then so why are microsoft advertising this as a release when its an up and coming
it diffenatley says 6.1 has arrived
I think Microsoft are done with the rom but not HTC or the operators.
No official ROM with WM6.1 is released as of this moment.
It depends on your OEM (Orange I guess) whether you will get an official WM6.1 update.
HTC has promised they will release a new ROM based on WM6.1 (and it will include something of a driver or stuff...). But it is intended for original unbranded HTC devices. It will be released later (this month?).
If you would really want WM6.1, the best option is to flash a cooked ROM. Most recent ones are WM6.1 based.
Don't look at Microsoft for ROM upgrades, that's not their duty.
does that mean they wont be letting it go from there website until htc has started releasing it, what about the uk operaters

Correct. MS will NOT release a WM 6.1 ROM for anyone to download and install. Only the phone vendors (HTC, Orange, AT&T) release such ROMS.
The release of WM6.1 by Microsoft was a Release-To-Manufacturer (RTM) event. Ofcourse Microsoft puts this information on their site. It isn't really their intention of teasing you (I presume at least).
I takes some time for the OEMs to finalize a ROM with WM6.1. That's why there is a time interval between the MS announcement and the actual release.
What about UK operators? No idea...
cool so does anyone have the date of the release are is it speculation up until now, all of the websites i am reading say that htc will be releasing the rom mid may
No one really knows. If we did, everyone would have been really happy. HTC had promised a while ago they would be releasing a fix for the graphics problem somewhere near the end of March. It was never released.
Although I have all confidence in HTC and the sites reporting the impending ROM release, we'll never know the exact release date until the ROM is released.
If it's really such a big deal for you, start flashing!
well it does but my major issue is
a) i dont kno how to do it
b) will over write all my data
c) will it take away all my presets and settings
d) will invalidate my warranty
e) i thort microsoft were trying to take all the roms down
and last nite i seen a youtube clip of a person with a windows mobile 6.1 rom on a tytn II is this american
He was probably using a custom ROM...
Regarding your issues:
a) There is really enough info on this site which clearly explanes how to do it. It should be no problem really.
b) It will indeed reset all your settings and data. Some programs are designed to back up some of your data. Pim Backup is an example which backs up your PIM data.
c) see b)
d) It does, but it can be reverted. There is a thread regarding the issue.
e) Than enjoy it while you still can...
like someone said, there are leaked roms on this site, they're not official, but over here, that's plenty official enough for us
most of your questions can be answered by reading the first sticky in the forum, and/or the wiki, which i advise you to do so. once you are done with that, you will understand this rom upgrading process a lot more
imo cooked roms by chefs here at xda r so much better than oem roms so i don't even know why u would want the oem ..
does mean the eventual official rom will delete all the stuff too
im just pissed off coz with the programs ive got running ive got the best setup ive had
i used freestyl but there was too many bugs so now i use ifonz and s2u2
ive got all my cabs backed up tho which is good
my poroblems with my micro sd are worst
bought a 6gb micro sdhc off amazon, which only showed up as 1.69 gb after researching i got theat pnanasonic formatter thingy and then it worked fine, then it just stopped working. ive got a claim in with amazon to get the money back
still dont know wether it was a fake or not
Make no mistake, upgrading any ROM will completly reset your device.
If you would ever start flashing, there are tools which allow automated installations of CABs. In that way, you can get your device up and running in a very short period of time.
Tools that come to mind ar UC (user customization) and the tools provided by XDA-member Bengalih.
Better luck next time with your microSDHC card...
i just hope it get resolved
does anyone kno the telltale signs of a fake micro sdhc. apart from the fact that it ceases to work after a while. it came in the origional packet

if it works once you probably don't have a fake, you may need to reformat the sdhc, also a lot of older roms have issues with sdhc. On your original note, jump in man the cooked roms are great. Google xda pim backup, download pim backup and backup your stuff (or just use activesync), Use Olipro to safeguard your device, and then flash a cooked rom, I recomend Dutty's April 29, read the wiki before you flash, your phone will become so much more useful, give it a try.
I think this might have been covered before
Got a Wizard here that came with WM5 from o2 a few years back, its a work phone so doesnt get a massive amount of hammer but its slow, dead slow.
I just want something really small and quick, phones always on charge unless I'm out and about which isnt that much so perhaps oc'ing it might help?
I downloaded a WM6 rom by mfrazz (5.2.318(15342.4.0.01)) about a year ago and yes it looks nice and does more than the Wm5 that was on the phone to start with, but its irritatingly slow, I'm using the phone more than I was originally so it makes speed more of an issue.
I tried to flash a rom called "Wizard_19855_Clean_V1" but now I seem to have lost the phones ability to find a service.
The phones not bricked so I presume all is not lost but a quick shove in the right direction would be appreciated, the other option of course is to stick WM5 back on it if someone has a link to the latest (last?) o2 WM5 rom, then drop it down the stairs or something and get a new work phone perhaps
Nevermind, almost perfectly timed, 83% through flashing the phone with the 6r5 rom from Mfrazzz we've just had a power cut...
So, what do people recommend as a replacement to a bricked Wizard lol...
it is not dead. can be revived. well, if you want it to be.
get your power turned back on, then put it in bootloader after charging it completely and flash again.
I can get the bootloader RGB screen, have tried the solution here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=276963 but get the "You didn't get the proper security level to download a specific image" error, just trying to sort that out now, phones on charge while I dig out the solution to that now, something to do with it being locked seems to be the problem, will see how far I get and then try again..
38% thru reflashing with the Update Utility File thing...
See if we can keep power in the building this time
Right, were back on WM5 thanks to the Wizard Love rom, when I try to stick mfrazzz's 6r5 on tho it gets to 99% and then fails, have tried it a few times now but with the same results..
try a release like amp(linkage) or a tnt thats known for speed. Ive been using amp's newer release for months on att's network, with strong service and considerable speed boosts over the older faria/mrfrazz roms i used
i have yet to need to oc this amp build but was a pretty avid overclocker of my older ones.
ps: im prolly going to cook/flash this rom when release 2 comes out(hopefully tonight) cleaner slate than amp
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=415157
pss: if you're not.. try flashing with no sd card too
Yeah not got the SD in there when flashing, I've tried a few different ROMs now and it looks like I missing something as it still appears to be on the Wizard Love WM5 rom even though I'm trying to get it up a WM6 rom (Brightrom/Manilla UI/XM6r5)..
Will try the one you've linked too and see how that goes..
Somethings not right here, I've gotta be doing something wrong, usign shell tool it tells me that the Wizard Love rom has the following.
Externsion ROM
OS
GSM
Splash Screen
HTC Logo
Yet the other rom's I've been trying only appear to be the OS, and even though they seem to be uploading to the phone properly when i reset it it still has the Wizard Love rom on it..
Hi,
I've had my Touch Pro for about a month and I've had enough of that stupid Vodafone start-up screen and everything!
So I've been reading up on this forum and downloaded Total Commander, Advanced Config and RegEdit and I haven't seen anything on here about ROM's on a Vodafone Touch Pro...........and I'm a bit scared of bricking my phone!
So has anyone got an idiots' guide to getting a decent ROM on my Touch Pro? I mainly just want to get rid of all the Vodafone branding and then maybe start playing about with it more!
Thanks
I've just got a Vodafone one too! And was wondering the same thing
I'll await answers from the masses
I have the UK Vodafone Touch Pro and have just changed the ROM to ROMeOS 1.40.1. The speed difference is substancial, and I would recommend it if you are willing to risk your warrenty.
Just make sure you follow all the posted advice regarding flashing your rom.

I've never had a signal problem, so I wouldnt think so. Its just an OS change, not the radio.
I have a vodafone rom and I thought the slowness was normal (I mean how would I know and different?) :S If there are alternatives, I too am interested.
I had the phone for about a month before I decided to look into the other ROMs, mainly because i'd got into the habit with my old v1606 (Hermes).
After looking at a few I eventually decided to try the ROMeOS one first, and so far I havent regreted it. It seems much faster, and the changes that have been made seem to improve the operation.
You still get the initial Vodafone boot screen then an alternate ROMeOS one, however even the boot seems much faster to me (I haven't actually timed it)
The only thing I will say is that if you like to modify TF3D then uninstall the 'HTC Manila Enhancements' using Remove Programs before you install any other mods or you may get a clash as I did.
I should add that I have only flashed ROMeOS in the last 24hrs so a full 'workout' has not been given to it yet.
Also make sure you read and follow the beginners guide in the ROM Development folder before you attempt the flash.
I have my Vodafone UK Touch Pro for 2 months. Yesterday i decided to change the ROM.
There is sooo much hype about bricking the phone but all the tools out there made it very easy for me, actually i only used 2 tools!
First download and install HardSPL
Then install the rom of your choice using the supplied .exe.
Simple, where abouts you based, could poss do it for you if you want?
I did manage to change my ROM - to the afour mentioned ROMeOS ROM - which is awesome. I did download Elite ROM but it was loaded with way too many programs for me!
It is a simple process, but I still get worried!!
I would like to change my Vodafone branded device to the Romeos rom if possible but want to know how I can make a dump of my current Vodafone ROM so If for any reason the device needs to be sent back I can shove that ROM back on?
Also, when changing roms, Is there a way to not lose your text messages?
Thanks
Regards,
Neil
Yeah - use a program called PIMBACKUP. I've backed all my stuff up about 3 times now with no problems.
You can save your original ROM, I never did as you can download the stock ROM's from here.
Read the Flashing For Newbies topic - it's invaluable. It ill have the links for the downloads you need
Touch Pro's Worst Rom
Just wanted to add my vote for hating this ROM. The red theme is horrible.
I thought I would wait a bit before flashing after shelling out £370 but this ROM was totally ruining my experience. Flashed within 12 hours of the phone arriving!!!
Can anybody who has successfully removed the Vodafone Rom and installed a new one shed some light on how they managed to do it. Ive flashed roms dozens of times on my Kaiser and the Hermes and had no problems at all but so far ive had no joy with the Touch Pro. No matter how i try and install hard SPL (either via the pc or using manual install) i never get past the black screen stage and 0% progress and then when the phone restarts nothings changed and i can no longer connect to Active Sync without hard resetting the phone and restarting the computer. I cannot use the Vodaphone Rom its so awful so im desperate for some advice.
MagicAlex - I flashed my TouchPro twice and had no problems either time. I basically followed the step by step guide which is stickied to the other ROM Developement forum.
Sorry I coudn't be more help, but that's how I did it, thanks to this wonderful forum
oh yeah ive flashed mine three times now. it turned out to be some mysterious issue with my pc. after two days of getting nowhere using Vista32 i plugged my TP into my girlsfriends laptop running Vista64 & it flashed first time. I have no idea what the issue is as i flashed my Vario2 & 3 dozens of times on my pc with no problems at all. very strange!
I'm deciding whether or not to trade in my Fuze for a Bold.
The Fuze is nice, but I don't know if I can stand Windows Mobile anymore.
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks
well gotta give it to a Bold that it's design is timeless
and last for a long time and can handle some absuse
Can't stand Windows Mobile? Are you using a stock AT&T ROM? If so, that's your problem.
Thats funny I had the Bold 2 days before release and couldn't wait for the Fuze to be released so I could trade it in for a Fuze. Honestly the new crackberry is nice and all don't get me wrong but the Fuze and WM is so much more flexable, not the stock ROM mind you. First thing I did was Hard-SPL and get a cooked ROM. If your running around with AT&T's stock ROM your doing it wrong, completely wrong.
Im due for an upgrade and im on the fence between the bold and the fuze , i currently have a tilt and curve

I agree with you, but I think there's a good point to be made here: it shouldn't be that way. You shouldn't *need* to hack your device for it to be usable.
like i tell all the customers in my store.
if you email alot, get blackberry.
if you do everything get htc.

I have the Fuze now and used to have the bold when it came out for testing and as far as usable they both are usable from the start. The difference between the two is that with Windows Mobile you can enhance the phone and taylor it to your liking by changing the rom, adding cabs, modifying the OS etc...but with the bold and blackberry in general there is only so much you can do. I do however think that it is the best blackberry yet (have not used the Storm yet) and if you seek flexibility WM is your best bet.
Thanks everyone.
I actually used RomeOS for a while, but i reverted back to the stock ATT rom just in case I decide to get the bold. I have several weeks before my month is up, maybe i'll wait and see. My only gripe is that the phone menu is a bit sluggish. Is this b/c of TF3D or WinMobile itself?

+1
so true
I wondered the same thing. I ended up getting and keeping both though. I send and receive a lot of emails daily but I also do the other stuff. They complement each other nicely but what drove me to testing and eventually owning a Blackberry was that I became obsessive with tweaking, customizing, and installing things on my Touch Pro. I would spend HOURS each day on here searching and installing until I made the phone unstable. Hard reset and was back at it again. So the Blackberry was my way of saving my from myself, especially since it is on a platform that I'm not very familiar with. But both are great phones. The best way to decide would probably be to try them both out if at all possible.
i think Dieter Bohn from WMexperts states it best. He temporarily swapped his Fuze for a bold from the guys at crackberry.com and he says something along the lines that while using the bold he finds he constantly has to adapt himself to the BB os which is opposite to WM experience where you adapt it to your needs.
and to enrique999, i was under the exact same circumstances, always late to dinners or parties because i had to update an app, or customize it just to how i wanted the device after a hard reset or rom upgrade.. i was gonna get the bold but it took to long to come out so i got an e71. Now i use my WM device during the week, and e71 during the weekend
