Can activesync deal with more than one phone? - General Topics

Hey i'm kind of new to syncing I wanted to know if activesync for pocket pc can handle more than one phone and if it can have 2 sets of data, because my brother has a pocket pc and I also do and he says if I sync my phone on our computer, it can erase all the contacts off of his phone the next time he syncs, is this true?
and I had my phone at one point synced to another computer, is there atleast a way that I can copy it to this computer? like is there a file or anything that can be coppied?
I just flashed my phone and all my contacts and appointments etc. were on that computer
can anyone help me?

Yes, just set up partnership for each phone. So when activesync will recognize each phone when plug the usb in.

i apologize i meant to say that I have done that before, but more or less if outlook can have two sets of contacts......
and is there a file that I can copy from the other computer to this one with all the contacts and other info?

Not that I know of. I have 3 ppc's and if I let them all sync contacts, tasks and such they all have the same info.
You would have to set up seperate profiles for each phone and just uncheck the parts you dont want contacted.
If you absolutely must sync them both to outlook you can set up a seperate user account that way outlook will treat that particular log in as a seperate user and you can have him sync on one log in and you on another windows log in.

okay I may have to set up another windows user, but is there atleast some sort of file that I can copy? i have no contacts on my phone and I need to atleast get them on this phone...
the computer with the info isnt syncing to my phone since I tried to update it to activesync 4.5
PLEASE help me

I think the problem, is that it isn't very clear what you want to do. Are you looking to copy the outlook data file to another computer? Or are you trying to copy the outlook data file directly to your phone w/o syncing? If you are trying to copy the outlook data file from one computer to another, then yes...that is the Outlook.pst file. It is located in C:\Documents and Settings\{Profile Name}\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\
Simply copy this file from one computer to the next replacing the old outlook.pst, or if you want to merge it b/c you have info on the other computer perform an import.

Help!!! How do I get my contacts to my PC?

I have a T-mobile MDA (wizard). I dropped the phone and it is no longer working.
I cannot access my contacts via the phone. I cannot get activesync to detec the phone.
Is there any other way for me to get my contact list from this phone?
My laptop does detect the phone via IRD... is there some other 3rd party app that can simply download all the contacts to my laptop?

You can beam them
1, one by one from the built-in contacts
2, all of them at once with PI or AF
3, export them into CVS with either SKTools or PPCBckpContacts.exe and import them into Outlook. See http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=279925 for the latter
just tell us how dead is your phone.. "I cannot access my contacts via the phone." <-- that is serious
How dead?
Well, it powers up...but cannot obtain service, I cannot make calls.
I cannot access my contacts. I cannot get to my Phone program.
I can use internet explorer and some other programs but that's it.
It will not connect via activesysnc - it gives me errors when I hook up the cable.

Questions:
1, one by one from the built-in contacts
- What do I beam to? I only have 1 battery, so I cannot have both new mda and old mda on at same time....
2, all of them at once with PI or AF
- what is PI or AF ?
3, export them into CVS with either SKTools or PPCBckpContacts.exe and import
- i cant install any files or programs on the old phone..its pretty dead.
I'm just looking for the easiest way to get my contact list out...
thx
copy pim.vol into new phone
Quick question:
I beamed the PIM.VOL file from my old MDA to my laptop via infrared.
Can I simply just copy this PIM.VOL file to my new MDA and it will have all my contacts ?

OK, I'm using active sync and going thru file explorer.
I then drag and drop my old PIM.vol into my new MDA.
I get following error:
"source file is in use and cannot be changed"
???
Nooooooooooooooo!
I don't know what the hell happend... my new MDA phone was working fine all day.
I installed a few programs today and then did a soft reset.
And, boom - the phone is now dead, just like my old one !!!!
It can't make calls, it has no signal, i cant access any programs. It's behaving exactly like my old dead phone!
Unreal, I am now wondering if activesync screwed up something or maybe something with the programs?
O well, I had to do a hard reset in order to get the phone working again...
unbelieveable...
PIM file screwing up my phone
My new MDA phone gets screwed up if I try to copy the old PIM file to the new phone.
here is what I did:
I rename the orig PIM.vol file in MDA to PIMOLD.vol.
(after 10 seconds, a new PIM.vol file appears automatically in the MDA)
Then, I copy the PIM.vol file from my laptop to the new MDA.
Then, I wait 15 secs.... then I do soft-reset
Phone powers back and up and is use-less... no signal, can't use phone and can't access contacts.
So, does anyone have another idea on how to get my old contacts back?
Just a thought, if you do the same to your OLD MDA does it work again?

Do you mean a hard-reset? If so, No...I have not tried a hard-reset on my old MDA.
Mainly b/c I got a new MDA phone from T-mobile only due to the fact that my old MDA was "dead"...therefore, If I hard-reset it ..and it stars working again.....then , they may charge me for the new MDA or return my old phone back to me...
But ya, I'm willing to bet that a hard-reset will fix my old phone...however, the contacts will still be gone...
Probably your orignial (eg old phone) PIM.vol is screwed too.
I was able to get my old MDA phone up and working again, heres what I did:
deleted the PIM.vol file then soft-reset. upon boot, it has new PIM.vol file and empty contacts!
Now, I'm trying to see if I can copy the orig PIM file I backed up from Old phone back to the old phone... and see if my contacts show up...
If they do...then I can use some app to do the backup ...... we shall see...
Good luck. Since your pim.vol can screw your new phone, it maybe the problem that is screwing your old phone.

I would suggest you to use the emulator in order to try to get your contacts back. You can break it whenever you want, if you do a hard reset, the emulator is clean as before!
Just go on microsoft site in order to have it ( http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...A5-183A-4A1E-A7E2-CC500ED1F19A&displaylang=en )

Active Sync question

Does anyone remember how Active Sync would create a folder for you on your desktop or where ever with your files from your phone in it? Did that go away with 4.5 or am I just not looking hard enough or in the right places. It's like as soon as I installed 4.5, all of my old info got erased (especially my contacts) Am I seeing things....or maybe not seeing things? Please tell me my wife wrong and I'm not going blind.
connect phone to activesync
look in activesync pulldown menu : tools> options
there u can set file sync and such..
its called sync toy in windows vista and its not part of the mobile device center
when u update the rom of the mda u can connect to activesync and it will ask for you to setup
the device... just press next and next and dont change anything and it will work as long as your
phone has the same name in it... (owner name )

Migrating to a new computer... any advice?

Hi everybody,
Im migrating to a new computer this week and want to make sure I do it properly without losing data.
Any advice for this? Can I export my activesync profile so the new computer recognizes the phone and data and doesnt tell me to start a new profile?
Any recommendations, advice?
thanks in advance!!
Dan
you don't need to do anything... if all the data you currently want is on your phone, just start using your new comp and it will sync everything. of course you'll have to set it up the sync though. you wont lose any data...
To be safe, make a backup of your phone's contacts. PPCPimBackup works perfect for that!
I am attaching it. just copy it to your phone. It takes a little while to start.

Transferring Contacts To A Non-WM Phone Without Using SIM?

I also have a Sony Ericsson W580i as a "backup" phone and I want to transfer all of my current contacts to that phone without having to copy all of them to my SIM card. Is there any way I can extract the numbers from my PPCPIM backup files?
Maybe there's a different way?
Thanks in advance.
Exchange/Outlook would be the most viable way, assuming the SE phone supports either.
If you have an Exchange server with your contacts on it, you could just connect to that. Failing that, you could sync your contacts directly to Outlook on your PC from your WM phone, and then back to the SE phone.
