Decent Web Browser at all? - Touch Cruise General

I got a new orbit 2 a few days ago, only to be dissapointed about the web browser capabilities.
I tried opera, but dont like how the fit to screen option distorts the page and desktop option makes the page become massive and difficult to navigate.
Also, is there anyway way of watching online videos SMOOTHLY?
The flash plugin works but its really choppy.
Not sure whether ill be keeping the upgrade, taking offers for it.

The choppy video is probably because of the driver issues (you can read more about it in the forums if you search a little)
And did you get opera 8.5 bundled with your phone? Opera 9.5 is much smoother and better looking than the 8.5 version (imo), and i'll suggest you try upgrading to it to see if there is any difference.

I watched the video regarding Opera 9.5 but its still not released, and by the looks of what I gathered from other forums, people are becoming impatient.
Im currently using Opera 8.65 and no it wasnt bundled with my phone.
So will those driver issues fix the choppy video playback?.
Normal videos saved to the device work fine its just the online ones that use a flash applet like dailymotion

Try Skyfire (you'll have to sign up for it), is really amazing, is very fast and smooth

Need to do some more research on it before you get it I guess.
Anyways, CorePlayer, TCMP player all play videos fine.
ALL browsers are FINE and work great for different things.
I myself use pocket IE for sites that are in mobile format, and opera 9.5 "beta" for sites that are not in mobile format. I would use opera mobile if it wouldn't install over my 9.5, instead of pocket IE, but all my text based sites work fine in pocket IE (ebay, paypal, howardforums, flickr, youtube, etc)
I don't really know who watches youtube videos or other internet based videos via their browser, I've always seen them being watched through TCMP, CorePlayer, WMP streaming or HTC streaming media.
There are no official driver updates coming.
I am unsure as to the technology that Dailymotion uses, but if it's youtube based then you should have no problems.
I think you are looking for a desktop in a pocketpc, which no one has quite yet. Maybe an HTC advantage, who knows.
Doesnt matter what phone you have, all software will run the same if the devices were made in the same time frame.
Oh and I assume orbit 2 is in Europe somewhere? None the less, Skyfire is available to U.S. numbers only apparently for it's beta. Maybe NetFront would work for you, try that. I hated it.

Have you tried Opera Mini? Their new beta v4.1 can be downloaded and really works great. My favorite browser so far.

try opera with limit paragraph on. that's amazing.

Opera 9 (beta) is working really well, especially for a beta. Panning in web pages is pretty smooth most of the time and as the above poster said, with limit paragraph on, reading articles on news sites, etc is doable.
The negatives are it is a beta so bugs here and there. Other issues are the touch keyboards (numbers only) don't work and neither does pocketCM (space between every character). I don't believe there is flash support in the browser either.
I use PIE for youtube/flashbundle combo.

whats flash bundle?

do a search on it. it allows you to watch videos from sites like youtube (the real youtube not the mobile version of it). those sites use flash video and the flashbundle is a plugin for PIE that enables that functionality in PIE.

I have the flash 7 plugin, is that the same thing?
Whenever i try and load the non-mobile version of u-tube on PIE,

You know there is a little round hole on the bottom of the device next to the USB called the 'Reset Hole"??? Put the stylus in it and you won't have to get the battery out....

Just search for TCMP and FlashVideoBundle cab files and install them.
When you go to youtube.com and watch a vdieo, it will give you an option of saving or playing the video. It uses the true youtube video not some crappy mobile version as said before, and it's really smooth. I watch cartoons and shows that way that i can't get on my tv, it's a life saver. really great quality and resolution for my cruise.

Try NetFront 3.5 for the ultimate web experience on a phone It's a class of it's own
You can get it here.
http://www.access-company.com/products/netfrontmobile/browser/35_wm_tp.html

Picsel browser is fast and smooth and does a nice job of re-formatting, also reads .PDF files and a bunch of other things
Opera mini 4.1 is very good for browsing although I don't like the way you input web addresses, and lack of file save features.
And for tabbed browsing newest Opera or Pieplus

If the player on the page is based on Flash then possibly yes...

I just installed Flash 7 and it hosed my PIE. Froze the phone and had to soft reset. Could not view any page with flash content. I uninstalled and I'm back to being able to view with TCPMP. So basically flash 7 is not compatible with PIE... I was thinking about trying it with Opera Mini but didn't even get that far. Is Flash 7 necessary with Opera Mini or Opera 9.5?

Not sure what the fascination is with playing YouTube thru the browser. I am not a real big YouTube user but I find that vTap is more than sufficient at playing whatever it is I need.

Skyfire 1.5 supports WVGA resolution on Leo :)

I've just installed it (you can download it from http://www.skyfire.com ) and is working nicely in WVGA resolution.
Thanks, just tried it out.
Not as fast as Opera 9.7 it seems and no multi-touch support.
Gonna try it soon.
Really wondering if this will actually work. It's cool now with flashfix for opera, but there are still alot of video sites I can't watch.
Watch any video
Looking for a free mobile video player? YouTube, Yahoo Video, any web video - you name it - it's playing on Skyfire. Skyfire is the only mobile browser that supports full Flash and Windows Media videos, including Flash 10 and Silverlight 2.0. You can even watch TV on your phone!

It really works!!! Even flash games on neopets work. So does veoh, youtube, vimeo and other sites. Much smoother than IE. Only lags if you try to zoom via pinching.
Works great!
Tested quite some sites, and most of them worked.
If you pan around the page, the video goes quite slow, but if you just stay on 1 place, it goes at a nice speed too.
YES it works! but it doesn't support video streaming sites that are regional I'm in Hong Kong and want to watch some documentary dramas and it says it's not available as I think their (skyfire team) is elsewhere
Great program though!
wow, it is MUCH slower than the previous version.
This is not quite actually wvga resolution, it fits the wvga screen of the HD2 but you can see is not as clear as Opera is. The flash, quicktime, wm player etc integration is indeed something that makes this app a must-have.
EDIT: Whoops, sorry, i now see that you guys were talking about the newly 1.5 version my bad, this one supports wvga i think
Pretty slow compared to Opera 9.7, but full flash support is definitely nice to have.
trying to get nba.com videos to work and doesnt which sux
Default Browser
Very insteresting.
According that I'm interessted by Skyfire only for flash pages, I would like to keep Opera as my defaut browser.
Is it the case after installing Skyfire.
Skyfire will give you options to set if you would like to make it the default or keep what you have now. I only will use skyfire for youtube PLAYLISTS watching and listening to programs as the YOUTUBE program do not do that I as far as I know.
Does Skyfire work in landscape. At moment everything in Portrait.
Wow - it is MUCH improved. Skyfire was always such a painful experience before
As for rotation - I suspect you'll need an app such as Gyrator to make it work. It works fine on mine.

Opera Mobile 10 memory leak??

Whichever ROM I use Im finding that a lot of the time my gallery will not open to view pictures, giving me the error 'unable to start the program because there is not enough free memory...'. To give an example, the error is happening now and I have a few apps open (including Coreplayer which is playing in the background and using 23% cpu) but it seems to be Opera that is causing this problem as even if I close EVERYTHING but Opera down with Task Manager it is only once Opera 10 is force closed that I am able to open my Gallery again. I have performed the same scenario, leaving Coreplayer etc running and just closing Opera Mobile 10 and immediately everything is running fine again. Anyone have any idea why this might be happening? There seems to be plenty of system memory available whether Opera is running or not so I can't understand it....
On a side note, I would LOVE to set Opera 10 to open YouTube links with the actual YouTube app (as Opera 9.7 does) instead of the HTC streaming app - which is crap quality. Does anyone know what registry tweak I need to do to enable this??
Opera 10 = settings advance plugins on i can watch videos on youtube this way
Hi thanks for your response but i think you misunderstand; when I go on m.youtube.com through the standard Opera Mobile 9.7 and select a video it opens up the YouTube app which plays in very high quality. When I do the same with Opera mobile 10 it uses the Streaming Player which is very POOR quality.
I want to know if there is any way of tweaking an Opera Mobile registry setting so that it opens up the YouTube app instead of the Streaming Player.
I am aware that you can go to the full site and view videos using Flash Lite but for me this is also poor quality compared to the h.264 streams used by the YouTube app.
I use m.youtube.com to view my subscriptions and favourites as the YouTube app doesnt allow it from within the app itself as the iPhone and Android versions do.
Thanks

have you recently opened a file rather than save it to sd?
This is a known issue - I've seen others report this on here, and I too have the exact same issue.
If I have Opera 10 running, I cannot open the Album app. As soon as I close Opera 10, I can. It's that simple.
I guess this is an issue that only the Opera devs can fix.
The strangest thing happened when I was testing Opera 10 on a Combo 1.72+2.10 Base...
I was able to open the HD2 Album WHILE Opera 10 Final was running...
But on Full or Mixed 2.10 Bases for TMOUS, Album would spit out the "Out Of Memory" Error...
Don't know why this is though, just reporting an observation
I think it was not the build but the order of opening that matters.

THat is because Opera 9.7 was built solely for the HD2 to make use of the multitouch. This is also why there are so many registry tweaks available as it is built into the ROM.
Opera 10 was designed for all touch screen WM devices, and as such works for the lowest common denominator of device.

Well, Skyfire seems to be the only Browser supporting FlashVideo. I had to make the same experience. But i gotta say Skyfire runs smoother and faster on my XDA Diamond than Opera does, so i never searched for an alternative browser.
I hope my answer helped you out a bit
i would say Skyfire would be the only way as of now..
opera is good but doesnt have full flash support
and ie only has flash lite..
the thing i dont like about skyfire is, the text isnt as sharp and smooth looking like on opera and ie also that durn checker board comes up! but the skyfire has come a long way since the very 1st time i used it
try netaccel mach5, has some nice flash video features with smooth playing compare to skyfire, its not free but has 15 day trial with full features.
Isn't Mach 5 the same thing as Skyfire?
I tried Mach5 and it works VERY nicely indeed.
It works different to Skyfire though.
For example, when I go to VEOH.com and play a video, I see the video starting to show on the browser then a pop up says that a video wants to play and asks me if I want to play it.
I say yes and it plays it from a separate applications and is a LOT smoother than on Skyfire.
Does the same with ABC
South Park is a different story though...it loads it on the browser instead of trying to open a separate app to run it but I get no audio and it looks slow although still faster than Skyfire....I contacted them about this. If they can fix this then it is worth buying for me.
Moved as not software release.
Not software related? Isn't Skyfire a piece of software?

Just tested it. Gotta say.

The pinch to zoom is horrible and I don't care if they can play flash. I'll wait for Froyo. Lol. Stock browser seems to be the best for me so far. Haha.

I agree, not running the way it does on the HD2. I will wait till the official beta release of flash 10.1 mobile!
It's nice, and playing flash is great, but it's pretty choppy.
I'll stick with Fennec for now, I can wait for an official Flash release.
Haven't tried pinch zoom, but flash playback worked flawless for me on tmo 3g. loaded up thedailyshow.com and was able to watch a full episode without an issue
Why don't they have this running like it was on my T-Mobile Dash 3G? This is garbage. No flash in the browser. Only flash videos. For example, Strong Bad Emails loads up on my Dash as it would on my PC, but with Skyfire for Android, all I get are those damn boxes with question marks in them. This is a huge let down. Not at all what I expected from Skyfire. As far as I'm concerned, this is fail. Especially with true Flash support around the corner from Adobe. Skyfire had a chance to beat them to the punch here, and they failed. Embarrassing if you ask me.
Doesn't seem to work with all flash videos but its still pretty quick. Anyone know of a good way to test this cloud speed compared to any other browser?
After trying it out for a few minutes i figured out that it does load most videos. I cant check hulu since im a canuck thought. sometimes you simply need to refresh the page and it will find the video. i also found that if you load up the video and it just shows a white box it will always freeze at 25%. This is easily fixed by backing out and reloading the video. Whenever i saw a screenshot of the video while it loaded, it always loaded full.
sites tried and all worked.
crackberry.com
ign.com
xvideos.com ( hey... its strickly educational!)
I cannot actually tell whether this is using the cloud as claimed or not.
For example, using opera mini and visiting what's my ip will show an Opera ip confirming that your days is traveling via opera and is bring compressed etc.
Skyfire doesn't - it shows my ip and renders almost identical to the stock browser. Pages do seem to load a but quicker but that could just be because I'm expecting them to.
maybe I'll run netstat and see whether skyfire actually connects to a skyfire server when rendering a normal page..

No need, I can tell you the answer:
All web pages/normal browsing is done on the device, and is rendered using webkit, and not through a proxy, a la Opera. This is the same reason videos can't be displayed inline. The only time the cloud is used is for transcoding video. If you were to watch a netstat while watching a flash video, you'd see your device connecting to Skyfire's servers.

That's pretty crap. One of Skyfire's attractions was that it worked like Opera Mini but rendered pages better. If its just the stock browser essentially with the ability to watch flash videos then it's of little value.

In my opinion, it doesn't work any worse than the stock browser, so it's still worth using. You're still getting the ability to watch flash videos(which has worked well in my experience), plus you get sleeker tabbed browsing and easy user agent switching right in the toolbar.
The only Flash Video I have been able to get to play are the ones on the sites pre-bookmarked on the Stock Skyfire Homepage. When it doesn't work, I get the Video popup, click on it. The video loads, looks like it starts to buffer and then, instead of playing it reads something to the effect of, Content not available for your device. We're sorry for the Inconvenience.
I haven't tested a lot of sites but no Hulu, no YouPorn, and worst of all, no Sirius Satellite Radio, like i could do on WinMo a year ago.
On the plus side, its nice to have the full Google Voice site available on the phone and Google Wave seems to be rendering nicely.

Yeah, I tried it on the daily show as well, and it worked great. Due to the way this is set up, it'd be impossible for them to cover every site. I noticed they do have a 'report non-working video' option in the menu, so people may want to try using that to help improve the service.
I noticed that you can pinch to zoom and with two fingers still on the screen you can scoll around the page.

I have to say, although I have barely used this new browser, I am very impressed with what I have experienced so far.
Excellent job.
It's similar to Mach5 Web, is there anything to do with it?
I like the browser. It will play Hulu videos. The only thing I don't like is that it detects videos and plays them in its own player. In its own player the videos are playing normal. If for example a site has a video ad then the clip you want to watch, the ad opens in the player then the clip stays in the browser and is very slow. If you try a video with Hulu, you will see what I mean.
Just to compare: Skyfire is blocked with Hulu, Opera seems to work but needs Flash 10
Brill
Fantastic - must be a catch somewhere. If i had to pay for this I would. Only issue so far is TVcatchup.com - won't play vids because it says i'm non UK - but i am. Any woraround for this?
Good browser only thing is that if video is detected it work like a charm
But if not you can't even watch the video it is very slow and you got now sound ...
So the only thing that should be improved is the video detecting mode.
Here is the website: uzard.com/en/main/main.asp

Well for example if you go to youtube. And you select a video you get:
Video detected do you want to watch it now. You press ok and you get the video full screen in Uzardwebs own player. As I already said this works about 60% of the sites sometimes it don't work.
And this is not opera this is just a complete different browser. So like you got opera, skyfire and Uzardweb.
Pretty fast and most of the sites I tried worked without issues. Much better than skyfire, but still not in the vicinity of opera mobile 10. Got a lot of connection errors, but that is to be expected considering it's still in beta. Scrolling is pretty bad, but at least I always got the desktop version of the webpage(especially irritating with opera). Gonna keep an eye on this one for sure!
I tried it just now..
Flash ,Browsing works for me without issues
Good Work
Best Regards
REALLY NICE ! Videos are working very well and speedly ! ANd not only on Youtube : all flash in working great !
Simply very fast !
Already love it !
Ps : skin editable by open the exe file on pc, but it's about 1000 files to change ...
also works with megavideo. although beta, is certainly one of the best around.
Tx a lot for this tip ! Wouldn´t have found it on my own.
It´s the first browser that fully works with my online aviation weather planning program "Skyview". Also shows iGoogle-page fully and clickable. Videos work nicely (with sound)
Although beta, seems to have good potential to beat skyfire, maybe once even opera.
The only pain ita is that it doesn´t save pwds and that rotation has to be done manually. Will try now to add it to rotation in BsB .........
Will have a close look on further devs of this nice browser.
Once again: Tx for hinting

Well for example if you go to youtube. And you select a video you get:
Video detected do you want to watch it now. You press ok and you get the video full screen in Uzardwebs own player. As I already said this works about 60% of the sites sometimes it don't work.
And this is not opera this is just a complete different browser. So like you got opera, skyfire and Uzardweb.
Click to collapse
I didn't get that on hulu
the flash played natively in the browser but no sound =/
I'll try another video site
