Sprint's Samsung Instinct - Any opinions? - General Topics

I've only had T-Mobile for 6 months and I've already had 4 warrant replacement phones, and I'm getting royally screwed with them. I'm going back to Sprint, now that they have a new CEO who's vowed to clean up Customer service, and because of the Simply Everything plan (outstanding).
I am not going to be financially ready to pay the early termination fee for T-Mobile (or buy a new phone) until June, which conveniently is the unveiling of the Samsung "Instinct" which looks like an outstanding phone.
I was torn between the Instinct and the Sprint Touch... Any thoughts/comments/opinions on this?

well i was just about to start a thread if there wasnt one already... im really suprised that this phone draws so litte attention from the xda crowd. but now that i think about it none of the other iphone closes do either. any way the phone is not windows mobile based so your going to loose all the functionality and customizibitly that all the guys here love so 99 percent of them are going to tell you touch. you need to look in to the driver crisis with the tilt touch moguel and a few other devices htc class action google it up.
as far as the instict goes though im pretty sure im going to get one i work at sprint and get a free service from them so its either the instict or the music. i know there not very close to the same but i love the music lol
the instict for me is still up in the air till i get my hands on one

I just have a question about this whole Java problem with the Instinct. You can't use Opera Mini because the Instinct won't allow 3rd party apps to use the keyboard because they don't have the right kind of Java. Is there anyway somebody can "rip" the Java off of the Instinct and update it? Or is there anyway you could just install the right Java. I'm not really sure how this works but I know there are some pretty crazy hackers/programmers here at XDA and It would be awesome if just one of them would try to help all of us Instinct owners out.

Don't get me wrong, it looks like a nice little toy to have, but get the Touch! If it was possible, I'd say try both for a week, and I'd bet you would keep the Touch.

[Q] Upgrading on Sprint

Hey all. So I have been available for an Upgrade on Sprint since Dec 1st. I have been passionately holding onto my Hero, lovingly flashing it with new Roms to keep my hopes alive that it is still awesome.
I read an article that as of April 1st, we will be losing the $150 upgrade bonus, dropping it down to $75.
I have been holding out on my upgrade for the next 'big' thing after the Evo, but it just doesn't seem like that will happen in time.
Now that I have made it almost two months without upgrading, I am starting to lose my cool. Especially with the possibility of losing half of my upgrade $$$.
Should I just jump ship to the Evo, or does anyone have word of something I should hold out for? If not I am going to go get it today at 3pm!
Well supposedly they are making the change April 1st. Your yearly upgrade would dissapear and you would be stuck until your 22nd month of your contract before you upgrade unless you have been with Sprint 10 years or have a plan that is like $80 a month, basically their top plan that hardly anyone uses.
Anyway, I have not heard any news of a new Sprint phone. They are having some announcment in the begining of Feb but who knows what it will be. You would think we would have heard of a new phone comng to them by now which means even if they announce a new phone it probably won't hit until the summer at the earliest, especially since the Evo isn't even a year old until then.
I always say buy a phone when you need it unless you know for sure somehting is releasing right around the corner. I would go for it. You can return it for 30 days if you see some huge announcement of a new phone from Sprint in Feb. Either that or pay the ETF to leave Sprint and buy one of the big new shiny phones in a couple months from another carrier, which is a long time to wait when you want a new phone and kinda spendy when you factor in the ETF. Though it wouldn't surprise me if lot of people will be doing that with Sprint taking the yearly upgrades away if they don't announce a new phone.
I dont really see any point in changing carriers quite yet. Sure the Nexus is a sexy piece of hardware as well, but Sprint has not done me wrong yet.
I was all about the Evo on launch, and was prepared to get my gf on Sprint with me as a family plan just to get the damn thing. Thankfully enough Sprints servers were down due to all the action on Launch day and I didn't get it. I have been holding out since, assuming something better may be around the corner, and neither the Evo Shift or the the Samsung Epic have done anything to sway my desires (I hate slide out keyboards). So I figure I may as well be a late arrival to the Evo family and take advantage of all the awesome ROM's that have been developed and tested into the ground. I can see spending a year with it.
Not to mention the Evo is more than equipped to get me through the next year, and into Android 2.3 realms.
This might be a stupid question, (sorry if it is). But what exactly is happening on April 1st? So there will be no more $150.00 discounts after two years? They're bringing it down to $75.00?

i dont think u can beat this deal anywhere. I got one 2 days ago and now thinking about rooting the bloody thing but christ it seems awfully hard to do and then sticking a rom is even harder compared to my old tilt 2!!
wow what a deal... do people really think this phone is worth that price?? i personally think it's better than the atrix (minus the laptop dock)

It is not as hard as you think, all you need do is read the threads and take your time, I rooted a long time ago when bubby first did the one click, since then he has made it less complicated, the hardest part most are having is making a gold card, just take your time and you will do fine. I am rooted and am running Core Droid Gingerbread rom and have no sign of AT&T left on my phone. It is great, give it a try!!!! You can do it, the only thing holding you back is you!!!

Oh yes you do! You have at&t on the back of the phone
Sent from my Inspire 4G using XDA Premium App
I got better than that from AT&T directly. Free phone, no shipping, no activation, 2 yr contract extension, early-upgrade. Granted I've been with AT&T since 1999 and I give them a decent chunk of my paycheck every month.
You just have to be patient with them, be willing to stay on hold for a bit, ask for a supervisor, and remember a few key phrases: "Long time customer..." "Pay bills on time..." "Been loyal through Iphoney induced network problems..." "Other carriers offering better equipment, and with contract expiring soon..."
That has always worked for me. The phones aren't always free, but I've always gotten a better deal than the normal upgrade price. At the very least the rebate price without dealing with the rebate. I've even gotten an upgrade price on an equipment replacement without contract extension.
Not sure if there are specific guidelines they use as far as longevity, monthly service charge, etc. You just have to be polite and insistant, and companies will generally give you what you want to keep you as a happy customer, AT&T included.
woww that is a deal and a half))my son just came home from school and he said his buddy told him that more people are bricking their phones when they try rooting... but then what does a kid know)))
They have it marked down to a penny if you buy it online with two year upgrade.

any way to make AT&T match this deal? The wife just paid 99 bucks for hers when I added a line last week.
shoot I'd just pay the restocking fee, and then buy from costco and it would still be cheaper. I am not sure att will match it though. I know you can't buy it out of contract Online. I was looking to see what they would charge maybe get my wife one so she can get away from her captivate.
I got mine free from radio shack and I was expecting to pay For it. Don't know how I get it free though
I got my Inspire from Costco about two weeks ago, and then upgraded one of my kids to one last week as well -- took advantage of that Costco deal! And no, AT&T could care less about price matching.
I rooted both of our phones last night. Read more than I did before I flashed my Tilt 2, but after my kid said just watch the Youtube video, I was ready. LOTS and lots of steps, but his rooted exactly as advertised. I did the same steps to mine, got hung up on the final step (pushing the new ROM back to the phone) but found a post in @bubby's thread about the same issue; I manually copied the image to my SD card and entered the bootloader, and now my Inspire is rooted as well.
Lots of great deals out there, BTW. Look at Cartoys and Radio Shack; the Costco deal ends pretty soon.
i got mine from Costco, i only paid the tax and an upgrade fee which will show up on my att bill. id say i came out on top
I just checked ... price is 1 cent now with a 2 yr extension. May have to go to KC!!
I too got mine from Costco for a penny! :-D According to tracking, I'll have it Wednesday. And then...we root! :-D
On a sidenote... I only agree with one line on here. "However now more then ever who you get on the other end of that line MATTERS." ...Unfortunately, this is true. I am a Level 2 technical support agent for Philips Electronics. If you catch an agent on a bad day, then don't expect much. HOWEVER... I personally try to remain fair... If you call me and ask for support, you BETTER be nice. If you are a jerk, yell, cuss, racist, etc...YOU GET NOTHING!
I deal with all walks of people on a daily basis. Kindness is key. It also helps to know how to speak and speak properly.. "Key phrases" mean nothing to me. But that's just me. It's all about the attitude. If you are nice, I'm willing to GIVE you almost anything. If you are an A$$hole...well...you get the idea.
One final note...It DOES NOT matter what nationality you or the tech support rep are. One of the nicest people I have ever met is this guy that sits beside me at work. He is 100% Irish, and hates the world. But again...if you are nice, he will give you whatever you are asking for.

I have an Atrix, not worth it at all... Even with the Dual Proc and Laptop dock. Call quality sucks, signal sucks and worst of all, it seems like they took someone's custom ROM (Alpha Build) and released it (get Aqua/Robot Voice at times) and instability so they have to make a fix for it and THEN wait for AT&T to release it...
Thanks, but no... not at all worth it.
The Inspire though? Yeah, worth way more. I paid full price for mine (no upgrade available on any of the 5 lines... )
I got my Inspire from Costco for $19.99. It did not take too long either. They also gave me a free car charger, head set, and leather case.
On a side note: I don't like ordering things like phones (Atrix) or laptops(Asus) online because if their is a problem with it takes week to get there and get back to you.

How much off contract and from where?
I tried buying it though Costco online but I wont let me keep my grandfathered unlimited data plan. I still cant decide whether to use my upgrade or buy it off contract.
I've been seeing lately that its now $79, and as a CostCo Member, its as low as $50 on a two year contract. Its still a great price.
Staples has it for $50, verified as of yesterday.

[Q] Getting rid of my Androidâ„¢ devices. What now?

So the $130-140 per month we pay for our family plan of 700 minutes and unlimited web + text on the NexusOne and LG G2x, is a little steep right now.
I have to say, we are leaving Androidâ„¢ for a little while.
With both of us unemployed, I should probably stop buying the latest Androidâ„¢ device that comes out. And I promise I'll stop AFTER I GET MY NEXUS THREE! lol
So I just sold my wifes old Motorola Defy.
I am in negotiations to sell/trade my beloved Nexus One, and also the G2x I just bout two months ago.
Now that just leaves wifeys old MyTouch 3G.
I just bought a Nokia N97 (I might let her keep it as she kinda likes it).
What do you all recommend?
I had a Nokia N73 for a while, then sold it to buy my first HTC Dream.
I've never owned a BlackBerry.
But I'm open.
I would say I am a little media-centric. I take lots of pics and share on Facebook. I used to LOVE editting with PicSayPro before uploading.
I text ALOT!
Facebook a few times throughout the day.
Games, very little.
Go for HTC HD2, since it can run many os'es like wp7, wm6.5, ubuntu and even android, you will never feel like your phone needs android. And if you plan to switch back to android later, you can just install android easily and use it. And the price is not too high, so it might be suitable for you or ur wife Good luck on choosing one.

I found one, US Tmo HD2 / extra battery.
I hope he replies!

So I've been told I can DOWNGRADE MY ACCOUNT and get this HD2 and request some sort of basic data plan with T-Mobile?
I just had my Google Voice number changed to my local area code after moving from Fort Worth. So I woulnd't even need any text messaging plan, right?
Found another here.
Is $200 good?
I just shot him an offer.
I use an Evo on cricket for 35 dollars a month (wifi only). Sure the inital cost is 200, but once you have the phone its like you aren't even paying a monthly fee.

I don't want to leave T-Mobile.
It's a worthy alternative. But I want to avoid ETF.

Worth it?

Hey guys, so i have been wanting to try out WP7 for a while, i have an opportunity to snag up an arrive on contract. since im on sprint there doesnt seem to be much going on in the WP7 area. id love to have a titan 2 like device or even one i know is going to get the latest versions, however that doesnt appear to be sprints concern.
anyways long story short is it worthwhile for me to put my epic 4g touch off to the side for while and snag the arrive and give it a run for its money? or should i hope that some day sprint brings another windows phone out? (preferably with a bigger screen)
I really like my arrive, WP7 is a great OS, but please do keep in mind that this device is getting long in the tooth. The arrive was brought to sprint over a year ago.
The DFT rom is great and enables internet sharing.
I'd only go for it now if you are enamored with the idea of a hardware keyboard. Otherwise, I'd wait until the summer to see if sprint brings a Nokia WP in.
http://www.sprintfeed.com/2012/03/sprint-developing-lte-windows-phone-with-fall-release-in-mind/
Sprint apparently has a new windows phone in the pipeline but it wont be until the fall, I havent seen any other rumored windows phones for sprint. I love windows phone and the arrive for the most part suits my needs but there is definitely some apps missing when compared to iPhone and Android.
Hope that helps.
I switched to Sprint and grabbed the Arrive when it came out ($50 on contract at the time). I love the phone and love the OS, but I'd hold off because I expect Sprint to feel the Nokia love before the end of the year.
The two gripes I have about the Arrive is that it's only 3G and I don't even have the option for ICS (sans custom ROMs which I'm waiting for those to shake out a little more before I take that plunge). Those aren't major gripes, just the two biggest issues I have with the phone. If you don't just totally hate your phone, I'd stick with it (or look at getting an Arrive from someone who didn't like it and is selling it used). Save your upgrade for the Nokia and I think you'll enjoy it even more.
yea after a bit of searching and deciding on it all im gunna try and pick up an arrive on teh cheap and us eteh upgrade on the new one...
sadly they still want 50 dollars on contract for this phone :/ which is teh same amount as the photon which is less then 10 moinths old

I have had my Epic 4g since launch and after trying Win 8 Preview I wanted to try WP7. I went to a sprint store and tried the Arrive and I liked it. So, I found a refurbished Arrive on ebay to try out for $150 shipped. I'm up for an upgrade. But, I know the flagship phones are coming out at the end of the year and I will save it for that. Have you thought about buying an off contract phone and waitng for the phone you really want?
fwiw you can get the arrive for free on contract from wirefly
I just got this phone due to a finally dead TP2. Rest in Peace TP2. I will miss you so very much.
I really don't know why this device isn't more popular. The keyboard is basically the same as TP2, (best ever), and the phone is lightning quick. It's made very user friendly. Slide to what you want and the learning curve is almost non existent. To each their own I suppose, but for me, I will be happy with this device.
i was waiting for a GREAT wp7 on sprint but couldn't wait any longer. Picked up a used arrive today for fairly cheap and man I'm loving it so far. It's so fast compared to my ancient tp2. I've already downgraded spl, rspl/hspl, and flashed dft gold_c v1. Great rom so far. I'm loving ie9.
I agree to others that it is not really worth the contract for this because of it's age, but I still love this phone a lot. Of course I didn't have a chance to try an android phone(or native android phone, I tried the android port on TP2), so I can't say this is better, but it fit my taste.
Now, serious question, how to load 8107?

On a scale of 1-10, how hard did we get screwed by LG?

If I see another crappy metro/huawei or no name device with sub-par or similar hardware compared to our phone running official ics, jb or cm10.1 I'm going to grab it and light it on fire. When I bought this phone it was a toss up between the galaxy s2 and the g2x. I bought the g2x because Mr. T-Mobile man talked me into it (they were the same price.) This was before I really knew anything about android as far as rooting and custom firm of course. This device could easily be given an official ICS update at the VERY least. LG screwed us, hard and long. On a scale of 1-10 I give this screwing a 9, ONLY because the amazing developers we have here stretched this device to its absolute limits and continue to do more. If it weren't for them, well I don't even want to think about that. So on a scale of 1-10, how hard do you feel you've been screwed by LG?

I'd actually rate it as a screwing of 10. The awesome quality of roms, updates and patches that the developers here have provided doesn't change the fact that LGE ****ed us over. I made A LOT of noise about this to Wind Mobile here in Canada early on because I didn't quite understand that it wasn't the carrier holding me back (Wind's P999 is still officially on Froyo if I'm not mistaken ... I installed CM7 immediately so I don't know if one update ever made it out).
Nothing but love for everyone here who tried to squeeze some additional life out of this device. Hell, if giveen manages to get the radio working (others have tried previously) then I'd say the G2x can once again be a half decent phone.
It's truly a shame that a vendor as large as LG would treat a community of consumers so poorly. Never again LG, never again ...
I'm going to say almost no chance off me getting radio to work. I'm being honest.
I've looked over it, examined it with a few other dev's and a couple programmer friends and everything points that it should work, the only thing we can't look at is the precompiled RIL
I don't think they screwed us that bad. From the get go lots of people had issues with this phone and chances are they have a new phone by now. I've had mine for 2 1/2 years now. Its the only phone I've been able to keep. Yes a working ics would be awesome but when I bought the phone I had no idea what any of that was lol. I played w/ a nexus4 and even though it was cool didn't feel the need to spend all that money for features I wouldn't use. Everything I need to do I can do on this phone. So on a scale of 1-10 I would give a 5 only because they screwed alot of people from the get go.

That's too bad, but knowing the amount of effort you and others have invested no one will complain (or shouldn't at least )
As soon as my contract is up and I can dump this phone without having to pay the remainder of the "Wind tab", I will be glad to move on to something that's NOT an LG product.

Yeah, I am pretty disappointed myself. I came in here thinking that it would be a snap but I ended up stuck just as everyone else.
Its always proprietary files that are the issue.
It's not LG, not really. It's the carrier. Cheap ass carriers like wind (froyo) and tmo (gb) are the real fault. It's not Tegra either, since p990 got ics.

I'm pretty sure it is LG though. If LG doesn't release updates to the carriers, the carriers can't spend months and months injecting bloatware into those updates before releasing them to us. the suckers ...er customers.

Then why did T-Mobile get GB and Wind did not? Wind ROMs have no bloatware at all.
From what I heard Wind didn't get the update because they didn't sell enough sets. That to me kind of makes sense.

In the absence of a valid argument, 2+1=3 may be used to explain why the g2x did not get the ICS update!

What contract? if you want out buy the phone from them. Really and truthfully you are buying the phone either up front or to cancel the "contract" they do not hold you in nor charge you more then needed to pay for the phone. I still don't understand why this concept is so hard for people to understand.
i would give a 9 for my experience with LG. within months the headphone jack went bad and would barely hold the plug, the usb port is crappy, and sometimes wouldn't charge properly (both were denied under warrenty. The lack of updates is the biggest issues. The only reason this phone had life is because of the Hard work of modders then they went and fudged all that with the new base band update that broke the Bluetooth for modded phones.
At the time this was suppose to be their flagship phone, it was also the beefiest and fastest phone on the market, I was told like may others it will be updated only to get nothing out of it. Worse is that they allowed and branded it incorrectly in the Canadian Market.
I'll give it a point since it was built like a brick, i have dropped it so many times (after the aforementioned issues) and it still kept chugging for just over 2 years, eventually the screen went weird and acted like someone was constantly tapping it so i swapped it with an S4, a phone i know for sure will be supported and i can actually find proper accessories for it. The price point of the Nexus 5 is temping for sure, but when i check most cell phone stores in my area They carry mainly iphone and samsung accessories, which make up over 80% of the stock in some stores. This goes to show the popularity of the phones

It's not hard to understand at all, it just kind of sucks. The "original" price was $350 for the phone, which the Windtab covers (and nullifies at the end of 3 years). After 24 months, the tab is sitting at $290. I could buy the phone out, but it seems like a waste of money. I'm otherwise happy with wind so I'll keep an eye out for a replacement phone and just wait another year for the "contract" to expire.
I tend to ***** about the G2x mostly since it seemed to hold so much promise, was dropped very quickly by the manufacturer, and as a result I've got something that can't be updated, but I still have to pay for. I probably wouldn't complain as much if I'd already finished paying for the phone

The original premise of Wind was no contracts, you buy a phone from them full price, choose a plan, choose a payment option (pre or post paid) and done. People wanted subsidized phones so they brought out the Wind tab. Here you are paying for the phone AFTER you used it not before, there are still no extra fees for it if you want to leave early. And it's 24 months, never has it been 36 months. In the end you are still buying the phone and used it for quite some time now, except now for you it's $290 vs $350, you still saved money I don't get how It's not worth it?
Initially wind tab would take 36 months to pay off, after the CRTC changed the rules all the providers have now switched to 24 months. Only customers who got the plan after the rule change get the 2 year tab, the rest have to complete the full 3 years

This was more of a gangbang situation. Lg got some, nvidia got some, and T-Mobile got a piece too. And if you're unfortunate enough to be screwed by wind they seem even more despicable still! Wind definitely deserves a 10.
Lg 8 for putting this particular modem on this particular phone.
Nvidia 4 for being present lol
T-mobile 5 for acting like this phone was the poop and then tossing it like a dirty diaper.
On the brighter side a lot of us are reaching the end of the line with this thing and if nothing else it's been a great learning experience. This phone is so picky about kernels and settings and charging that we've had to become super disciplined about how we treat our phone or else it burns your nightstand. Plus having witnessed the long and frustrating journey of many devs pushing this phone just a little further each time has definitely enlightened me on how hard these guys work for something we all profit from. Holy crap this post got long! My bad. Carry on.

Granted but he shouldn't really be complaining about the price of a phone he bought a year ago and using all this time, he should pay the price of when he started using it, not how much it's worth a year later, it's really just a selfish attitude
