Fix / Work-around: Comm Manager Randomly Opening - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III Windows Mobile ROM De

Thanks to AllTheWay and DARNOLD for finding the fixes. AllTheWay got the perfect combination of comm manager and task manager to FINALLY fix the infamous "random comm manager" issue. Darnold came up with the reg-edit.
The problem:
-The issue is with the comm manager, and task manager. The problem is this: Once the comm manager is opened, clicking the "x" button will only minimize the comm manager. You will be unable to actually close it, so when you open another program, slide the keyboard open, then slide the keyboard closed, and close the program..... the comm manager will pop up as if it were running in the background the entire time.
Clicking the "x" button does not close the program, and you will not see if running in the task manager. However, if you are using the "quick menu" task manager you will see it. Strange, huh?
This has been tested and has happened using duttys roms, and duttys task manager, with his comm manager. ALL GREAT PROGRAMS BY THE WAY!!!!!
The solution:
-Since Duttys roms are so awesome we can't help but use them...we will install a different comm manager which will resolve the conflict.
-Soft reset the phone (so the comm manager will close)
-Download THIS cab file (Schap's 6 button comm manager)
-Put it on your phone / storage card and install it.
-Soft reset your phone, and PRESTO!!! No more comm manager issue.
Thanks for reading, and thanks to EVERYONE who gave input on this goofy problem. =)

Just figured out the issue!!!
The problem is not with the TaskManager but with the Comm Manager itself. I installed Poorly Duck's Comm manager and the problem has disappeared.
What's nice is there is a plethora of comm managers out there...and I don't know if Dutty has any real time to mess with this at the moment. So the temporary solution to this problem would be to use a different Comm Manager.
Try installing this 6 button comm manager by Schap's and let me know if it solves your problem.

I'm sure that I'll be bashed about for this but I really don't care. Everyone here already knows I'm snarky and I just don't let go of a good idea.
That being said, I have to ask...with there already being several threads about this problem on at least two of the three Kaiser forums, did you really have to make a new thread just to announce this? Wouldn't it have made more sense to ask the OPs of those other threads to change the subject to begin with "[Solved]" and edit the first post with the fix information? Adding more threads only further mucks up searching.
And since we already here, do you want to update the Kaiser wiki with this and the other fix listed in those other threads or shall I?

Heh... yes there were a few different spots. In some threads (in the middle of about 100 pages)... and a couple random threads about it. I figured i'd put it all in one spot. Yes, I could have just updated one, and asked someone to change the title... but guess what, i didnt think about it and here's a thread that has it all anyway.
Booya!
Now go update some wiki's

if you are referring to "connmgr.exe" being in the task list ... read more about it here:
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa459113.aspx
it is REQUIRED to be running !!!
~~~
the Comm Manager I think you are talking about have a shortcut pointed to "\Windows/CommManagerLink.exe" which is a DIFFERENT EXE !!! and it is NOT in my task list at all after I closed it.
on a side note ...I used "WkTASK" ... whenever I click EXIT in comm manager's page ( bottom left softkey ) ...it won't closed properly, it will shows that it's still running ( yes, shows up in Quickmenu's task list as well )... but when I click the top right X ( WkTASK as my task program configured to closed with X button ) ... it definitely closed the program ( no surprised random pop up and NOT in QuickMenu's task list either )
When you said "clicking the X does not closed the program" ... could it be that you have never set the option to closed it when clicking the X ??? ( (whichever Task Manager you are using ...etc) , I know that most are default to only minimized ... and click & hold to closed ...etc ... check your settings !!
if I'm totally off topic ... then ignore what I've pointed out ... as I've seen many people mixed up between -->> CONNECTION MANAGER & COMM MANAGER
Na.. this one is specific to the "comm manager" not the "connection manager". The fixes listed above both work great, and another user "AllTheWay" is looking into making a cab for this.
TBH I use quickmenu and it always closes comm manager... maybe thats why I didnt get the problem... oh and I have just installed the 10button version of comm manager and its pretty awesome too...
mine closed fine the way it is with WkTask ...
Yea,... but does it close without using the task manager... by just clicking the "x"? Most peoples doesnt...
most people have atleast one favorite "task manager" ... I used WkTask ... works fine ...
not sure what you are trying to ask here ...
I don't know if any one else has this problem but I installed Schapps Comm Manager to solve my pop up issue. However, the wifi button in Schapps couldn't turn on my Tilt Wifi. I could still turn on and off wifi from connection manager but not Schapps.
Here is the fix.
HKLM\SOFTWARE\HTC\CommManager\WLAN\DeviceName - change the very end of the string from whatever it may be to }\TNETW12511
Schapps install changed it to something else on my Tilt. Changing it back to the original registry setting of Dutty's rom fixed it.
The simple and obvious fix is to configure your Task Manager, or the default one, so that X closes apps, not minimize. That configuration is everywhere and multiple programs offer to customize it besides the default Task Manager.
It's a problem that WM6 solved a long time ago.
Open running applications instantly?
Maybe a strange topic title but this is what I mean:
When I have PocketInformant running for example in the background, it opens instantly when it is selected from a TaskManager like pBar (wich I use). When I want to acces the programm using a normal shortcut from my startmenu it has some delay before it opens.
Does anybody have any tips or ideas about this?
You kinda answered your question yourself. If it running already it doesnt need to be loaded....
You are correct. But I wanted to know why a programm opens instantly when you open it using a task manager. While opening it using the StartMenu takes more time, In both cases the programms are already running in the background
I actually do understand your question because I noticed that too. When a program is alreading running in the background minimized and if you select it using a task manager of choice, it opens up quickly since it was just minimized where as if your where to go through programs menu and run the program shortcut again, there is some delay. I think it is because its closing the program or checking if it is already running that is causing the delay. Don't know for sure actually
i'm not sure if it works the same way as in desktop windows, but here it isl like that...
when you want to code a program that can be launched only once you put a specific section in program's startup part, that checks wether another copy of the process isn't already running, if no is found application starts normally, if it finds previously launched copy it terminates.
now i'm not sure how does it work here in wm5/6 as it happens with all the programs, so probably it is more os dependant, but if i'm right the delay comes from the fact that taping a shortcut actually runs the program again in the first place...
banannq is absolutely correct. This is how things work in WM as well.
When you click a link to the program or its exe file directly from file explorer it is launched again even if it is already running.
If this is a big app like Skype or PI it will take time just to load the exe so even if all it has to do is close right away there is still a delay.
The task manager however calls the program copy already running directly so there is no delay.
Thanks for the explanation!
Now I understand what was driving me mad
So opening programms from a TaskManager is the fastest way to work with you PPC. Or maybe run a today plugin that has a running programms line. I believe the O2 plugin has this kind of functionality.
WisBar Lite and MagicButton (both free) add a running programs icon list to the top menu bar so you can more quickly task swap.
I use pBar for this, works like a charm
The funny thing is - this is exactly the kind of thinking that brought M$ to create the ever so hated "smart minimize" concept and spawn a hoard of "close button / task manager" applications like magic button.
It is nice when programs start right away, but the trouble is RAM on WM devices is still stuck on at very low limit. Now, if we had devices with 256 or more MB of RAM we probably would not need to close apps.
Removing the system tray WM5 & WM6!!
ah ha amen!
I've searched for months for an answer to removing the system tray on WM5 & WM6
Edit your registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/ Software/ HTC/ Trayapplt
Export the Trayapplt string just to be safe you can merge it back if you change your mind.
Once exported delete the Trayapplt string completely and then soft reset your device.
System tray gone and the space is usable
Enjoy
You could have just removed the Init_Tray.lnk in the windows startup folder.
I afraid for most people that doesnt work as they dont even have that link file. I think the difficulty with the system tray is that different people have different circumstances. Some people can remove the int_tray link but If you search the web your'll see a lot of people desperate for a alternative method as they do not have this file on their devices.
It maybe the case that my method may not work for everybody but until someone produces a stable app to remove the system tray we'll keep searching for the best way individually to achieve this.
Sorry, didn't realize that that link didn't exist on all WM devices, but I haven't owned every device to know that. There are however programs that force the system tray such as DotFreds task manager and MyMobiler, etc, which even removing the Init_Tray.lnk doesn't fix because the icons will create their own system tray. Does your fix for it stop them from doing that? If it does, then I might just have to try your fix out for myself.
So far ive been running this setup for 2 days.
I use xcpuscaler which 110% uses a system tray icon whilst running. Ive also minimised many programs and the tray has never reappeared. Im not garenteeing this will work but I do know that its worked perfectly for me.
I hope this helps and if you export the reg as I sugested if the tray doesnt stay hidden for you for some reason then you can always merge it back
Hmm, my kaiser doesn't even have that key so I guess I'm out of luck there. I'm not sure if my wizard does or not, I'm working on cooking a new ROM for it and the ROM I have on it now is kind of messed up. I'll have to check it out when I get my new one cooked though.
fair enough, it seems to be very device related, im talking intensively to a strong programmer to try and sort out something permemantely.
Im running a XDA Orbit (Artemis).
Willl post any findings here
sorry it didnt work for you
No TrayApplt in my registry, unfortunately. Still can't figure out how to remove the tray bar on my Vario II (WM5) permanently. Whatever I tried, nothing worked to my satisfaction..
Edit: No Init_Tray.lnk either! Still looking for solutions, every solution is very welcome as long as it works...
My Tilt doesn't have that key either. I don't use the tray, have it disabled, but Task Manager always creates it again, until I exit Task Manager.
My Wizard doesn't have that key either.
Programs I have found so far that may cause the system tray to appear:
- Dotfred's Task Manager
- My Mobiler
- Pocket Informer
- SOTI's Pocket PC Controller (or similar: I don't recall its name)
- SPB Pocket Plus
All of these can be made to not create a system tray through their respective settings or otherwise, I believe. Currently I have MyMobiler, Dotfred's, Pocket Informer and Pocket Plus installed, and I have no system tray on my Kaiser. The above registry hack didn't work for me.
Is the Treo Pro Task Manager available as a Cab?
I have an 800w, and was hoping to find the 320x320 TP HTC task manager.
I've tried the other one's floating around and even some modified to work with Real VGA on a 320x320 screen, but none work with a regular 320x320 screen.
here's the files.
now you just need to make the cab.
Actually, you might be able to just copy the attached files to the 800
Thanks Berd.
I wish I knew how to "cab" it up so that if it went awry, I could just uninstall it via add/remove.
I might just dump the files in my Windows directory and see what happens, but I'm not confident that it'll work right if I do it that way.
I was thinking, though. Perhaps I could download and install one of the other HTC TM cabs, and then overwrite the files it installs with these from the Pro. Then, theoretically, an uninstall of the TM might result in uninstalling the replacement files...
Either way, do a Backup first (Sprite or Otherwise).
That way you can always do a Restore and undo any issues that may arise.
Well, I needed to do a real hard reset anyhow, so before I did, I just dumped it all in my Windows folder. No luck.
Perhaps someone else with more knowledge than me can figure this one out.
Thanks again for the ROM dump, Berd. I'm betting some good use will come of it via zbop, hannip, ebag, etc.
Task Manager Quick Menu
Has anyone found a way to activate the HTC Quick Menu from a button? The Task Manager is great for stopping programs but the HTC version also allows switching between running programs. Unfortunately, it requires a thumb press on the screen top right, an awkward place for me to reach as a lefty. I can't seem to find any exe that does that function. Anyone found it?
Thanks,
Mike
For the Task Manager you are correct. But that only allows you to stop programs. I am looking for a way to start the Quick Menu (a part of the HTC Task Manager package) that allows stopping and switching between programs that is only available from the X close on the today screen. I have tried all the apps that are named quick*, task*, tsk*, qtask*, etc but cannot find the one that runs the drop down Quick Menu. It is possible it is one of the DLL's that can only be started by another app.
Thanks,
Mike
The Treo Pro has the built-in WM task manager (taskmgr.exe) in the windows directory. I created a shortcut to my programs and use it instead of the HTC provided one and this one workds great.
I'm pretty sure there should be some reg edits associated with this but here is a cab for it.
TIP to get rid of Phone Call and Text Notifications (SCRIPT Notifications)
If you are wondering why your device is suddenly slowing down and lossing memory. This might answer your question...
Everytime someone calls your phone, any miss calls, any text messages you receive, any voice messages, etc... there is a SCRIPT Notification generated that can accummulate over time and this can eat up your memory and processing time.
To get rid of them, I use Check Notification: http://www.scarybearsoftware.com/product_detail.php?productname=checknotify
Has a very small foot print and can be installed in the Flash Disk. Just go to it's settings and check the 3 boxes, run the application and clean all those unwanted SCRIPT Notifications.
I am pretty sure there are other cleaners that can do the same, if you find them, please let us know which one and how to configure them correctly.
Thanks...
excellent, just what i was looking for
because, as described, i've been experiencing that problem quite often, and it is very annoying, when you have an almost $2000 phone, and people ask you "why it's soooooo slow"
--- EDIT ---
it is kinda weird, but after installation, i can't find it anywhere, i even used windows explorer can't find the install path, WTF?
Did you install it in the Main Memory or Flash Disk. It should be under Program Files/Check Notifications.
If you still can't find it, use this extracted .exe file from my device. You can place it at your Flash Disk or drop it in the Windows Folder. Just create a shortcut at Windows/Start Menu/Programs
ATTENTION!!!!
In many cases after cleaning, using this software, the notification queue your device doesn't sync anymore.
The program isn't designed for WM5/6/6.1 and remove ALSO the Activesync entries (ow WMDC entries if you use VISTA).
You have to use MEMMAID to recreate activesync entries in the notification queue! (or hard reset, or recreate manually the entries, using some tools)
Works well on mine. Never erased anything other than SCRIPT Notifications, otherwise I would not have posted it here. I don't know why it erases your active sync notifications though. I have been using this software since day 1. It is the second application I installed after SKTools.
If this ever happens. Just use the attached file. Place it in your Flash Disk and run using File Explorer. This small utility will recreate the lost active sync notification allowing you to sync again. There is no need for a bloatware software like Mem Maid.
Thanks for pointig out activesync fix utility. As I've told also you can use to fix"memmaid OR hard reset, or recreate manually the entries, using some tools"
The activesync checknotify problem is a random problem, but I had it since first WM5 on IMATE Kjam (HTC WIZARD) and is still here. I've tested yesterday (X7500, Michy's 6.1 ROM) and I've manually recreated replog entries because the device won't sync anymore neither with WDMCon VISTA nor with latest activesync on XP
As tool I suggest FDCSOFT taskmanager http://www.dotfred.net/TaskMgr.htm (from dotfred) freeware Wm6 application (enclosed in many cooked ROMs)
It has all the notifcation queue feature needed, remove duplicated, remove scripts, (just choose the notification tab on the top) and many more features, as start/stop/select auto-manual services, regedit, ipconfig, ....
One thing I don't like about using MemMaid and Dot Fred's Task Manager for the removal of SCRIPT and duplicated Notifications is: it is not automatic. You have to manually check it and then confirm you want to delete it. Too many things to press after a day of text messages and phone calls.
Using Check Notifications on the other hand, it does it automatically for me after pressing CLEAR.
[REQ] Comm manager
made a search but didnt come up with what I wanted...
what I'm looking for is the comm manager with 3G --> GSM mode among the options
I had it on my topaz, but I'm not quite sure which chef used it, if it was Dutty or some of the other 6.5.1 ROMs
thanks in advance
haven't found anything yet, but making a shortcut to CMBandSwitch from /windows folder seems to work for now
You don't need a comm manager. You can put the 3G option in the default one using Advanced Config. I did that (I like that option too) and it works like a charm. You'll have to give up on one of the existing entries - I chose Push Mail, as I never use it.
hm, had no Idea about that - will give it a try then, thanks for the info!
do you use any special AC (is there a general one for wm 6.1/6.5 or are they hardware specific?)
Nope, just use the last version (3.3 if I'm not mistaken).
got this over at the tweak thread i think, haven't tried it myself though, still using the windows built in but maybe someone else is interested
I'm trying to use CMBandSwitching.exe from the command line in order to be able to script 2G/3G switch over.
I have GProfile running and when i invoke a "Power Saving Profile" i would like to call the CMBandSwitching.exe from the command line and tell it to switch to 2G.
Is anyone aware of such parameters?
Thanks !
