Benefits of Hard Reset After Flashing New Rom? - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III Windows Mobile ROM De

Hello, I have an AT&T branded Tilt, and I flashed the original HTC TYTN II rom on it. I thought I followed all the steps to flashing a new rom correctly. I realized today that I didn't do a hard reset once the screen came up saying “Tap the screen to begin to set up your windows-mobile device”. I just went ahead and let everything install and installed all my apps and settings. I have never performed a hard reset on this device at all. So my question is, if I do a hard reset now is that the same as if I was to do it when the “Tap the screen to begin to set up your windows-mobile device” dialog was showing? Or do I have to flash the same rom again and do the hard reset when I was supposed to?
The reason I ask is that I am having some issues with activesync, and some wifi issues that I just resolved. Also, sometimes the device screen seems to freeze up for a few seconds, and then recognizes the tap on the screen later. I don't know if these are common issues, or is it because I didn't do the hard reset.
So again, do I need to flash the same rom again, and then do the hard reset when I was supposed to, or should I do a hard reset now?
Thanks!

At first when I read about the hard reset after flashing for some reason I thought it only applied to cooked roms. Is that right or wrong?

Doing a Hard Reset after flashing is a "best practices" step. It isn't mandatory and failing to do it doesn't mean your phone will suddenly implode. It's just that doing the Hard Reset clears up so many weird problems that can crop up after flashing a new ROM, cooked or otherwise. If you aren't having any problems, then don't fret over it. Wait until the next time you flash a ROM to do it.
And yes, the Hard Reset will erase everything back to the beginning (i.e. when you unboxed the phone or when you flashed the new ROM...whichever is more recent).
I also suggest you read through the thread for whatever ROM you flashed. Many times things like WiFi and Activesync oddness is specific to that ROM's build and will be discussed there. That is also the reason to post problems in that thread...you'll be talking to others running that same ROM.
As for the screen tap issue...it's common and should be around here somewhere on these threads. I would point you to the search function and to the wiki...but I'm sure you've alread used those.

Het thanks Jarek91. I read the link for "ROM Flashing FAQ for Newbies" found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=356895
And I didn't find anything saying to hard reset, that is why I didn't do it. I only came across this link today which is the "things to do before and after flash": http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=1846653&postcount=800
I wish it had been in the instructions for the rom flashing faq for newbies.
So with my issues do you suggest re-flashing the rom and doing the hard reset method?

reflashing more than likely will not benefit anything. however HR is really to clean out any small hang-arounds and tidbits from the previous rom. You can HR at any time. However, remember by doing so you will have to reinstall all apps previously installed.

You don't have to flash again to do the Hard Reset, you can do that at any time...it just takes you back to the base flash (in your case, the base HTC Kaiser ROM) without any additional programs or changes. So if you do that, make sure you backup any data you want to keep that is stored on the phone itself like contacts, sms, mms, etc...

Even though I would like to, I don't think I am ready (noob) to edit the wiki, sorry
I know that the hard reset will erase all my settings and apps, but my main concern is that even if I do the hard reset now, I didn't do it at the “Tap the screen to begin to set up your windows-mobile device” screen.

The reason we say that is it's right after you flash and before you actually go through any work setting up all the customisation you're going to do. After all, there's no need to set your timezone and install apps and align the screen if you're just about to reset the device and have to do it again...now is there? So the timing isn't critical to it fixing things, it's just the best way to do it so you don't waste effort with configuration that will be lost in the reset.

Oh Ok! Thanks! I will post my issues with activesync and the screen freeze in the appropriate place and see if they can be resolved. I really don't want to hard reset because I will lose all my settings and apps.
Thanks again!

As rom flashing will remove everything already, I really don't see the point to HR after rom flashing.

Actually, I think that's the point and was mentioned in several posts above. HR will remove the sniggling remnants that could be left over from the flashed over ROM. Apparently, flashing doesn't necessarily do it.
I, too, initially thought that this might be a "belt-and-suspenders" and totally redundant step, but it seems to make my Dutty 6.1 ROM work perfectly. I used not to do it (but found the advice suggesting me to do it in Dutty's latest ROM post), and usually ran into problems.
Doesn't hurt, and I'm just guessing that the chefs who suggested it might have a good reason.
But what the heck, I still throw spilled salt over my left shoulder, so perhaps I'm the wrong person to be commenting...

Rom flashing is just like formating yr hard drive (flash rom in our PDA). Nothing is left, and the flash rom will be rewrite by the rom image you supply for the flash process. HR simply goes back to the state right after the flashing, and there's really no point to HR after flashing.

Hi Jackleung. Since I am a noob, no i am even more confused about the Hard reset benefits. You say it is pointless, and others say it is beneficial? Is there anyone else out there with an opinion?

Anyone at all??

He can say what he wants. He is entitled to his opinion just like everyone else...but I have seen both personally and by posts of others that HR after flashing does indeed fix a wide range of odd problems that crop up. I couldn't tell you why it does...because Jack is essentially right. Flashing is like formatting a hard drive and reinstalling the OS and apps...but doing a HR does make a difference for some reason.
Perhaps someone with OS experience could give you a more detailed answer. I can only offer what I've seen.

I got a question, what does it hurt to do a Hard Reset after rom flash and prior to setting up your phone? Absolutley nothing. So why not do it? Exactly, there is no reason why it shouldn't be performed. As for me, it has helped out many small issues, such as screen freeze, lags and the likes. It has now become a standard for me and it takes up all of about 5 seconds after a rom flash. So again I ask, why not do it? What can it hurt? Now, I say, if you don't want to perform a Hard Reset, then don't but I will say that if you have problems right off after a rom flash and you post your question, then more than likely the first question asked back to your question will be "Did you perform a HR at the "tap to align" screen?", to which your answer will more than likely be no and at which point the suggestion given to your problem will be to perform a HR.
In other words, do what you want but remember it sucks having to do one once you have already set everything up.

I agree with Jarek and I can also give you some of the reason why. I have done countless flashes and can tell you that it makes a difference. I would love to do a poll of all the people on xda that have had a bug on a fresh flash and hard resetted and then not had the bug anymore.
Think about a hard drive. If you reformat a hard drive you are NOT completely erasing it. The information on a hard drive is always there. You are freeing the space but the information is still there. Ask anyone that works in any upper tier law enforcement agency and they will tell you that it can be extracted with the right tools. I had some friends in the military that did exactly that. The only way to erase a hard drive is to smash it with a hammer. On our phones even after reflashing bits of the old rom can still be behind. By hard resetting you are in a sense defragmenting the information and writing it into a more orderly fashion. A hard reset statistically increases the chance that the information is written to the exact location in memory that the designer intended.
Thats the best explaination I can give its been a long time since college.

I have to agree with doing a hard reset. I am by far, not an expert, but when flashing a new ROM, I now always do a hard reset. In the beginning, I sometimes didn't do a hard reset. There always seem to be a little bug pop up here and there.
Since I having been doing a hard reset, the ROM's work like the creators have stated.
Plus with most of the ROM's using UC, it makes it very easy to reinstall your apps.

Believe me. Things from oprevious ROM's can get hung up in NAND. Some times you can have provisioning issues as well. It's always best to HR before & after a ROM flash.
If I go directly from an AT&T ROM to a WM6.1 romm occasionally I'll have 2 system message accounts. If I HR before & after, this issue never occurs.

Im with GSLEON3, many times the flash procedure is what I call faulty.
Its was mentioned that its like installing windows on a clean HD...yeah I agree
I often format my HD on my laptop (kids use it ) and I install the same os from the same cd, but the os behaves diffrently from time to time, and everyone who installs os frequently would notice this, if not im surprised.
And so many times when ppl has complained about slow or sluggish roms, and I have advised to HR,they often come back and say it helped out alot...
cant argue with that...

First of all... let me address this before someone rips you apart here. Your question (if it is one) is a bit difficult to read. I am certainly not an english teacher but maybe a period here and there would make it easier to understand. Because I honestly don't know if you are asking a question, stating that you're having a problem with reflashing, going back to factory settings or other. I mean I had to read it 5 times!
Secondly... if you do a factory restore from the settings and you get the flashing android on boot you should let it keep flashing for a few minutes. You need to be patient because it is wiping all of your previous data/settings and restoring them to default.
Third. If it stays on the flashing android for longer then say three to five minutes (depending on how much you need to wipe) then go ahead and boot up in recovery mode and do a wipe from there. If you still get stuck on the flashing android then yes... reflash.
Fourth. Do not assume it is an app that causes this problem unless you are CERTAIN of it. Hundreds if not thousands of people have downloaded this app (including myself) and have not had a similar problem. Maybe do a search for the app name and read what people are saying about it. If it is the app then believe me you won't be the only one commenting. If you're lucky there will be a fix so you won't have to wipe or reflash.
Finally... every so often (especially before making a major change like apps to sd, themes, etc) it'll be a good idea to do a backup with Nand so even if you do end up messing something up (by app or user error) you can always reflash your image to your phone.
Good luck!
EDIT: Whoops! Wrong thread!
I'm very sorry for my poor English but my story is after installing ahome
everything was fine until I rebooted my phone. After rebooting the phone I
tried dialing a number and when I pressed a number once the it would dial
the number twice for example when dialing 7 instead of only dialing the
number 7 it would dial 77, or when using useful switchers turning off the wifi I
would try to check the wifi on but with one push it would check and uncheck
the wifi. Later I did a factory data reset and rebooted the phone I couldn't get
past the flashing android. I reverted back to stock rc33 just in case its a
hardware problem I can let t-mobile know thanks for the replies
i doubt it's a hardware problem.
i had the same problem, coincidentally after installing aHome; i was unable to get past the "flashing android" screen. The first reboot that i did, though, was after using the JF auto-updater app, so i'm not entirely sure where the problem lies.
long story short, i wiped my system, and am now in the process of installing Windows and the Android SDK to my system so i can do a restore.
thanks im gonna go back to root then
yeah, aHome still has lots of thigns to be fixed specially that force close issue every time u return to home :/ i liek dxtop better dont feel like scrolling tru 10 pages like the iphone..

HELP!!! serious problem.... help please!!

Hello there,
I have a serious problem. A while ago i flashed the energy rom to my device and it worked great. Now i can't use my phone anymore because it was a beta version? I've searched the forum, and i saw more of you got the same problem.
And i've read that it's possible to reinstall windows on my device but..
I typed serious import texts with notefolio and windows note creator program thing, i need it for my job,, Is there any way to retrieve those text files? It's not on my SD card, so it must be in the internal memory.. ****
My laptop makes a sound when i connect the USB cable, nut i can't see my touch pro in ''my computer'', it seems it won't connect...
Please please help me i'm desperate
thanks allready
Greatings,
Bouke
Mine just did the same thing and im about to leave the country. Have any suggested new builds?
Energy Rom Craps Out
My phone has also taken the time trial sleep, any help before I reflash. XDA should make it known that acts such as this do not happen again. I have donated to the development of this site, now wondering why & if I will do it again. Please help with a fix other than reflashing.

I dont think theres any way to undo this thing. just happend to me this morning. I was able to get a start menu, but all the apps I start, start under the message.
BUT, since I got enough reminders that this version I flashed was going down, I see not more than to just accept this failure .
So I held down the vol- button en pressed the reset button with my stylus, now I its flashing a new ROM.
Good luck
yea i tried that aswell, but everyting is beneeth the message.
And indeed it's a huge FAIL from the energy rom developer
I'm still hoping for some reactions that may help recovering my valuable text files..
If i flash a new rom it will erase all the data on the phone memory including text files notefolie etc. right?
Greatings
unfortunately yes. as far as i know there is no chance of getting them out of there. but you installed a custom and private made rom - that is to some extend alsways a risk and you should back up all the things you have on your phone when you do this.
good luck
i too want to get a few things out of the phone.
the stuff that still works is htc sense, and anything started directly out of sense, but not any shortcuts to programs.
you can access it by locking the phone, then unlocking it.
it will give me access to sense ui.
so i'm now pretty much looking for anything that's left to help me start a backup program.
any ideas on how to add a program as a service?
maybe with sd autostart.
does that still work?
all we need is to get the phone to run one lousy backup app.
maybe even automated.
we need ideas! ;-)

My phone locks on long end key.
If I press that and unlock again, the expiry message disappears for a while.
Sense and some Programs started directly from within work. Not the home screen links
However, I cannot start programs from links or access the internal memory.
Is there any way to read this while in "boot screen" mode?
If you can get some things to work, then pull your sim card out, and sync to a pc. If the syncing works, set the pc's date back a few days, and see if the rom starts working normally, then back up what you need and re-flash.
If you can't sync, just try to fix the date on your phone. A soft reset may be required.
Doesn't work as Sense crashes when I try to set the date.
Maybe it works for other people.
Sync does not work as that is blocked.
I tried changing the timezone immediately after it locked but that didn't work either.
So I suspect changing the date back wouldn't do you any good.
In other words: I don't see any way to recover any data from internal memory.
I'm going to do a hard reset now as I don't have time for this.
I conclude that whoever decided or implemented this timebomb as is, is a complete asshole and I hope he gets eaten by wolves in his sleep.
Disabling a product after a beta phase and/or forcing customers to update is perfectly fine, destroying their data in the process is unacceptable.

I totally agree with that. I don't have time for it either, and i've already told my supervisor the good news..
Does anyone know a good working smooth ROM without the crappy time bomb thing?

Stock UI not as crappy after all

Well, I've gotten my tablet for 5 days now and have been playing with it a lot, tried all the different ROMS, anyways, upon receiving the tablet, pretty much nothing worked, e-mail app wont launch at all, a lot of the stuff in the settings crashed when I try to change them, just figured something out today after going back to stock rom, I formatted the internal storage and did a factory reset. Upon startup, I notice that it went through a TnT wizzard which I never got when I first received the tablet, and e-mail and all other apps are now working, and no more FC (still crappy, but atleast it works). I really think this is the problem viewsonic has, the devices didn't come factory reset, or atleast mine didn't anyone else's tablet didn't run the setup wizzard when you first received it, or is it just me? Because I really think they would have a lot less returns if all tablets came and started the setup wizzard on boot up as mine didn't have any problems at all after the reset/format. I tried the 3361 update and wow, its actually decent now, VS is definitely listening to the community when they added the ability to use the regular launcher.

When I returned my first GTab to Sears I did a factory reset. When the person at the store opened the the box and turned it on it didn't go to the wizard. I believe that the power button can activate during shipping and after a certain amount of time it skips the wizard and then shuts off. VS should put a piece of paper inside the box with instructions on doing a factory reset FIRST. This could solve a ton of problems for new customers
There's a new one out - just see the vanilla ROM's section in the faq, in my sig. I'm going to post a link to the new ROM, shortly.

I already gave them links to the FAQ, new stock fw, and two threads for flashing original stock fw...
To get the setup Wizzard you must first Format you Internal Storage (Settings -> Storage), then do a factory reset (Security -> Reset to Factory). Once you do this the gTablet will shut itself down, then when you start it up you will get the wizzard, just doing a factory reset alone will not do this, you must format the storage + factory reset. Anyways, all the FC I had prior to doing this are now gone, I really think that after doing Quality control at the factory, they never did these steps and so the tablet comes borked with bad softare which can easily be fixed with this 30 second format/reset.

[Q] Android NAND ROM need help

Hi, today i tried to install this ROM (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=893620&highlight=android+2.3). I stuck to this video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cvS4EvS0PAw), but now i have a problem: i came to the step where i must run the ''ROMUpdateUtility.exe''. I followed the steps and when there should be an install of the new ROM file it's gone from 0% to 100% in like 3 seconds (that was wierd because it should take 10 minutes) , but when it rebooted it simply stop by the white screen with the green HTC logo...i cant even factory reset it. Please help me, what should i do to repair my phone
Have you tried the hard reboot? If so try restarting the device by holding down the down volume and the power button. I had this same issue and after many tries and re-installs the device stared to function again.
i have foxed it all...and installed the android, it works perfect. If there wasnt a problem with the Wi-Fi...can somebody help me with it
And where the hell is the ''Folders'' app so i can install applications onto android!?
suggestions
I admit I am a novice and I attempted to do things I shouldn't have done without research, but I read and read as everyone suggests in this forum. I watched video after video to make sure that I was doing things right. I still bricked my phone, as many people do, but I think I was mislead. I FULLY accept my responsibility for what I did. I would just like to elucidate some shortcomings of this forum without any malice.
You guys have a lot of power! You are very knowledgeable, and we as novice developers, who wish to do fun stuff with our phones, rely so much on your expertise.
I was able to successfully flash Android onto my SD card. It was awesome. I was loving it. But I kept reading that NAND would be much better because it would boot straight to Android without having to enter Window's Mobile first. I read that battery power would last much longer too. So I found out the way to flash HSPL3, MAGLDR, and NAND. It was working fine. But I liked the earlier format of the previous ROM running off of the SD card. So I figured out how to switch to another ROM.
It was on this forum" HTC Leo: > HD2 Android > HD2 Android NAND Development>" that I read in step 2 to "You should flash stock official Windows Mobile 6.5 ROM." I did, and ended up bricking my HD2. A post-bricking search of what happened revealed that it was apparently my fault that I had previously flashed my Radio to something that led to the system failure. I read somewhere else that if my 3G wasn't working to flash the radio. So I did.
What I am upset about is, that there was no mention made nor warning given in the above forum to ensure I hadn't already flashed my radio to something I shouldn't have. Nowhere on the page is there any information warning of ill effects by flashing to earlier ROM if the Radio was flashed too. I did exactly as I was instructed and flashed to stock Windows Mobile. So I have a heavy mirror as a result. I will try and go back to T-mobile and get something under warranty. They actually told me to come here to learn how to get Android on my HD2.
So my bottom line is just what Uncle Ben (Spiderman) told Peter, "With great power comes great responsibility." If you allow your developers to post phrases like "You should flash stock official Windows Mobile 6.5 ROM" you should also be sure there are no ramifications for performing such an action.
That's all. I'm still happy with the forum, it enables us lay folk to do some awesome stuff with our hardware. Please try and be more comprehensive when it comes to potential adverse effects. Have another person or committee edit the process and make sure that nothing is left out. I guess that is why it is in the forum format, but as a novice, you don't allow any comments regarding installation so I couldn't post there. Maybe someone else can save another phone if they come across my situation. Possibly add a new policy to have the administrator run through a checklist of things that could go wrong with each step before publication?
Hopefully with your power, you will get thanks and admiration for disasters averted. Keep up the good work!
Thanks,

[Q] LGL45C factory reset problems

Hi all, I come to you all in this time of great need. I have in my possession a LG Optimus Net or LGL45C as its know technically.
I started to suffer from problems from gapps resulting from uninstalling the Google Talk app(yes doing this in retrospect was incredibly stupid). After failing to resolve my problem when trying to re-install it, I decided to take the easy way and just do a factory reset and start from scratch. Little did I know what was to meet me. I was given the "Touch to the android to begin" screen like so many others, but it was not meant to be that simple. I would touch the android, and it would light gleefully but it would not reveal to me the next step and sit there motionless. So I proceeded to the next logical step, touching each corner in succession to skip the setup process. But no matter how many times I repeated it, nothing came of it. Next I booted into recovery mode(stock I never bothered to install CWM, another one of my mistakes) and did another factory reset, clear cache, etc. This too did not work. And I thought, there was always installing CWM through ADB where then I can then just flash to a stock ROM I downloaded. But Alas!! USB debugging some how got disabled and it was all fruitless. A little google-fu later I came across a method to flash .kdz using obscure LG utilities. With renewed hope I followed the steps but to no avail. Now I come to you stranger, and plead you in somehow help me in recovering some use of this phone. I have exhausted all my options and I hope someone out there read this and comes in my time of need. Sorry for the long block of text :silly::silly::silly::silly:
Having the same problem as you, bookface.
I couldn't install CWM from the links provided in another post, all lead to a 404 Dropbox page. This sucks. And when I tried to use the installer from Play, I got a dialog saying it's not compatible. Some would say to ignore it, it would be fine...
But if something doesn't feel right, don't do it, I've always been told...
So, I was rooted, but phone started acting funny. Done a factory reset. Since I didn't have CWM, I thought it would clear that mess up.
Nope, almost all apps crash. I'm lucky that at least the browser, Gmail, and music apps work, but everything else, including Google Play Store, all crash upon launch.
Net10's forum is a lame excuse as a "forum." Seems like TracFone employees have NO concept of how a forum works. I looked at there for the same issue, and they rather take software/hardware issues to private messages?
I have NO computer, my hubby's friend who helps him says "You have an Android tablet, that is a computer!" Technically, yes and no. Since I can't root that thing, it's useless. (If you want to know, Polaroid PMID709 4.1 with Rockchip RK29xx, and impossible to root fully, it's "semi-rooted".)
And I'm lost. I and my hubby need this phone to work. Because we need it fpr work (our jobs). And I'm getting sick of TracFone screwing up Android ROMs.
Please help!
youve made much more headway than i. trying to help my neighbor with his. he set a lockscreen password on his lgl34c and then promptly forgot it.
so upon a bit of research, this model is a doozie to work with. i had intended to overdeliver by flashing him a ROM that might allow some hotspotting and the like. upon closer inspection, i dont believe that i will be able to do that. at best a towelroot...
but ONLY IF i can get past this lockscreen. i've tried to factory reset by:
1) removing/replacing battery then holding vol down+power and waiting for LG splashscreen then releasing power (still holding vol down ) and then re-pressing(holding) power again
2) turning phone off and holding home+vol up+power and holding 30-40 sec
ive repeated both methods many many times, and these are the only methods that i have seen described in my google searching. in fact, yours is the most advanced post i have found yet.
how can i factory reset this phone without access to the settings menu?
