O2 should send you a 3G SIM with your Orbit.
If you're already with O2 (on a 3G service) then I think your old SIM would be fine (and they might choose not to send you one).
If you're with O2 with a plain GSM only SIM then it will work in your orbit but only in GSM mode.
then connection icon next to the signal strength shows "G", or "3G", or "H" depending on what sort of connectivity you have.

i had to get a new sim card for mine.
the tip i got from o2 was that if you look at your sim card, it has 3g on it.

yep says 3g on it, thanks.

it doesn't matter if you have 3g sim or not, you should be able to connect to 3g anyways, it does not depend on the sim you have. 3g sim just offer more memory

In Australia, the Hutchison 3 Network is a 3G network and as such uses Telstra's 2G to support it when there is no 3G coverage.
That being said, Hutchison 3 use a type of hybrid Sim card that doesnt work with any of these dual sim devices.
Another example of this odd sim card choice is that it renders all Mercedes Benz owners who have Bluetooth Car kits useless. (I spent literally days testing) and this is because even though the Bluetooth will pair up, the MB car kits try to use a 2G antenna connection to get onto the network. Even though it ends up using the phones internal antenna.
Is '3' in Europe strictly a 3G network? Because im at a total loss as to why the MB would do this.
It may seem off topic but its related enough to be shared here. (although it probably could have its own thread)
I can't say anyhing about he hybrid sim you are talking, but simore dual sim works with 3g sim.
3 in Italy is only 3g, I do not know in the rest of europe
It's quite weird your experience with the MB CK, I tryed several time with no issues...

Hi,
Could you try something for me.
Set your handset to 3G only, then see if you can connect to the MB CK.
If you can, then i will have to put it down to the Hybrid SIM.
Thanks

Hello
For me it is working fine, but before I had the problem until I remove the pin code pin on my sim card.
Means install the sim card to a normal phone and remove the pin code for the sim car. Plug it again into simore hardware and try again.
Hope that it well solve your problem
For phone call and sms it wrking fine, I still have issue to switch internet from one sim card to on other one. The last point is that you have to root your phone to use internet (but internet not working well)
No need to root if you want to use only phone call and sms

XDA Mini S / UK 3 Network

I have just upgraded my O2 XDA Mini S to an O2 XDA Orbit. I'm trying to pass the wizard on to my son who currently is in a monthly contract with the UK 3 network. Both the Wizard and Orbit will not recognise the 3 sim. I've searched widely and find a lot of conflicting opinion but some say that the 3g card will work on a 2g phone (albeit talk and text only without the 3g frills). Does anyone have any advice. The wizard is unlocked and accepts O2 and Voda cards. Is it the O2 software that needs replacing or is it that the card will never work on this particular unit.
Thanks
Three Network now has both GSM and 3G coverage for a full UK coverage. As such, it *sometimes* works on non-3G phone. Depending on your area, I think. But, in general non3G phone (i.e. the Wizard) doesnt work well with Three

Thanks for the rapid reply. Yes, the fact that 3 backs up on to Orange to give full coverage set me wondering. The phone will not even accept the sim - saying no sim or invalid sim. Is there some kind of barring actually operating on the sim to prevent it's recognition by any phone other than a 3 supplied unit? Odd one this.
Well, the common one is SIM-LOCK phone, that the case where the phone is locked to a specific SIM only. i.e. A-SIM in A-Phone, B-SIM doens't work in A-Phone.
However, it is unlikely that you have a Phone-lock SIM, or rather, barred IMEI. That is, the network only works on phone (i.e. with the IMEI) that is registered with the network. Hence, A-SIM will not work on B-Phone because B-Phone's IMEI is not registered with A-Network. Technically, you can do that, but I can't seems to see what's the business benifit of it. Further, you may check this buy going to their website and see if they are selling SIM only package. If so, they are unlikely to be blocking unregistered IMEI, more likely they (the phones) are not compatible with three network.
If you were to go to the Universal forum, there are people using Universal (a 3G phone) with Three Network. I'm not sure if these phones are from them, but my hunch is they are not.
Thanks for the info
Regards
I have this problem on mine too i wan to use a 3 sim in mine, mine is unlocked to all networks but three sims dont work, believe three sims are a different type of sim and thus dont work in phones not designed to take that type of sim, as my bro has a newer pocket pc phone and m sim works ok in that, think iv read somewhere they use different voltages or frequecy or something?!?

[SOLVED] About to go mad -HSDPA on T-Mob UK not working - T-mob techs don't kno why!!

Hi,
I had this problem now for about ten days or so. The HSDPA on my TP WILL NOT connect. I have the greyed out "H" icon at the top and when I try to connect I get the message "Dialed general.t-mobile.uk. The answering modem disconnected". T-Mobile reckon everything is all perfect on my account and have refreshed my account, disabled Web n walk etc etc all to no avail. This IS a service problem and NOT my phone as when I put my GF's SIM in all works fine. PLUS when I put my SIM in any other phone I also have no 3G access. In a Nokia N95 I get the message "packet data unavailable" and in a Z1010 (SE phone) it just doesn't work. My GF's SIM (also t-mob with w+w) works fine in all phones.
I've tried all sorts of settings to no avail. I also can't find anybody else with this problem other than here:
http://www.expansys.com/ft.aspx?k=114438
This is the greyed out icon I'm getting:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=105843&d=1218616120
GPRS works perfectly by the way.
So has anyone else experienced and solved this problem in the past? I'm getting desperate now! Thanks for any help in advance.

Old sim cards made even within the last few years are not necessarily 3G capable.
first thing i thought as well..
does your sim work in an other phone, do you get HSDPA on an other phone?
I'm glad I've had these suggestions as this was the first thing I thought of asking for. But before they send me a new SIM they have to file a ghey network report and asked me to time and date five times I've accessed the network blah blah blah. It's obvious its not the network 'cos another SIM works fine!
The SIM card is about 4 weeks old. It worked for the first two, then one day stopped out of the blue. The SIM doesn't work in any other phone either. It's clearly a problem with my particular account or, the only thing left, the SIM as you say.
The only thing putting me off thinking it was a SIM corruption is that I thought the whole SIM would become defunct not just the HSDPA access part of it. I thought it would simply just not work. However, I'm hoping I'm wrong.
Thanks for your help guys. I think I'll ask them to send a new one out to me. Is this usually a huge problem or can they simply deaden the one and just swap it over to a new one?
Another other suggestions welcome..

I've ordered a new SIM from T-Mob today. Will report back on whether this fixes teh problem or not...

I'm on Vodafone, which is apparently HSDPA compatible but I've never once seen the 'H' icon. I get 3G all the time, 3G+ when using a data connection but not an H...
Is the 3G+ icon voda's interpretation of HSDPA or am I missing out? I'm using the same SIM card I got with my old N95 a year and a half ago, the phone was a Vodafone store in-store upgrade.
Edited to add - I've also seen a 3.5G icon on it too, I've heard that transposed with HSDPA too - is this right?

Most likely "3G+" is HSPA (remember your raph is capable of both HSDPA and HSUPA so its classed as HSPA ).
When you see "3g+" run Fieldtest.exe (in \windows) and select the HSDPA tab, if there are values populated in the various fields (which are non-zero) then you have HSPA working.

Spot on I've actually found out that rather than use fieldtest.exe (found it eventually, damn hidden files!), that if you click on the 3G+ icon on the icon bar beside the Start menu, it actually says "Contract Internet (HSDPA)" as opposed to the plain 3G one saying "Contract Internet (3G)
Why must voda meddle with everything?!!

Not true. SIM profiles will change and when you upgrade to a new data network the older SIM may not have the full profile and can't get it via SIM OTA.

you guys do realize that ATT is marketing their 4G, when its actually only HSPA+?
also, you seem to think that the SIM card is going to need to be changed for '4G' speeds? why? the only thing that needs to change for '4G' is the hardware has to support it.
SIMS cards do need to be changed from time to time because of types of services or network upgrades.
Older SIM cards may still work but that doesnt mean you will always get full network/sevice potential.
There is good reading outside of XDA about this if you search a little, and ignore the junk search results

What's this then:
http://www.bgr.com/2010/10/21/att-starts-switching-to-lte-compatible-sim-cards/
Cingular changed their UICC profile (SIM) in 2005 when they introduced ISIM and USIM profiles to support 3G. Now to support LTE, they've introduced... wait for it... a new SIM! OMG!!!!
BTW, LTE unlike HSPA+ uses a totally different core called EPC and thus has a different APN and several other new profile settings.
BTW, BTW, APN is typically a device driven setting and NOT a UICC setting. There's a difference.

Z3 Dual D6633 SIM compatibility / issues

Hi, I've got a Z3 dual D6633 which I want to use with an EE SIM in the UK. I've tried a cut down microsim and been into the EE shop and tried one of their nano SIMs but both don't work correctly in the phone.
The cut down SIM makes a service phone.android.com or something like that continually crash and doesn't connect to the network.
The one I tried in the shop just doesn't connect to the network.
This is on 23.0.F.1.74 and .82 I noticed in the release notes for .82a fix for Yoga SIMs in Russia but don't know what the problem there was, but wonder if it is linked. All other UK Sims work including 3, Lyca, giffgaff, Vodafone, virgin just not EE. has anyone got an EE one working or had similar problems?
I did notice that an app/widget I use called phono to show network info and signal strength usually shows the IMEI when no SIM inserted or the MSISDN, however with the non-working EE SIM it just shows 00000 - not sure which field it is getting wrong. Oh and yes the SIMs work fine in all other phones I've tried.
I do need to try more tests on factory reset and removing phono etc but so far it looks to be a firmware incompatibility with EE Sims.
OK, so I did a few more tests and got hold of another nano SIM on EE.
So it looks like the 23.0.F.1.74 firmware does not like EE SIMs and the phone application constantly crashes. On the later .82 firmware it works fine. I was mislead a bit by going into an EE store and trying a SIM - they must have given me an un-provisioned SIM to try. I stupidly assumed they would have actually given me a SIM that worked, doh!
I'm experiencing something similar here. I have the D6633, bought in UK, now I am in Brazil and the phone works great except that it won't connect to the 4G/3G/2G/LTE network. I can make calls, send sms normal. But internet only over wi-fi.
I called my operator, they say the phone is configured correctly, I tried my brother's sim card from another operator and the same happens.
So, the phone is clearly unlocked, if not it wouldn't recognize the sim cards at all. But no connection to the internet...
Any suggestions? I already did four factory resets, I recovered the Rom using sony software...

I purchased my D6633 from Saudi Arabia and the 23.0.F.1.82 update came as an OTA notification about a week ago.
If you look in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/z3/general/d6633-z3-dual-updated-to-23-0-f-1-82-t2929352/ it mentions that someone thinks the update has only been released for Saudi and Brazil - I assume it is for Europe as well as one of the release notes says a problem with Russian Yota SIMs has been fixed. I think there are also links to the firmware in there although I've not looked that hard as I got the OTA. I guess it might still in my memory - anyone know where Sony stick their OTAs?
Seems to work fine so far - no noticeable difference - well other than EE SIMs now work!

Hmmm, sounds like another issue as with mine the EE SIM caused the phone.apk to constantly crash/restart.
Did the data work OK in the UK?
As you can make calls/SMS I assume you are at least on a 2G network which should still give you (very slooow) data - It does sound more like an APN issue - or something else. I know you said you checked with your operator what their APN settings should be (just my experience with operator customer support lines) - but I would try and have a look yourself - and maybe list your APN settings and operator and someone may spot something.
I have seen a couple of phones / operators where the "APN type" in the APN settings needs specific settings - its down the bottom and often isn't mentioned when people get the settings. For example in my current settings I have "default, hipri, dun, supl" for Virgin mobile in the UK.

Hmmm, sounds like another issue as with mine the EE SIM caused the phone.apk to constantly crash/restart.
Did the data work OK in the UK?

It was working fine there. Here It apparently could not download APN settings, so I installed an APN APP and now it works fine!!!

Just a thought, but is it definitely a 6633 and not some other variant which perhaps doesn't work in your country/network?

I see. Mine is the d6633 but it is customized for HK. I have not received the OTA upgrade yet. I have checked xperifirm as they may have it but will wait for the OTA upgrade. Sony must be releasing soon.
Thank you for replying! I am using Vodafone in the meantime, but want to go back to my EE plan!

For mine, on my networks here in Australia, I can assign 4G LTE to any sim, however, that makes the other sim 2G only (GSM).
The other option is to have both at 3G (WCDMA/HSPA).
If you assign 4g to sim one that work only for 4g or like other phones "LTE(preference)/WCDMA/GSM"
4g not available automatically search 3G if 3G not available automatically search 2G?
Assume second sim is on 2g

Yes, your 4G sim slot will fall back onto 3G and 2G as per expected for most handsets.
help needed

I just got a 6633 through kogan and i am having real trouble getting it to connect to optus network with iinet and truphone simcards. Does anyone know if i need to update any settings or firmware from factory to make it compatible. I can see iinet and truphone lte networks (which i assume is the optus 4g network) when searching manually but the phone wont connect. Sims work in a mates iphone6 without a problem.
Don't suppose anyone knows how to get rid of the #sim card icon on the statusbar?

Have you managed to root it? I rooted the 23.0.1.f.0.96 firmware for my Z3 D6633, but after a while (half a day) it starts to reboot frequently, and Google Play stops working (can browse apps, but not download them, as the download bar never progresses).
Also, my EE sim seems to work, but the phone still shows it as 'Sim 1 0000000' whereas other sims simply appear as sim 1 and sim 2.
I am wondering if I should just downgrade back to 23.0.F.1.74 and move from EE to Vodafone or 3...
Ah, work forced a BlackBerry (yuck!) on me and I've since sold the D6633.
