I got my Kaiser last week, well actually it's a T-Mobile MDA Vario II (what a terrible name!), and quickly found this site which seems very interesting. Being perhaps a little too impulsive I attempted the ROM installation sticky at the top of the page. First step: HardSPL, I got a white screen. Tried the fixed Jumpspl in the sticky but again, white screen. Fortunately after a soft reset the phone was back to normal but all of a sudden I'm not so confident about ROM flashing. So I'm wondering, before I try to sort out the white screen problem, has anyone actually bricked their Kaiser whilst attempting a ROM flash? The FAQ says:
Q: Can I brick my phone by flashing a ROM?
A: To be true… YES. But if you follow all instructions, it is quite implausible that your device bricks.
But what are people's real life experiences?
.
If you don't mess with the boot loader, it's unlikely you will brick your device.
It possibly won't work because the T-Mobile MDA Vario II isnt a Kaiser it's a Hermes aka TyTn.
The T-Mobile MDA Vario III is the Kaiser aka TyTn II. Might want to check your model number again.
Crobe
V1615 aka Kaiser
Rom : Alex's
Radio: 1.27.12.17
Sorry, my mistake. I definitely have a MDA Vario III aka Kaiser, I just missed off an I from the original post.
if you wanna flash, flash now, coz if it really goes wrong, just phone t-mobile and tell them you got the fauty phone and get the new one, I think there is a 14 days worrenty for faulty phone.
I mess up my o2 stella 2 months ago when I made mistake due in flash progress, but it was my faut anyway coz mI didnt do it correctly. and I playing dumb and complain to o2 say "you'v send me a bad phone", then I got new one within 3 days. and this time I fellow the rule and flash my phone step by step, now I have my kasia with dutty's rom, it's way better then o2's orignal rom.
Good luck
I have flashed my 8525 (previous device) and the Tilt multiple times, and I have never bricked them.
The only reason I can say be careful is... IT'S ADDICTING!!!!
I've flashed almost every variant of ROM out there.
Gone through all of Dutty's, 3 of schaps, q-mobiles, etc...
These guys are always working for a better ROM, and it makes for a very exciting week running a new ROM every day
That's all... Enjoy!
Never bricked one, Ive always found the answer to fix my phones

A friend of mine recently took her T-mobile MDA Compact to a High St vendor to have it unlocked. Whatever they have done to it, they appear to have buggered it up properly.
She gave it to me to try and fix it.
When I got it, it would only turn on to the splash screen with the ROM versions displayed, and wouldn't load any further than that. It also wasn't detectable by Active Sync, so I had no choice but to put it into bootloader mode, and try to restore the ROM on the device in this way, as there was obviously something wrong with what was on it.
The upgrade started fine, using the ROM off the T-mobile web page, completing the Radio Rom upgrade fine. However, when it got to 10% of the Extended ROM, an error occured, and shut the program down:
ROMUpgradeUt.ex.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows.
You will need to restart the program.
An error log is being created
I tried this a couple of times with the T-mobile Rom, and got the same result, at exactly the same point.
I thought that perhaps there may have been a problem with the T-mobile UK version of ROM, so I thought as it was pretty messed up anyways, I would try loading another T-mobile ROM on to it. I trie both teh German, and the Dutch registered T-mobile ROM's, getting the exact same error during the upgrade, at exactly the same point.
I then changed computers to try and rule out any possible problem there, and the same result again.
I then proceded to try using the iMate ROM, changing the MaUpgradeUt file to the no ID one, as suggested earlier in this thread, and again got exactly the same result, with the second ROM upgrade stage stalling, and cancelling at exactly 10 again.
Can anybody offer me any assistance with this, or any ideas, or id it possible that the High St vendor has buggered it totally??????
And to boot, the store charged my friend £50 for buggering up her phone, when it is a pretty simple, 5 minute process to unlock one at home!!!!!
I'm no expert but just a thought, it is definately an mda compact and not an mda compact II isn't it? They look the same but are not.

No, I am very sure that it is the original T-mobile UK MDA Compact. I actually have one of each of the Compact and Compact II myself.
Hey all,
My wizard is about 1 year old, and I'm getting the need for an upgrade.
I was thinking about trying a WM6 ROM, but can't decide if I should.
My question really are:
1. Is it worth it? Will it feel any different than WM5, other than just new look?
2. What are the chances of bricking the device during the upgrade?
Thanks a lot..

Let me just say that in January I was ready to throw my Wizard (8125) in the trash. I hated the phone as it was the worst purchase I ever made. It was unreliable, dropped calls, and reset for no reason all the time. It became for me just a PDA, and even then one I barely used since it would reset everytime I started to really need it (or so it seemed). My Nokia 6620 was far more reliable and useful than my 8125 ever was (but due to contracts and prices, getting a new replacement wasn't really an option for me, but I did figure out how to SIM unlock my Nokia 6620 so I was looking at going back to it). Since I had decided to go back to the 6620, I remembered hearing about people flashing custom roms on their Wizard devices, and decided to come back to XDA-Dev (I had found it last September but the term "brick" scared me off), and give it a shot. What was the worst that could happen? Brick it? I was ready to trash it anyway so who cared.
I read everything and decided to give the Faria AKU3.3 a try (WM6 was brand new out and I was intemidated by things I was reading). After I successfully CID Unlocked and then flashed the Tmobile 2.26 rom (which I found hilarious on a Cingular device) I then did AKU 3.3. All I can say is, the rest is history. My eyes were opened. Suddenly this phone became what it was supposed to have been when I bought it. It was fast and reliable. All of my issues (resets, hangs, and dropped calls) were all gone!
So at a minimum, CID Unlock (if you ahve a G3) and put a custom WM5 rom on. You will NOT be disappointed...
But then the ROM flashing bug took over and I'm firmly into WM6 now. I don't think I can ever think about going back to WM5. I just like the feel and ease of things in WM6 (but at first some things I did not like so it takes time to get used to some of the changes).
So good luck in what you decide. Most claim after upgrading to mine (or many other of the custom roms here) that their phone has new life and it stalls the need to switch to buying a new device... Yeah, I'll probably move to an 8525 (Hermes) sometime, but right now my little Wizard is my best buddy and as important to me as my work computer. I use it for everything now...

Hi,
I have had my HTC TyTn II from Orange UK for 3 days now, I love the phone but hate the fact that Orange have removed windows live messenger, and customised the home screen (not in a good way in my opinion!).
Here are the version numbers I see as the phone starts:
R 1.27.14.32
G 22.45.88.07H
D 1.81.00.00
I have been reading up on this forum for the past few days and have decided the best way to get rid of the Orange customised screen and the lack of windows live messenger would be to flash the TyTn II with a different ROM, maybe the original HTC ROM??
Obviously my main concern is bricking my phone, and also voiding the warentee, so i'm basically looking for advice on my best course of action?
I have read that the first thing I should do is load HardSPL (which I understand is a modified bootloader?) my current bootloader versions show as: (obtained by powering up the phone with the camera button pressed)
KAIS130
SPL-1.81.0000
CPLD-8
..but won't even this first step of replacing my bootloader void my warentee, or can it be reversed?? Can I take a backup of my entire phone (including bootloader) in it's current state so that it can be restored if need be?
Can anyone give me some advice / point me in the right direction of where I should start, as I am scared of breaking my new phone, as people on other sites have said they have done!!
Thanks in advance,
Regards
Richard
Read this tread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=365497
then:
Read all the wiki's and stickies for Your device (Kaiser, right).
Use Search to find out about things whick is not clear.
Best of luck!
Personally, I would go for it.
yes to hardspl
then I wouldnt settle for a stock rom - I would go for a cooked one- like dutty's.
You will void the warranty, and as far as I know there is no way back from this.
But that is what this site is all about. Ignore the #2 poster, I can see you have read all you can and you seem to have the right idea about this. So go on.
Just do all of the HardSPL steps and then install a Cooked ROM.
You won't look back. At the moment I suggest you stay away from the 6.1 ROMs until a stable one emerges.
I have an Orange Kaiser.. the branding is really crappy compared to the HTC stuff, god knows why they changed it!
Anyway, I thought I'd retain my warranty for the time being.
So I removed the Orange Home app, installed the HTC Home with 5 buttons, the HTC WMP skin, HTC Calc skin and Kaiser Tweak - all from here and it's much better now.
I expect I could save some memory and get it running a little faster without the Orange ROM, but for the time being it's fine.

Do it.. BUT READ EVERYTHING ON THIS FORUM FIRST RELATING TO FLASHING ROMs. Once you have read it, read it again and ensure you understand it. That way it is unlikely you will brick the device.
I had my TYTN II for a week or so and then flashed it to a new ROM... would never consider going back to the orange one...unless of course it needs to go back as a faulty device. ( there are original orange ROMs to revert back to on here if you ever need them)
It's interesting to see you have the .32 radio on yours.....Mine was shipped with .29 so I may now consider flashing my radio ROM.. how are your signal strengths and GPS lock times??

With what? I had the .32 and couldn't find a copy of it anywhere. I wanted to keep a backup in case of warranty return but I inadvertently flashed the wrong rom yesterday resulting in a new radio and SIM lock
Obviously removing the SIM lock was easy enough but now I can never revert back to my original radio.
The main reason I wanted to re-flash the radio was to see if my wifi problems could be resolved since most of the reports I have seen about the wifi issue relate to UK Orange phones... No luck there either and it's really starting to stress me out
Someone has told me they might have a contact at Orange dev to get a copy of the original rom but I'll believe that when I see it
Anyway, back on topic... even though I've no way to revert back my radio for warranty return, I'm glad I'm rid of the Orange bloatware and will never look back.
Duttys rom looked and felt nice but I had Bluetooth issues with that so have gone back to stock HTC rom for now. HTC home plus the Home customiser, some new icons, quickMenu and that'll do it nicely for me
One word of advice though.... after you've installed hardSPL, CID and SIM unlocked, you'll never be able to put the device down. I don't even want to think about the amount of time I've spent flashing and playing with it since then

I have seen a couple of references to it somewhere in the 248 page Dutty V4 thread. I may try and find it when I find enough time to trawl through it...search yeilds nothing sadly.

Hi all,
I've been reading your threads about flashing the ROM with the 6.1 version from HTC and read that everyone seems to be having issues with flashing the Orange Branded Kaiser.
I've managed to successfully flash mine with the HTC 6.1 update and get rid of all the orange stuff. I used Olipro's SIM/CID unlocker to unlock the device and success, it works!
I made sure that I had a copy of the radio ROM and the original Orange ROM, which are all available on here just incase. The first few times the phone just booted and locked up on the splash screen, so used camera, power and soft reset to boot into bootloader and reinstalled the orange ROM, all worked fine.
Probably teaching you all to suck eggs as you've all probably achieved it, but just wanted to let you know there is hope, I am a noobie yet managed it. Just wanted to say a big thanks to all of you at XDA, especially Olipro! So, cheers! Happy cooking
gratz mate, did mine last week after reading for a couple of weeks, using dutty's wm6.1 but having problems with forwarding text messages, keeps spamming everyone the same message lol......any chance you can upload the original orange rom and radio somewhere I never made a backup
I've been using an Orange TyTn and from day 1 I have been using cooked ROMs with not a single problem EVER... The only problem I came across was the Radio issues... And that was my mistake because I didn't put a 6.1 radio on my phone... All the people that do have problems are those who cannot or choose not to READ!!! Its by no means the simplest job to flash any ROM for the first time with a TyTn... But start reading the right things and taking it ALL in and you can't go wrong... Even if you do go wrong someone has done it too and posted a fix or a guide which explains everything you need to know to get back on track...

Hear, hear - the issues for Orange users are well known and very well documented here. The main issue of SIM lock has gone away thanks to the efforts of Jocky and co. making flashing our Orange devices a much more straightforward affair.
Some time ago I made a backup of the original Orange ROM which can be found in this thread;
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=1586817&postcount=2
Note that this is the ROM and splash screen only - the Radio that Orange ships has never been released in a ROM package, there are other radios available with close(ish) version numbers - see the Radio ROM thread for more information.
we must be carefull with our rulings

I should certainly congratulate you for your successfully flashing a rom on your kaiser. This is the big news of the century ! Two big thums up
But I just don't understand how on earth you got to such all-embracing conclusion that "everyone seems to be having issues with flashing the Orange Branded Kaiser".
This is one of the strangest claims (made in someone's FIRST post) ever posted on kaiser rom dev thread.
As on Orange UK user who has flashed numerous roms on his orange branded TyTN_II (aka kaiser) with unspeakably "less" issues/problems than US/Australian/Malaysian/Germanan/Mars(!!) kaiser users , I have absolutely no idea what you're talking about mate !
Does that "everyone" include you and perhaps a friend of yours ? !!
no offence my friend, but don't you think it would be better to spend some time on the forum before shooting such generalization in the first post??
cheers
Yeah, fair enough that was a generalisation - my appologies! I'll put it down to my excitement of thinking i was a hero for fixing it after it was in bootloader for days! I just read that there seemed to be a lot of issues if you tried flashing it as there is a possibility that the phone will lock you out completely - I have heard of people entering their IMEI number in but not quite sure about it - and this seemed to be a general theme across forums...i probably just read old posts!
Anyway, it was just a thanks than any kind of technical advice! like i said in my post, i got all of the ROMS tools etc from XDA so cheers. There is also a radio rom, the original orange one is 1.65.16.65 which is on here too. I've read that this is the radio shipped with the HTC WM6.1 ROM and orange just used it in their build anyway?
The first time i tried flashing it I didn't want to risk trying Olipro's unlocker, no offence, as it said it changed the Radio which i read was the cause of the issues..but after being stuck in the splash screen for days that annoyingly said "smart mobility"..not so smart when it's a fancy paperweight.. i found out how to get into bootloader and i flashed the Original Orange rom back, and used the unlocker. All worked fine! The only issue was that i use a VPN for work and it wouldn't load the server web pages properly. Managed to fix this after somebody told me about using Schap's AdvancedConfig and changing the UserAgent. again, thanks!
So keep up the good work, you provide hope for plebs like me.

I have searched and searched no answers, am using the radio that was with duttys, no other problems apart from forwarding text messages, seems to spam, try it yourself??.....
Hello,
I recently got a O2 XDA diamond pro with original (sucking) O2 ROM/Firmware. I also tried to unlock the phone to be able to Flash the Original HTC-Firmware, because I experienced the O2-Firmware very unstable!
While my first try to use Olinex-Unlock and other tools (of course use with my phone!), I once bricked the phone. Even Hardreset-Tricks didn't work anymore, after the Screen disapeared with strange stripes. It was fully dead (not even power-on gives any signs of life). Before that the phone worked fine (except the O2-Firmware bugs).
I was able to get a new phone through warrenty by O2 (which wasn't that easy because I didn't buy the phone myself!!!). After sending in the phone, they told me that my original phone has been damaged (main-circuit) for any reason. I can't believe it was my fault / because of any software trying to unlock it, that could have also damaged hardware that way?!
Now I'm not satisfied with the O2 ROM (strange errors, bugs, hangs too often even when opening a menu). Are there any other O2 / German users had problems unlocking their "O2 diamond pro"? Maybe it was just bad luck that my phone bricked trying unlocking the first time?
What would you (other "diamond pro" users / xda-experts) advise me? Is the original HTC Firmware worth doing it?
Best regards
Gabriel
I have a UK o2 Touch pro, i flashed mine to the latest HTC firmware.
All the errors with the o2 rom annoyed me too much. I would get an error everytime i slid open the hadware keyboard. I also found it very slow.
No problems since upgrading with mine.
I 1st flashed mine with hard-spl then with the HTC firmware, didnt have any problems.
I did the same like bod001 with my german XDA Diamond Pro. Worked really good and the HTC firmware is a lot better than the one from o2.
Also no big deal to convert back to o2 firmware and apply the orignial spl back. I had to do this because I send mine in for repair (because of this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=447891 ).
I think it's worth doing it. As said I had absolutely no problem to flash.
