Should I upgrade my ROM? - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III Windows Mobile ROM De

I have been thinking about doing a rom upgrade, mainly to free up space currently taken by the AT&T bloatware. However something has recently come to my attention.
People complain about video playback with the Tilt/Kaiser all the time but I have no such issues. I watch video on it all the time with no lag, freezes, poor quality, etc. I watch WMV's and AVI's and I use Windows Media Player as well as TCPMP, both programs work perfectly even with large file sizes. I also stream video from my home PC using ORB with no playback issues, same with youtube mobile.
I am worried if I upgrade my ROM I might be opening myself up to video issues other users seem to have. If I somehow got lucky and have a tilt without video playback issues, I dont want to mess it up. Would I be running that risk by upgrading to a new ROM (I was thinking about Duty's latest release).

No, you wouldn't be opening yourself up to any driver issues by upgrading. You already have the driver issue, you just don't know it. True the kaiser, in some instances can play videos just fine, but there is a huge potential for the device to be a whole lot faster than it currently is while playing videos, 3d rendering, and just overall user interface responsiveness. I'd recommend you jump in and try out a new rom. You will be glad you did. Make sure and do some reading until you are confident that you are doing it right. (install hardspl) After we get these drivers everyone is waiting on, our phones will be the fastest, baddest mofos on the market. I'm perfectly happy with my kaiser being driverless, but just imagine the possibilities when we get our hands on them drivers. Cheers! happy flashing!

I got my tilt the first day it came out and did not flash it until almost the beginning of this year. I'm so happy i did. If i was you i would take the risk. Duttys roms are awesome. and if you have any problems the new CorePlayer works great and you will notice an improvement on the video even though you dont think you have any problems already.

Need help sorting through all these ROMS!

OK, so back when I first got my phone the weekend ATT started selling I upgraded FROM the nasty ATT ROM to:
RUU_Kaiser_HTC_WWE_1.56.405.5_radio_sign_22.45.88.07_1.27.12.11_Ship
That ROM has served me extremely well. I LOVE the menu on the home screen...
Recently however I was wondering what ROM would improve some of the issues I've been having since then.
#1: I travel a lot, mostly by car and notice my phone has problems finding/switching to new towers. I want a new RADIO version.
#2: there are annoying hiccups and pauses at critical times (when using medical software) and even when not, I was hoping for a ROM with a little more speed and even less fluff.
#3: I want to be able to open office docs, pdfs, and like most of the software I have no (i.e. not looking to get a super stripped version of a ROM)
#4: I want a proven ROM with absolutely no known issues (I once thought about upgrading my radio version a while back and at page 20-something of a thread saw people where having major problems). I'll sacrifice the bleeding edge newest for a little older, stable version.
Suggestions? Recommendations?
Thanks
Well most people like Dutty's ROMs since he updates frequently and are pretty fast and come with a TON of stuff in them. I went for Alex's UltraClean Multimedia AT&T Version ROM. It seems to work fine for me and has had no stability problems. Like you, I use my Kaiser for work(I do IT Consulting) and while not as critical as anything of your profession, I do need full up-time period and Alex's ROM has met the Call to Duty and it fast and stable! Hope this answers your question.
I would suggest Alex's ultra clean then going to Dutty's cab collection and Getting the programs you need like Office and anything else you may want you can find in Dutty's cab collection he has posted.
Thats the route i went and it seems to be working for me =)

Dutty rom testing

How long are the dutty roms tested for, to make sure there arn't problems.
as I installed the march deul touch rom onto a TyTN II phone, and now this rom seems to have fallen apart.
These are the problems I'm getting now all these months later.
The phone start up takes about 5 to 10 second before starting.
Sometimes opening up a program will crash the rom, IE for example.
Other times a program will freeze or the phone and if you wait about 5 seconds or more it may un-freeze, and work though the screen will start to lose GFX and button won't work correctly.
Pressing the camera button can also lock up the phone.
A re-boot of the phone might not always fix the phone, like you need to do 3-5 re-boots before it work.
In these problems I've tried turning to whole phone off and leaving it off for a while, this works most times.
Other problems can happen while using certsin programs or doing certain things with in a program.
for example, opening up the contact and then trying to scroll the list can screew up the screen.
There's probablky some other problems but I havn't quite gotten a lot opf stuff mainly this rom seems to have broken or is falling apart slowly.
I feel the orginal 3 rom is much better.
Seriously dude, if your unhappy, flash the original rom. These forums & roms are for people who are keen to try something diffrent. if you want stock standard go with the original. The rest of us are happy to flash, flash & flash!

I have been using dutty's roms for several months now. I have not experienced any of these issues. The last time my phone lagged was about a month ago when i switched from Opera>Camera. It paused for about 30 seconds which wasn't a big deal at all.
You need to be careful what programs you are installing onto the Kaiser and what roms you are downloading. A lot of applications and some programs that are on the roms aren't necessarily for 6.1roms or the device to begin with.
I noticed my phone has issues when I install cubes. So I tend to stay away from cubes when Im using htchcustomizer.
But overall, his roms are great and if you have been using the roms you should know what to expect. You need to troubleshoot your issues by yourself because we don't know what rom you have because you never specified, what applications you have installed, which you've narrowed down to create these problems rather than blaming it on the rom itself.

I gave it a try to see what the result would be when using this rom.
I havn't looked at this forum heaps but seems to me that this rom is released quite a lot, and I'm wondering if that's due to problems over time or simply trying to release roms with something that's simply new to a rom or program.
The rom is DualTouch v6 WWE 03/06/2008
Radio: 1.58.25.14
protocol: 25.69.30.05H
For me, I have found this rom to be a bit flaky myself, lacking in a number of areas and the default programs I find limit the usefulness of the phone and slow me down compared to the orginal rom, and now the MS core program simply lock up at different times even after re-boots.
I'll re-flash the rom sometime soon, with probably a different rom I seen another decent rom on here but had too much video player/MP3 player type programs, in it and the office had been ripped out of the phone.
I would rather sus out making my own rom, so I can drop in programs that I think help to speed up using the phone and offer much better options for surfing the net and handling videos than from what I've seen so far.
I use my phone a lot of surfing the net and managing data that I have rather than using it for games or movies as such, music is ok but I have an A1000 as well and that's stero and I'd rather that for music also UIQ is a much better OS than WM but what can you do hey.
Then Get In The Kitchen And Cook Your Own
you could have a virus they are computers after all i would tyr flashing the rom again ......
Mods please close this useless thread, it should be in the respected version thread if anything.
posting under the thread related to the rom will help you avoid getting flammed or being responded to rudely. As far as Dutty's roms go i haven't had problems while using his roms .. and just like p1tater said if you don't like the way Dutty has built the rom than get in the kitchen and cook a rom yourself .

Fuze Complaints & Gripes Go Here & Only Here

I was super excited to hear that the Fuze was coming out for AT&T since I have been waiting for the TouchPro for a long time. Finally my local AT&T store got a couple in stock so I went to go take it for a test drive after reading/watching all the reviews I could find.
I'm thoroughly disappointed. I am trying to upgrade from my 8125 and i was thinking that it would be a major improvement. The Fuze is slower than my 8125, how is this possible? Is touchflow3D the new vista? The only thing that even keeps me remotely interested is the video out capability.
I'm not sure if I should be mad at HTC since they only make the hardware or microsoft since they make the bulky and outdated windows mobile software. Now I have to wait another year to see what hits the market. I'm a big fan of HTC and WinMo but I think someone needs to step it up a bit. IPhone isn't that big of a threat but after playing with the Android OS on the G1 I can definitely say that it is worthy to be called a next-gen OS.
Throw the Android OS on the Fuze and then we can call it a day.
I think it is our fault for constantly spending $500 on phones that provide inferior performance. Ok the rant and rave is over
Mod Edit: Combined about 10 threads with various minor complaints about the fuze, please try to keep general complaint type comments to this thread.
I had issues that day I bought my Fuze. I was really worried that it was a dog as it was slow and using the screen was spotty. The two things I did to change my mind were to use my finger tip instead of finger nail to navigate the screen and intall the TF3D Configuration tool and apply the speed tweaks. After that it runs like lighting... I upgraded from the 8525...
turn off TF3d and re-evaluate the speed.
is the slowness TF or WM
While not as snappy as my Tilt, I don't think its the TF3D app. I can turn it off and use it like a normal mobile device. I noticed finger swipes works better than my Tilt.
People need to remember this is NOT an Iphone or a G1. Those use a different screen technology. Perfect for fingers, really bad for accuracy. Just remember on a winMobile device, swiping with a bit a pressure will work fine. If you want accuracy like clicking on a small box or drawing something (Lets seee iphone or G1) freehand, use the stylus.
Fuze bonus over that of the Tilt: Hi-Resolution screen, more keys on the keyboard, camera light, other things too, but thats the main thing. I liked.
And the G1 ain't all its cracked up to be. My friend has it. He's not happy. He moved from a BB though. Doesn't even have a IM client yet that works full time.
Man, my Fuse (with the TF3D running) is at worst just as fast as my 8525

I agree. Its MUCH, MUCH faster than my Tilt was after I flashed NotATreoFan's ROM. He basically made a clean version of the stock ATT ROM.
The stock ROM is crap and is bloated and runs slow and lags.
I also made some changes in the AdvancedConfig tool. I changed the finger pressure and sensitivity to Normal instead of the defaults.

This!
Flash your Fuze
I was on the fence about flashing my Fuze... but finally put ROMeOS 1.40 and, like everyone else has said, its night and day.
Just curious what what you're doing that the 8125 could perform better?
sure it is slow. thanks to AT&T bloatware.
I have not flashed a new ROM yet, but just by getting rid of the bloatware and doing the TF3D performance tweaks, the HSPDA tweak, the remapping the PTT button, and i am a happy camper already.
I love the size and the screen resolution. The touch screen TF3D is a huge improvement on my Tilt's Manilla 2D. And once you get stuff like Gyrator 2 on it (to use the G-sensor in ANY app, not just Opera and HTC Album), it really blows my old phone away.
Slowness, GPS lags, network restrictions, bloatware are all easily fixable - well, thats why we love XDA-Devs
the phone is only as good as the user makes it. Try tweaking it and you'll love it like the rest of us~
And trust me, you don't want android YET, so many bugs and flaws with that OS right now. Get yourself a g1 and you'll see why.
Good luck playing with your fuze!
My TF feels kinda fast, no lag whatsoever.
Stock ROM, nothing tampered with except Diamond Background Changer...
I did do a hard reset after the first 4 hours with the phone though, just to avoid any problems (saw it on the Sprint TP forums).

XDA to the rescue as always
Thanks for all your comments and I see and appreciate your respective arguments.
baboola - this is very true that we are here because we unhappy with the out-of-the-box performance of our phones
kcchen - 8125 is running touchflo 2d and runs like a champ compared to Fuze with touchflo 3d. I'm guessing this would be the same on the 8525 and 9525 (Tilt)
everyone - thanks for making XDA an awesome expeirience
I guess as usual flashing is the only way to make the necessary improvement. I wasn't really thinking about the AT&T bloatware.

Good luck! Do the HardSPL and get one of the page pool optimized ROMs. I use the ROMeOS 1.40 which is a dramatic performance improvement... Kevlar-Source has a repository of other ROMs with the page pool hex set to 0. Do a search in the Rapheal ROM development to find Kevlar's repository.
Good luck!
Bloatware...I don't get all your complaints!
It's not like all that crap is hogging RAM. So what's the difference between whacking it and going through the steps to make everything work again - and just leaving it alone?
I use my Fuze with a custom ROM. Faster than the Tilt or the 8125 I had before. I had the ATT ROM for 2 days until I just had too many issues. The customer ROM is much better. Still some minor issues but nothing major.
Still not sure if I like the design of the up/down/left/right. Half the time I press right, I hit the back button.
Think I'm gonna return my Fuze
I've been playing with it since the day before launch, haven't done any custom ROM's so it's all stock...but I don't like it. I mean it's sexy--I love the device itself--but AT&T's software eats it *bad*. At times it feels slower than my Wizard running 6.1, and it's way, way, WAY less stable. The thing is locking up constantly...it's just a pain in the ass.
So I guess that's it. Anyone else disappointed in the software load they've given or had stability problems with the device?
I had a lot of lag with it, but every since my friend flashed it and had all the AT&T stuff taken out, it's been running faster and its pretty stable.
I've been thinking of doing that as well, I am just a bit torn because I'm not sure the ROM development is really mature yet for this particular phone. Also I tend to think this one might be having hardware issues given how much it locks up. Maybe I'll just have them exchange it for another one.

Why can't my Raph do this?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0c-gP1TxZCk
It chokes so much and slows down. I mean, I don't have a Slingplayer, but I know from experience it just can't handle this. But the stats on the phone are far superior - so whats the issue? TouchFlo 3D?
Or is it time for a new ROM? Is it time for a fresh ROM install every week or something?
Slingplayer works fine on my Fuze.
I meant how it's playing Slingplayer and Music at once. I mean, I have trouble bringing the "current programs open" list down responsively. And this guy has no lag at all anywhere.
i would also assume it has something to do with the n95's rigged specs along with symbian s60's lightness
i mean we all know that there are laggy areas on our phones especially when we're running demanding software...thats just how it is :-\

[Q] Will using a custom Rom solve my issues with the Transformer?

i have been an owner of the Transformer for just under a week, to be honest i think its a let down.
Internet experience is slow and jerky, flash takes a while to speed up. (Ive tried all browsers)
N64iod runs better and faster on my xperia play (which is a 1 core processor)
Some games seem to re-download every time i run them.
Cant play 720p with HW enabled with SW there slow.
Live wallpapers slow down the OS, my Xperia doesn't!
I could go on.
I know the OS is relatively new, but i cant buy that. The tablet cost me £415 with dock, If i was a normal customer, (the everyday user) i would take it back to the shop as i would think it was broke.
My last point is the constant crashes, it even locked up while trying to shut down.
So please please please tell me there is an answer, i so want to like it, as the concept is brill, i based buying this on my xperia play, i love the os, but honeycomb maybe the problem here!
Cheers.

First of all, what android version and firmware build are you running and are you rooted? Secondly, have you performed any OTA updates since you bought your TF? Before I installed a custom rom on my TF, I myself have experienced serious lag and slow down due to multiple OTA updates. As with any pc based platform, its typically best to do a full wipe and perform a clean install to have it running at its peak. Before I took the route of a custom rom, i did a full wipe and fresh install and could immediately tell the difference in speed. So my suggestion is that you take that route first. Also, if you are interested in rooting and installing a custom rom, be advised that starting with the B70 revision, ASUS changed and locked down the bootloaders and they are currently unrootable at this time...which means you won't be able to install a custom rom. Find your S/N and if it starts with B70 or higher, then you won't be able to root at this time.
I have not had to many FCs, either stock or on Prime. Most times that I get any problems at all are in the stock browser, and usually thenjust a matter of slowness and the occasional "FC or Wait" prompt; particuarlly on more 'involved' web pages. Loading pages are also fairly sloow at times but still faster than my phone. My phone uses Opera for tremendous inprovement over it's stock browser.
Don't know about the 720p, haven't tried and don't know what program you used. Out of box is rather minimal audio/video playback as far as I noticed.
General performance wise, this thing beats a number of x86 systems I've had, espiecally while compiling C/C++ code.
If it's not something closer to the hardware, doing an nvflash to a custom rom might be worth trying but it can be an irk to deal with nuking everythiing you have stored, backups or no.
Internet experience is slow and jerky, flash takes a while to speed up. (Ive tried all browsers)
Latest Flash, Latest Browser (3.2.1) - runs good.
N64iod runs better and faster on my xperia play (which is a 1 core processor)
I have this issue, too - probably Tegra2 related (OCing may help?)
Some games seem to re-download every time i run them.
What games? Never noticed it.
Cant play 720p with HW enabled with SW there slow.
Get DicePlayer - best player around, supports HW acceleration and 720p is good as well (compared to others) - thanks to tegra2 plugins. Not free tough.
Live wallpapers slow down the OS, my Xperia doesn't!
Higher resoltioun and tegra2 issue AFAIK (might be wrong).

You are correct, custom roms are always going to end up being preference. If you are able to root, the best way to start off this endeavor is to visit the posts of all 3 major roms for the TF in the development section. Find out what each rom offers, and make your decision based off of that. You can always try out each rom to see which one you like better.
My choices are limited now
checked my serial and its B70.
Looks like i'm stuck with stock until asus / google sort my issues.
One last question?
i here good things about opera, but i dont like the way it loads (waiting for the page to load before displaying) is there anyway to disable this feature?
Sometimes you just want to click on a link i dont really want the whole page to load!
Asus changed the bootloader not too long after they started making the B70 revisions. So there is a very small window of chance that your TF can be rooted. You can always try, but the chances are slim. I can't answer your Opera question...I don't use Opera.

There is no option for this in Opera Mobile; I should know, it's what I use off the phone next to me .
Opera Mini is probably the same, but I would highly doubt it would support that feature even if it wasn't.
@blonqe: I posted something similar and goodintentions replied the same way... he has down syndrome, bless his heart...
Anyway, just accept you got suckered in to all this EEE Fad, iFad marketing BS. The Tegra 2 is a $5 PoS SoC... kind of like the PoS Atom CPU.
Tabs are fairly useless, but you wanted to waste some money
Oh if you disable flash in the stock browser it's speed is good.
I'm stuck with stock too ... REALLY FARKING pisses me off that I'm locked out of my own device.

Lol, this man has made the greatest mod to his TF!
But yeah, try running a custom rom (if you can) and see if your problems are still present. If so, contact Asus and maybe they will give you a replacement, could simple be some hardware malfunctions.
well i tried to root using the all in one tool, when trying to backup and root i kept getting an error cannot boot to pad or something like that, so for now ive had to admit defeat and wait for some bright spark to hopefully crack the new bootloader :-(

Just wanted to bump my original thread to say after alot of complaing from me i can now say i am a proud owner of the Asus Transformer TF101.
Thanks to the fact i can now root and install custom roms.
After a few weeks of trial and error, i tried, revolver, Prime and KRAKD.
The latter for me was easily the best so so smooth, OC 1.504 i tried same on the other Roms, but with KRAKD i had no issues and its just so much quicker in my opinion.
One issue that exists in all the custom roms is that the xbox controller doesn't work until you change the kernel. Weird.
Brwosing is more of a joy and with ICS on its way my tablet experience is looking up!
Still tempted by windows 8 but we will wait and see.
Glad to hear everything worked out.
If you have a PS3, you should be able to use a Sigaxis controller using the Sigaxis application on the market as well.
