Chaps,
A little while ago I changed my splash screen using the HardSPL/SplashTool/CustomRUU but now my Vario III has developed a fault and needs to be sent back for replacement/repair. Thinking it best to restore the original ROM, I located the UK TMobile ROM from elsewhere on this forum, backed up my data using Sprite backup and performed the necessary reflash
As I still want to use my Vario III until I hand it back, I tried to restore my backup to the phone. However, I'm getting a ROM mismatch error from the sprite software and advises that is couldnt recover CEMAIL.VOL or PIM.VOL either :S
Also, now when I select 'Contacts' from the main screen - I get the following error: "Shortcut Target - Error opening the shortcut or locating the target filename" plus now I only get the "Sim Contacts" when using the 'contacts' option from the start menu, when I should see 2 icons.
From what I remember when I performed the reflash today, it said that the version numbers matched. I can't think whats causing this
Please could anyone help me out here?
Cheers

It won't work because it's a different rom!
Imagine taking an image of windows 2000 and using it to restore a vista machine (just an example) ... it just won't work.
You basically have to start from scratch.
I hadn't modified my ROM apart from the splash screen, plus when I performed the reflash I was told the two ROM versions were the same ?
Also since reflashing with the TMobile ROM from this site - I dont seem to have half of the stuff in the "organiser" folder i.e. Calendar plus I swear that bubblet (or whatever) came as standard on WM6. I could be wrong about that though.

Hey all, I have a friend with an 8125 that is setup SWEET to run WM6, way better then mine but he doesn't remember all the configurations and stuff he did. Is there a way for me to "backup" his rom so I can transfer it to my phone? I would also like to "backup" my entire phone from time to time in case of failures.
Now what I'm asking here is like a dump, or something along those lines NOT spb backup I want everything.

I know you said no spb backup but......if you flash your device with the same ROM he used and do a complete SPB backup of his device you WILL have everything once you rund the saved back up on your newly flashed device....that's the simple way to do it
I think that what WE are looking for is a way to generate a dump of the entire ROM (containing IPL/SPL, Splash screens, Radio and of course the OS)... I mean a way to generate a NK.NBF that we can flash it back if something goes wrong...
There is a home-made tool (don't remember the name but can be found in this forum) that allows you to dump your current ROM but the file extension is NOT .nbf, as I remember is .nb.
This format is recognized neither shelltool nor romupdateutility.
So, Is there out a tool to generate .NBF files from a device? (again, no talking about SBP backup, sprite backup, etc.)
So I did the r2sd thing that I found on here. It DID work that I am very happy for. Now I can keep a backup always on one of my extra SD cards... Now the crapy part.. when we transfered roms betwean phones we got device ID failures... Can't figure it out yet... Looks like everything took just fine, boots properly with updated IPL/SPL and splash screens but fails to authenticate device ID....
HERE Is What you are looking for....

Yes there is a program "SPB Clone"
Hello!
I will receive my Polaris in a couple of days And I will probably load some new programs into it.
My question is: after a hard reset it will be back to factory settings right?
How do you load the new programs again?
Do you load them one by one, or is there a kind of backupprogram that will load all the programs for you?
Thank you.
And this is a excellent forum

Of course you can use a backup program. The best are SPB Backup & Sprite Backup.
There are some backup programs, but they only store the contact/mail/calendar data... I'm not sure if there is any that backups the programs... the best way is to install everything on the memory card, and backup the shortcut files on the memory card. After the HR you only have to copy those back in the StartMenu folder
Som program dont work whithout registry entries or other installed components, so these won't work whith the method above.
The Activesync, and the Device Center has a list of installed/installable apps that will install those on user request (mass install), but that will still intall them 1 by 1....

If you're getting a sim free polaris, then, it comes with a free HTC back up software and a complimentary Sprite Back up software. You can use either of them. Install either one of them on the main memory but make sure you put your back up on your storage card.
Side note: Load APPLICATION software one at a time and observed the behaviour of your device for a day or so. If it's working according to your expectations then make a back up and install another one.
Thanks guys
And my Polaris comes sim free so hopefully the software I need is included in the package.

There have been complaints about the (old) version of Sprite Backup that is included in the CD of Polaris. I would suggest to install the latest version of Sprite Backup or SPB Backup.
The HTC backup tool is Sprite Backup 5.10 (P3650_BackupTool_5.1.0.b1450_HTC_WWE_20071102.exe)
And the included 'SpriteBackupEnglishPersonalSetup.exe' is the same as the HTC one, but it installs a PC suite aswell.
Here is my situation:
I had a HTC Touch Pro T7272. A few days ago I lost this phone but ordered a new one.
I ordered the same phone, but it may have a different ROM/Radio version
For the phone I lost, I have a full backup, from 3 weeks ago. I also have the updated synced files from the day before I lost this phone. I had done a lot of tweaks and added many programs, so it would be best to restore the full backup to the new phone.
1. When the new TP arrives, should I load the Sprite backup (an .exe file) onto the new phone and run that?
2. Then sync to my desktop to get the latest file updates?
3. Do I have to load sprite backup onto the Touch Pro first? Or can I just load the backup file and double clip it to execute Restore?
4. I have .net 3.5 loaded on my desktop. Do I need to load this onto the TP BEFORE I do the Restore?
Any advice here would be greatly appreciated.

1- You can - although it's not necessary if the backup file you created is self-restoring.
2- Yes after you've run your backup.
3- No, see my #1
4- No, unless the last backup you have doesn't include it.
Thanks for your advise C. My head is still spinning from losing my phone.
If the restore somehow messes with the phone (let's say it's got a new ROM and slightly different registry), you can always then backup your PIM data with PIM backup 2.8, then do a hard reset and restore the PIM data. If you want to get fancier, you can look through your registry and find the settings that you'd like to keep, and export those reg keys to your sd card, then import them back after a hard reset.
Since the backup file is an .exe file, can I run it from the micro sd card in the phone, or does it have to be run from the desktop?
I am sorry to tell you but, after updating to the new ROM, I tried to restore a backup taken with the old ROM and I had major problems, one of them being that the screen would not rotate when sliding out the keyboard, so I ended up hard-resetting and reinstalling all applications one by one....
Wouldn't you be better off restoring using the same ROM (as used in the backup), THEN upgrading ROMs?
This reminds me though, I don't know which ROM I had in my lost phone. Therefore I might have to reload eveerything one by one...ERRRR
Hi,
I recently did that after upgrading the ROM. I can say it works, but I'm not sure, if there are any files from the new ROM that have been replaced by old versions. You'd probably be better off just restoring your PIM data only...
CU,
Cactus World
Now I am all messed up. Please help.
1. I just received my replacement TP phone. I loaded the backup .exe file onto it but it would not execute. Error message says missing a component.
How to I get sprite backup working again? It is on my desktop.
2. I need to load .net 3.5 onto this device. I can't remember where I got it from or how I loaded it. Can someone remind me. It is actuially already loaded on my desktop.
3. I need to reload the latest version of Google Maps. Does anyone have the link?
Thanks for the help. My head is about to explode trying to get this new phone back to the previous state.
Okay, I figured out 1 & 2.
Does anyone have a link to the newest Google maps?
Does anyone know the registry setting to remove an icon on the email tabs? After doing the restore, I have 2 icons that were linked to email accounts, that no longer work. How can I get rid of them?
My last phone had "Programs" in the bottom right hand corner of Today screen. This one has "Contacts" I prefer "Programs" Does anyone know how to fix this?
I apologize if I suck at describing some of these issues. I am still beating myself up for losing the phone.
http://www.google.com/gmm/GoogleMaps.CAB
And try this for fixing those orphaned accounts - worked for me:
http://nicolasmauri.blogspot.com/2007/01/wm5-utility-recover-your-lost-mail.html
hyachts, thanks for the help. this software from Nicolas Mauri might work, but I couldn't tell from his blog. You see I have 1 or 2 extra email icons that were left from a restore. Will this program get rid of those email icons? Also, it is in .rar format so I can't use on my comouters here. I have to try my office. Is there a .cab file in the .rar file?
One more request. Does anyone know how to add the "programs" choice instead of "contacts" on the home screen (lower right hand corner)
Hi, I just found this link download for Sprite backup. Not sure if it is a trial version or not, but it is working fine with no restictions with my HD2. Definately isn't Warez
Link is
http://handheld.softpedia.com/progDownload/Sprite-Backup-Download-58811.html
I have backed up and restored no problems, but I am wondering if anyone else has used this to restore after changing to a new ROM?
I dont want to test it in case anything goes wrong
Thanks
Edit************
Definately a trial verison for 10 days, but still good if you want to check out the software.
The link you posted is a trial version - it clearly says so on the site linked to.
I haven't used Sprite on my HD2 but used it on my TyTN II and used it to restore having upgraded the ROM from WM6 to 6.1 without a problem. However, don't take that as a guarantee that it will work on an HD2!
May you be warned.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=6239303
I am trying out SPB Backup. Hopefully, it will rescue my hardwork the next time my HD2 becomes uncontrollable.
You mean your HD2 didn't come with Sprite backup? HK versions is bundled with a full version.
Sprite Backup
Yes, I have a Malaysian device that also comes with it. Write now, after a hard reset I can't find it anymore to reinstall it. Can you help me?
thanks for the link
I tried Sprite, then bought the retail version. It does exactly what it says on the tin.
What it CAN'T do is a restore if a new rom is put on the HD2 - just won't work!
Having said that, I like it, and perform a backup frequently.
I never could get it to restore properly either
after flashing even a new ROM update. It says you can do it. They also stopped their forum and said they were just going to handle questions through support. Two emails to support never answered.
If you restore from SD card it is quick. You need to re-set your restore options each and every time. If you restore from PC you have to re-enter all your software registration data. Kind of a pain.
Restore options should be delete all files and replace not merge.
If I had it to do over again I think would try SPB Backup. Only heard good things about it.

This is a general CWM question but I could not find any place better to post on XDA, so excuse this if incorrect location.
I have flashed all the Skyrocket ICS roms in the past few days to see which I liked best. Before I flashed a new one, I would make a CWM backup of the current one. Wanting to easily be able to identify the files, I appended the rom name to the end of the CWM filenames after deleting all the characters after the date, which appeared to be a GMT time stamp. Now, when I try to restore any of those files, I get an MD5 checksum error. I am only assuming that this is due to changing the filename and not some other problem. Anyone have any ideas on how to fix this? TIA.

Are you talking about the folder name? Because that shouldnt affect it. Inside the folder that is created for each backup, there are backup files which dont have any dates/times in the filename itself.
I vaguely remember reading about this, but I can't recall how it was resolved. Try updating your can to 5.5.0.4 Touch or 5.8.1.3 (?? something along those lines) and seeing if that resolves it. Outside if that I must ask the obvious, did u Google "md5 checksum error cwm"?
Are you using the same CWM version as you did when you backed up? If you didnt, then thats one reason. You have to stay on the same CWM version, many of these CWM versions floating around have different fixes in there.
One way around this is to go to Advanced Restore and restore all the IMG files from there.

I figured I would post this fix here in case anyone else ran into this problem. This is assuming you did not change the folder names and let Clockworkmod create them. I haven't had it happen until today, but it's not a nice message to see when you are trying to do a restore.
Code:
Checking MD5 sums...
MD5 mismatch!
Do this to fix:
To fix this problem use the code below. Substitute the final folder name for the backup you need to fix.
Code:
adb shell
# cd /sdcard/clockworkmod/backup/2010-06-29.20.22.53
# rm nandroid.md5
# md5sum *img > nandroid.md5
When that finishes, re-run the restore and everything should be fine.
NOTE: As rpearl stated, there could be something really wrong with your nandroid, so use this tutorial as a learning experience and not a fix-all. In my case, everything was fine after restoring. However, that may not always be the case. Do this with caution.

That is correct on most of them. I updated to CWM Touch for the last one, but it did not restore either. To check this out, I just did a backup and without changing the name did a restore and it worked fine. The thing that was odd in the backups that would not restore was that it immediately bombed out of the checksum each time as if it was checking the name itself first.
That is brilliant. I did not realize you could generate the MD5 from ADB and stick it right into the folder. Thanks!
The few times this md5 mis-match has happened to me was because (a) the backup was actually messed up (check folder size) probably due to corruption or (b) my SD card was out of space. I've always renamed my backup set similar to yours (I append the ROM name) and it never affects the restore.

Are you using touch or standard CWM? I wonder if this only happens in touch version. I will try this in the next few days.
I changed the name of one of the backups I created with CWM touch and it restored fine using touch. I suppose my earlier problem may have been trying to restore a backup created with old CWM using touch version.

If you are using sk8erwitskil version of the CWM touch (ClockworkMod TOUCH 5.5.0.4 v3.5) then most likely you didnt follow one of the directions on the front page. This is a known issue. Here it is again. You need to create that file on the location you backing upto.
For CWM to recognize the .hidenandroidprogress file you need to boot into CWM and go to mounts and storage>>mount /sdcard then go back to backup & restore and make a restore and it should work everytime (as long as you do the steps in that order and you have the .hidenandroidprogress file in /sdcard/clockworkmod & /sdcard/external_sd/clockworkmod folders)
There is a known bug in ClockworkMod 5.5.0.4 that long file names can POSSIBLY cause backups to hang. There is a solution/workaround:
•boot into recovery
•try to make a backup (no matter if it passes or fails proceed to next step)
•either through terminal emulator or through adb run the following command EXACTLY:
Code:
touch /sdcard/clockworkmod/.hidenandroidprogress
•if you are backing up to external sdcard then run the following:
Code:
touch /sdcard/external_sd/clockworkmod/.hidenandroidprogress
im using 5.8.1.3 hercules that i got from the dev section. is this a known issue with it to?

Not sure, I used that for awhile but then went back to the other touch and Ive had those two files still in my directories.
I would go ahead and create those two files (one for internal SD and one for external SD if you got one you are using that is) and try it again. Make sure you call that file exactly the way it is, or copy/paste the code identically if you do it through ADB.

Well the crazy thing is after sitting there over an hour waiting I finally took out the battery and even though it never said complete all the files are there but I still don't trust that it made a good backup so I deleted those files tried putting in the code above and it still would not work so I flashed back to version 5.0.2.0 thats not touch and it made a perfect backup in under 2 minutes. Might be one of those it just ain't gonna work right on this specific phone thing or it could be the little green gremlins at it again lol... who knows.. I'll just wait for new version of touch to come along and try it. It won't be long till a newer greater version comes along as fast as technology is going today.. thanks for the help. I'm learning more and more each day from you guys on xda.....

Not sure if this is the cause of the issue but for nandroid backups you can't make a folder name with spaces otherwise you will get an md5 sum error. Try renaming the folder with underscores instead of spaces
