Most T-Mobile WM5/WM6 phones are able to skip the cold-boot Welcome screen entirely and goes straight to "Configuring Device". What registry settings make it do this? Also, what configuration files is it executing when this occurs?
In the initflashfiles.dat file, there are two lines responsible for the applications running at first boot:
Code:
Directory("\Windows\StartUp"):-File("coldinit.lnk","\Windows\coldinit.lnk")
Directory("\Windows\StartUp"):-File("welcome.lnk","\Windows\welcome.lnk")
Removing the second one or adding the comment tag (;), will prevent the "Welcome" screen from appearing. Smartphones do not have the "Configuring Device" screen, just the "Welcome" screen, where you can set date/time and email accounts.
The TMO ones really do have a configuring device screen. My SDA had it with the original WM5 and my T-Mobile Dash (Excalibur) has it.
I've attached a pic of what the screen looks like. It completely bypasses the welcome and does this "Configuring Device" screen instead. I think it's setting things up, but I don't know what files it's using to set stuff up or what it's doing.
I think my Cingular 3125 (StarTrek) does this too if I recall correctly.
How Did You Do That???
How do you cold boot your Dash?

Cold boot is old language. Strictly speaking, a warm boot would be a soft reset and a cold boot would be recycling the power (off/on)
restart with power = warm boot (with DOS PC it was Ctrl+Alt+Delete)
and restart from no power = cold boot (with DOS PC it was the reset button, or toggle the on/off switch)
The 'boot' required to get the welcome screen would be a hard reset. You can get a hard reset by going to the Settings for Storage and clear storage, or:
From power off,
Hold left and right soft buttons (Start and Contacts).
Push power on.
When you see a black screen, press 0.
N.B. These are the directions for hard reset of the Tornado. It does work the same for many other devices, but you may have to check the Wiki for your device if it is not a Tornado.

Because i am using Direct Push to get my emails on our secure exchange server Windows forces me to enter a password when turning on my Orbit 2. Trouble is the brightness of the backlight is reduced almost immediately i turn my phone on and it makes it very difficult (in fact almost impossible) to see the screen to enter my password especially in daylight. Can anyone help?
Hi Bortis, I'm new to the forum so spent ages trying to find a solution to a similar problem.
I dont set the pasword lock all of the time but had the same problem with the keylock. i.e. when locked the backlight went off.
I needed to use a registry editor (PHM Regedit in my case)
I then edited registry keys as shown on the top of page 2 on
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=384865
I know the usual answer is 'do a search' but having spent ~ 6 hours doing that I HTH.
cheers

I had the same problem with my Orbit II. I followed some simple advice from NoFatePPC and have had no problems since even after doing a reset
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
go here in your registry:
\HKCU\ControlPanel\Backlight\LockLevel
you should see a bunch of keys and a folder called "LockLevel" - inside that folder is the LockLevel key with a value of 1 or 0 - you don't need to go inside that folder. just rename it from "LockLevel" to "LockLevelx" (add an x to the end of the folder's name)...
that's it.

Cannot unlock password on Orbit 2
Hello,
I have an HTC Orbit 2 (POLA 200). It's locked in O2, but that not the problem. The problem I'm having is that it suddenly started to show me the password unlock screen. I've tried to hard reset it and access the boot loader, but it is NOT working When I try to hard reset it (camera button + reset button, then release the reset button and keep the camera button pushed) it just restarts normally. It shows that "O2 Welcome" splash screen, then the screen with Windows Mobile 6.1 and then it gives the password screen. On the top, it appears that I have signal through HDSPA and the muted sound icon. Also, it says that I can make only emergency calls. I don't know what to do, because I haven't set any password. I've tried a few standard ones like: 1234, 0000 - but nothing. However, if I put in "999" without the quotes, the screen light gets stronger and it says that I must press DIAL to talk, but that's the emergency thing . I have to let you know that I cannot sync the phone through active sync or anything like that.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Hi,
I'm experiencing a strange problem with my Tornado (i-mate SP5, WM6 Platinum Edition). Today it stopped working suddenly, I had to remove the battery. When rebooting, the i-mate sceen appears, then the HTC logo, then Nitrogenius' splashscreen, then a beep sounds, and afterwards the screen is black and nothing happens, no keys are responding. I can "switch off" the phone by long pressing of the power key. Reset with pressing the 2 soft keys and the starting key does not work, the phone starts until the splashscreen and afterwards the screen goes black. Strangely I can connect the phone with activesync, synchronize contacts and calendar and even explore the device with activesync's filemanager; and the battery is charging, too.
Any suggestions except reflashing?
Regards

Thanks for the hint, I tried, but unfortunately I seem to miss something. Could you elaborate a bit how you managed to switch on backlight.
Thanks a lot!
EDIT: It worked! You made my day!
After pressing the keys you mentioned (and some others, too) and after rebooting again the backlight is on again. Thanks a lot!
I met the same problem in many cases and I found the culprit, it is tornadolowlight or tornadopowercontrol. while these appli are activating if I soft reset or by force restart (removing battery) then next startup will get a blank screen. But actually in this case the device is on and working only thing is its backlight is off. So, by using a torch light or simply using MyMobiler from a pc you can see the screen, and start that culprit appli then done
OR another thing I have done is I put shortkey for MultiFlashLight and whenever such situation happened I just press the shortkey and activated it and done
Hi,
I have changed the registry key to change the default keyboard input.
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ControlPanel\Sip
After changing the registry key, I have restarted my mobile but it does not get start properly. It just shows the starting screen (only shows "Windows mobile" on screen). Please help me to solve the problem.
Mobile details :- HTC P3450
OS :- Windows moble 6.1
Thanks in advance,
Milind
looks like you need to hard-reset your device.
Please let me know how to hard reset the device.

That's guessing you have an Elf HTC P3450 if not the WIKI will hold the info
Not Working.
Even after resetting it just shows the "Windows Mobile" on screen.
Is there any other way to edit the registry entry.
No way to change registry without being in operating system, my next advise is to go to the WIKI i linked and find your stock ROM and flash.
After a hard reset (soft reset won't solve your issue) it will sit at the Windows Mobile screen for a while as it initializes the system for the first time, so wait 15 or so minutes, and it should get around to setting up your stylus and such.
Hi, this happend to me once screwing around with sip, to get block recognizer back in wm6.5, and the all thing freezed just like you. So do operate hard reset and be patient it will end up telling you you really messed up but will start from scratch after a while.
hcall,trowakage
After hard reset I have Kept the device on for whole night but still it shows the "Windows mobile" on screen.
stylez,
It is not possible to connect the phone to PC through active sync, so it is not possible to flush the ROM.
-Milind.
weird, I suppose you tried pulling out the battery and putting it back on? what keys do you press to hard reset? do you get a message saying you will loose all your data press action to continue?
Can you enter hardspl at all? if so you can flash your rom
To perform a hard reset
1.Press and hold the TALK and END buttons, and at the same time, use the stylus to press the RESET button at the bottom of your device.2.Release the stylus, but continue pressing the TALK and END buttons until you see the following message on the screen:This operation will delete all your personal data, and reset all settings to manufacturer default. Press Action to restore manufacturer default, or press other keys to cancel.
3.Release the TALK and END buttons, and then press ENTER on your device.
good luck
hcall,
I have tried it in the same way which you have mentioned.
In the same way shown in video
But unfortunately it doesn't show any message (hard reset might work after booting OS completely & in my case it is not possible, it just shows "Windows Mobile").
can you boot on hard spl at all?
hcall,
no.
power off...
press power button while the volume key is pressed down... that way you'll enter the tri-color boot screen... connect it to your computer and flash a good rom.
TheRem,
Not working.
Is there another way to reinstall OS.
-Milind
It seems there is no solution for this problem.
-Milind
bring it to the nearest HTC service center in your country.

Hi,
I got my HTC HD2 only a couple of weeks ago, and I already got a problem with it
The thing is, that I can't boot it up properly; when pressing the "Turn on/Turn off/hang up"-buttom, it boots by comin' up with the white screen with the green "HTC"-logo in the middle and some system information in the left buttom.
Afterwards the animation with "quietly brilliant" comes up and the Windows logo with the orange background comes up - and then it turns off and boots up again.
I've tried to...
* reset it (not hard reset - I have some contacts that I don't wanna loose).
* charge it up (I can, when the windows-logo appears, see, that the battery's full)
* pull out the battery for several hours
Please help - I'm very sad about that I used tons of money on a device, that now won't work.
Is there any way, where I can solve the problem without loosing all my contacts?
I did it!
Ok, found out that all my contacts were synch'ed with my gmail.
I hard-resetted it, and it works now.
Thanks for your help
Lol well done!
For people that dont have push/exchange contacts etc, always backup using myphone, spb, sprite or other software.
Cant tell you enough how important it is to back up, unless you like loosing everything right?
Greetz.

Hello there,
I bought my HTC HD2 like 2 months ago, and the first two days it froze like thrice !

It did later show the following black screen with white text:
"The device is unable to boot because either you have turned off the device incorrectly or tired to install an application from untrusted source. Press Volume Up to reset your decice or press any other button to cancel. This operation will delete all your personal data and restore the device to it's factory settings"
but the thing is, i can't press anything at this stage, nothing happens....
I did try to hardware reset, charge, remove battery and put back, etc..

You tried:
1. With the phone turned off, press and hold the VOLUME UP and VOLUME DOWN buttons, then press the END/POWER button shortly and release it.
2. Release the VOLUME UP and VOLUME DOWN buttons.
3. Press the VOLUME UP button to perform the hard reset, or press any other button to cancel the reset.
If that dont work try flashing a new rom using mtty.
If that still doesnt work I would expect it to be a hardware problem, i would send it back to htc or if without warranty take it to a Phoneshop (or open yourself), probably a wires loose or something.
Thank you for replying... but sadly no, it didn't work
I do have warranty, ill take care of that..
Thank you again.
did hard reset and returned to factory settings. all my installed applications were lost. pity.
All I wanted is to install the @#$%% russian keyboard!

If its brand new out of the box, id take it back and get a different one. If its second hand, see if you can get into bootloader. If you can you can then flash a stock htc rom, if not its back to the shop.

Guys,
I am really in a fix. It seems my HTC Diamond 2 is stuck at the first screen (all black with HTC written in grey). I cant access my phone book and the operations are extremely slow. I have tried doing the soft restart by pressing button next to the stylus. Please help. Also as yo may have guessed I am extremely basic in my knowledge of technical stuff so please try to keep it as basic as possible. Any Kind of Help will be appreciated.
I guess you could start off with taking out your battery... But I guess you already did that?
Same Issue
Hi, I'm having the same problem described above, but worse. I have an HTC Diamond 2. It stays at the logo screen (black screen with HTC letters in white). It doesn't pass anywhere from there. I've tried using the reset button on the back near stylus, tried the hard reset (Vol Up/Down + Power key) but it doesn't respond. There's an option that "works": If I press the 'call' key + power button, it shows an update menu with the following: 1. Update Logo 2. Update OS 3. Update Eboot 4. Format User Space 5. Return; none work except for the format user space option, but it does nothing.
I've tried also from the PC but it doesn't recognize the device via USB. I downloaded Active Sync, and an update wizard from HTC.com but still no success in recognizing the device.
Please help me, I need this phone to keep working, I don't know what triggered the problem..
