Help with Data Backup please?! - General Topics

I had to do a hard reset on my phone, I do have a default.dbk file but I can't get the phone to load it up. I put Data Backup back on the phone, then do a restore with that file, it looks like it gets some stuff but not everything. Am I doing something wrong? At one point, it restarted itself and went back to the password screen, it wouldn't accept my password even though it had the correct question that it asks if you forget your password. Please help, I need my contacts bad!! Also is there a way to extract my contacts from that DBK file on a computer or something if I can't get this working?

Lost all my contacts?

I installed a new ROM and the contacts i had on my phone are all gone. I have a G1. The contacts i had on my google account are still there, but the ones i added the past 6 months on my phone manually are gone. I saved my entire SD card to a folder on my desktop. I cant find them on there. Is there anyway I can recover my contacts? Its not on the SIM card either.
Losing contacts after flashing to a new ROM ? Of course this happens, that is why one should use the free PIM Backup application.
Sorry to inform you about this..
And no, you can not retrieve them in any way! There is no UNFLASH / UNFORMAT / UNDELETE on WM / WP, yet.
How about recovery? I think i backed up my phone at reboot menu earlier. I have recovery.img
try it!
Try it! Though do not expect miracles.. I know I never did, because I do not have an utility which enables me to 'browse' such an image, let alone 'change' it in any way
Anyway, maybe you have some luck? Some welcome luck
Please let us know if you have solved it.....

[Q] Lost my WP7 restore files. Please help

Hi,
I just had to format my hard drive and thus lost all my WP7 restore files.
Is there anyway to recover all those file so that I can perform a restore on my phone?
I've tried different data restore softwares, but the files are all messed up and I can't remember which folder to put the files in.
Please help me. Thank you.
That really sucks, but this does raise a pretty good question. Where do the phone restore files save to? And how can somebody make sure their backup is going to transfer to a new HDD?
On Win7, try this:
\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Phone Update\XXX-XXX-XXX\Data
I found 5.8Gb of data in this directory following my upgrade to 7390. This helps explain why the update took nearly an hour to complete...
FWIW, i've moved the data off my pc to another drive and everything functions well. The Zune update page no longers shows the option to restore to the previous update, 7008. Other than that, it all looks normal.

Thanks. Can you show me the files and folders contained in that backup?
I wanna try my luck again with this
yea, the other guys are right, I had the same issue but if you follow this you will guarantee that you will find your files
Thanks. But what I need to know is the folders to put my recovered files to
In my case it seems they're here:
C:\Users\your user name here\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Phone Update\xxxxx - xxxxx - xxxxxx - xxxxx\RestorePoint\xxxx-xxxxx-xxxxxx-xxxxx\Data
I hope it helps
If you formatted your Hard Drive after you made your backup, you might be SOL unless you have a backup of your hard drive after you backed up your phone.
If you dont, The only real way is to find a rom for your phone.
The folder would be in...
%LocalAppData%\Microsoft\Windows Phone Update

[Q] Lockscreen pin removal - as per posted hack

Hi All,
I've been having a nightmare with my phone, my PIN lockscreen wont accept my pin number on my S2. Now before you think i've nicked it check my posting history on the S2 forums, you'll see i've been posting there for a while.
I've CAN access the phone by removing settings.db, from
/data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases/settings.db
the lockscreen request dissapears then, but it wont let me create a new pin as it still thinks a pin is set.
I've followed this thread:-
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1409304
regarding removing a pin, but when i try to reset my pin it wont take it, or more to the point it does take the values (i checked them using an SQL browsing tool) but it still asks me for a pin.
Reformatting System, Cache and Data via clockwork mod recovery and flashing 2different roms didnt help either as the pin screen keeps coming back for some reason.
Would anyone know if flashing back to stock via Odin would help, does that Wipe the phone completely? Or even better, anyone know why this is happening and prevailing between wipes?
The only thing i havent tried yet is wiping /emmc/ (internal memory card) and trying again.
I've been at this for 2 days now, can anyone shed some light on this?
Ok as per above a follow up:-
I have fixed this by removing cryptlockscreen* files in EFS. I can also now enter new pins or patterns etc as before.
The is a problem however when i try to create a new pin, it takes it and everything looks ok, but when i try to enter my pin on the lockscreen again it still wont take it and i have to do the same process again. (Wipe out the relevant files in EFS)
I've been able to secure my device simply by using a pattern lock instead but its not an ideal solution.
Does anyone know why, after deleting the files above i should STILL have an issue?
Remember, this went from working perfectly to not, possibly due to wavesecure and it would be good to get to the bottom of this.

You cannot do this. You need to extract the password salt to quickly brute force such a thing. Use adb to extract data for sqlite. If rooted attempt a factory reset in recovery. Seriously this is some forensics stuff.
Good luck.

[Q] Help with RebelROM

After carefully reading several guides, I thought I was ready to try flashing a ROM. Wrong.
I have the Samsung Exhibit II. I tried to flash RebelROM 3.0.9 via CWM, but when it booted up, I had no notification window, and if I try to download an app, it kicks me out to the lock screen.
So I thought I would just go back to the backup I made. Nope. Apparently the backup got glitched up somehow. When I try it says "MD5 mismatch".
Then I thought I would try a different ROM, but I don't have an micro SD card, and I can't enable USB storage without the notification bar.
Does anyone have a solution? I've tried everything I can think of, but I'm very new to Android. I have a micro SD card on the way, so I should be able to install a different ROM from that in a couple days, but I'd like to have a functional phone before then.
Thanks in advance!
Make sure you didn't change the name of the folder for the backup with the md5 mismatch. If you didn't, see here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=714114
This is probably the most noobish thing you've heard all day, but where do I type the code from the post you linked me to?
Also, thanks for the reply.
That's on your computer. You connect your phone to you computer via USB cable, and run the commands through adb. If you don't know what adb & fastboot are, you need to download the Android SDK. They're included there.
OK, got it working, and I get as far as getting into my backup folder, but when I try to proceed, it says "No such file or directory". I must have really messed something up. Any other ideas?
EDIT: I'm positive that I left the backup on the default options.
If you changed the name of the backup folder (I used to do this routinely, to help me identify which backups were from which ROMs), you should change them back. Also, make sure you're not just copy/pasting from the other thread! The line that says
Code:
# cd /sdcard/clockworkmod/backup/[B]2010-06-29.20.22.53[/B]
should be adjusted to match the name of the backup you're trying to restore. Pay particular attention to the bolded folder name.
I never changed the name, and the folder name I used was right. I checked the contents of the backup folder, and I have boot.img, recovery.img, system.ex4.dup and data.ext4.dup. That doesn't seem right, so I think I'm going to have to give up on the backup. Luckily, I made a secondary backup with TitaniumBackup, so I think all I should have to do is install a stock ROM and download Titanium to restore my data.
Is there any way I'd be able to move a file from my PC to my phone via adb? Or should I do something else entirely?
Again, thanks so much for your help.

[Q] cannot unlock screen on HTC Explorer

Hi, HTC Explorer: cannot pull the ring from the bottom of the screen to unlock it, I have a new HTC One but I cannot transfer the data as I cannot select HTC Transfer on the Explorer to transfer my data.
The phone was never connected to HTC Sync and the data on it is not backed up, there is an 8gb memory card in it but I'm not sure what is on it.
I have opened the phone up and reseated the screen connector and checked all other connectors, still no joy.
When I power it up it takes ages to boot up to the normal screen.
When the device is on the red light at the top right hand side of the screen is constantly on.
I also have to charge the battery on another HTC phone (Desire S) which the battery fits into - the Explorer takes forever to charge the battery.
I cannot connect it to my PC to Sync it as I would need to accept the connection.
I have diverted the phone to another handset and the Divert indication is visible on the top of the screen, so the phone seems to doing some of its function correctly but not all.
Also the touchscreen buttons at the bottom are not lighting up, so they may not be working either, the cable is properly connected.
please help, I only need to get the HTC Transfer turned on and I'll be able to transfer to the new phone.
I have tried the digitiser touch screen on anoter HTC device and it does respond, would its driver be the problem?
This is what I can think of for now> You need recovery, ESPECIALLY yannou's, for that you'll need to unlock the bootloader (in my sign is link to a tutorial), after installing recovery you can make a backup using volume and power buttons, after that you can use this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2044414 and from backup to get your stuff. You'll also need a card reader, firstly to get recovery on the sd card, secondly to get your backup from it.
And are you sure you didn't get your phone into some kind of liquid thingy, because proximity (red light thingy) sensor shouldn't flash like that
thanks -

Thanks so much, but I cannot find yannou's recovery file and I don't know how to do the process, is there a dummies guide on how to carry out the recovery and the rest of the actions that I need to take?
I really appreciate your reply,
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1415223 In this tutorial is yannous recovery, you need this till step 3.
But if I was you, I would wait a little bit(at least one more day) maybe somebody will get here with better solution. Also I'm not 100% sure that this will work... so it's better to wait a bit.
Thanks

Thanks so much, I really appreciate the help.:good:
question
when I am in the Unlock bootloader screen on the device it says the selecting 'yes' will delete all personal files yet jaggyjags tutorial says that it won't, which is correct as the reason that I am doing tihs is to recover the contacts etc from the device?
I am amazed that I have gotten this far, thanks for the help:good:
It shouldn't delete anything! That's why I recommended this.
I just figure out something wright now, If you used stock 2.3.5, Your Contacts should be here(if explicitly havne't stop that manually) www.google.com/contacts/‎ give it a try
didn't have them in Google
I am now at step 3 of the recovery process in the tutorial i have saved the A310E recovery.zip into the android folder on the c drive but when i run recovery.bat with the phone in fastboot and connected to the PC by usb i just get
sending 'recovery' (4728 KB).
OKAY [ 0.864s]
writing 'recovery'...
FAILED (remote: battery low)
finished. total time: 0.873s
what am I doing wrong?
ps: I really appreciate the help
I don't know how correct is that, but it's obvious that it is stating that battery is low, charge it a bit, or if it's battery from desire, put back battery from explorer. Or just try again
Everything looks as it should be.
another question
when I try to 'Place this Superuser.zip file somewhere in the microSD first' it says I can't because it is write protected, should I use another sd card or will in need to use the sd card that has always been in the phone?
What happened with recovery?
Screw the superuser.
reply
I got the superuser loaded and I have now completed a backup on the sd card.
how do I get the data off and how do I put it on the new phone?
Thanks so much
Now you can get your backup from you sd card, at the moment I don't remember what was the name of the backups, it should some zip file larger than 100mb just get that file on the other phone and use this app http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2044414 , if your second phone is not rooted, I'll check out some other description on how to get those contacts
To get to your sd card, from recovery you can get to' mounts and storage menu' and press 'mount usb storage' it won't do nothing on the phone buu now you can brows your sd via pc
"Easyest" way to extract your contacts without root is this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1370349
reply
I haven't set the new phone up yet so what do I do, I don't want to mess with the new phone as it would void the warranty,
can I set it up as a completely new phone and then transfer the content from the old phones backup?
Well for exactly this what you want to do...... Only thing that I can figure out at the moment is to find somebody with rooted phone, give him the backup to extract contacts from there, and then export them to file. This is not the easyest way, but it's the only way that I can get wright now.
reply
is there any PC programme that I can load the backup contents onto and then sync to my new phone?
No, or I don't know for one, the way is either this> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1370349
Either to find somebody with rooted phone, then he can easily (with android manager) extract the contacts in a simple .vcf file, which later you can just load on your new phone, another is to root your new phone and make this by your self, but you stated that you want to keep your warranty(which is really normal thing) so that option is unacceptable. So you are! Find somebody with rooted phone.
Fellas!!! Somebody reading this? Give us some idea, because my ideas came to an end, surely here is somebody that knows more than me in this things, don't be shy, maybe I'm missing something somewhere.
I know 1 software which I used to have specifically for backing up contacts, sms, music n all files.
it is known as "wonder share mobile go for android"
http://www.wondershare.com/android-manager/
install it in pc and it connect ur fone..it will start reading ur mobile
@prabhat228 Damn man, where were you 2 days ago (no hard feelings intended, or something like that, saying it like that on the fun said). @connoga - Just mentioning you to check the thread
haha, thanks a ton mate
btw if u liked that software and anytime you need the full version, jst let me know. I will upload it.
