Video on the TC vs. the Glofiish X800 - Touch Cruise General

How do these 2 compare in graphics speed? Both seem to have their share of issues on this matter.
Spb benchmark results suggest the HTC Polaris is way faster than the X800 (even if I were to multiply the X800 result by 4 to make up for the higher resolution.
However, judging by sites like HTC Class Action, it would be impossible to make a device with slower graphics than the Touch Cruise... ;-)
Can someone verify that results listed for the X800 and/or the Touch Cruise are accurate?

I have them both, actually I am replacing X800 with Polaris because I need more RAM.. and Polaris is slicker..
However video on X800 seems a little bit faster with Xvid encoded avi downsampled to 320x200

Maybe a weird question: Is it possible to change the resolution of the screen on the X800 to 320x240?
(coming from a person who does this all the time in Windows XP...)

Most of the time the resolution is only 320x240, if you use a program like realvga it will show you the real resolution and you'll see the difference.

I think the polaris is so much better than the x800, I got the x800 because of the screen and 3g but it is not such a nice device and too slow for everyday use (it was impoossible to watch videos, it just stopped), I replaced it with a polaris and I can't be happier, it's fast, nice looking and has 3g, the screen resolution does not bother me because the x800 also simulates 320x240 (it's to small if you use the real res), there are also issues with video playback on the polaris but overall if I watch something encoded to 320x240 there is no problem at all, it's very smooth.

I've had an x800 and now I happily own a polaris , let me say... the x800 its a real crap

So anything you have encoded to 320x240 plays smoothly? I just checked some video's on a Nokia N82 which also plays 320x240 smoothly, but I'd still prefer a Touch Cruise because of its screen size...

Well you can’t all say it was crap. I got one because I could wait and not have a device to keep me in check. It’s done me justice, although many times I have found myself banging my head against the wall. But the video quality was brilliant I had no problems unless with massive memory leaks but that was sorted once spb pocket plus went, and so went my beloved "x" button that really closes lol.
now the ram in that is ****E but if manage you phone well use memmaid every so often and don’t mind having a bit of low memory then you won’t really notice it.... my bet is that you guys always had something running in the back ground or installed way too much crap onto it. Eten blog helped me a lot but most of it is just exploration.
One thing that REALLY pissed me off was that the Rom never got the size it’s capable of, 256, it wasa always around 170.......... Mind boggling.

Hi, yes, except for one, and I'm not sure why.

Hi, I just tested few more videos and is not smooth at all, for some reason I had a couple of videos that worked fine, but I tested a whole bunch more and it's not smooth, I'm not sure wath's the difference between them, I usually encode them similary.

Few concerns before buying?

Hi everybody, hopefully someone can advise me before I go out and order the Touch Pro.
1. What is music quality like? Over 50% of my usage on Pocket PC's is listening to music. I currently have the original Elf and while playback is acceptable there is a noticable hiss in the background which seems to plague a lot of Windows Mobile (Especially HTC Phones). I have searched in various forums for a software solution to this and the general consesus is that it is a cheap hardware chip on board that is the problem, not a dedicated audio chip like on the iphone. The only software that slightly improves the issue is SRSWOW but the hiss remains. I am after a phone that has the nearlest possible audio quality of an Ipod but do not want to go for Iphone. Have you noticed this hiss on the Touch Pro or Diamond, would you say there is an improvement in audio quality.
2. I've seen mentioned that the Touch Pro can handle Divx films. Have you been able to try it with say a 700mb Xvid file, if so is playback smooth and what player are you using?
3. What is the size like in the hand. I am used to the ELF which feels great and although I have seen the Diamond in the flesh I've only seen photos of the Touch Pro and is looks very thick. I don't want a heavy brick in my trop pocket.
4. My next phone is either the Touch Pro (have no need for the keyboard but need the storage) or the Omnia. Both devices I believe have some compatibility problems due to screen resolution. Have you suffered much with installing 3rd party apps and if so which do you think is the better bet.
Thanks in advance for any help.

1. It's pretty smooth
2. CorePlayer/TCPMP Coreplayer = $; TCPMP = free
3. Have you tried a Tynt? or a Tynt II? It's a little smaller then that. You would find it considerably heavy since you're used to the Elf. But you'll get adjusted in a day or so.
4. Best bet is Touch Pro, because on Omnia you won't be able to do #2. Because it's on QVGA

Can you clarify on the pretty smooth issue? . Pretty smooth something that is acceptable when you're playing Crysis (though it is said in 2020 the problem might be fixed by 3rd world war), if I use my phone as music player I expect it to do a bit more. Does it stammer? Does it hiss? *concerned*
sound quality is good .. the headset is less quality then the one from the Wizard unfortionatly.
sound through bluetooth ad2p is very good.
divx it plays very good with attached program.
size and feel are way better then the Elf.
forget about omnia and get yourself a touch pro. you'll be amazed.

Choppy playback wmv

Is it just me or does the wmv playback suck on the touch pro? rly bad fps at a fairly low reso
Hmm.. what resolution?
Can you test this video and post back the results? It's a WMV at 320 x 240.
Thanks
640x480 with sound at 1000kbps
My old universal would have lagged doing this but only to about the same extent the apparently more powerful touch pro seems to be, and the universal didn't even have any acceleration.
I will test the other video shortly, do you know a good player that will feed back fps? (running the .405 firmware btw)
You can try also CorePlayer. It's not free though
.. But I'm not really sure that will play on full FPS.
divx/xvid video is played better.

I tried core, it is worse than media player by a long shot with the wmv I know my n95 should be able to play something of this bitrate even though it took some addons to get wmv and the screen was lower reso.
It's a real shame seeing as the touch pro is over a year and a half newer. Qtv says it only decodes 30fps upto 384kbps which isn't very good Surely a 528mhz ARM11 with no radio overheads should be able to handle it on its own though :S
Maybe it's wmv that's particualy bad as it strikes me as poorly optimised for the hardware
For sure wmv needs more power .. too bad that the qualcomm cpu's are not soo good at video decoding/encoding (at least from what I've read) .
BTW, can you post the result for the video posted by me?
Seems like we are getting into a very old and long worn argument here.
WinMo apps such as Media player SUCK and we all know it and it is even worse on this devices screen res.
The latest version of Coreplayer I have plays most files very well but is still not optimised for the Touch Pro screen res yet.
Give it time chaps, like a Million years for Microsoft to catch up with the Hardware...

Touch Pro vs. Samsung Omnia?

Sorry if this is completly out of place here but I just have to ask!
I am getting tired of all the problems with HTC devices, and I am considering buying another device just to be able to do what I want!
Let´s face it, I have had many different HTC devices, and there is always a problem somewhere! Either it´s the video driver or gps lag or whatever...
Now, I am not ready to give up on my TP just yet, and that is mainly becouse of this great forum. So I am keeping my TP to see if things get better in the future!
But I still want to be able to use my GPS software properly, and would also like to be able to watch movies without having to bring another set of devices with me where ever I go!
I was looking at the new Touch HD, but it seems that it has video issues as well!
So now I was thinking about the Samsung Omnia!
All the reviews I read so far seems promising, the device is very fast and is even DivX certified!
My question is, have you used or do you own a Samsung Omnia?
If yes, then what is your opinion about it? Is it really as good as I think it is or is it just another HTC like device with many buggs?
Will I be able to watch my videos smoothly or not?
Will I be able to use the gps without lag?
How does it compare to TP when it comes to other programs and games?
How is the screen compared to TP, does it feal much bigger or not?
Or maybe you can suggest another device that meets my demands, I am open for sugestion!
I know these are alot of questions, but I hope that some of you can help me out here! I am really frustrated that I have to bring several different devices with me to be able to do everything that my expencive TP was supposed to be able to do!
Thanks to all of you in advance!
my 2 cents...
list out ur priorities in what you want and then choose from there...
ie
video = get iphone
GSP = get nokia
.

.
for what u have stated, i'd personally get the HD over the Omina as its more sexy but its a bit bigger which is a turn off. If ur choices are limited to HD or Omina then I'd choose HD as I would think the battery would be better and lets face it... all phone are crap if the battery sucks...

The fact the HD is bigger then Omnia is no issue for me, and I also think that HD is the better looking device!
However I read in the HD forum that HD still has problems with video playback, now if that is true it´s a complete turn off for me!
A negative, Omnia won't have world 3G (850/1900 + 2100).

I think it is problem with hardware becouse they say that there is no smooth playback even with CP without converting!
Maybe another device is better then Omnia?
If Omnia is not as good, maybe you all can suggest me another device that will fit my needs?
Thanks!
I am responsible for the mobile devices in our company. I have a T-Mobile Vario IV (HTC Touch Pro) and a T-Mobile Vario III (HTC Kaiser) for my own use. I have ordered and configured 2 Samsung Omnia, 3 Vario IV, 3 Compact IV (HTC Diamond) and the best after all is the Vario IV.
The Omnia software feels not very well. The TF3D ist much more comfortable als feels really smooth.

I tought the X1 had a much smaller screen, and less RAM?
Bigger, higher res screen than touch pro, better battery too. And 3.5mm headphones. If only it had been available in Australia a month ago (still isn't). That said, I like my touch pro. The GPS isn't so bad it's not useful and it's a big improvement on my old Hermes...
I was trying to decide between the Omnia and the Pro myself. I ended up keeping my Touch Pro - largely because of the cost difference between identical plans with Sprint and Verizon.
Video will definitely run smoothly on the Omnia because it has a faster processor, and is not running a VGA screen. The screen is much lower resolution and nonstandard though it's bigger. That said, quality TV Out will be limited to files it's native player can output. Otherwise, you're only getting the resolution of the screen, 400 x 240 I think.
On the Touch Pro, I've gotten good performance with the files I normally play using either Coreplayer or Divx Player. I've heard bad reviews about unconverted files using TV Out - but am waiting for a cable to try myself.
When you're comparing screens - the Touch Pro is higher resolution but the Omnia is bigger. I can see positives and negatives to both in viewing webpages or images. But for video play and output the Omnia should be faster.
By the way, I should add that though the Touch HD has a bigger, 800 x 480 screen - video play should be slower/choppier than the Touch pro because it has the same processor. The same processor would have to move even more pixels, which is already causing slow performance with the Raphael's VGA screen.
The only possibility for better performance with a VGA (or higher) screen, is a faster processor or better integrated video drivers.
If I were you, I wouldn't sink a lot of money into a samsung phone. IMO they are generally not very good. That being said, the Omnia is obviously not a standard samsung.
pros
-it has innovative interface
-bigger screen
-good with media
cons
-lower res screen (is it wqvga? i think it is)
-NO STYLUS SLOT (huge turnoff)
no qwerty (we are comparing to touch pro here)
this being said, I feel that there is little the omnia can do that the pro can't. with coreplayer, video playback is flawless for me, even when i am viewing a 700mb divx encoded movie
I purchased omnia!
Okey, so I decided to buy the Omnia even if most of you voted against it!
Boy am I glad I did that!
I have spent almost this whole day testing the device, the first thing I tested was to copy a 1.2 gb Xvid movie to it, it played out of the box with it´s built in touch player so I did not even have to install CorePlayer! And do I even have to mention that it did not lag/stutter even once watching the whole movie, with alot of action scenes!
Then I installed TomTom 7 and BeeLine GPS and went out for a walk!
Testing BeelineGPS while walking was a whole different experience then with my Touch Pro, the compas view rotated and adjusted it´s position with every step I took! (With Touch Pro it only updated every 10 to 20 meters!) What a difference!
TomTom performed just as well, it followed my car exactly even in high speed!
And it is alot snappier then my Touch Pro even tho it has less ram! Rotating screen is an instant and overall performance is way better then the TP!
Bare in mind that I have installed custom speedy rom in my TP, and the Omnia is all original! Now imagine what this device can do with a custom rom!
I dont know about you, but I can just say that I dont believe I made a misstake with this device, but I have to keep testing it a bit more, just had it one day so far!

I live in Sweden so I am not familiar with the networks in us, but this is what I see in my Omnia settings: Automatic, GSM 900/1800, GSM 850/1900 and WCDMA!
I should point out that this is a 3G device and it works great here in sweden, it also has HSDPA (Hight speed internet!)
Hope this helps!
I love my Omnia, but especially with this ROM: http://www.modaco.com/content/i900-...illa2d-with-flashlite-3-1-and-uc-dthj9-m2d03/
But I can get a great deal on a Fuze through work and I'm tempted to pick one up as well... this last month or so that I've had the Omnia is the first time since the Blue Angel came out that I haven't had an HTC device

Truth about Xperia X1 and WM - is it really worth it ?

Hello WM community !
To cut long story short, I got very interested in WM and now I am considering to buy Xperia, but after reading a lot in this forum I got my doubts about it.
A lot people says that WM is way ahead comparing to symbian and yeah, for example Xperia's cpu and ram size is almost twice (or even more) as big as any other symbian device. But what are they good for if Xperia can hardly play good quality clips smoothly and run game emulators at decent speed ( I mean snes ,gba emulator with sound or even FPSCE) ? The old, practically unchanged S60 platform can run those things ( and even .avi files) without problems (well except FPSCE of course ). As you probably all know, few symbian phones even are able to run Q3 at a very very decent speed. So my question is, why Xperia is worth paying around 800 $ ? Just for super comfy office tools? Sexy design? Nice touch screen? Why ?
I don't want to judge anything, I just want to find arguments why I should buy the Xperia ? And I need your help guys
Thanks in advance
P.S. As you noticed, I want to use phone as a multimedia entertainment device, especially for movies.
hi,
i understand your concerns.. i am sorry i do not watch shows on it..
but my own experiences,
PRO:the screen is sharp. 3 inch is good.. touch pro is only 2.8 and its heavier.
the CPU to me seems ok. In fact youtube has a vs touch pro video out there.. x1 is faster when switching landscape.
the touch screen is good in response for me. most task can be used one hand finger.
Keyboard is good.. you can type pretty fast on it.
as of all WM devices, you need to customize it before it becomes better.. i am speed dialers .. launchers... cool.
battery life for above average usage is 24hours. (am told other devices is shorter )
CON:
the camera button is difficult to press
you may get the rattle "add on" (ie a rattle sound when shaked )
price is a little on the upside.. well this is suppose to be their flagship premium phone.
for my subjective opinion, WM, especially touch HD is the best for me, that will be my future device,. hehe,.
easy software upgrade, ROM cooking, etc,.
i agree with -G-, my next device will be the touch HD, the wait to march will be ohhh soooo long
touch HD is good.. however if poster needs a h/w keyboard.. then touch HD is out..

lol, yeah,.
The Touch HD is a media orientated device (what with it having things like the 3.5mm headphone jack) and in CorePlayer (or even TCPMP) the HD can play full size AVI movies pretty much perfectly!
The X1 has very similar hardware, except for the keyboard, but that may be used in game emulators. Also, I'm sure that emulators would run okay (they can run on my Prophet, with a 200MHz processor, and 64MB of RAM!)
I've seen both (but not used them, only reviews).
The Xperia is much better looking than the Touch Pro IMHO. It is smaller, lighter, and just cooler. They both should perform the same, but I think the Pro has the better UI
thanks for commenting.
I will probably buy it, but still I can find the arguments to justify the price....
anyway, thanks again.

Depends. If you don't want to play back high-res (VGA+) H.264 video, even a low-cost iPaq 210 will do. If you do need high-res H.264, your only choice (today) is the Toshiba TG01.
Also see my H.264 bible and TG01 report.
not such use really......
Let me give you some real world advice from my PDA experiences!
To summarise:
HTC advantage plays every movie I throw at it (WM 6.5 build 21500.5) using the Imageon or standard decoder.....I am very happy to watch movies when on public transport.....
My old Samsung Omnia was the same, played pretty much everything I wanted to, very good widescreen. Most codecs played out of the box with built in apps. Didnt need anything else. TCPMP was great on it anyway! With a propa cooked rom it was even better. I was happy with it, would have got rid of PSP.....I would happily reccomend this device to any Kaiser or Diamond user as it is very very good for media.....
My mates KAiser sucks movie A*s. Just sucks sucks sucks.
My N95 8Gb runs very very well with newest core player but cant keep up with the HTC advantage or Omnia in terms of its power. You have to run the movies at full size (no shrinking/stretching) so you often get movies that are too big for 320 X 240....but it still kicks it and is very watchable - I just watched 800 MB xvid of Affliction day of reconing on it. All the fights were perfectly watchable (even if I did miss a bit lol)
I can specifically remember back in the day with my 400 Mhz XDA2 WM2003 and SPV with its 133 MHZ....
I had to encode every vid I wanted to watch best to do it to WMV for quality per MB.....
It was not so easy to watch movies....
Then I got an MDA compact (magician)- this was the first small PDA (touch) htc produced......
This was a jump for me over other devices and I found that it would run standard desktop class (read downloaded lol) Xvid and Divx movies (700MB to 1GB) but it was a bit slow and painfull......I was not comfortable watching these...
I then got a Universal. This was a step back from my Magician in terms of its processing power.....seemed to struggle to play same movies...
Then I got an Advantage (X7500) and it was okish on stock mobile 5. Put it up to WM 6.5 now and it truly is a marvel to watch movies on.
Basically.........I am watching tropic Thunder right now DVD rip....
XVID 700MB Mpeg 4 CoreASP
640 X 272
Its running so sweetly I cant imagine anyone could complain.....It stutters so slightly maybe once a min or so but once I am watching the movie I dont even notice. ITs more like a frame skip than a stutter...
The sound is phenominal (3.5 jack on this device) and I am using some skull candy ear buds watching it now. I am honestly thinking the quality with this 640 272 movie is comparable to my PSP running a proper "official" UMD.
I dont want another media device....my advantage is kicking it!!!
IF I didnt have it, I think I would be using an Omnia and I would have sold my N95 (but then I loose all my smbian apps !! )
