I just received my new at&t Tilt and was interested in flashing my rom, and had a couple of questions. Do I need any special apps to flash a rom? What is involved in flashing the phone's rom? What is this hardspl I keep reading about? Is there a step by step guide showing/explaining how to flash a tilts rom? Let me apologize in advanced if my questions have been asked before, i searched but didn't get exactly what I was looking for. Any help would be great!!!
Thanks,

Quick (and maybe stupid) question from a newbie:
I have been looking around and reading all the threads about flashing new roms and I have one final question before I start.
After I flash a new ROM, do I have to go through ALL the steps again to flash a new Rom, (like flash it with the button ROM and then the T-Mobile Rom) or can I just flash a brand new ROM. Or does it depend on the ROM's themselves?
Anyway, I would like to thank everyone who posted all this great help on here, its VERY helpful and easy for anyone to understand.

Your question all depends on what you are flashing. Do you have a G3 or G4? If you have a G3, then once it's unlocked, you can flash away to your hearts content. No need to worry about downgrading or flashing extroms or IPL/SPL issues. However if you have a G4, if it's unlocked, you can flash anything you want (just be sure you're not flashing anyything with an extrom or IPL/SPL).

Im getting a little frustrated that people is too lazy to ready and research for its own.
Surf into the forum, do some research, this kind of question has been already answered in every thread of the forum. Oh my... no offense, believe me but please do some research.
Best regards.
Yeah, sorry, found it after I posted, it was actually on a thread about a specific ROM. Thanks TaurusBullba for the quick reply. Oh, and my 8125 is G3 and I just flashed AKU3.3 to it, works pretty good, but I'm already itching for something new.

You did the right thing by asking. Better to look like an idiot with a working Wizard than be a silent fool with a brick, right. Good luck on your journey. There are a lot of ROM's out here right now. Choose wisely.
BTW, welcome aboard.
Thanks, jwzg, right now I'm searching around trying to find info on making (or cooking, i guess) my own ROMS. There are so many great ones out there, but I have also loved customizing things myself. Thanks again everyone, your all very helpful around here.
Ive read through the relevant threads but am still uncertain so thought i best check before i upgrade my radio rom :-
Do i have to unlock the kaiser?
will a radio rom mean a hard reset?
any other things i need to consider
thanks in advance!
BUMP
I'd be interested in this info.
It seems like milling around here theres alot of files and stuff, but very little telling a newbie like me how to actually perform the task.
Somebody posted an upgraded T-Mobile Radio ROM from the one that came on my Vario III, and I'd very much like to upgrade to that, without bricking myself in the process.
So any help to JPHCCFC's questions would be appreciated by me also.
thanks.
EDIT: I've looked in the HardSPL sticky, but it aint very Newbie friendly, thanks
Hi I actually have the same questions as the original poster...
I've installed Dutty's v3 ROM today and want to upgrade my radio from 1.27.12.11 to 1.27.12.17 and am wondering the following:
1) Does upgrading just the radio cause all data to be lost on the phone like when flashing a rom?
2) Do i need to do anything special besides just downloading the radio .rar file and running the CustomRUU in the folder?
Definitely appreciate everyone's help! Thank you!

There are tons of people that are willing to help you, but you really can learn the most through reading and posting more specific questions you have. There are step by step instructions to flashing new ROMs and installing programs in stickied posts, and there are tons of ROM options available.

I would like to personally thank "ajmoncrief" for taking the time to treat this new comer with respect and to make an effort to teach him. I see a lot of people get flamed for asking simple questions, and in some respect some of them need to be flamed because they don't read or ask the same question that was asked in a post just up the page. But this guy is reached out to ask and you took the time to teach , you are a credit to this forum. and I thank you.
Ed...
thank you

And thanks to you edbutler; no sweat...we were all noobs at one time. If you are still unclear after reading then yeah I'm sure you will find plenty of help in the forums, just remember to search for it first. My .02 is that sleuth's rom is is a pretty good start.

One other piece of information that may or may not be in the wiki is if you have a choice of flashing between a laptop and a desktop as your pc...I would highly recommend a charged laptop since you will protect yourself from power outages (especially in the critical step of flashing HardSPL). Other than that, its pretty simple and relatively enjoyable to customize your device to your own liking.
Hi guys, I decided that my first ROM to flash is going to be Dutty's. Now, before you say "Read the Wiki" or "Read the Stickies" or "Read this Post" I already have, and I couldn't find the answers to these questions:
1. Do I have to HardSPL my device every time I flash a new ROM, or just once before the first one?
2. How can I upgrade/make sure I'm running Windows Mobile 6.1?
3. Do I flash a ROM before flashing a radio, or vice-versa?
Thanks

I have made the words i believe to be wholly untrue bold so they stand out more. Here is the link to the answer http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=369282
Please don't clutter the forum with these kind of questions. I know that ALL of those questions are either self evident...or they have been answered 1000 times before.
Hes right, they're all there, i discovered this for myself after i asked the same thing!
I'm sorry if i sounded harsh. If you're feeling understanding, try looking through the threads in the "rom DEVELOPMENT" forum and see how many threads actually have anything to do with developing roms. Maybe you'll understand my frustrations.

In the interest of being nice, here's the answers to your questions. I know it's a little overwhelming when you first are taking the plunge.
1. Do I have to HardSPL my device every time I flash a new ROM, or just once before the first one?
you only have to flash hardspl once. Before you flash custom roms. Absolutely do nothing else till you've done this.
2. How can I upgrade/make sure I'm running Windows Mobile 6.1?
Any of the new roms that are released should be WM6.1 roms, so just try a few and see which you like the best...i personally love shogun's Death V2 rom the best of all that are out right now.
3. Do I flash a ROM before flashing a radio, or vice-versa?
It doesn't matter, most roms have compatible radios with them, but if they don't then just download a radio and flash it before or after the rom
thank you!
Mods please delete this thread.
Hello. I have been lurking in these forums for a while now, reading, learning. I want to flash to a new rom and wm6.5, but I am very confused. I've read the stickies and wikis and searched for a simple answer, but most of the thread titles and bodies read like sanskrit. I can follow the directions on how to flash, but I really have no idea what to flash. There are so many options and no real explanation on whats what. Some roms require extra downloads, some are full, or complete? I don't really want a lot of crap software on there... will my 6.1 cabs work on a cooked 6.5 rom? Not every rom works with every radio, and some don't come with...? I guess I am wondering why the choosing and downloading of a rom and all other necessary files can't be simplified. Is it just because you guys are developing them so fast? I am not a total noob. But it is clear that most of you guys are light years ahead of me, and use a vernacular that is hard to understand. Please don't hate on me because I am asking a dumb question. I just don't want to have to become a cook in order to get what I want. Hope someone can shed some light on roms for me. Thanks.
I have...
AT&T Tilt
ROM - 3.57.502.2 WWE
Radio - 1.65.21.18
Protocol - 25.88.40.05H
First step is to read the:
[Resources] Flashing Your First Kaiser Rom (For Noobs)
As your device needs to be Hard-SPL'd to flash custom ROM's.
Then just like everyone else it's all trial and error look @ the ROM threads and read the first page to see what is in the ROM and the Hard-SPL recommendation and Radio, WM6.5 has a bit more to flashing and again noted at the start of threads.
There is no easy root and everyone has to go through the process of learning searching as there will be things that stump you along the way.
On that note i'm closing thread.
Good luck and have fun flashing
