Wifi and GSM quick questions.... - General Questions and Answers

Hello,
I have had my PDA Universal now for a week. I have changed it to GSM so it doesnt go onto GPRS, and give me a huge bill. I only want to connect via Wi-fi and only when the Wifi is available so that is not a problem.
What I would like to know is, when I connect via Wi-fi, either in my house, work or Uni, there is no cost by the GSM Service Provider, which is O2 in this case.
Another question is I have changed the setting to dial a 0845 (national rate) number in England for a internet connection when I am desparate, but will I get charged the Mobile network rate for an 0845 number or will this be treated as a data transfer and at a different rate?
Many thanks... I know these may seem obvious to some, bu not to me, as I am very new to PDA's..
Jimmy.

wm6 and roaming

just wrote bloody long post and pc crashed in internet cafe-
so gonna write a short one now.
i am running darkforce wm6-very stable does what i want it to do in the uk
howvever in stockholm at present and cannot browse internet or send/recieve email for what will amount to the same the problem.
the handset is obvioulsy unlocked and with t-mobile,but when abroad last year with different wm5 roms -no problems everything worked fine, have spoken to t-mobile who are about as much use as a choclate tea pot
1) when trying to connect to internet-it does nothing-if i force the connection and get it use the csd t-mobile -i get 'failed to dial' message
2) when trying to retrive pop3 email(no exchange server involved) get new message about extra charge as roaming and then it try to connect for a spilt second before displaying error syncronising
i can roam all networks pick everything up?
please help people
hello,
I've no probleme with data connection when roaming my provider is SFR (france) and roaming provider is proximus (belgium).
Have you trying with another roaming provider ?
as many as i can try telia, vodafone se ,iq etc etc
no joy-beginning toi think it is to do with t-mobile
also without stating the obvious, as and when i can find a free wifi-everything works
are you having prob only with your data connection?? back in uk (?) were you using 3g or gprs and lastly in setting/phone/ is the band set to wcdma (3g) or gprs
in uk had set data to auto all have tried every over type- but still does not explain why it worked seamless before -it either is something within the wm6 rom(i doubt) or t-mobile(proable)
but as i m traveling as soon as i get back i would like to get to the bottom of it.
It may not be your Universal - it may be your provider
Did you inform T-Mobile that you were going overseas? They need to activate international roaming on your account...
I've seen this problem before (working in a phone shop and all...), a customer from country xxxxx can't make\receive calls - because international roaming is not active on their account
Roaming worked on WM5, now not on WM6
Hi
I had similar problems. While Roaming previously (From SA (MTN), roaming in Mauritius (on Cellplus and Emtel) under WM5, I had no problems with SMS (text) or data calls.
Recently upgraded to WM6 (Laurentius' V7 VideoCall) and when landing in Mauritius last week, I could not send SMS(text) or connect data. It picked up the network. I did not test normal voice calls, since I usually dont make any while roaming. I simply used my sim card in a different handset for the week, but it was very frustrating, since Ive come to rely heavily on data access while travelling overseas (for email, skype, etc)

Could also be Radio Ver
Hi all, Could you all edit your posts and enter your Radio SStack Ver ?
And if you can remember what Ver you were on when it used to work on WM5.
As stated in the post, the 1.18 Stack had updates for roaming, I haven't had a chance to test it myself, could anyone provide feedback on roaming with 1.18.
Cheers,
Beast
dark force(excellent) and radio 1.15 will try upgrade as leave country in a few weeks
I roam between China, Hong Kong and Taiwan a lot. It appears data works better with some local service providers only. So what I do is when travelling to a new place, know which local providers data network 'roams' better with my China Mobile, by manually selecting, and trying, one by one, on the phone control panel, network selection part. Once I found one that worked, then I manually fix to that one.
Now everytime I travel to a different region, I just do, phone control panel->network->manual-> choose the known good one.
I hope this works in your situation and network providers.

Disable GPRS without disabling 3G/HSDPA

Hey everyone.
Here's my dilemma:
I'm on the 3 network in Australia, which roams to Telstra GSM (GPRS/EDGE) when I don't have 3G reception. I have a 1GB data plan, but when roaming on Telstra it costs $1.25 per 1MB.
I want to stop my trinity from connecting to GPRS/EDGE while roaming, while still allowing 3G/HSDPA to function normally. Any ideas / solutions?
All I know of is Modaco NoData. Perhaps you could use MortScript and get it to run NoData while you are roaming. Also, i'm sure there must be some solution to deactivate the data connection while roaming. I'll post back if i find something.
Thanks for that. Don't know mort script but i'll look into it.
Also of notice, the same internet profile is used whether i'm on my home network or roaming, so disabling the profile won't cut it i'm afraid.
Check this out... it might have what you want

One of the members here @ XDA developed this app which can switch between GPRS / 3G plus a whole lot of nifty features.
Unfortunately not.
I need to still be able to make and receive calls on the GSM network. I purely need to stop the internet connection from functioning through GPRS/EDGE

[Q] Any interest in a 3rd Party GAN/UMA Service for Android?

Hello XDA-developers,
I have developed my own GAN/UMA Gateway that runs in the cloud, similar to T-Mobile's WiFi Calling and Orange's Signal Boost.
With this service you can point your GAN/UMA Client to my Gateway and I will pass the calls to and from an external SIP Provider. You no longer have to be with Orange-UK or T-Mo -US to get UMA Service!
At the moment my network is not connected to the SS7 network so unfortunately you can't just simply roam onto it. However I do have a way to register existing SIMs with my HLR. Currently this means taking the SIM out of the phone and connecting it to a PC via a SIM Card Reader. I'm very interested in talking to anyone who could make this run as an App on the phone.
Once the SIM is registered in my HLR and the UMA App is told to go to my Gateway (there's a secret menu to do this) then the phone will register and Location Update on my network.
When it is on my network, it is no longer reachable from the Operator's network, again because I can't get access to the SS7 network. I'm very very interested in talking to anyone who thinks they know how I can access SS7. I have the SS7 stack, and the skills but not the access.
Anyway for now, I can assign a UK national number to the SIM so it's reachable via the PSTN. The MSISDN number can be call-forwarded to the PSTN number (not a great solution, but OK for now).
The cost of making calls will be whatever the SIP Provider charges. (Currently I use sipgate.co.uk) I plan on just charging a low fixed monthly fee to cover the costs of providing the access.
What do you guys think? Is this something that people are interested in? I realize without a roaming service it's no better than a Skype/VoIP type service but potentially it could be a very good service if I can get the SS7 side sorted out, it's an alternative to roaming when abroad and provide better coverage at home for many people.
All comments are welcome, thanks for reading.

umm yes please!
too bad so many people passed over this thread. what if there were actually some decent data-only plans...
Would I be interested? Hell yes.
I'm currently using a Galaxy S2 on Orange with their Signal Boost app and I was crushed to hear that Orange are not offering UMA on the S3. There's no point in me having an expensive phone that I can't use at home (or most places near home). Third Party UMA would be a small miracle for me.
Interested
Hi Alan,
We are interested in talking to you about this. Can we PM?

[Q] Classic Dial up with no PC

Hi,
I sometimes need to travel to places with just GSM. I want to establish a connection to the internet using classic dial up as in 56k modem type connection. I would Ideally like to do this with an android phone but i'm open to suggestions.
Any Ideas?
AW: [Q] Classic Dial up with no PC
With 2G (GSM) you should already have a data plan incorporated. Just start the browser.
If your mobile has a modem of course...

No PC. just straight out dialup connection to connect my phone to a classic dialup network. I currently have an SG3. I travel to places where i have just GSM. I don't want to take a PC with. I just want to be able to dial into a server the old fashion way through my phone, for my phone.

Well, as far as I know, you have to obtain connection settings from your phone carrier. Bhere is no difference between GPRS, EDGE, 3G and HSDPA, except speed! Connection setting are the same and the phone will switch automaticaly to the best connection. Google the internet for the settings for your location and your carrier.

Well, if there is no coverage.... this means that you cannot use your phone at all. The lowest transfer rate is GPRS, and it can by dialed IF you have any signal prom you phone carrier. So, if you can use you phone to make calls, you can cake a GPRS connection. I don't think if there is any phone company that allow dialup connection other that in they own network, and if they allow... well, it will cost big money.
So, I repeat: if you can make phone calls, this means that you have signal from your telephone company and you can make a dialup connection if you know the correct settings! Connection speed depends on signal and phone performance!

3rd world country, anything is possible, including GSM with no GPRS . I don't mind paying voice call rates for a data connection.
change the way the question is asked
Background info. I just switched to AT&T a week ago. I can only afford a 1GB data plan (retired). Before I changed to AT&T (stay with me) I had a Verizon "unlimited data plan", (would take too long to explain why I switched). Anyway, I forgot to change the settings, in the phone, to turn off the "Mobile Network" so I burned through 90% of my data plan in 1 week.
I have a crazy idea. I have unlimited "talk" on my plan. So I want to use the "talk" minutes on my plan for my Galaxy S3 to access the internet through free Dial-up", so I won't go over on my "data Plan" limit. Don't want to link to a PC.
Note to ALL Cellular providers: You guys brought the "Smartphone" to market and hyped them to get us to buy them and use them. Then you hyped "unlimited" data. Then we started using our smartphones and a lot of data. Now your networks can't support the data usage, so you started charging more and more for the data and took away the unlimited plans to limit the data usage. Shame on you!!

I don't think you'll find a way to trick AT&T... "talk" minutes use voice connection so I do not think you'll be able to make a dial-up connection using your "talk" minutes. If you're going to manage this, many phone companies will have to change their rate plans!
1GB should be enough for a commonly used: email, chat, news...

I need a TMob Digits guru

I'm trying to understand and refine how my watch works with Digits. Things like how to save battery. What connects when? Do I "need" a data? Anyone wanna talk?
So nobody out there who knows Digits? Well alright then!
I believe the Digits in T-Mobile works similar to my carrier in Brazil.
Actually the 4G of watch only work when your phone has disconnected and you do not have connection with Wi-Fi network.
In Settings have a option for turn on the cellular network in always time, but the own watch warns that consumes more battery and you do not have necessity 'cause when connected in Bluetooth your calls going to clock too.
Therefore your Watch going work this way: Bluetooth first, after Wi-Fi and lastly (you can disable permanet the Wi-Fi) the network cellular.
Sorry, I don't speak English good.
