Ok, so I just got my Touch Cruise yesterday, and it is awesome, I absolutely love the form factor. HOWEVER, what's up with Opera Mini scrolling and zooming in/out slugishly???? On my 200mhz TIOMAP smartphone, Opera Mini works like a champ, and is way faster than any browser out there (yes way faster than IPhone's safari too). On the Touch Cruise, Opera Mini bogs and is choppy.
I know about the driver issue..but c'mon! Opera Mini is designed for low end phones, why is it choppy on my Touch Cruise? And more importantly, does anyone have a fix? Or is anyone using a ROM that doesn't have this issue?
Opera MINI is desgined for that, not the embedded Opera... Also, the driver issue affects all the programs that use the screen...
It seems that you are under the impression that I am confusing Opera Mobile for Mini... I'm not!
Either way it doesn't matter as the issue seems to have resolved itself on its own.

I could recommend the IE Scroll fix cab, that can be found around here, if you need further improvements until some driver fixes come around...
htc is not making a driver it seems just some optimizing for video playback and scrolling they said not sure if it's scrolling in general or only touchflow scrolling in which case it's doubtfull
that opera mini would benefit
being that it's a java program which always run slower then native wm programs
the speed difference could be because of 2 things
1. your current midletmanager is worse for operaMini then your old devices midletmanager
2. your old device ran wmX, X being an ealier version then your current wm

Well guys it turns out I was premature, the issuse pretty much resolved itself, so things are acceptable now. OperaMini managed to speed up the next time I started it up. And after doing some comparison tests (my other phone is a Qtek 8310 w/WM6 and Esmertec...so similar sofware), I can confirm that our TC is faster! As it shoud be, but its still not flawlessly smooth as it should have been :tounge in cheek:
i have yet to try opera mini but opera mobile is smooth as a babys butt for scrolling. it does have other issues tho...
wsmith79, I would definitely recommend that you try Mini, it has its limitations, but its a lot faster than Mobile or anything else out there.
I as well as many others use Mini to browse the real web and Mobile/PIE when we need to download things.
Hi Guys!
Has anyone of you already tested the new NetFront Browser v3.5?
I just downloaded and played around with it a little while and I must admit it's as good as Opera 9.5.
In fact I think it's a little bit better because it works cleaner. It doesn't fill the memory of the Universal in the way as Opera does.
So please try out and post your experiences.
Thanx
Yes, i've tried it too, in my opinion NetFront is much better then Opera, works very fast and with no lag. Other good think is, that it works also from SD card
Yes you're right man
After a long intensive use of Opera I mostly had to reboot my Uni.
And the NetFront is much better adjustable, I think.
i been using Netfront 3.5 form the week it come out and i love it, it's faster and better than Opera 9.5, PIE 6.1, Picsel 1.2 or any other browser i've used. Obviouly it's my default browser, and it's just awsome.
It takes longer than IE to load and uses more memory, but...
It renders *A LOT* better and is much faster and less processor hungry
I'd strongly recommend it if you are doing any web browsing
Can someone post a link?
I am willing to try it, but where?
Gracias

Hi orb3000,
Here's the link for the download:

Cheers
Just been trying this one myself, having used earlier versions of NetFront pretty extensively in the past.
Certainly no where near as fast to load as Opera Mobile 9.5 Beta, but I do think it is faster than PIE (maybe about the same as Opera Mobile 8.65). The upside for me is that it seems to be far more stable than any of the leaked/hacked versions of the Opera Mobile currently around. The downside, and it is a pretty big one for my usage, is that it can only download one file at a time and while it is downloading you cannot even continue surfing. I use my browser quite a lot for downloading mp3s and music clips and this is a big handicap.

Well - I have the opposite experience.
I was using the 'older' NetFront 3.5 for *ages* before Opera 9.5 Betas started to arrive, and at first found Opera 9.5 unusable.
But - the latter builds - 1006 & 1123 - have both been great.
I tried switching back to NetFront when the new version came out (and posted in General ), but was continually having "not enough memory" errors from NetFront. I just don't get that from Opera.
So - for me at least, Opera 9.5 1123 is the one for the moment.

Thanks for the correction man, btw there is no smartphone version right?
I got that from their website, and as far as I know it's the only available version.
Who knows what they're going to do once they actually release the damn thing!

I tried to install the latest version to the smartphone emulator and it starts and look corrupt. Does look OK when placed in fullscreen mode, though (softkeys and menus are usable).
Didn't seem to be able to browse the internet, though it may well be an emulator issue with my local network config.
I like this but I get too many certificate and DNS errors popping up, so much so that I have to use Opera Mobile 9 instead as - much as it is prone to being unstable - it does at least work properly.
I have really been enjoying using the new version of Internet Explorer Mobile in WM 6.5. It certainly isn't as fast as Opera Mobile, but I seem to like it a little more. Has anyone else been using Internet Explorer for the most part on their phones with WM 6.5 installed?
I have. I've been resisting installing any other browser with this install.
I'm trying to give the 6.5 version of IE a good chance before installing anything else. So far, so good.
I am as well with my newest test cook. Does anyone now how to access the about screen in the new IE? I know it is supposed to be IE8 mobile but got got some co-workers with the "seeing is believing" mentality.
I use new IE too. It was one of the reasons that I stick with WM6 from the first place.
So far, so good for me too.
There is no About screen. I 've been looking for it before with no luck.
i don't its to slow and buggy for me :[ i haven't used it recently but i prefer opera much more !
I cant change te default browser to IE
Over the years I have refined my browsing to pda pages, (lower graphics and less DL time).
I cannot change the default browser to IE (I dont like Opera) no mater which tweak i use ( I also cant get suggested words to show either).
any suggestions
I am also using PIE included with WM6.5 as my main browser. Before WM6.5 I would use a combination of Opera Mini, IE and Skyfire. Since I switched to WM6.5 I haven't had a need to install Opera Mini or Skyfire.
I'm enjoying the new IE under 6.5 as well. I find it faster and more reliable than Opera, and I like the fact that Activesync 'keeps' my favorites across multiple flashes, etc.
It works really well for me...
It's also pretty cool that embedded flash animations work as well. Heck even Youtube works although the video is choppy. =(
I use it, Opera is definatly faster, but having favs sync'd is really nice. It is a little buggy, but I dont think theres anything running WM 6.5 that isnt a little buggy. Definatly a step up for M$ but im sure they could do alot better, they dont seem to care much about any of their browsers which makes no sense to me being as it is the main gateway for most people running windows to access the internet, but what do I know.
Jumping between hyperlinks in IEMobile on WM6.5
Like another poster here, I've have 'adjusted' my browsing patterns and only browse websites that are "PDA" friendly; such as m.facebook.com, m.zdnet.com, m.engadget.com etc
Unfortunately the new IEMobile does not allow me to jump between hyperlinks and forms... instead its 'scrolling' the whole page.
I've tried AdvancedConfig's option of "disabling" the 4-way navigation but that just doesn't work.
Does anyone have any other ideas?

WHY??
skyfires startup time BEATS operas hands down
PLUS skyfire allows u to watch flash video and is flash enabled
unlike the newest opera which doesnt even support flash
Skyfire is QVGA, and looks quite bad on VGA. However, I haven't tried Opera Mini on VGA - can anyone comment?

Agreed. Also SkyFire's browsing & scrolling is absolutely far superior to Opera. The only thing SkyFire is missing is options - it only as about 6, while Opera has about 600. But it's only 1.0, those things will eventually make their way into the browser.
Skyfire for me is faster than opera mobile, and i use it for flash videos.
The only laggy thing i think is the scrolling, that in Opera is better.
However if you don't need to see flash content...skyfire is useless, i use UCWEB of NetFront
You should see Skyfire on HD ^^' Opera Mobile is better but no flash...

Are they telling us fibs. Can you post any screen shots of what it looks like on your HD?
Love to see flash videos (not just You Tube) on my WinMo.
well i did a test on both skyfire and opera on the loading times
skyfire took 14 sec. to load 1src.com
and opera only 10 sec. to load 1src.com
anyone else wanna test?
Opera Mobile, Opera Mini, Skyfire, Mach5, PIE
I have posted something similar somewhere else, however I think this is valid...
We have two different types of browser available
Client side (which means your browser on you PPC/HTC does all the work) or Server side (which means a fast computer somewhere does all the work and sends your PPC pictures of what is happening)
Client Side positives
You decide settings
You install all your favourite add-ons (flash etc)
You keep all you log-on settings
The rendering and compatability is what you install/set (also could be a negative if you aren't competent here)
Server Side positives
Your PPC doesn't need to install anything extra (flash etc), as it's all done on server side
All rendering is done by Server side, so it's simply plug n' play!!
And the negatives (which usually make the choice on such small devices as PPC)
Client Side
Usually takes up memory to install all plug-ins required to visit different sited on the web (eg, flash) (i.e, the more you have installed your PPC, the more compatible it will be with more web sites/pages)
Slows the computer, and takes up memory to render the page (everything needs to be downloaded and processed)
Server Side
You're at the hands of the server (is it set up for QVGA/VGA, how does it input text etc)
The fastest it works is by sending you pictures (whereas you may have a dedicated flash player, such as TCPMP etc)
Your log-on settings are kept by the server (someone else)
The rendering is only as good as the server
The server may be in a different locale to you
The connection takes the bottle-neck (i.e, the faster your connection, the better videos will be - you really need a contract/cost limit on your data downloads!)
So as for Skyfire is "Server Side". Skyfire renders as QVGA (even though it does work on VGA, it doesn't look any good).
Opera is Client Side. This means it really can't really be compared to Skyfire in the same way as, say, Mach5 could... but could be compared to PIE.
However, Opera Mini is Server Side - and I think there's some great advances are now there. Anyone comment on Opera Mini compared to Skyfire?

UCWEB- has features like multiple tabs

Thanks mate. Wow! That is fxxking ugly man! Not going to touch that with barge pole. Saves from downloading it.
I guess I have to wait till IE6 comes out. Maybe that will be better contender?

On my Touch HD i prefer Opera. I only use Skyfire for flash based sites. Even for YouTube i prefer the specific application rather than Skyfire. May be my comments are not so scientific but i feel Opera more smooth and nice looking overall.
Exellent explanation -Jonny-!!!
i could see sticking with skyfire if it wasn't so stupid
skyfire.com hosts all your bookmarks and history
wtf?!?!
having to load a browser page just to see my bookmarks
it takes forever...huge fail
flash is nice...but absolutely ZERO speedtest pages load
i must have tried about 20 on google search for speed tests - all failed with 404
other than that
opera mini - no text selection...and no flash...7mbps+
opera beta - no flash - navigating the zoom frustrates me often (turbo is fast)
i'm on a htc 6800 (mogul/titan)
having more than one browser installed is such a waste of resources
i wish someone could make something that simply works...
you would think a mobile browser would be something basic & simple
i just cant see why its so complicated...but i'm not a programmer
its obvious what everyone wants but each browser only has a few qualities
i find myself using ie more...an option you can always go back to with minimal letdowns
at least its problems i can deal with and dont make me want to hurl my brick phone into a deep river along with my body tied to it
i will keep trying new browsers i havent yet though i'm not expecting much:
ucweb
bolt
mach5
pie (what is pie i've heard it mentioned but cant find any info)
any info on these browsers appreciated if anything is not obvious like basic installation or source for program.
just wanted to bump this page
i know it was just announced but has anybody gotten the app yet? its supposed to be going out to carriers and oem's, not us consumers(yet). im hopoing someone leaks it quick! or does someone already have it? if so please share
really? were? site? >_> I DONT BELIVE YOU lol
http://www.androidcentral.com/opear-mobile-available-android-you-cant-have-it-yet
somebody has to leak it 1!!!1
apparently chances of that are low... but!!! now theyve announced that opera mini 5 is coming soon!!! anybody have that yet??
I was using Opera Mini 5 beta on WM6.1 and it was good, but it felt a bit too mobile. Every page I went on was loading in mobile mode, an sites with flash never loaded properly for me. I had a slide out keyboard, and I am sure it was a beta issue, but it was forcing me use the on screen keyboard. It was decent, but on a 2.8in screen felt very cramped. Opera 10 beta on the other hand loaded a bit slower to start up and web page loading was noticeably slower. However, web pages loaded more normal for me. That was on WM6.1 on a decently speedy device, on Android things could be a whole different story.
well i think either one, will be the best browser for android so far. mainly i like it because of that amazing speed in loading pages! even 4.2 is fast and i'd use that except the UI is horrible...
Opera mini5 (beta) was the best browser while I was using winmobile devices!
The interface was clever, the way it handled tabs was genius, it was sooo damn fast and the fact that you could go back in your browsing history without the browser reloading the page from the scratch was damn useful. I so hate that on the android browser (well, on actual browsers in general).
I'm really looking forward to the android-version but I'm afraid it won't support the hardware-keyboard of my G1 =(
So, is there any compelling reason to use Opera Mobile 10 over the Android browser? Will HTC flash work with Mobile 10? I can see a reason to use Mini 5 as that is a fast browser, and is fairly light. However, I can't see any reason to use Mobile 10 other than preference.
Well, if Opera 10 should support a double-tap to zoom feature I will for sure use it over the android one. I absolutely dont like those 2 zooming buttons floating all over the content which only appear once I start scrolling.

Sorry not to get ot, but we took care of the stock browser a long time ago, check it out: WWW.forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=551119
To the op, this does look like it might be pretty nice, how ever always been happy with the modded stock, or a hero browser. Any idea on what phone is gonna have this as oem firest?
Opera 10 for android looks amazing. if you watch the video preview of it. Right now the best browser for android is the Dolphin Browser though. .. ooh and windows mobile people.. Skyfire is the only way to go.
Which video are you referring to?
Maybe I am not really getting it but what advantage does Opera Mobile have over the Android browser? I loved Opera on my WM device and I can understand using it based on preference. However, with the Android browser working the way it does, isn't it a bit redundant? Or again maybe I am not getting it?

The browser has better support for CSS/HTML/JavaScript...
You can see the differences between the browsers on:
http://www.quirksmode.org/m/css.html
and
http://www.quirksmode.org/m/table.html
Please note that the Nokia E66 browser matches the new Opera 10 beta the most. The other version is 9.5 which is already a year old. I'm really waiting for a Opera 10 release on android, since the android browser has some shortcomings when you want to create mobile websites (I shall spare you the details).
I guess I will have to try it out when it comes outs to see the differences. It's to bad they don't add the proxy features of Opera Mini on Mobile.
is it out yet?! :[

its the speed!!! look do this
go to the market and download the current opera mini 4.2
once installed get a timer or something and go to any website(including this one if you want, just make sure you go to exactly the same page)
time it
now go to the same page with the android browser.
you should see a HUGE speed difference. im not exactly sure how opera does this, but i heard once it has something to do with a compression method that opera uses that makes pages load very quickly!
all in all, i have no idea how opera does it, i just know that its FAST. and definitely faster than the android browser. i really dont care that its opera i just care abuot that speeeeeed!
Yes, I agree about Opera Mini, but I am referring to Opera Mobile.

well supposedly also opera mini is made for any mobile phone? i think. but opera mobile is made spcifically for more advanced smartphones. like you cant use opera mobile on some cheapy flip phone. but you probably could use opera mini on it. i THINK. im probably wrong or idk i dont really care i just want a better browser than the slow android one. either that or the faster 3g from tmobile.. but i think even then the browser would still be slow..
Having tried alot of different browsers through the span of my cell phones I believe Opera Mini is the fastest but it may have to do with the mobile view of the websites.
Dolphin is also very good.. I like that its theme able and its relatively fast.
I'm also anxious in the official release of Opera Mobile 10... it will have other features and will be most likely fix the problem of opera mini loading pages as mobile and not full version as in a desktop or laptop would display.
