AT&T Tilt vs Verizon XV6800 - General Topics

Hello,
Please help me decide based on performance (response time/lag, memory, features, etc).
Most of the reasons I have seen for choosing one over the other are cell phone reception/coverage in an area. Cell reception in my area (Atlanta) is good for both carriers.
Thanks much.

Well... I don't have any experience with either, but the Tilt is the TyTNII (Kaiser) and the xV6800 is the TyTN.
Here's a video review.
EDIT: Also, the Kaiser has a WORKING GPS module.

And twice the RAM, which is important. There are lots of reports of the Tilt being inexplicably slow but some say there's hacks to improve this.

CDMA vs. GSM
XV6800 is a CDMA phone while Tilt is a GSM/UMTS phone. Choosing the proper phone also depends on which operator you are subscribed to.

my T-mobile kaiser has a very poor signal!

My kaiser has a very bad signal compare with samsungi600, Nokia n73.
I flash all the radio already, however it only helps slightly.
so I wanna know is there any way to improve the signal of kaiser?
thanks

May I suggest flashing new radios.
My T-Mobile carrier in North Atlanta Georgia must've have did something to the local towers. For awhile I was using a radio that had full signal, untill two weeks ago, it only had two bars. After flashing a new radio, I had full bars. I flashed the old radio agian to make sure because it was the radio with the battery life, but it went down to two bars.
Make sure you have a correct radio, ie. radio for 6.0 or 6.1.
Just do a search, plenty of information, and this questions have a lot of answers.
By the way, those stick on antenna boosters don't work.
my rom versionis 3.03.405.0wwe
radio is 1.64.06.04
and also I tried 1.64.08.21
but It did not working well.
maybe I have to wait until HTC publish new radios, or all the HTC phones have pretty wake signals compare with nokia even with samsung.
thanks all your helps!

I'm in Atlanta, Georgia, US.
Radio 1.64.08.21 with 3.08.161.0 full bars.
Has the signal always been weak? On Monday, a T-Mobile tower was off for maintenance that whole day.
I am in Sydney, and useing the Three network (this company use Wcdma and GSM combination solution).
my phone is T-mobile version MDA.
maybe the version kaiser not working very well in my network.
lol, i was kidding about the cell phone booster thing, they dont work at all. just one question.......how is it that u are so sure that the kaiser has a weaker signal compared to your nokia or samsung?
because now I have three phones with me one for nokia N73, the other for samsung i600, last one is HTC kaiser. in the same place, almost sametime(I have to change the simcard) they shows different signal sutuation. for instance, kaiser only got one signal, samsung got 4 out of 5, Nokia got full.
when I use kaiser to make a phone call, in my room, sometimes it has been cut down because of low signal problem, it didnot happen for samsung and nokia.
therefore, I indicate kaiser has poor signal compare with samsung and Nokia.
and I wanna fix it as well. becasue kaiser is such a cool phone include all kind of functions.
the radio needs to change thats all test the radios till you find urs thats it.
hopefully, I can find one
I already tested

You saying you tested both 6.0 and 6.1 roms. Since its a dual mode, go to Phone -> Band -> under Network Type, make sure its automatic. If not, I suggest just get a new phone.
I think the htc devices do have weaker reception than some other phones. I have had xv6600, 6700, and now tilt - all have worse reception than the phones my wife (moto rzr) and kids (lg venus, enV) have. Also my colleague at work gets a data signal on EDGE with his iPhone and I get no data at all at that location (4 bars for voice, rssi ~ 25-27).
Changing radios hasn't made any difference for me rssi values and #/dB of cells in fieldtest are always the same. I haven't studied the fieldtest program in depth, but that might be a way to objectively compare things.
nothing like that no diffrent than the others i have had quite a few my self i see drop signals after i flash but when i find the correct one its all good.
in your experiances, which radio has the best reception?

WM6.1 for HTC S720/5800/Fusion/Libra/Boss

I am on Telecom NZ and have a Okta Boss, which is the HTC 5800/Libra/S720 etc. Which is CDMA/EVDO.
It's WM6.0 smartphone
Why is there no dedicated thread to this HTC phone in the smartphone area?
Would I be successful in using the VOX WM6.1 rom on this device?
How can I get into the bootloader to backup the current ROM, I tried using Power+Camera but it still boots into the phone.
I basicly want to know the same thing :-/
How many times it has to be sayed ... ROM for some device is only for this device. It won't work on any other device so ROM for Vox is only for Vox and it won't work on other devices
Man, your topic got me excited there for a second since I'm on VZW with a 5800. I'd love to see somebody out there create a ROM for our phones with 6.1 on it.
to be 100% honest, i dont think many people care about the CDMA versions, its really because CDMA providers are all garbage and lock everything down

Wow, aren't we being just a little harsh? Some of us in the US at least stick to the CDMA carriers since they, ya know, tend to have a lot better coverage area. The whole major aspect of owning a cell phone.
I think its not fair, The members on here are making ROMs for the S710 which is a hell alot older then the S720. Who cares what type of phone it is. All people want (Including ME) is Windows Mobile 6.1. Its not that big of a request.

About that comment, Its funny, Becuase the HTC S720/Libra made it into the top 25 most popuular Smart Phones. And has stayed there since its release. If anything, I think that all the ROM hackers/makers should stop making ROMs for the S710, Which is a much older and crapper phone (No Offence) and start making ROMs for the newer and better ones.
the S710 was replaced by the S730 a long time ago, the S730 blows away the 720, and yes the ppl like CDMA because of coverage not becuase of what phones the provider has.
but im in a major city where coverage with GSM is actaully better than CDMA, and the CDMA phones we have here are all total crap. the rom that comes with the telus S720 is the worst windows OEM rom ive ever seen. its slow, its HIGHLY unreliable, it requires resets near daily also it doesnt even have MMS capability. telus for some stupid reason didnt include the arcsoft client.
this is why i say not very many people care about it, it CHEAPER and easier to get a PDA phone and just throw in a sim card.
also im waiting for a rom for the S720 as well but i know it will never come, i need a super lite rom with no telus crap on it so the phone will actaully function properly. as you can tell i support them at work.

Any update?
For those still interested, there is an update to 6.1 for Verizon's SMT-5800 available at http://www.pcdphones.com/phone_downloads.aspx?bid=81&cid=1&mid=292&carrier=Verizon Wireless
This is a little bit old, but I'm in a bit of a bind - I have a Telus S720 that I haven't used in ages, and I'd REALLY REALLY REALLY like to use WM6.1 on it. The thing that pains me is that the update exists, and Telus are happy to give it to me - but they link to HTC's site for the download, and HTC (being the most customer-friendly company ever) have removed all their old phones from their website, including support links.
Thanks, HTC!
If someone has a copy of the Telus S270 ROM update to WM6.1, I'd REALLY like to get my hands on it.

Tmobile UK - Touch Pro poor phone use

My new HTC Touch Pro appears to have far worse phone reception compared to my HTC TyTN II for the Tmobile UK network.
Touch Pro Radio: 1.02.25.19
TyTN II Radio: 1.27.12.11
I've set my phone band to GSM to save battery.
Ot has been tweaked in no other way yet.
a) At home, I nearly always got a usable signal on the TyTN II with some drop outs. With the Touch Pro - its the other way round - mostly searching with occasional usable signal.
b) Travvelling from Leeds to Harrogate. The TyTN II would mostly hold a good signal with only a few drop outs. The Touch Pro was "Searching" most of the way.
c) Central Leeds, both phones have good signal.
d) Sat at my desk in Harrogate. The TyTN II has a usable signal where the Touch Pro only occassionally has a usable signal.
I love the device, but am very dissappointed with the phone signal performance. So much so, I am considering returning the device. I hope there's an new Radio ROM very soon.
I would be interested to hear other TMobileUK users experiences.
Thanks
Mike
Soory, this has already been discussed in several topics:

Does seem to be a common TmobileUK problem!
There do seem to be a lot of comments about poor signal strength.
Personally my signal is the same as ever, but I think I may pinch my wife's T-Mobile SIM sometime over the weekend, just out of curiosity... Her MDA Touch has terrible signal in our house, so I'll have to see if the Raphael is any better or worse.
I am also tempted to buy the touch pro, and am with t-mobile due to their unrivalled web'n'walk data packages. I don't want to wait till t-mobile get their act together with the vario IV (they might include a updated version of the radio which works better with their network).
Is there anyone who is getting good coverage on t-mobile with this phone and if so where are you located in th u.k?
I'm in the Middlesex area, not very far at all from Heathrow airport.
Signal strength at home for me is pretty good, it varies between 2 and 5 bars depending on where I am in the house but I nearly always have a H at the top rather than a G! (anyone else other than me think that the Touch Pro's G icon is ugly? lol)
When I'm out and about away from home I've noticed much weaker signals though, never lost the network completely yet mind you. Thankfully I'm on a "Solo" sim only contract with T-mobile and my 30 day contract is already passed so I can now change it. Other people's comments about the network on here have scared me, so I've already got a porting authorisation code from them (I even told the T-Mobile customer service person I spoke to about everyone's comments on this forum, he seemed quite surprised to say the least) and I will be moving to Vodafone in a couple of days!
Vodafone Sim only deals are very similar to T-Mobile's prices (even better at the £20 level thanks to a limited time offer from Vodafone that's currently running) and although mobile internet use with Vodafone is more expensive than T-Mobile on a daily basis, they both do the £7.50/month for unlimited internet so I'll definitely be adding that!
Also has anyone tried these signal boosting sticky pads to improve reception? (I don't have any experience with these so don't know whether these things have any merit or are just a con)
tbh I wouldnt worry about it at the moment, the stock shipped radio version in my Hermes (1.06.00.10, or something like) was crap for me but remember people we get radio updates quite often even now for older devices so lets see , when the vario IV ROM emerges, how good the updated radios are?
Its all part of the game.
Perhaps once the issues for flashing diamond radios have been sorted then we could see if a daimond radio might remedy the issues?
Just out of interest has anyone here got a Touch Pro and is using it on Orange UK?? Since they both operate on GSM1800 and UMTS2100 any problems with the device should really occur for them also?
O2-UK and Vodafone UK (GSM900) stats would also be helpfull?

No different to any other area of technology, the fact is that if you live on the cutting edge and get the newest of the new and the best of the best, there will be issues, and rough edges to iron out. At least with HTC phones 95% of the problems will be resolved in a few months with ROM/radio updates and the wonders pulled off by the chefs here.
For those wanting a safe stable and mature platform from day one with yesterday's-but-still-ok tech, there's the Kaiser or Hermes. Or just wait a few months before getting a Touch Pro.
Best of the best for a phone which has poorer reception on my network than the previous iteration (TYTN II) ? I don't think the logic in that statement stands up somehow.
i've got same issue with t-mobile sim and pro. same spot kaiser has full 3g reception pro none
So mine's gone back due to lousy reception on T-Mobile UK in my house (my Hermes and my other half's Kaiser have no such problem).
Gutted, 'cos compared to my current Vario II it was a Rolls Royce.
So what do I do now? Risk trying another or wait till a version with new radio is out?

Or maybe wait for the SE Xperia X1. I'll skip the Touch Pro because of the reception issue. As the Diamond has the same problem since the beginning, I don't believe in a software fix for this problem.
Newbie question, sorry . I havent even fully worked out what the "radio" is! Is it the same as a new ROM?
My Touch Pro will arrive today or tomorrow. How likely is it that the signal performance of this phone will improve if a new Radio can be developed? I will have 10 days to return the phone if necessary, and change to another provider/contract, which is a shame as TMobile have arguably the best (data) contracts.
Stick or twist?
If you have this problem, make sure you report it to HTC like I did.
The more who do - the more chance of a fix.

A new ROM can contain various components. Official HTC or Carrier ROM's generally contain the OS (~100Mb), the Radio (~20Mb), the Splash Screens (~1Mb?), and the Bootloader (also small, but I can't remember how small). So they're fully loaded. Sometimes official Radio-Only updates are released, but from what I remember they're not that common.
Cooked ROMs around here are generally just the OS (and sometimes a compatible Radio if the OS actually relies on a specific Radio). The OS is all that you'd really notice much of a difference in, for day to day purposes, as it's the bit that contains "Windows Mobile".
It is possible to flash any one of the components seperately. For the purposes of solving signal issues, it should only be necessary to update the Radio component. If you do this, then all your settings, programs, etc would be untouched, 'cause it's just the bit of code that controls the "Phone" part of your device, rather than the "Windows Mobile" part.
If you get a Touch Pro now, and it's got bad T-Mobile 3G reception, you can either put up with 2G signals until a Radio update is released (officially or otherwise), or send it back. Personally, I'd do the former, as I can't see it taking more than a couple of weeks for the T-Mobile ROM to show it's face, and that'll have the T-Mobile optimised radio in it, which you'll be able to upgrade to...
Thanks for your reply sub69. Very helpful and much appreciated .

With mine, it wasn't that it was dropping from 3G to 2G. It was losing the signal totally. So I would have been missing voice calls too.
Perhaps I wasnt as clear as i intended in my last post here but, as a member has already said the reception issues are most likely down to the radio stack rather than a poor device, this was an issue with the Hermes when it was first released (August 2006) and it was remedied about a month later with a radio update, im surprised people are sending thiers back so hastily!?!?
The thing i would HIGHLY recommend is (once we have HardSPL and etc...) to flash the radio stack which accompanies the Vario IV ROM once it is released /leaked. This radio version (if different) would have the TmobileUK tweaks in it if they still do such a thing?!
Im yet to see if anyone on orange UK has the same issues?? (same bands as tmobile).

Is the HTC Fuze the same as the HTC Touch Pro

what is the "HTC Fuze"? Just ATT's name for the Touch Pro?
http://www.wireless.att.com/cell-ph...details/?device=HTC+FUZE(TM)&q_sku=sku3090226
Thanks
-crobs808
Correct. There is a just a few modifications between them. Such as the FUZE not having a forward facing camera, and the keyboard layout is different.
Switching to ATT?
Ahh darn, that is one of my wants, the front-facing camera. Can you buy a version that will work with ATT that has that camera? I am thinking about switching from Verizon to ATT, and want to take a step up from the 6800 that I currently have.
If only the HTC Touch HD had a slideout keyboard.
There are my requirements...
-Runs Windows Mobile 6+
-At least 256M RAM (not ROM)
-Supports TomTom (via aGPS or true GPS)
-Have a full slideout keyboard
-Forward-facing camera (not required, but greatly desired)
Does ATT allow using your phone as a modem? Like teathered over ActiveSync and using Internet Sharing? I do this all the time on my XV6800 on Verizon and I never get extra charges for it.
Thanks,
Actually, they both have rear facing cameras, the fuze keyboard is different and the Fuze is GSM. The Verizon and Sprint Touch Pros are CDMA.

By "rear" facing, you mean on the front of the camera, facing the user right?
On the ATT site, it shows they put the ATT logo where the Camera should be, and in all the photos of the used or refub Fuze's being sold online, there is no front camera for the "ATT" specific labeled ones. So which is it?

... no... as you are looking at the screen the camera faces away....to the rear on the phone.
why do u want a front facing camera? none of the carriers support true video calling anyway so who cares??

how is the CDMA/Verizon version "crap"? It is identical hardware as the Fuze. In fact, the CDMA version has two cameras (front and back), the ATT Fuze has only one, so if anything the Fuze is worse, but both are identical chips, processors, ram, boards, etc...just different communication chips is all, which has no effect on processing power or speed, etc...
How is the CDMA version any different? (except for having a mroe reliable network protocol)
also - i want a forward facing camera for 2 reasons. 1) because that is the way HTC made it, and it is not ATT's job to request a different hardware setup that is more constricted, and 2) um duh...here's why - LINK: http://www.skype.com/intl/en/download/skype/windowsmobile/
You need a forward facing phone for video conferencing (supported with unlimited data plans) whiehc everyone pretty much has these days.
Actually, Verizon cripples the hell out of their product. Everything on verzion will always be worse because of this. here...
Verizon's version of the HTC Touch Pro is crippled right out of the box. Locked GPS, much less RAM and no YouTube app. TouchFlow 3D eats up too much of the meager RAM. With tweaks, it is a decent device (excellent call quality), but Verizon gets no points for crippling a potentially amazing piece of hardware. Go with Sprint or AT&T if you don't need the Verizon network.
here is the proof...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ej_BENjjeb8
go with the fuze or the touch pro sprint
And here is a complete list of each device and its differences... tisk tisk verizon...192 mb of ram
http://pdaphonehome.com/forums/htc-...ouch-pro-vs-t-s-fuze-vs-verizon-s-xv6850.html
yeah so just the ram is different. everyone here unlocks and uses custom roms/radios, so the GPS and youtube app missing are no big deal since you can fix it in seconds. i think im gonna stay with verizon, but get a Sprint touch pro and use it with vzw
thanks!

Tilt vs G1

I have recently switched from AT&T to T-Mobile... I have a Tilt w/ HardSpl 3.29. It is Sim and CID unlocked and I have flashed a few different ROMs and currently have Dutty's 3.5 on it. The only problem is that AT&T uses 2100 mhz and T-Mobile uses 2100mhz and 1700Mhz so i can only use edge for data. Does anyone have any opinions on the G1 and how it would stack up against this Tilt. I like WinMO and feel like i am getting more proficient with modding it. Is there going to be alot of things that the Tilt will do that the G1 will not be capable of? or vice versa?... Thanx for any thoughts... 1st Post so bear with me....

My vote goes for Tilt because WM is a more mature OS than Android, perhaps in the future will be a good OS but by now I´ll stick to WM
Hands down the Tilt with WM, but no 3G. I find the tmob edge speeds & battery usage very good. I'm looking at the TP2 w/3G when it comes to tmob usa Jul 22nd!
btw what is soooooooooooooo good about andriod other than it is not by MS? heee
I've used the tilt, and by now I have to say I like the G1 a lot more. There's no lag that accompanies WM, and it's just been a great experience with Android. Especially now with all the great ROMs being cooked, plenty of apps to choose from in Market, and overall awesomeness + ease of use.
Thanx for the input so far.... its not that android is so good just that Tmobile doesn't have any other PPc's from HTC that run on win mo and i thought i would get a lot better speed with the 3g... I hadn't considered the Battery!!! I tried a Touch Pro w/Sprint for a few weeks before going to tmobile but it was impossible to lock the screen... it would wake up for every voice, text, or email message or if the key board was opened even a little... the phone ended up have many apps running all the time and it killed the battery... i had to charge it 3,4 times a day... HTC told me the HTC branded phone didn't do it.... the Sprint and verizon version both have this flaw... Sprint repair center told nothing they could do.... i had one the first week they came out.... i don't know if they have jumped on that yet...
I'd go with the Tilt, but it's close.
I've got a Tilt, and my son got a G1 about 2 months ago.
His hardware seems snappier to launch apps and in screen transitions. The integration of apps on Android is pretty cool as well. Infomation from one app is easily shared with other apps in the platform. There are WM apps that do this, Live search, and SPBMS3 come to mind, but in Android it feels seamless. the Google maps experience of street view on the G1 is also quite cool and uniquie to that device.
What WM (Tilt) has over Android, and someone above mentioned as well, is maturity and breadth of app (and mod) availability. With mostly free apps, my Tilt can do just about every cool thing the G1 can do, and more. If you like the Android look, Throttle Launcher can give that to you. The availability of apps for WM is many multiples of what is out there for Android (so far).
I will say that network speed definitly pushes me toward the Tilt. That is one area that he and I have done head to head comparisons. I'm on att, and my HSDPA, available even at my rural home, blows Tmob edge out of the water. If I had to go back to that, I'd be a lot less happy with any device.
I hope this helps
almost just for the face of 3g i would go with the G1 , my girlfriend has one and from experience i can say its a pretty great phone !
