Google Maps Storage Cache - General Topics

I'm new to Windows based phones and was wondering if its possible to download Google maps and save them in the google map cache for offline viewing. Also could some one guide me to where the cache is located. I apologise if this has been covered before.
Thank you,
Akshay

It's not possible with Google Maps but with a similar application that uses maps from google.
Take a look here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=351001

Thank you mate, I used to use that with my ROKR E6, but its a pain to use it with my Kaiser . Thank anyway.

\My Device\Application Data\GoogleMaps\cache-GLM
rename cache-GLM to cache-GLM1 (or whatever)
You can then rename it (or any number of other cache files) back to cache-GLM
And view them off-line.

Thanks mate . Is it the cache-GLM.dat file?

Looking for the same thing Carty..

me three!
I wonder what happens if it's intalled to the card. Seems to me it wouldn't matter. I imagine it's a dll that steers it, but I haven't checked my registry yet. I will early next week if no one knows (and posts), any more than I (do). 4mb is more than I can lose comfortably to a data cache.

You can install GMM to the card, but it still keeps the cache on the phone. It's a HUGE PAIN IN THE NECK.
Lately I've been having trouble sending MMS messages because my phone is full. It took a while, but I finaly figured out that cache-GLM.dat was the storage hog. It was using 24MB!!!!eleven!
I deleted the file and fired up GMM. It recreated the file at 512KB. It's easy to imagine this cache file filling my phone up very quickly if it's going to increase by half a MB every time it loads a new tile.
Somebody please figure out a way to either clear this cache upon exit of the app or move it to the storage card. It sux!

Google Maps CACHE MOVING TUTORIAL!!!
i wana know too

Try here, it's a mapping program for your WM device/PC and can download maps from Google or Bing Maps.

FYI ...
There is a cab on google's website. The files inside are dated 2/4/10. It's Version 4.0.0 (#81).
I installed to storage and it put the cache in storage as well.

If you install it on the STORAGE CARD..the cache files are also stored on the STORAGE CARD..
no issues then..go on, and install the application on the card itself..

Download maps onto dev phone

hey guys
i'm traveling to a location for 2-3 days and the roaming & data access charges are exorbitant. I already have created a my maps in google maps showing all my favorite restaurants. Can i somehow display this in google maps along with GPS?
I'm guessing gps would be free and if i turn off my cellular service, i won't be able to get google maps to show. However, is there a way to download the maps for a particular area and cache it? Any other application i could download and overlay my restaurants on it?
Thanks
I believe there is an app that lets you do that.
Here is the link:
http://www.cyrket.com/package/com.nevilon2.bigplanet
Thanks for your quick response. It doesn't seem to allow Hey loading up my customized maps which i have saved in My maps on google onto this app
Thanks
Hmmmmmmmm.....
This gets me thinking. Though it would take a longggggg time... If someone were to cache an entire area on their computer, would it not be possible to copy that cache to the SD card? Then you could use the Map cache?
Perhaps that sounds pretty vague, but how hard would it really be? The map cache is already able to be moved onto the SD?

All ready tried that. Had to write my own app to use the maps and i could only locate myself on the map. No Routes, no meta data.
Adding those tiles to gmaps cache is what is tough.

Youtube App Warning Storage Is Full ??

(Leo youtube app, not sure if its the same)
So yeah my 512mb of ROM is getting pretty full with me installing loads new apps. I went onto the youtube app and as soon as I load it up I get an error message saying Warning storage is full and when I tap ok, the program closes so I dont get the chance to change the storage settings to my memory card (if thats the problem) So I deleted some temporary files in the youtubes program folder and I even uninstalled a few apps but I still get that problem...
any ideas on what to do?
I'm experiencing the same kind of problem, with the same message only in dutch: "opslag is vol".. I haven't found a solution jet..
But i have it since a day, and i have plenty of memory available on my Leo..
I'm on stock 1.48 rom...
I'd hate to hard reset my phone :S.. But if i can't figure it out is a good start a nice cooked rom mabye
go to file explorer/windows/youtube. there should be a lot of files there. delete those and it should work. i had the same problem and after i deleted those files, its working again.

Yes marctown78, i did what you said and it works, thank you very much. btw, i did not delete them one by one. I use "select all", which include those "favorite" and "channel" folders, and deleted them all. and the youtube still works fine.

i used to get this, i used the cleanram program to clear down any unneeded processes and woulod fix the issue, i have a schedule set up which runs the cleanram program every day and havent had the issue since.
Cheers. I did try this but it didn't seem to work straight off.
For some reason it is now functioning again.
had that problem too but it is storage memory not program memory u have to have about 10mb of free space available for youtube to run kinda strange though but thats what I figure out, what I do is install the apps that I like on memory card and the ones that r essential to phone memory so I have more free space.

Thanks Kikill, I tried to delete inside youtube folder only; it does not work(I only have 7mb left in my device, 6mb before the deletion inside youtube folder), it TURNS OUT as per your suggestion, we need extra space.
The day before my youtube was working, and I downloaded some movies that were stored in my device, and suddenly my youtube is not working; thus, I clean up my other folders as well and get around 60mb back and this time it is back to normal.

Anyone else have any ideas?

Well i recently have this problem on my HD2, after some testing i found that the app needs 10mb of free space on device storage to run, if you have less you will get the error.

Note #1: your phone needs to be ROOTED to use this application.
Note #2: so far, only tested on Droid Incredible and HTC Desire.
From the built-in help:
About this application
This application's goal is to help you understand and possibly work around a common vexation of using Android; i.e. these messages:
"not enough space"
"Low on space. Application data space is low."
What is happening?
You've checked your phone's vitals and it appears that it has plenty of space left, both internal storage and SD Card storage. So, what's happening?
Android allows your applications to store their data, primarily, in a dedicated partition whose size happens to be much smaller than even the phone's internal storage space. Generally south of 150 MBs.
This is the partition that fills up so quickly and that Android has been complaining about.
And the help goes on and on so I'll stop here.
The short version
Using this application, you can see which applications use up most of your phone's data space and decide what to do with them.
You can also move the biggest directories to the phone's SD Card.
Additionally, you can use the app to cleanup the Dalvik cache but it's not the app's primary function.
Please, help test it!
I will gladly welcome any constructive criticism; I expect most of it to be along the lines of "The tool is not quite accurate" and that's what I wish to address first.
To create a debug report (these are very important):
Simply select the "Debug" menu and follow the on-screen instructions.
The whole email business is so that you can copy/paste from a desktop client.
The .apk can be downloaded from nexus.zteo.com/projects/beta/
Update 12/04/10
The application should now display correct stats for phones/ROMs that use Busybox. If you have already tested it and it said "NaN" please try it again.
This should be interesting, maybe kinda Android GpartED?

Come on, what's the matter dude? I did read, and from what I read I thought whole partition handling was the only thing this app would be missing. Single files is a good start, but making that "kinda GpartED" would be killer. Though I fear you should be in bootloader/recovery to work on those, don't know how Android deals with them (i.e. in Windows you have programs you can change partitions size "on the fly" with). Now that I elaborated more, are you still angry?
This application would be genius. I'm wondering however, will the phone still be able to access that data once it is moved off of the system memory and onto the SD Card? And is it possible to actually partition the /data/data section so that it will use more than the allowed 150mb that it has, like open it up so that instead of it being partitioned to a small amount, it just roams free with the rest of the 748mb or whatever that is in the system memory.
A promising app, thanks.
Navigon, however, doesn't like its data to be moved to SD card. Even after moving it back with the app, it FCs (Android 2.1). I think I have to reinstall. So be careful if you're trying to do the same.
Edit: After reinstalling the .apk (without doing anything with the maps), Navigon works again. The packet installer didn't ask me if I wanted to replace the existing installation (as is otherwise usual in such a case).
Edit2: There seems to be a general problem. The next app I tried was mediaU. It has a large database which I moved (using NES) to the SD card. It also FCed after having moved its database, and restoring to the old location (again using NES) also didn't succeed. No error message during restore, but app still won't run.
Phone: Galaxy 3, Android 2.1 (original ROM).

eh? K9 has native use of the SD card if you enable it... Why would you use this on it?
Thanks for doing this testing, guys.
I will install these apps and test them myself.
teorouge: you moved the database/ directory, is that it?
mizch: so, you re-installed K9 after reflashing, right?
Everybody: what about the "free space" numbers reported by the app? Do they seem correct to you? I had to use a dedicated algo to compute them, taking block size in account, and I've had reports of fairly surprising discrepancies.
Free space doesn't seem to update after moving, though I see the difference in the Titanium Backup count: tried for a couple of apps (G Earth and well... don't remember!) and it did move everything, free up space on /data and I can still use those apps. Still afraid to move many apps, just moving one at the time and test.
I just tested it out on my Droid 1, which is running CM6.1RC5 (Not sure if thats relevant or not), and it doesnt seem to work very well on my phone. All apps came back as 4KB, at the top it showed this... Total:261.8MB Used:NaNKB Free: 259.1MB Database NaNKB Files: NaNKB Preferences:NaNKB Cache:NaNKB.

Same problem as above with Cyanogen 6.02, However it looks promising.
I Think that moving data to standard SD can leads to security issue, because SD can be readed and written by any apps. Should be better if the app recognize /EXT partition, if exist, and move data here.

Is this malware?

I randomly started getting 2 notifications; one saying I had low memory, a second that I was running out of space. When I clicked on the notification, I get 'attached image' screen. (I have never clicked on the start test button, it's big, and red... It scares me!)
I've done a fair bit of searching but can't find any topics/posts (searching "speed up your Android" is a bit of a nightmare...)
So, yeah. Has anyone seen this before? I have removed the last 3-4 apps I installed, but no change. I was using L launcher until it started overriding my screen with ads for a couple of apps. This would occur when I had installed a new app via playstore. After uninstalling, those ads have gone..
Any thoughts or help will be appreciated.
Cheers,

That picture tells me you don't own your device, someone else does. For starters, reinstall your current rom with the complete wipe and I mean wiping internal sd too. Remove your simcard before rebooting. Then get root, because if you don't, that would mean that Android system owns your phone. Just because you don't have root does not mean that system apps don't: They do (and you don't). So, get root, set it up for prompt and deselect "trust system user". You don't want to trust anything. Second, get Afwall from F-Droid and allow internet only for apps you use: browser, messaging etc. Don't allow system apps to connect to the internet. I mean none. Second, don't get any app that has ads. Period. If you do, you will always end up in a situation shown on your photo. There are many more things you can do: just read this forum, but these limited steps should protect you from major threats.
Ah, bugger. Thought that may be the response...
When do I reinsert sim card? And I'm guessing I can't use the .zip of the ROM currently stored in my internal storage?
Thanks for your reply.

You can reinsert the sim card once you setup the firewall and whitelist the apps that are allowed internet access (all others - denied). You can still use zip files that contain a good rom. You can flash that rom and then format SD card before rebooting (you can also transfer known good apps to your external SD or PC and later put them back).

Okay, cool. So to confirm, you don't believe any .zip or .apk that I'm 100% sure were safe downloads (roms, gapps, playstore backup apks etc), might be infected? (They are stored in internal storage (HTC M7)). I was going to clear everything but if you believe them to be safe I'll keep some of my backed-up apps etc to save redownloading again.. Thanks for taking the time to help me out. :good:
Also, is there a windose virus scanner that's any good at scanning .apks etc for Android nasties??

There is no way I can tell you that the apps or roms you have (which are unknown to me) are safe. It is your call. There is plenty of garbage in playstore. I, for example, don't use gapps or anything Google. I have no google services framework, so there is no way for Google to know what is on my device. Google even does not know I have android: when I login to my gmail (using web browser), I get an e-mail saying someone using Linux just logged in the account). So, I would transfer internal SD somewhere else and then examine each app (you can do it in store) to see if there are any ads. Apps that have ads are no go...
Good luck.

What happened after I deleted .apks in /system/app ?

Hello all,
I fell into a huge problem. I use a Nexus 5 16 GB variant with all sorts of games I can put inside of. Now I ran out of storage.
My smart ass told me search for culprits and I was ruthless on files as small as 50 MBs. . Now, then I saw a treasure trove of space which could be freed and that was in #/system/app. I deleted almost all of them and left behind some like Bluetooth.apk and NFC et al.
Now two things happened
1) I can no longer use the 'Explore Storage' in the Other category of Storage found i Settings app. It would say, Settings has Crashed.
2) I can no longer sync my contacts to Google as After asking to add account, it just asks again. Earlier I seamlessly used that feature.
I don't know what's broken more.
Please someone help.
Much thanks in advance.
Have you tried a full reset? Kinda of a risk... But worth it at times. My old phone I could delete all the system apps, then reset it and they'd all pop back up.

I have the ROM with me. Flashing that will ( or might) restore every functionality. But the point is why it did happen and unbreak the broken without flashing.
Why would you think that deleting anything from a system folder is a good idea...?
Just flash the system.img again. That should restore at least a working system, though I'd guess that you'll have to do some manual rework to restore lost apps. Your data should still be intact.
Just guessing, to be honest. I'm still astonished that you did this...
Have you considered an OTG USB stick? The attached photo shows an additional 128GB of storage on the tip of my little finger. I can post the links if anyone is interested.

I don't know why I did that. Maybe because I saw those apks lying there and thought to myself, what are they doing here. I deleted all of them.
The next part is more important now. I installed the same ROM on the same phone using multirom and then copied the whole system/app folder to my other ROMs broken app folder. And this helped remove the broken Settings functionality. But the Contacts functionality is still broken. Lastly I will flash the system image if I could not find the reason behind this. Thanks sir for the help.
