Hi!
I'm soooooo damn tired facing thousands of radio issues day in and day out
I'm using radio rom 1.15 and i find it extremely buggy . I looked through the forums and noone seems to be complaining, so i wonder if i'm the jinx here :/
The problems i face are -
1. All of a sudden i cant make calls. It throws a notification popup saying "The call has failed". Thanks! The only way out....restarting the radio. And yea, thats a nightmare too....going to comm manager, switching of phone, and switching it back on....the damn thing doesnt work right AT ALL! I switch it off....and push the button again to turn it back on, nothing happens....i push it again and again and again a million times....it gets too painful. So what do i do instead? soft reset
2. My gprs connectivity goes for a toss every now and then. again, the same ordeal....it never connects until i soft reset or restart the radio.
3. The worst part, when the phone module has taken a crap....i.e....reached a state where no calls go thru (refer problem 1.), i cant even receive incoming calls! The person calling me gets a ringing tone, but my phone's a dead corpse here. All messages sent to me are "apparently delivered" but nothing shows up here....
Is it just me?
Is there a better radio rom?
I restart my phone roughly 5 times a day, once in the morning when i wake up WITHOUT FAIL....and all this is getting to me really bad :-/

Well i see you are from Banglore,im from Hyderabad,i have been using the 1.15 radio for ome time now with the pdav latest rom(.09) sometimes my phone acts a little strangely like when receiving a call sometimes the incoming call icon stays there for about 10sec before the screen comes on the call status one.I switched over to radio 1.09 which i found the most stable on my O2 exec, but in my experience radio roms also behave differently depending on location, and also the os system try to use 1.09 as i found it the best for me in India.
Radio versions works differently depending on your location.
Try other radio versions.
Or better yet, just use the radio version that came with your device.
Do not upgrade your radio unless your having problems with it.
Like our friend here at xda-developers said, "If it's not broken, don't fix it."

Radio Rom?
If you are still having issues, also post back your OS Rom that you are running, this may also have some bearing on the underlying issues.

Using radio 1.15:
With Ivan's base it causes my device to experience problems with the phone and GPRS\3G
With Midget's base everything seems to work fine
(btw I have an O2 Exec - Just suggesting that it may be the differences in hardware...)
dreamtheater39:
Same problem here.... Since I (sim) unlocked my MDA-Pro I'm experiencing EXACTLY the same problems as you have.
I posted several items on this forum, no success till now.
I'm thinking of reassembeling my old MDA-Pro, which is sim locked but screen broken. replacing the screen with my new (sim) unlocked MDA-Pro and see if the radio problem is still there. Just to exclude if the problem can be (sim) unlocking the phone...
But it is VERY anoying, I must agree...

arjan
Also,.. I've tried almoast every Radio rom!! still no success.. even te Original T-Mobile rom (ROm and radio) give me problems...
So can it be the Sim unlocking (V1 by Buzzdev)?

Hi,
I doubt it is the SIm unlock.
I used Buzz's too, originally many Rom flashes past that.
I have Exec with Radio 15 and customised Rom with Midgets as base and no issues at all.
I would advise finding out what the latest Radio Ver offered by Manufac for your model and try that one for a bit.
Perhaps we should start a poll as to what each user is using and record Radio and OS Rom info with a comments section for any issues noted. It would at least help stablise WM6 builds.

That damn radio issue!
I think it is time to stop discussing whether there is an issue and start looking for a fix!
First off: basically all HTC-phones have had a similar probblem, going back to the MDA 2. The key problem has been, that the data connection does not properly switch between mobile cells when you are on the move.
My device loses data connection every time I go into the parking garage, where there is no reception. Also, when I'm sitting in an area with very poor UMTS-coverage, the MDA-PRO loses connection after a few successful switches to GPRS. BTW: You can see you have a problem when Active Sync on the MDA says "Waiting for Network".
This wasn't such an issue as long as we didn't have the data connection constantly on. But, latest with the MS-Pushmail this has changed - the data connection is always on.
HTC and the operators have seemingly been working on this issue for quite some time. The only ROM on the MDA-PRO that was quite stable on this was actually the last T-Mobile WM-5 ROM.
With WM6 we are back to the issue. I no longer believe it is a problem with the Radio-ROM. Most likely is that there are differences in the driver dll. THis might explain why Midget's ROM seems to be better than IVAN's.
So, guys start troubleshooting!
Yes dreamtheater, are you running WM6? It is WM6 that seems to display these problems, regardless of the Radio. If I roll back to the official T-Mobile Rom (WM5) or Orange Rom (WM5) my problems disappear
HA!
Finally some usefull information. But very strange, buying a very expensive devise, but not being able to make a proper phonecall with it....
a.
YIPPEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I installed Radio 1.09 and so far sooooooooooo good!!!! None of the issues i mentioned, it works like a charm!!!
The only noticable issue i've found a couple times is, the gprs automatically disconnects once in a while, but i can ask it to reconnect and it does so without a fuss! Wowwwweeee!!!!
A BIGGG thanks to Arvind09 for this!!!!
So guys, i guess you got to try all radio roms and find which one works best for you, no other go as i see it
Cheers!

OH CRAP!!!!!!!!! I SPOKE TOOOOO SOON
Woke up early morning and the damn things crapped again :-/

If you tried different Radio Version and still does not work, it is time you change a service provider, provided you are sure that your hardware never had problems before.
Bangalore is a big city, coverage should be good, could it be the part of area you are in has bad coverage, try asking you friends about service provider other than your current one in that particular area.
If changing provider still does not work, make a complaint to the providers, it nothing improves, its time you need to move somewhere else.
I have the same issue when I keep the Radio Band in Auto mode (GSM/3G) I change my phone to GSM and it is better.
Ye, I did the same too. only switch manually to 3G when needed. I almost forgot about this point.
Furthermore, GSM mode makes the battery last more days than 3G mode.
encountered the same probs, 4 me radio 1.12 is the most stable one (I believe it's an exotic/not commonly used version)
I have been struggeling with this since the first WM6 Pre-release ROM came out on this forum. Tried all the radio ROMs available, without succes. As said, the only ROM that does not suffer from this, is the latest WM5 ROM.

Ok could you tell me which provider are subscribed to? I use Airtel and hutch on both my pocket pc(universal and orbit)Ive noticed that airtel tends to loose its signal whereas hutch has never given me a problem.for this reason i use hutch on the Uni,though i cannot say that im very happy with their service, they are any day much better tha Airtel and Idea both. Also try to change the rom and see if the problem still persists.
As one of many people who are astonished by the amount of battery drained in a day where not much is done (besides push mail) but 90% of my battery is drained in 12 hrs, here's my thought on a program/hack:
Set default network (Edge)
On launch of (program) switch network to (HSDPA)
With the aiblity to add multiple programs (Java (for opera mini), Opera Mobile, IE, Slingplayer, etc...).
The reason? Pushing email as it comes is important, but it doesn't need to suck up my 3G batterylife. I'd switch it to Edge permanently, but it's a hassle switching to 3G (and back) each time I want to run something that really needs the extra speed.
It'd save a TON of battery life.
Thoughts? Anyone capable of doing this?
thx
Robert

I'm very interested in something like this, it would save most all of our batteries! And save me from having to manually switch it off and on all the time.

What about this one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=54098&d=1192271410
It's dutythroy_black-3g-comm-manager_.cab.fixed from the Kaiser Cabs thread - might do the trick.
If the one posted last is the same as the one I downloaded a while back (wow a few days is a while back?) then it does work very well. The only thing is. it isnt like the poster asked. It works, but its not automatic. where when connecting using say, IE, Opera, etc it will switch to high speed, and things like downloading weather, or email updates would be regular. Basically app dependant.

True, but I would say that would be pretty impractical because the switching takes quite a while.....
It takes a while either way you do it (the hardware+drivers switch from 2G to 3G slow, not the program). So even if you find an app to do this automatically it will still do it slowly.
yo can always set what network apps use in the connection settings under advanced. Just have your normal email and suxh use the cellular line and then have the other use the "work" connection that is set to "cellular 3G" 10 points to the first person that figures out how to make it work!! I already have it working on my kaiser so I know it does also DanialHero has a great app I forget whats it called might also suit your needs well,
im using the comm manager of durotthy and its works great

Does 3G really make that significant of a difference on battery life? I upgraded from a Wizard and the battery life seems almost the same for me. They both used direct push too.

Not to me.. 3G is a bit more of a battery saver where I am since EDGE is so horrible in signal strength in Central Texas. ROM choice also makes a big difference - the HTC and AT&T ROMs offer much better battery life than most of the cooked ones (i.e., the AKU 0.7 ones, in my case).
I run Directpush with about 30 minutes of calls a day and am at about 65% when I go to bed at night (I charge overnight) and can easily make it from Friday night to Monday morning with the light email load and maybe only 15 minutes of calls over the entire time.
Signal strength makes a BIG difference. That is what makes my office mates jealous since I can get days from the device (the Tilt and then the 8525 before) while they can barely budge 10 hours on their Sprint/Verizon devices.
Hi Guys,
I am having a strangle problem with my VOX. The phone's radio is getting turned off every now and then.
The phone will show full network signal and the very next second the signal bar becomes empty followed by an automatic turn off and turn on of the phone's radio. Sometimes it keeps on restarting the phone's radio for 5 to 6 times. It is driving me crazy as most of the time when someone calls me, my phone is in the switch off mode and I never realize that unless I am staring at my phone. And it is happening at least once or twice an hour.
I upgraded my phone to the latest ROM version 1.34.405.1 but still getting the problem. Actually I feel the problem has become worst now after the upgrade.
Any thoughts on what could be causing it?
Thanks!
that doesn't sound familiar
did you try with the original radio version too?
What radio version do you have? There are updates on the ftp! ftp://xda:[email protected]/Uploads/Smartphone/Vox/Radios
The radio version I have is Radio 4.1.13.54_03.10.90.
I had the same issue (not so frequent) with my previous radio also. I guess it was 4.1.13.41. That came with the phone when I bought it.
But one thing I noticed; when I am in the office I am not encountering this issue (at least not for the last 8 hours) but when I am at home, this issue appears very frequently. Wondering whether there could be any network parameter trigerring this behavior.
maybe its the networks issue
you should try to compare the readings you get from the service menu at the office and at home, and give them a call
>>you should try to compare the readings you get from the service menu at the office and at home, and give them a call
What reading are you talking about? Also, how can I collect that?
Thanks again for all your thoughts.
he means that you should check the network strength at your workplace and your home.
Hi Guys;
Slightly OT, but hopefully someone can help.
I have recently upgraded the GF from a Nokia 6230i (about 2 years old) to a Orange E650 (Vox) running Dr Martin Gonzo's ROM, which is very nice... The E650 was a refurb that i bought from the Orange Store on ebay.
The issue is that reception at home is far worse than it was on the nokia - and is almost unusable at home... I did a check last night and the radio installed is a very old radio (doesn't appear on the FTP..)
Can anyone suggest what is the best Radio to use that will work with Dr Gonzo's ROM? (and is it a simple job to upgrade )
Cheers

HELP !
My issue seems to be network related. As I mentioned in my earlier post, I am encountering this issue only when I am at home and everywhere outside the phone is working nicely.
It is kind of making me think whether the network reception capability of the phone has gone down slightly and hence the no network issue when the network is slightly weak.
Alright, so I'm a fairly new owner of a Raphael (previously owned a Hermes as you may have guessed from my username), and I've been reading constantly just trying to catch up on all the knowledge pertaining to the Raphael. In fact, I haven't even decided whether to purchase Olipro's unlock yet.
Anyway, after testing multiple roms, I upgraded to RRE V4 Final 2 (then seeing RRE V5 shortly afterwards; go figure). Anyway, it worked great at first, but then I soon noticed enormous battery draining. Something like 10-15% drainage every hour. Researching, I discovered some people were able to solve the problem by changing radios, so I did the same.
After some testing, I tried 1.12.25.19, and I'm in love.
The battery problems are gone, the calls are clear, and so on, but the mot impressive thing is how well the GPS is functioning now. When I first got the Raphael, I had to spend three days of testing before I was able to get the damn thing to even work for the first time. After that, I had to wait roughly 15-30 minutes every time I start the GPS up before it would start functioning right.
After I changed to radio 1.12.25.19, though, things seems to have taken a turn for the better. Testing the GPS with the radio for the first time, I step out of my front door, turn it on, and there was a lock in less than 10 seconds. I almost couldn't believe it and I was, of course, happy.
But the really impressive thing occurred less than 20 minutes ago. See, I had made plans to visit a place, and needed to save the address in my GPS. I turned on my GPS software first, but while I was searching for the address I needed, the GPS software suddenly lit up. I was confused for a moment as to what happened before it hit me that there was a GPS lock. In an area of my house which I didn't realize could be done. To emphasize this point, I had owned a dedicated GPS receiver before which had barely been able to get a lock in this area, and it didn't lock half as fast as the Raphael did (less than 10 seconds again).
Of course, the GPS is not everything for everyone, but as I said, battery life and call reception seem fairly impressive too. Furthermore, from my searching, it seems as if a lot of other members consider it to be a fairly impressive radio too. If nothing else, considering the GPS problems some seem to have (including me previously), the ability to get the GPS to work like this is real quality.
(Thanks to all for reading!)
Thanks for your review. I 'll definetely try it because today I realize that a "simle" 80 euro phone had full signal while my TP was 2/5. First thing tomorow after flashing latest Lantis ;-)
I agree 100%. I am using a custom rom and this radio. The results are amazing. Good battery life and GPS like it should be.
So far so good with RRE 5.2; but only a couple of hours. Picked up two sats from down stairs in a 2 story.

hi. out of curiosity, which radio did you upgrade from?
For some reason i cant get it to install it said its Radio 1.100 when im on the RUU
I've noticed the same improvements with this radio.
GPS locks most of the time before the application completely loads, dropped calls gone, battery life improved.
Mine is an at&t branded, with the "leaked" at&t rom.

Well, I had tested the Raphael 1.11.25.01 first before moving to the Raphael 1.11.25.19. The former worked well, but the GPS lock was still kind of slow. It also may have been my imagination, but call quality seemed to have been worse.

Upgrading radio
Never been one brave enough to mess with the ROM's for fear of bricking mine. I NEED my phone hourly for work and personal, so down time for me, monkeying with it, is not an option.
However, concerning the radio. Is it possible to just upgrade the radio portion and not the entire ROM. I apologize if there is a link for this already.
TIA,
James
You'll always have the risk of bricking your phone when you flash, but it's not likely. In order to flash a radio you'll still need to flash the boot loader with hardspl first, which will require a backup and restore of your existing data else all is lost. For that reason I'm sticking with my current radio because I'd rather not goof with reloading all of my data and registry tweaks. See the noob flashing thread (including details about hardspl) here:

Oh yes, you can change the radio without changing the ROM. Just make sure you have HardSPL installed first (it won't require a hard reset either).

Hmm, that's the Blackstone radio, right? Even better than 1.12.25.19? Sounds tempting. I think I'll upgrade to it later if I ever get the unlock. Thanks for the recommendation!

This radio is pretty good. GPS works great and I get good reception but my data rates suck with this radio. I originally thought my new sim that was causing the problem but I've eliminated all other factors down to this radio.

Not true. You can do hardspl and flash a radio without losing all your data. It is only when you flash the actual ROM that data is erased. What I do is the SD card method, where I rename the radio to RAPHIMG.nbh, put it on my sd card root and enter bootloader. No messing around with activesync.

Definitely do not flash this radio to a sprint phone. Sprint's TP is a CDMA device and you have to flash CDMA radios.
good to know...
Hi All,
I am assuming that the Vox is the Xda Atmos under O2's branding (it looks identical minus the much better original styling).
We use these for the majority of our company phones. I am really getting sick of them though and wondered if anyone else who uses one frequently encounters any of the following problems:
- Dropped calls (mid conversation)
- Calls not being received, despite having signal
- Complete loss of GSM signal, despite another phone on the same network having a very good signal
- Random crashing
- Incredibly poor battery life despite the battery being brand new, power settings to max out the battery life and all but GSM connections turned off.
I am getting the above issues on most, if not all, of my Xda Atmos. They are all from O2, and mainly on the O2 network. But as the phones themselves are unlocked, I have also tried them on a variety of other networks with the same results.
I am thinking that it's an issue with the O2 ROM. WinMo smartphone edition cant be that bad can it?
Any input is appreciated, along with your own experiences of the phone.
Thanks.
