FAO Chef's - Limit on number of RGU's? - 8125, K-JAM, P4300, MDA Vario ROM Development

Is there a limit buildos can cope with?
Ive got about 65 RGU files, for some reason the very last one I have created it doesnt want to import.
The buildos log shows the line -- adding packages\018878ca-6892-11dc-8314-0800200c9a66.rgu
but for that particular rgu i dont see the line below I would expect to see
importing registry file ".\Registry\018878ca-6892-11dc-8314-0800200c9a66.rgu"...
Very strange, i even tried copying another RGU that is working, slightly changing the contents and giving it another UUID however still same thing happens

registry question...IMPORTANT

hi
in connection with making our own reg hacks..i was wondering if any one knows where does the info goes after entering serial numbers for any app..i tried looking in my reg but didnt find any changes....
thanks
depend on the program some may put the info in an ini file some may add to a bin file could be any number of things
Some progs don't put it anywhere. They just remember the fact that you correctly entered it.

Problems with PROVXML files

I've spent the last 6 hours trying to get PROVXML files working with 1.60 ROM and I just can't... Here is what I've tried:
Created my own PROVXML files in Notepad, Notepad++ and XML Notepad, following existing examples and documentation from http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa456134.aspx
Modified existing PROVXML files (e.g., 'copy' command to 'move' command for OEMDrivers\mxip_HtcApps_HTC_Ringtone.provxml) and re-touched with proper timestamp and file attributes (+s +r +h +a)
Cut up portions of Menu_Operation.XML and placed into renamed files, such as mxipupdate_package_ver.provxml and mxip_package_ver.provxml
Saved in ANSI & Unicode
Used BuildOS.exe and BuildOS+Package_Tools-2.7.exe
And no matter what I do, the file operations I'm trying to perform within the PROVXML never happen!!!
I would be greatful for any help or insight. Thanks much!
I've had issues adding new provxml files but have always been able to add operations to existing ones w/o problems. This is essentially how I split out MMS from SMS on my latest ROM. Timestamp/file attributes weren't an issue for me. Instead, my biggest issue was the fact that my ROM wasnt running the MASD provxml that was part of the ArcSoft package. I ended up working around the problem my placing the MMS account provisioning into another provxml. Interestingly, looking at these files with WinHex shows a 3 byte sequence that proceeds the non-unicode provxml files themselves. Definately not a checksum since I've been able to change the contents w/o adjusting this info and the provisioning itself still runs. In fact, deleting the sequence entirely seems to have no effect on whether the provisioning doc runs at cold boot or not. Consequently, I've always been interested in understanding the mechanism that controls what provxml files get run.
The hex bits are only found in provxml files contained with the OperatorPKG folder. Other provxml files have no special hex bits, and unfortunately, I've added those hex bits to my files and still have not had any success.
The main reason why I want to use provxml files is to replace initflashfiles.txt in every package and reduce the amount of memory used by having duplicate copies in the windows folder and the copied folder.
Any additional insight would be appreciated...
Thanks again.

You ever have the option to pack the soft into a CAB and install on first boot trough customizacion OEM... i know is not the same, but you gain control about the space on storage.
Cheers.

Tweaked AudioPara3 Volume and Distortion Solved

I could never hear anybody with the AT&T AudioPara4 file. I performed the registry tweak to switch to the stock AudioPara3 file. You can use Diamond Tweak to accomplish this as well with the 100db European Limit tweak. This improved the volume but distorted the speakerphone at the higher levels.
After trying a couple AudioPara3 files I decided to tweak the stock AudioPara3 ROM file. The files I tried didn't tweak the levels proportionally and/or didn't solve the issue. I've been having problems with the earpiece not being loud enough and the speakerphone distorting the call. When switching between speakerphone and the earpiece I would have to adjust the volume.
In my tweaked file I modified only the earpiece and speakerphone volumes. There are 5 volume levels for each.
The volume on the speakerphone was the same for levels 3, 4, and 5. What they did was increase the gain each level which caused clipping of the audio. What I did was shift everything up two levels and added two proportionally quieter levels to the bottom. This give none to slight clipping at the highest volume depending on the caller.
For the earpiece I shifted everything down a level and added a proportionally increased 5th volume level. This provided the additional volume I needed without clipping.
Now I can switch between the earpiece and speakerphone without having to adjust the volume level.
Make sure to backup your old AudioPara3.csv file. You will need to use Total Commander to copy the file to the \Windows directory. Afterwards soft-reset and enjoy.

Link worked great for me...as did the file! Good work!
Now if someone could expand on this and modify the BT volume so that we could hear callers on our BT headsets...the Fuze would be the perfect device

I noticed with Firefox it opens as a new page instead of with the download file dialog. Try right-clicking the link and selecting Save Link As.

I don't have a BT headset to test this with. The file is easy to tweak as it is just a CSV (comma separated value file). Don't edit with Excel as I noticed it changed the spacing in other lines. What I did was open it in Excel so it was easier to read and then changed it with notepad.
The values are stored in hex. Use the windows calculator to convert to decimal so you can get the volumes proportionally increased. Lines starting with F6 - F11 are for the speakerphone and F12 - F17 for the earpiece. I changed the rxVolume and codecRxGain columns per the post above.
There is an F18 line that states BTHEADSET but it only has one volume level. There is also F0 - F5 that are HEADSET levels. You might try tweaking those. There are also G lines at the bottom for specific vendors, but I'm not sure when they are used.
Tried your file but it saves as an excel spreadsheet its to be csv file right how to convert it then?
Hey rsw686,
Im downloading your 1.3.1 ROM right now to upgrade from your 1.2 ROM. Is this AudioPara file included in your ROM? If so I won't need to install this. Thanks

Tenxo,
Your Windows Operating System is set up to associates a csv file to your program Excel.
This means that in your case, Excel is the default program to open any csv file.
You might want to save the csv file to your hard disk. Browse the folder. Use your right mouse button in the windows explorer, with the focus on the csv file and open the file with another program (i.e. Notepad). You can edit it and save the new result.
rsw686's tip is to view a (copy of a) csv file using Excel as this can make it more user-friendly- readable. But never assume that edditing a csv file in Excel and saving it will be usable for other programs.

I tried that and was able to save the file with .csv but it still shows up as opens with excel although the name has changed to audiopara3.csv it still opens with excel...
Could you post the file as a csv so it could be just moved to the windows folder without extra converting.
Thanks

There is nothing to convert. You just copy / paste the downloaded file onto your device. I place it on the storage card and then use total commander to copy / paste it into Windows.

You are very correct...It shows as a excel file on my CP but on the phone it shows as correct csv file...I feel so silly for not moving it over to the phone first to check it.
Thanks
Downloaded fine and copied to to the \Windows directory. Do I still need to modify the registry so the system knows to use the new tweaked AudioPara3 file?
I do not have access to a PC at the moment. When trying to dowload AudioPara3 file from thread it open in a new window in Opera on my phone.
Guess I need to download later at home.
As far as I can tell this particular file didn't make any difference on my phone. I put the file in my \windows directory and changed the registry setting to point to this new audiopar3 file and rebooted. Still sounds the same. Did I miss any steps?

Have you used diamond tweak to disable the 100db sound limitation? This can also be accomplished with a registry editor. The key to change is
HKLM\Drivers\BuiltIn\WaveDev\AcousticFile
The stock value is \windows\AudioPara4-xxxxxx.csv. The x's vary depending on the provider. You need to change this to \windows\AudioPara3.csv which will tell it to use my tweaked file.

No, I didn't use the Diamond Tweak, I simply changed the registry settings (the same ones you indicated above) from the stock \windows\AudioPara4-_att_20080703.csv to \windows\AudioPara3.csv After that I performed a soft reset.
Is this audiopara3 the same size file as the original one, 67.2k I'm just trying to make sure that the file I copied is the right one.

Mine shows 67.2k in the file explorer. You might try downloading the file from your phone and comparing it. What did you use to copy it to the \Windows directory. I know that Total Commander works well for this. I'm fairly sure you did this, but you did make sure the volume was turned all the way up when making a call?

Mine shows the same size in Explorer as well. I used Total Commander to copy the file (which I put on my storage card) to the clipboard. Then I navigated in TC to the \windows directory and did a paste. Yeah, I turned up the volume
Maybe I'll try downloading the file again. Can the file be downloaded directly to the phone or must I use a pc? When I tried it with the phone it just opened the .csv

Sounds like you did everything right. Here's a zipped version that should download directly to the phone. It could be that you might need to tweak the file louder. I bumped it up a notch which made a big difference to me, but maybe not as much for others.

Notepad Inserts Invisible Characters?

I'm trying to figure this strange behavior that has driven me nuts. I've attached two files that are part of a Igo GPS skin I edit. When I open place.ui and save any edits, notepad will insert invisible characters at the beginning of the file. You can confirm this by examining the file with a hex editor. If you edit common.ui with notepad, the same does not happen. The invisible characters inside place.ui causes my skin to fail to load. So I have to manually delete the invisible characters using a hex editor every time I edit the file. This happens on both my XP and Windows 7 systems.
Can anyone explain why this happen?
I don't care which text editor you think I should use. I just care about understanding why this one file gets the characters inserted into it. How is it special? Edit the file yourself and you'll see. Just add a space anywhere but the beginning of the file and save it.
Thanks!
Wow that is weird.
No idea as to why it happens but it always happens when I use notepad to edit files that were created using dreamweaver.
I have to use free version of HHD Software Hex Editor Neo to remove them.
I found your question as a search result to my own googling of "notepad inserts weird characters in beginning of file" while trying to find out what the actual issue is so I can let the guys who provide me templates made with dreamweaver someway to end the annoying situation.

This is what is causing the problem: "é"
found in the word "azért" in the comments section. It seems to have been copied and pasted from another source and brought invisible characters with itself.

Have another Thanks from me for this, man... let me find some very useful things.
BTW, the XML file in the CAB appears to be standard provxml format; I just opened it in notepad, copied the pieces I wanted into another file, made a few changes, renamed it CustClear.provxml, and loaded it with Connection Setup. Worked great!
Thank you. drkfngthdragnlrd

Is this registry pulled from your phone or from a cooked ROM you flashed? Is there a way to dump the registry from a Mango phone itself? Thanks

They were from my phone. I had a stock ROM & upgraded to 7720.68 via the leaked method here on XDA. I than, copied out all the RGU's in \Windows\ of my phone. I merged all these RGU's into 1 large file & imported it into WinCE CAB Manager. Being as they are RGU's this is not the full registry. There are some values that aren't written till after first boot/run by the executables of WP7. I'd say this CAB is 90+% of all the registry.

Excellent! Another question; I am really after my exchange activesync registry keys; do you know if these are in any of the RGU files (I am thinking not)? When you add an account (be it POP3, IMAP4, EAS) does this get generated with an RGU that is accessible?
P.S. I have been using the 30day demo of WinCE CAB Manager and love how it shows the tree structure of your file. Was there any particular trick to merging the RGUs?

I'm not sure about the Active sync thing. I'd assume they get written once you set up your email accounts. You could look, I have no clue of the top of my head, not something I looked into.
As for merging the RGU's, I used Visual Studio, but you can use any text editor to open them. My only suggestion is to pay close attention & make sure you copy & paste correctly. Also, you only need the first line "REGEDIT 4.0 or something like that once. So don't copy the extra entries from the other RGU's.

Yeah, it's nice to have a use for WinCE CAB Manager in WP7 as it's no longer useful for creating CAB's that are installable.
@drkfngthdragnlrd - I did this on NoDo for a start (easy to get RGU to PC) but how did you go about it in Mango? I was reading along in the other thread where there were discussions about this but nothing clearly stated.

I used TouchXplorer to copy the files into an app's Isolated Store & than used [APP 2011-08-20][BETA] WP7AppBackup - Backup / Restore third party app data to back-up the app data. Than you just look inside the back-up files.
