I'm trying to figure this strange behavior that has driven me nuts. I've attached two files that are part of a Igo GPS skin I edit. When I open place.ui and save any edits, notepad will insert invisible characters at the beginning of the file. You can confirm this by examining the file with a hex editor. If you edit common.ui with notepad, the same does not happen. The invisible characters inside place.ui causes my skin to fail to load. So I have to manually delete the invisible characters using a hex editor every time I edit the file. This happens on both my XP and Windows 7 systems.
Can anyone explain why this happen?
I don't care which text editor you think I should use. I just care about understanding why this one file gets the characters inserted into it. How is it special? Edit the file yourself and you'll see. Just add a space anywhere but the beginning of the file and save it.
Thanks!
Wow that is weird.
No idea as to why it happens but it always happens when I use notepad to edit files that were created using dreamweaver.
I have to use free version of HHD Software Hex Editor Neo to remove them.
I found your question as a search result to my own googling of "notepad inserts weird characters in beginning of file" while trying to find out what the actual issue is so I can let the guys who provide me templates made with dreamweaver someway to end the annoying situation.

This is what is causing the problem: "é"
found in the word "azért" in the comments section. It seems to have been copied and pasted from another source and brought invisible characters with itself.

I have been wanting to add folders for some time to my quicklinks. I researched and researched.
I came across this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=576232
However it only dealt with a few categories.
So I have created new .lnk files and asscociated them with .png folder icons and created the necessary registry files.
This will work if you have 9, 12 or 16 Quick Links. For 20 Quick Links I think it will still work but you have to assign the Quick Links yourself.
Just unzip the attached file, read the read me and copy the Programs Folder to your phone and inport the enclosed registry entry too. Reset.
great idea! i wondered why 20 quicklinks are enough for all people here. i just have installed a few apps and games and my quicklink bar is full!
are you going to make the quicklinks for the 20 icon bar?
Great work, thanks.

If 25 links is enough for you? See this thread, from the same guy who created the 20 links on Home tab.
thanks, i've already seen the 25 link thread! i think it will be more flexible with folder links to group games etc. but maybe i'm going to use both tweaks:
normal links for most important apps and folder links for games, system information and so on...

Bit of a noob question but why can't you just create links to the default folders and then run these. I tried this but it always says fails to open "games application".

Just to add to my last, I have an HD with 2.5.1922011 Nrgz ROM but can't seem to import the registry settings. Have used TRE and it states that registry import was successful but to no avail. I have tried hand modifying the entries but still not working. Am I missing something???
Not working
Changed the registry to my portuguese ROM and nothing!
Maybe this only works on WWE roms because of the registry names. If importing the registry does not work for you, try just adding the folders manually to your quick links in the normal way you would add apps. just look fit the folder.link file in the list. let me know.

Hi, in attach is an export of my regfile.
I have put in "sistema" the system.lnk and system.png and renamed it to Portuguese: sistema.lnk and sistema.png
Even so when i click in the home tab in icon (that shows your png file) it says,
" Its not possible to open the file "sistema". Or is not signed with a certificate or cannot find the components.

This is exactly what happens to me and my ROM is WWE. I can link the folder but it will not open. Tried manually editing the registry but without success. There must be another step but for the life of me I can't figure it out and it's driving me crazy!! This should be simple but HTC make it extremely difficult.

Hi!
I had the very same problem.
The recommendations given here, I use too, but I remembered a small program usually used for maintaining a directory organisation with PortableApps on the PC. It just uses its own name (like 'games.exe') extracts the '.exe' out of it and opens the reaining 'games' as a directory. I found this was a brute, but very useful solution to the problem. So finally I did that app for mobile devices on my own. It is written in C#. Prerequisites are compact framework 3.5.
In my opinion its only drawback is, that it uses the file-explorer as a platform to view the directory. I would like the HTC view with icons more, but I don't know, how to call the required code to do so.
Personally I have installed 4 instances of the program (240kb) on the storage-card and created the links to them in the startmenu-folder. This works fine with directlinks.
Note: Only subfolders in /windows/startmenu/programs are opened! For other needs the source code is easily changeable.
Here comes a short description:
----------------------------------------------------------------
Prerequisites: Microsoft Compact Framework 3.5.
Install and usage description:
MobDir.Cab installs the file MobDir.exe into your 'prorams' directory.
Since MobDir reads in its very own name to function, it is of utmost importance to RENAME MobDir.exe to a directory name, that fits for your environment!
MobDir starts a File-Explorer directly in a directory that resides in your /windows/start menu/programs
directory.
e.g.: There is a dir called 'games' in your 'programs' directory of 'start menu', that contains all the links to your games on the device. Rename MobDir.Exe accordingly into 'games.exe'. If the program is already installed in your 'start menu/programs' directory, there is not much more to do for you. Simply select games.exe in your directlinks. There you have a directory-icon labeled 'games' then which, when clicked, opens the file-explorer in your games directory. If games.exe resides on your starage card, you have to create a games.lnk into the 'start menu/programs' directory first.
Of course, if you have more subdirectories in your 'start menu/programs' folder, which is most likely the case ('apps', 'tools' for instance), just copy the file MobDir.Exe under these names to your device. In this example as apps.exe and tools.exe. The rest is the same as written beforehand.
Sounds more complicated as it is, just try it, it's simple.
Note: The way it works can be followed by watching the source code. It first reads in its own filename (e.g.: 'games.exe'). Then it extracts the '.exe' out of the name (leaving a 'games'). Right after it looks for your current localized '/windows/start menu/programs/' path and adds the string to it, which we extracted beforehand. So we have a path 'windows/start menu/programs/games'. Finally the file-explorer is called with that path as a parameter.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Here is the source-code:
Code:
using System;
namespace MobDir
{
static class Program
{
[MTAThread]
static void Main()
{
string cFileNameSelf="Use this Base-Code as a sample. Written in '2010 bei D.Bos";
try
{
//read out own filename and strip out ".EXE"
cFileNameSelf = AppDomain.CurrentDomain.FriendlyName.ToUpper().Replace(".EXE", "");
//start File-Explorer, given the path to /windows/startmenu/programs/ + <NameSelf>
System.Diagnostics.Process p = System.Diagnostics.Process.Start("fexplore.exe", ReadSpecialFolder("Programs") + "\\" + cFileNameSelf + "\\");
p.WaitForExit();
}
catch (System.Exception e)
{
System.Windows.Forms.MessageBox.Show("Problem with <" + cFileNameSelf + ">!\n" + e.Message);
}
}
public static string ReadSpecialFolder(string cVarName)
{
return Environment.GetFolderPath((Environment.SpecialFolder)Enum.Parse(typeof(Environment.SpecialFolder), cVarName, true));
}
}
}
-----------------------------------------------------------
And finally: The file MobDir.Cab is attached to this posting.
Hopefully you can make some use of it.
Dietmar

I suspect this is your problem. Windows uses a different indicator for the end-of-line (EOL) than UNIX/Linux/Android.
Specifically, Windows uses a Carriage Return (CR) followed by a Line Feed (LF) whereas UNIX(ish) uses just a LF. The CR is seen by the UNIX system as just part of the command. But, one it doesn't know how to process.
I'm guessing you don't have CYGWIN or the like handy. Nor do you have a Linux system. So, the easiest solution would be to use a text editor that knows the difference. Hmm. Let me check something...
As I suspected, it looks like my favorite text editor can handle it. Notepad++. Google can find it for you. The setting is in Settings->Preferences->New Document/Default Directory->Format.
However, if you use Notepad++ for anything else, make sure you use the appropriate setting. Many windows programs will get very confused with UNIX EOLs. If the file is correct, it should appear to be smashed into one line when you open it with Notepad.
Oh yeah, I think WordPad might be able to cope. Not sure.

Notepad++ works perfectly. Thanks. Also, I was able to take a theme that I download from someone else and make the necessary changes and flash it. Thanks for your help.
so i searched around a bit and found out that there's an eng.dat file located somewhere in the installation files. but the issue is no one can open it. we've tried notepad, wordpad etc but you just can't open it. even tried changing the extension to .txt, but that won't help either.
does anyone know what program i should use to open the file? i basically want to do it because there are a LOT of unnecessary words in the dictionary and it's tedious to type the word and then press the minus sign.
bump or even how to add a blank english dictionary i would rather add my own to it with words i use,,,,,right now i try to delete every single word i come across that i don't use. This would be a great keyboard if the dictionary only had practical words for texting.

I saw a thread listed for the Transformer Prime similar to this, but none here.
While travelling, I used Polaris and a bluetooth keyboard to work on a paper I'd started at my PC, in Word .docx format. (I use Dropbox and Dropsync on my GNote to keep the files synced.)
I was really happy with how well Polaris seemed to work as a Word compatible tool, especially with the BT keyboard. I also have OfficePro and DocsToGo Pro, which I had used interchangeably prior to this, but Polaris seemed like a possible all-in-one replacement. As a note, my main issue with DocsToGo is that it won't open a lot of inserted images and tables within Word docs. OfficePro and Polaris display them, DocsToGo often just puts in a square outline of them, with text "unsupported format" or similar. (They are screen grabs pasted in, not any unusual formats. Go figure.)
Well, I just opened up the Word doc on my PC. The good news is that the ten pages I added while traveling are there, so I won't have to rewrite them.
But the bad news is that Polaris somehow corrupted hundreds of line breaks/word wraps. So now, inexplicably, the word mortgage is split on to two lines as "mo" and "rtgage." This error is repeated throughout the document. Worse, the error is not only at the start and end of lines where it is easy to find, but some words are split in the middle of a line, such as "e conomy."
Anyone else see this behavior before?
-JC
EDIT: Thankfully, Dropbox is awesome and automatically caches previous versions, so I only have to fix the pages I added while travelling and paste them in to the previous properly formatted version.
I have this exact same issue as well, and it persists when copying and pasting the text to a word doc. I don't have a solution, just wanted to add my voice to hopefully get this resolved.

I did find a workaround for this issue just right now. Simply copy the text from the corrupted Word doc to Notepad, then re-copy the text from Notepad and back into a new Word doc. The formatting is lost, but so is the annoying text wrapping.

A faster way with the same results is to clear all formatting of the text. Select this option from the Style menu. Offcourse, afterwords you should format again. You will see Polaris messed up all standard Word styles...
To fix this problem in Word, open the document, in the Styles menu - Change Styles - Style Set - Reset to Quick Styles from Template. Save the doc, re-open it and it should be fixed.
I took the area codes from North American Numbering Plan Administration: NANPA
and played with it in excel to get a list of all area codes in North America (Canada, US, and random countries that use NANPA codes) and made a wildcard blacklist
if you have a fresh install of Root Call Blocker 2, make a backup in the app settings to sdcard, drive, etc.
open the rcb2.bck file with an unzipping program.
download the database.txt file & rename it to database.ent
overwrite the database.ent file with the one attached.
rezip all of the files and rename the zip to rcb2.bck then reimport into Root Call Blocker
It will overwrite your blacklists and whitelists so make sure you're ok with that but you can add them back later.
Make sure to remove area codes you talk to frequently since we're blocking the whole continent.
I'd probably do that and then set your blacklist to send to voicemail so you're not simply rejecting other area codes. Doing it this way instead of the file/csv import let me name the area codes with state names. I guess I could spend some more time finding a resource that showed the metro area for each individual area code but I didn't get that from the file I used off the NANPA website but if anyone wants to run with it it isn't that difficult to reproduce this. I'll also add the Excel file that formatted it all. You'd just copy the J column into that database.ent file somewhere in the TABLE =entries section.
I'm probably not going to check this thread. I just figured I'd post it somewhere.
Great job. It works properly. Just a question: how can I integrate my old blacklist?

is it a bunch of numbers?
Just say use that Excel file to add more then plop them in the database.txt, rename to database.ent... and the rest of the instructions
ROW =371;;=2220;=;=wy;=WY;=307*;;;=2;=1;=1;=0;=0;=1;=1;=0;=2;=1;=0;
each row is arbitrary. You could have a row 99999 as long is it's not being used already
you'd just need to fill in the bold parts... or just use that Excel file and make more rows copying the formula from the last rows then fill in the blanks
copy the last column and it makes a preformatted row.
I assume the =2;=1 stuff are flags are the options for an entry. I just left it at the default actions
sorry for replying so late!
It wouldn't be difficult to add more but hopefully this files take some of the work out of it
I used a text editor like
Notepad++ or gedit
7zip to compress & uncompress things
and LibreOffice Calc or MS Office Excel
... or just start with this and start blocking numbers later if you aren't too concerned with what you've blocked. You're blocking with extreme prejudice if you use this file anyways
