Opera mini small fonts poorly implemented - General Topics

Hi !
I noticed a while ago that the small fonts in Opera Mini (latest 3 version - non beta, and all the 4 betas) have a rectangle around them which doesn't match the background... It's like the letter background is not completely transparent (it darkens the area around a letter). If you can't see this, try looking at the screen at an angle. Note: This only happens with SMALL fonts.
Is this an Opera Mini prolem or a JVM problem (i'm not sure who draws the font...) ?
Actually i could have sent this as PM to Menneisyys, but i thought maybe i start some talk...
The reason i'm asking this is because it's the last issue i have with Opera Mini, and maybe i should look for another JVM (useless if Opera draws the fonts and not the JVM)...
Thanks!

See section "6.3 Still no non-Western fonts in smallest charsize" at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=340322 :
"In order to keep the size of the JAR file down, the developers of Opera Mini have chosen NOT to include any non-Western character in their custom, (in most MIDlet manager) edge-smoothed Small font set. Only a rectangle will be displayed upon encountering characters like this. This is pretty much similar to how Thunderhawk, the famous (IMHO, Opera Mini is far more recommended), albeit, for long not updated Windows Mobile Web browser did: it also uses a custom fontset and it also refuses to render anything non-Western.
This means you MUST use at least the Medium font size on your handset (because it uses the native charset of the device and not that of Opera Mini), should you want to read pages using the non-Western alphabet."
The OM folks have announced they will NOT implement non-Western chars to keep the JAR size down.

Oh, maybe i wasn't clear enough: i can see the letter, but the area around it (it's bounding rectangle) is not transparent, i attached a picture of what i mean (it's not from the device, when i try to take a photo the problem is not visible in the picture)

I noticed that i had that problem with the Esmertec Jbed manager, Tao Intent shows small fonts just fine without gray boxes.
Tao font is also much more clear to read.

Damn ! I don't like Tao 'cause it doesn't support fullscreen, and doesn't exit after i exit opera mini called from command line...

Strange, no such problems with me (Jbed).

Also, I downloaded an original verson of Opera Mini recently as I lost my Russian copy.
Oddly, my Russian version allows me to open and switch between two windows or three.

I know this is an old thread, but i want to bring closure: The latest Opera Mini 4.1 beta doesn't have this problem. So i was right, there was something wrong. Now the small fonts look GREAT !

Java issues (Opera Mini)

Hi all. I would like to ask 2 things regarding OM:
1. Can I get the font size much larger than is its maximum(I have it adjusted as very large, but is still very small)
2. I can't select texts in input dialogs. On my Himalaya with Cloudyfa Esmertec emulator it is possible(different version?). I want to copy links sometimes or delete parts of the text.
Some ideas? Thanks
uh oh, i just realized something. with the VGA screen on the Touch Pro, does that mean Opera Mini does not let you zoom in and out? Is that why the font size is a problem?
Are you viewing the full page zoomed out with font set to large or zoomed in? Zoomed in I have small text set and everything is large and the right size.
My problem's are with Java (thread title?) I cannot load certain pages due to java issues which is enabled and working... Some forums and Hotmail to name a few.
Any updates or fixes we can apply? (found this thread from searching, going to sift through some more for an answer if not...)

1. I'm also interested. Same as you (small fonts on zoom in mode)
2. You cannot copy/paste by holding BUT you can copy via CTRL+C and paste via CTRL+V (as on your PC) either with virtual keyboard or hardware one.
CTRL+A for select all.

Ctrl+A isn't also working. Just Ctrl+Arrow or Ctrl+Shift+Arrows
Ah, you're right. But atleast copy/paste work fine. You can try to select the whole text from inputs with double tap
For large fonts do not use the generic version. Try this version here. From your phone use opera mobile and go to http://mini.opera.com/beta/ Then click the link that says "If this version fails..." and download the first version with multiple certificates.
I originally installed the generic version and the text was unreadable. With the above version everything is nice and big now.

How can I get correct CSS font to render in Opera Mobile 9.5?

I have done extensive searching here and on google and cannot find this answer. I hope somebody here has a clue how to accomplish this.
I want Opera Mobile to render the correct font as defined in the website author's CSS when I view a web page. I have found information on how to install Opera fonts, and I've gotten this to work, but only for the Generic Font Family settings.
Here is what is happening...
1. Using Opera 9.5, build 15613 on Raphael (Sprint Touch Pro) but I don't think hardware matters in this problem.
2. Installed Microsoft's "web fonts" to \Windows AND \Windows\Fonts
3. When installed to \Windows, WM6.1 recognizes new fonts. If I go into Word, for example, I see all the fonts (Arial, Times New Roman, Georgia, Verdana, etc.)
4. When I go into Opera, I can go into the opera:config and change the "CSS Generic Font Family" and "Fonts" settings to get it to use an alternate font. As an example, I installed Consolas from Vista because it looks better than Courier New and when I changed monospace and Form.Text to Consolas, it worked perfectly. Note: this only worked after making a copy of all the fonts into the \Windows\Fonts folder, so that is where Opera looks, apparently.
5. When I go to a website that I KNOW uses Georgia as its primary font (can verify on desktop browser), the entire site is rendered still as Tahoma. This is very easy to spot because Georgia is a very different looking font than Tahoma.
6. When I go into a text field on this site, it uses Consolas instead of Courier New, as expected, because the site does not specify a font for textboxes. But this verifies that Opera is seeing the alternate fonts, just choosing not to use them when rendering the sites.
Is it possible to get Opera to load the font specified in the author's CSS file? If so, how?
What else I've tried:
1. "Author Display Mode" and "User Display Mode" - disabling User Fonts and Colors and User CSS in BOTH spots.
2. Soft reset

Font problem on WM Smartphone

Hi!
I've run into a problem regarding some of the system fonts on my device.
It looks like some system font has been replaced by some sort of digital looking font since all of a sudden some numbers in settings dialogs are now displayed as 7-seg numbers.
I guees it related to some app i've installed but since i've installed a huge amount of apps over the past days i not too eager to start backtracking and uninstalling.
Also i've installed Esmertec Jbed since the built in Sun Java is just crap. But in all java apps i run like opera mini the font is really bad. Looks like some thin upscaled low res font. I'ts readable but it looks like crap.
I'm not a win mo newbe but i haven't dealt with fonts on a smartphone before
Any suggestions on how to proceed with fixing these problems?

Dropdown Menus like on iPhone with Opera

Hi!
I'm really satisfied with my HD2 except for 2 things:
1. It doesn't play flash as promised right away (luckily I found the fixOperaFlash in this Forum)
2. When you have large dropdown menus, they are a real pain in the ass to use. Especially the large ones, which are bigger than the screen - e.g. if you are trying to select a brand name from a used car search site. It always takes me several tries before I get to move the menu bar after the dropdown menu appeared. It always scrolls around or the context menu appears.
Is there any possibility to get an easy to scroll dropdown menu like on the iPhone or the G2 Google Phone? I think this is somehow an Opera related problem, not exactly one of the HD2. But on the other hand, on other windows mobile phones you have a stylus, which makes it easier to move the scroll bar. With the HD2 you have not stylus, just the real nice capacitive display. Therefore I think there is a strong need to have flick scrolling drop down menu in Opera on the HD2. Can anybody help please? Thanx in advance.
It is excellent in iPhone for true.
However, it is not possible at the moment in HD2
It is because of the limitations in native windows OS I believe.

The drop down menus in Skyfire are much better, so it's really an Opera limitation.
Do you tested new version of Opera Mobile 10 beta 2?
Still limited?

Actually he is referring to the dropdown menus within websites in browser.
I donno if you mean the same.
In iphone, the smaller dialog box like selecting language in a website, are different & easy to select as shown below (captured from my iphone 3GS)
It's a limitation of Opera.
Try another browser.

Which browser you are trying about?
Skyfire?
It still needs to use the scroll bar and NOT scrolling inside data in menu.
Any other browser?

While the Iphone's method is indeed good it's far from optimal as I like to see all of the options at the same time, which is why I find skyfire's implementation to be the best.

BTW, have you browsed with iphone? or are you comparing photos\videos?
It is very easy to scroll with iphone that you don't regret for not showing the more items in the list.
Iam using both and i FEEL the iphone's one is better in this area.
Personal opinions may differ though
Just checked with Opera Mobile 10 Beta2.
The scrolling in drop down menu works well within the popped up list.
Excellent.

[APK][Tweaks & Mods] Opera Mini 6.5/7.5 skin mod

I'm a relatively new user of Android but my modding heritage comes from the Nokia N900, and that had carried over into modding my HD2.
The first thing I noticed about using Opera Mini was the obscene amount of screen space the app uses, so I decided to find out if this could be adjusted/changed.
I have created modified versions of Opera Mini 6.5 and 7.5, they install separately from any existing versions so your currrent one won't be affected, they also use the white logo from Opera Mini Next. The qvga/hvga tag states the size of the resources used - on a display like the HD2 the hvga set is comfortable and finger friendly, while the qvga set uses less screen space and still gets the job done.
Edit: Only English region resource files have been edited - so this will not work if you select a different language.
If needed I will post a tutorial on how to mod your own version.
It cool,
Downloading now.
Thanks man

To answer any further questions i receive about how to alter the resources of Opera Mini, I'd better explain how it works and what you can do.
Opera Mini does not contain the skin and layout in the apk file itself, but downloads them directly from opera during the first start of the program.
This was a relatively simple mod using EasyApkDisassembler, changing lines in operamini.apk\assets\resources, resources-en and resources-en-gb.
I copied the lines for qvga and hvga into the vga and svga lines, this forces operamini to download the skin and resources required for a device with a smaller resolution, therefore the skin etc are smaller.
Aside from that i changed the install path of the app in AndroidManifest.xml, the name of the app in \res\values\strings.xml, and replaced the icons in \res.
opera
that was cool man.
May i ask, is it possible to change the color of the skin when it is downloaded? Where is the downloaded skin located? Thanks man
why I cannot install your opera mini?
Rotation crash
Opera mini 7.5 mod of yours crash on changing screen orientation. Either I keep my device forced to stay in one particular orientation or kill the app from the task switcher- change orientation- re open opera (so that it loads the pages from the cache). That's the only workaround to the crash. Changing orientation while the app is running leads to full reset of cache (hence the next time I open opera, the pages already loaded before won't show up from the cache). So killing app from outside and changing orientation is absolutely necessary. (this workaround only works which the pages have loaded fully... Not partially). So it's necessary to wait for all the tabs to load in order to change orientation using my way.
Please fix this as now I can't go back to normal looking opera. Your mod looks best and is most user friendly. My phone has 960x540 resolution. 4 inch size. Using the hvga version.
