How can I get correct CSS font to render in Opera Mobile 9.5? - General Topics

I have done extensive searching here and on google and cannot find this answer. I hope somebody here has a clue how to accomplish this.
I want Opera Mobile to render the correct font as defined in the website author's CSS when I view a web page. I have found information on how to install Opera fonts, and I've gotten this to work, but only for the Generic Font Family settings.
Here is what is happening...
1. Using Opera 9.5, build 15613 on Raphael (Sprint Touch Pro) but I don't think hardware matters in this problem.
2. Installed Microsoft's "web fonts" to \Windows AND \Windows\Fonts
3. When installed to \Windows, WM6.1 recognizes new fonts. If I go into Word, for example, I see all the fonts (Arial, Times New Roman, Georgia, Verdana, etc.)
4. When I go into Opera, I can go into the opera:config and change the "CSS Generic Font Family" and "Fonts" settings to get it to use an alternate font. As an example, I installed Consolas from Vista because it looks better than Courier New and when I changed monospace and Form.Text to Consolas, it worked perfectly. Note: this only worked after making a copy of all the fonts into the \Windows\Fonts folder, so that is where Opera looks, apparently.
5. When I go to a website that I KNOW uses Georgia as its primary font (can verify on desktop browser), the entire site is rendered still as Tahoma. This is very easy to spot because Georgia is a very different looking font than Tahoma.
6. When I go into a text field on this site, it uses Consolas instead of Courier New, as expected, because the site does not specify a font for textboxes. But this verifies that Opera is seeing the alternate fonts, just choosing not to use them when rendering the sites.
Is it possible to get Opera to load the font specified in the author's CSS file? If so, how?
What else I've tried:
1. "Author Display Mode" and "User Display Mode" - disabling User Fonts and Colors and User CSS in BOTH spots.
2. Soft reset

Today 'TSK' files can they be manipulated?

Today screen files appear to have the extension .TSK can you please tell me which folder/file these are stored in and can any file be made into a TSK type file? If so how does one go about it? Also I am not sure how you find these files and/or how can you change the extension of them.
Also what is the difference between the today screen and wallpaper
Also the explorer option only appears to search the 'My Documents' folder does anyone know of a good equivalent tool either as freeware or for purchase.
Thanks in advance John.
Hi
The "theme" files (*.tsk) are stored in \windows\ directory.
TSK consists of such things as:
color scheme for Start menu, bottom bar and application windows.
background picture (today screen background)
start menu style / picture etc
TSK files can be created by various tools (including some outdated one from microsoft)
The option "use this picture as background" lets you override default background (by TSK) with the one you provide.
Thanks but I think its because you can't see the extension, plus as I mentioned the search facilities are crap. You can't search on '*.TSK' for example. I think that is why i asked for an example of a good replacement.
What is the difference between the today screen and Wallpaper. Also are you aware of what tools can create them?
Thanks again John.
Hi again.
You should use your PC to access system files on your PDA.
That gives you faster browsing, file extension view and many more.
Mobile file explorer and PDA functionality in general are designed to be simple for task-oriented working.
Enough of romantic crap
Don't mix "today screen" with "theme" and "wallpaper".
Today screen is a PDA equivalent of PC Windows's desktop.
Theme (in TSK files) is a... well... graphical theme for today screen.
Wallpaper is a picture that's behind anything else on today screen.
Most themes have wallpapers in them. But you can change wallpapers manually (choose bitmap files from memory or use the theme's default wallpaper)
Isn't that simple ?
I don't know any good software to create themes.
In case of making wallpaper...
Just make a bitmap in some standard format (BMP JPG GIF) with resolution that matches your device's display (320x240 in most cases).
You can do that even with windows paintbrush
Have fun.
cetuner is a good way to make themes actually on the pocket pc, which is relatively rare. Most is pc based. But it's not quite as complete as some pc based softare, mainly in manipulating the wallpaper. But i don't use wallpaper, so no issue to me.
Microsoft's free theme maker is a perfectly good place to start. Move on when you reach its limitations.

Opera mini small fonts poorly implemented

Hi !
I noticed a while ago that the small fonts in Opera Mini (latest 3 version - non beta, and all the 4 betas) have a rectangle around them which doesn't match the background... It's like the letter background is not completely transparent (it darkens the area around a letter). If you can't see this, try looking at the screen at an angle. Note: This only happens with SMALL fonts.
Is this an Opera Mini prolem or a JVM problem (i'm not sure who draws the font...) ?
Actually i could have sent this as PM to Menneisyys, but i thought maybe i start some talk...
The reason i'm asking this is because it's the last issue i have with Opera Mini, and maybe i should look for another JVM (useless if Opera draws the fonts and not the JVM)...
Thanks!
See section "6.3 Still no non-Western fonts in smallest charsize" at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=340322 :
"In order to keep the size of the JAR file down, the developers of Opera Mini have chosen NOT to include any non-Western character in their custom, (in most MIDlet manager) edge-smoothed Small font set. Only a rectangle will be displayed upon encountering characters like this. This is pretty much similar to how Thunderhawk, the famous (IMHO, Opera Mini is far more recommended), albeit, for long not updated Windows Mobile Web browser did: it also uses a custom fontset and it also refuses to render anything non-Western.
This means you MUST use at least the Medium font size on your handset (because it uses the native charset of the device and not that of Opera Mini), should you want to read pages using the non-Western alphabet."
The OM folks have announced they will NOT implement non-Western chars to keep the JAR size down.
Oh, maybe i wasn't clear enough: i can see the letter, but the area around it (it's bounding rectangle) is not transparent, i attached a picture of what i mean (it's not from the device, when i try to take a photo the problem is not visible in the picture)
I noticed that i had that problem with the Esmertec Jbed manager, Tao Intent shows small fonts just fine without gray boxes.
Tao font is also much more clear to read.
Damn ! I don't like Tao 'cause it doesn't support fullscreen, and doesn't exit after i exit opera mini called from command line...

Strange, no such problems with me (Jbed).
Also, I downloaded an original verson of Opera Mini recently as I lost my Russian copy.
Oddly, my Russian version allows me to open and switch between two windows or three.
I know this is an old thread, but i want to bring closure: The latest Opera Mini 4.1 beta doesn't have this problem. So i was right, there was something wrong. Now the small fonts look GREAT !

Java issues (Opera Mini)

Hi all. I would like to ask 2 things regarding OM:
1. Can I get the font size much larger than is its maximum(I have it adjusted as very large, but is still very small)
2. I can't select texts in input dialogs. On my Himalaya with Cloudyfa Esmertec emulator it is possible(different version?). I want to copy links sometimes or delete parts of the text.
Some ideas? Thanks
uh oh, i just realized something. with the VGA screen on the Touch Pro, does that mean Opera Mini does not let you zoom in and out? Is that why the font size is a problem?
Are you viewing the full page zoomed out with font set to large or zoomed in? Zoomed in I have small text set and everything is large and the right size.
My problem's are with Java (thread title?) I cannot load certain pages due to java issues which is enabled and working... Some forums and Hotmail to name a few.
Any updates or fixes we can apply? (found this thread from searching, going to sift through some more for an answer if not...)

1. I'm also interested. Same as you (small fonts on zoom in mode)
2. You cannot copy/paste by holding BUT you can copy via CTRL+C and paste via CTRL+V (as on your PC) either with virtual keyboard or hardware one.
CTRL+A for select all.

Ctrl+A isn't also working. Just Ctrl+Arrow or Ctrl+Shift+Arrows
Ah, you're right. But atleast copy/paste work fine. You can try to select the whole text from inputs with double tap
For large fonts do not use the generic version. Try this version here. From your phone use opera mobile and go to http://mini.opera.com/beta/ Then click the link that says "If this version fails..." and download the first version with multiple certificates.
I originally installed the generic version and the text was unreadable. With the above version everything is nice and big now.

simply reading japanese

I know there are lotsa fun cabs and whatnot out there for enabling japanese support but i thought i should add this just to get the knowledge out there. I already had a japanese input method and all the cabs for japanese usually screwed up my H/W keyboard in some way, changed font sizes, and displayed the calender, alarm, etc in japanese (which i didn't want).
This method is simply to add japanese character support. (you will need a registry editor)
1. Place the font inside the windows\Fonts folder (I'm using msgothic)
2. go to [HKLM/System/GDI] and create a new value called FontLinkMethods with type DWORD and set the value to 1.
3. go to [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\FontLink\SystemLink]
here there should be a value called Tahoma with value:
\windows\tahoma.ttf, Tahoma
we will append this value with:
;\windows\Fonts\MSGOTHIC.TTF, MS UI Gothic
(if you want to use other fonts such as meiryo or whatnot, you will need to adjust the name properly. I'm not sure but the i think the name follow the file name has to be the name given in the font file. If you look at meiryo, the given font name is in katakana which could be troublesome to input)
in the end, we'll have the value:
Tahoma=\windows\tahoma.ttf, Tahoma;\windows\Fonts\MSGOTHIC.TTF, MS UI Gothic
i also added that last chunk (with the msgothic) to all the other values i had inside SystemLink since i wasn't sure which fonts are used when.
the fontlinkmethods value enables font linking. by tacking on a font to the given, we provide an alternative. Whenever WM attempts to read a character and can't, instead of spitting out the square, it now falls back to the linked font. atleast, this is my understanding.
this works great for me so far. opera and sms can display japanese now. haven't checked emails.
if my logic follows correctly, you can throw on more fonts using the same method and appending each value and they should work. haven't tested it tho.
enjoy

Change font size in Opera 10 Mobile text input box?

Does anyone know how to change the size of the text in Opera Mobile 10's text input box... that opens when entering stuff into a web form? I've played with the minimum font size under user prefs and the input font sizes under fonts, but I have not found anything that changes the size of the text as I'm typing it into a form... just like this one! Hope that makes sense!
Any help would be appreciated!
Moved as not software release.
The best place to get an answer on this is in Opera Mobile Official Thread
Have a look on my signature.
Good luck,
