[APK][Tweaks & Mods] Opera Mini 6.5/7.5 skin mod - Android Software/Hacking General [Developers Only]

I'm a relatively new user of Android but my modding heritage comes from the Nokia N900, and that had carried over into modding my HD2.
The first thing I noticed about using Opera Mini was the obscene amount of screen space the app uses, so I decided to find out if this could be adjusted/changed.
I have created modified versions of Opera Mini 6.5 and 7.5, they install separately from any existing versions so your currrent one won't be affected, they also use the white logo from Opera Mini Next. The qvga/hvga tag states the size of the resources used - on a display like the HD2 the hvga set is comfortable and finger friendly, while the qvga set uses less screen space and still gets the job done.
Edit: Only English region resource files have been edited - so this will not work if you select a different language.
If needed I will post a tutorial on how to mod your own version.

It cool,
Downloading now.
Thanks man

To answer any further questions i receive about how to alter the resources of Opera Mini, I'd better explain how it works and what you can do.
Opera Mini does not contain the skin and layout in the apk file itself, but downloads them directly from opera during the first start of the program.
This was a relatively simple mod using EasyApkDisassembler, changing lines in operamini.apk\assets\resources, resources-en and resources-en-gb.
I copied the lines for qvga and hvga into the vga and svga lines, this forces operamini to download the skin and resources required for a device with a smaller resolution, therefore the skin etc are smaller.
Aside from that i changed the install path of the app in AndroidManifest.xml, the name of the app in \res\values\strings.xml, and replaced the icons in \res.

opera
that was cool man.
May i ask, is it possible to change the color of the skin when it is downloaded? Where is the downloaded skin located? Thanks man

why I cannot install your opera mini?

Rotation crash
Opera mini 7.5 mod of yours crash on changing screen orientation. Either I keep my device forced to stay in one particular orientation or kill the app from the task switcher- change orientation- re open opera (so that it loads the pages from the cache). That's the only workaround to the crash. Changing orientation while the app is running leads to full reset of cache (hence the next time I open opera, the pages already loaded before won't show up from the cache). So killing app from outside and changing orientation is absolutely necessary. (this workaround only works which the pages have loaded fully... Not partially). So it's necessary to wait for all the tabs to load in order to change orientation using my way.
Please fix this as now I can't go back to normal looking opera. Your mod looks best and is most user friendly. My phone has 960x540 resolution. 4 inch size. Using the hvga version.

I found no difference at all. Do something. Change its dpi or something, yo!

Opera mini small fonts poorly implemented

Hi !
I noticed a while ago that the small fonts in Opera Mini (latest 3 version - non beta, and all the 4 betas) have a rectangle around them which doesn't match the background... It's like the letter background is not completely transparent (it darkens the area around a letter). If you can't see this, try looking at the screen at an angle. Note: This only happens with SMALL fonts.
Is this an Opera Mini prolem or a JVM problem (i'm not sure who draws the font...) ?
Actually i could have sent this as PM to Menneisyys, but i thought maybe i start some talk...
The reason i'm asking this is because it's the last issue i have with Opera Mini, and maybe i should look for another JVM (useless if Opera draws the fonts and not the JVM)...
Thanks!
See section "6.3 Still no non-Western fonts in smallest charsize" at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=340322 :
"In order to keep the size of the JAR file down, the developers of Opera Mini have chosen NOT to include any non-Western character in their custom, (in most MIDlet manager) edge-smoothed Small font set. Only a rectangle will be displayed upon encountering characters like this. This is pretty much similar to how Thunderhawk, the famous (IMHO, Opera Mini is far more recommended), albeit, for long not updated Windows Mobile Web browser did: it also uses a custom fontset and it also refuses to render anything non-Western.
This means you MUST use at least the Medium font size on your handset (because it uses the native charset of the device and not that of Opera Mini), should you want to read pages using the non-Western alphabet."
The OM folks have announced they will NOT implement non-Western chars to keep the JAR size down.
Oh, maybe i wasn't clear enough: i can see the letter, but the area around it (it's bounding rectangle) is not transparent, i attached a picture of what i mean (it's not from the device, when i try to take a photo the problem is not visible in the picture)
I noticed that i had that problem with the Esmertec Jbed manager, Tao Intent shows small fonts just fine without gray boxes.
Tao font is also much more clear to read.
Damn ! I don't like Tao 'cause it doesn't support fullscreen, and doesn't exit after i exit opera mini called from command line...

Strange, no such problems with me (Jbed).
Also, I downloaded an original verson of Opera Mini recently as I lost my Russian copy.
Oddly, my Russian version allows me to open and switch between two windows or three.
I know this is an old thread, but i want to bring closure: The latest Opera Mini 4.1 beta doesn't have this problem. So i was right, there was something wrong. Now the small fonts look GREAT !

Customizing X7510 "Big" HTC Home

I have been looking for some tools for customizing HTC Home, which comes from Athena X7510 official ROM. You can find it in some cooked roms for X7500/x7501 as well, but this "big" version of Home plugin was first introduced in X7510, I think.
Well known HHC could be used for this, but there is no proper grafic files for this version of Home plugin. The files should be of proper size, as we are talking about VGA and biger version then the one from other phones.
I have prepared one small set of files for myself and am posting them here, so others can use them. Maybe others could do the same so we could bulild a set of graffics to be able to change our HTC HP.
The background is based on Poorlyduck's Background (thanks to Poorlyduck) and the clock is made out of Segoa Bold Gray Shaded delivered with HHC (thanks to emunutz).
I have attached my screen and grafics which can be used in HHC or copied directly to the folder where your HTC Home is installed (by default in Windows folder).
Edit:
All of you who can contribute with their work, please feel free and join here.
Edit2:
Attached Files contain HTC Dimond clock described in my post #6.
Does this mean if I copy and paste the files you provided I could make it look exactly as the screen shot? To which folder exactly? Is it as easy as selecting it off the today screen settings?
How did you show the time and Main Memory at the top bar together?
What is HHC?
Is there a way to change the color to all black?
How come you also have TABS on the top part? Is that part of the files you provided? How can I have those TABS?
Are you using Real VGA? If YES, will your files work with Real VGA at 96 dpi or do we have to use it at 196 dpi?
Sorry for the numerous questions...

My screen is build with some special soft which I use in all my phones.
On top bar i use WKTask, gprs connection monitor and pBar.
The last one is showing time and memory in right top corner. It's main perpouse is more or les the same as WKTask but I like them both. WKTask is bestin closing apps but pBar gives you some other things like showing time and memory.
HTC Home is standard Today plugin. It does not give you those upper tabs. I use UltimateLounch (UL) for it. You can build tabs with normal icons/links to apps on your Athena, but also you can use Today plugins as tabs or combunation of Today plugins and sections with normal icons. The best is that you can use gestures to change from one tab to the other and it can show you a cube efect switching to the oter tab.
Hope this helps.
Edit:
All of this should work in realvga. I did not test it in this Athena, but the same config have used in my old x7500 with realvga 128dpi and it was fine. Now have decided that I prefer finger touch then density, so did not install realvga on my new x7510.
HHC is HTC Home Customizer by emunutz.
Thank you for clarifying everything. I'm going to check out Ultimate Launcher.
I also found pBar 1.5. Is this the version you are using?

HTC Dimond style clock
I have resized HTC Dimond clock made originaly by Ipaso.
It looks nice on HTC (black) them and Poorlyduck's backround. HTC theme was moded a little. As always I use UL as main organizer of my screen.
All files are for portrait and landscape.
Edit:
I have updated my attached file in my post #1. HTC Dimond by Ipaso is now fixed to solve the problem of small "0" in landscape and 12 hours type clock. Bug found by robjhellis (thanks).

Color Icons for BIG HTC Home
I have been running AP4 since it was released and am very pleased with the great work done by the AP team. However, I was looking to add a bit of color to the HTC home and I have created a set of icons to do so.
If you like....please enjoy.

Customizing "Big" HTC Home
Some time ago, I have opened a thread for customizing "Big" HTC Home plugin for Athena. The thread is here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=2506158&postcount=1.
It would be nice if people could have all efforts for this subject in one place.
BTW, nice done.

Tadeuz, I've copied your Diamond Diamond Clock on to my 7510 and in landscape the first digit is about half ther siz of the other three. In portrait they are all tye same size. Any thoughts on why this might have happened?
Also, any chance to give us a run down on the settings for Ultimate Launcher to get the top selection bar. Just cannot work it out.
Very many thanks.

I have no idea, what happened. You mean all digits on first place are smaller then the other 3 places, no matter what the actuall digit is at the momment?
If so then it means there is some problem with HTC Home Plugin. Are you sure, you are using the same version of Home Plugin as mine. Are you on X7510 or the older Advantage? If so then you could have some older "small" version of Home plugin.
Try to compare your screen with mine. In landscape you should have the clock on left side and messages infro on right side, not under the clock, as it is in other versions of Home plugin.
Talking about UL, there is good source of info at this place: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=2134341&postcount=1
I could give you mine setup file but I use a lot of specific icons and links, as well as some today plugins, which you could not have on your device. I have noticed that UL could hang up if you load a setup file with links to non-existing apps or today plugins. This would mean a hard reset if you do not have some special recovery software on your device and some additional knowledge, how to get out of such situation.
before you start to fiedle with UL config make a backup of working config (UltimateLounch.ini file). In case you get stucked, you can go into recovery state and return to this working config. Of cource backed-up file should by on your device, not on your PC.
Generaly, before you start to add a today plugin to UL config, you have to deactivate it in Today setup, so it is inactive. Then you can add it to some tab in UL setup.
In may case, my Today screen have only two active plugins, UL and callendar (as this is not working in UL). The rest plugins I have on particular tabs in UL. You also can set one tab as a default one, so it is always shown when the system starts.
You can use icons taken from the app, or you can prepare or use special icons for each app link (when preparing tab for app links).
Hope this helps.
Tadeusz you have given me a lot to digest. Much of it will need to wait until the weekend as the week is going to be busy at work. Thank you for your input.
Re the 1st digit. I can now report that it is only the zero that is the small size. When the 1st digit changes to a one then everything is of uniform size. I am running in 12 hour mode whereas I see your image is showing a 24 hour version. I'm, therefore, seeing the zero more often than you would see. Of course I never see a two in 1st place using the 12 hour clock. Other than that the clock and message set up is the same as yours. My device is the x7510 and I have applied auswims' color icons (post #9). Thanks for any further thoughts you may have.
I've attached a screenprint showing the small zero.

Anyone working on support for GIF/APNG?

Just wondering what would me necessary to run it as a wallpaper?
What I would do is convert it, u might be able to use mspaint
For mspaint just open file and SaveAs .jpeg
And you probably can use media-convert.com or mediaconvert.net those are the right urls but just google 'media convert' and it should be one of the first two.
using that site you should be able to convert ur image from your phone

Woosh.....right over your head....
Don't want to covert...the idea is to have an animated wallpaper
I have also wondered about this question as themes could be much more highly animated if the device supported .apng For those of you who don't know .apng stands for "Animated PNG" files similar to the function of .gifs but... they are about 10X the quality [esp for transparency] , 1 major drawback tho is the size of the file, still would be awesome to have animated program icons and such eh... or a little dude with a animated talk bubble for waiting voicemail, and things like that. I could really do some wicked stuff if this was possible. Alas I'm just a graphics dude.... I have no knowleage of code or implimentation of things of this nature.... :'( For a code dude first place to look for information would be one of the major browsers that support this and see how or what files or dlls or whatever were added to impliment.
Yeah, I've had this idea myself, but I have no idea if it's even possible... Not without major coding to the source. I've never been good at coding, so I'm not sure. I hope someone could do this.
Since the browser doesn't even supposed animated gifs it would take some work. Also the battery drain would be pretty bad.

The upcoming update(s) will allow for that though.... Straight from the development board:
New features
Updated WebKit browser core, synced with Nov 2008 WebKit version.
Support for new, optimized JavaScript engine (SquirrelFish).
Copy / paste is enabled in the browser. To copy with touch, press and hold the shift key and select the text. Releasing the shift key or ending the touch drag copies the text. To copy with the trackball, press and hold the shift key, move the cursor to the selection start, click the trackball, and move the trackball to the extend the selection. Releasing the shift key, or clicking the trackball a second time, copies the text.
Find is enabled in the browser. To find text, choose it from the menu and type the text to find.
Drawing has been sped up substantially by supporting partial content invalidates and partial screen invalidates. Pages with animations are 5x faster.
what about flash wallpapers when flash is released? or ever flash themes?
on my old LG Viewty (seriously the worst phone ever) people found out you could make whole themes in flash.
because you could pretty much do whatever the **** you wanted, some of the themes got absolutly amazing.
just wondering if something similar could be implimented for the G1? obviously when (and if ) flash gets released.
I'm not sure the updates imply GIF animations does it?
It sounded like it was talking about applications could redraw quicker by damaging only certain areas for redraws instead of damaging the whole screen. While this probably does mean GIF animations in the browser will be faster, I don't think it implies the homepage background will animate. Just that if it had "some" way to animate it would be faster than todays driver would support.
But I'm just speculating and have no clue
I wonder if an easy way to get SIMPLE changes would be to have a background program just change the desktop picture every few/seconds or minutes? Like KDE and GNOME have a way for background apps like a globe that change the desktop background every few minutes.
I just want to see ani gif support so i can see what I'm missing in all my friends MMS messages. As it is, I see the first pix of the ani and nothing else so their MMS does not have the same effect. I have to save to SD Card, copy to my PC, then open the gif to see what is so funny. I'm hoping the mythical cupcake update fixes that, plus so many other bugs in the phone.

Tips for opera mini on Fuze: bigger font and no more annoying connection request.

Hi all, this is first time i post, just want to give back to XDA , anyway, my english is not very good, lets start the topic...here's how i do..
use any regedit goto
1. "HKLM\software\apps\esmertec java\properties"
delete key "com.sun.midp.io.http.proxy" --->now you have speed and even use wifi connection.
2. "HKLM\software\apps\esmertec java\device info\java font"
edit the "size large" key to "30" --->now you've bigger font size in extra large setting.
3. install "JRebeiro_EsmertecJbed.cab" than uninstall it. ---> i accidentally found this work. now i've the "yes, don't ask me again" option for the permission. if you know what i mean...
4. go mini.opera.com download the "Multiple certificates" version and install.
5. change font setting to extra larger.
hope this help, and sorry for the bad english.
ps. try upload the "JRebeiro_EsmertecJbed.cab" but got Upload of file failed, so, just google it, should be 2.5mb

In Opera, I'm using Extra Large font. I wouldn't mind trying something even a bit larger.
But, In HKLM\software\apps\esmertec java the only subfolder I have is Properties. Nothing with Device Info and nothing about java font anywhere.
Did you have to build this or was it there?
I'm using version 3.1
i can confirm that the font edit works, it definately is much easier to use now... dont know why u dont have that folder, maybe try to uninstall and reinstall? thank you very much for this info!
Which version of esmertec jbed are you guys using?
Is the java font a dword?
Can someone post that java font key part of the registry so I can try to add it?
Once that's set, what font size do you set inside opera mini? Large or Extra Large?
Nevermind, I tried the version of jbed here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=439989
and I see the keys now.
I'll play around a bit more and check this version out

The java in the link I posted above is nice.
Fonts are much bigger, even without the hack posted in this thread.
I do now have those keys too, so it must have been that jbed 3.1 that didn't make those keys.
mine is from the at&t ship rom. don't know what version is it.

No, this is string value
> Once that's set, what font size do you set inside opera mini? Large or Extra Large?
You have three steps in Opera and in the settings, but the scales aren't the same so large in settings means very large in Opera...
After tthe registry edit the font size is still the same for me...
For the font...
I have installed VGA_Esmertec_Jbed_20080912.5.1.cab(try to google for it) this way:
- Synchronize your Operamini
- delete the Windows\Appdb folder(I am not sure if a copy for backup and restoration later works).
- install the cab
- download Operamini again(maybe Appdb folder restoration should be enough)
- synchronize to restore your bookmarks

Start Menu - 4/5 Items Wide

Update 27/11/2009:
I have now made a multi-device version here. It adds landscape support and the text is slightly larger to accommodate devices with smaller screens which I think looks better on the hd2 too.
Old version:
Hi All,
I wasnt very impressed with other 4-wide and 5-wide options, so I just modified the .cpr from my hd2 myself.
This doesnt touch the registry, so wont be much use for non-stock ROMs and other devices unless you edit it yourself:
HKLM\Security\Shell\StartMenu\CustomGridForm = "StartMenuCust"
You will need to soft reset after installing.
Enjoy!
Could you please post some screenshots?
No problem, screenshots added to post 1.
My CustomGridForm is already =StartMenuCust. Should your cabs work on my case (original rom)?
Other question: Did you get your start menu to work on landscape? I've seen some threads about this but I would like to know where to change this on the reg myself. Some apps might have unstable behavior when adding apps to the white list.
Thanks!
If you are already StartMenuCust it should work - I think its only when custom roms start coming out that will change.
I should have mentioned - This is just for portrait. You could change the landscape yourself as it is fairly trivial. Look in \Windows for:
StartMenuCust_480x800.cpr = Portrait
StartMenuCust_800x480.cpr = Landscape
Edit these in notepad (it is just xml). You have to change the row count to 4 and change the relative size of the images, text etc.
Just tried this out .... very effective thanks!!
just a little point, after the install, the black screen offers a Restart button or cancel; on my stock HD2 neither worked, it had frozen. A soft reset got it going again, with a 5-column display
any chance of gettin them in a straght line instead of honeycomb?>
Editing seems to be simple enough. The problem is that my start menu doesn't rotate automatically. I could use gyrator to make it work but I would prefer to use the whitelist or any other reg edit. I avoid using programs that have to be running in the background or tweak my Leo for me, as much as possible. If I reg edit and it doesn't work, I know what I did and can always change it back.
Any idea on how to do this?
Thanks!
pdgpereira:
This thread seems to cover the reg changes you need to make. I havent tried it though!
vinokirk:
Not a clue, sorry!
Armes:
I dont know why it crashed for you. It asks you to restart itself (presumably because it changed a system file) so its installers fault!
Thanks for the link. I had been there but with no previous success. I finally did it. I isolated the reg tweaks made by gsen cab, I think, and added some others. A soup of reg tweaks... The problem with cabs is that you never know what exactly they do. I'll be doing some reg cleaning in the next hour.
Now I will try out these 4/5 columns in landscape.
Thanks guys!

I was also wondering this... Maybe setting HexagonGrid="FALSE" in the .cpr files does the trick? Will try it out and let you know.
vdws: I wouldnt recommend touching the HexagonGrid option. Im not really sure what it is for, but if you set it FALSE your start menu wont work anymore. Well, it will, but after a long pause while it changes back to the default WM6.5 grid. You would then need to change the registry value mentioned in post 1.

by chris10234?
That looks like it will suit your needs fine. Let me know if you really want my version but i would need you to test it a few times for me!
Looks amazing cant believe i spent the last 4 days without this tweak thanks for doing it before i had to as it was my plan!
Just wish that landscape would auto-rotate on it...

I am happy to convert mine to qvga - and tried but its quite hard to judge in the emulator what it looks like. I dont have a qvga device and I cant seem to use the htc fonts in the emulator.

Thank you very much for you kind help!
If I want to change it back to original setting, is it just simply uninstall it ?
-----Note------ I had tried it, eveythings back to original by simply uninstall the cab file. Now I am using the 5 items wide, it looks smaller but more tidy than 4 items wide.
Very good and thanks.
Any chance you are going to make some landascape ones?
As i added auto-rotate with bsb-tweaks and now have 5 in portrait and landscape but landscape could much much better...
EDIT: Saw the other thread and if i go for the 5 cab there it will give me 9-wide in landscape, right?
adab: Thats right, uninstalling the .cab should restore the rom default.
chris10230: Yup, I have an updated one here which supports landscape too. For the HD2 WVGA thats 5 portrait and 9 landscape.
Cheers once again!
