Greetings
I want to save some energy on my Vox, and I'm wondering, is it possible to change (reduce) brightness of backlight on Vox, by using specific program or other trick? Original backlight is really too strong for me!
I've searched for information about it, but I've found nothing...
And if that is not possible, I want to totally turn off backlight. Without it screen is bright enought, I can clearly see everyting on it. Only in good sunny weather could be some problems with it, but I can always turn it on again. So is there any program or other trick to disable backlight?
I founded program called OldSap's OS Power, which should do this. But download page is offline! So maybe someone has got that program and want to share it?
Any solution?
Thanks to all
To decrease brightness you can use Light Toogle from this topic. It works fine with my C600 and should with Vox.
For enegry saving you can also reduce CPU clock (manual with OmapClock or automatically with Tornado PowerControl).
Unfortunately this program doesn't work on my device (it shows only white screen with some chinese "软件大" and do nothing...). Backlight works normal with this program background running...
Other solutions? Maybe this OldSap's OS Power?
It's seems to be easy thing to shut down the backlight, isn't it?
Vox has only two backlight states (excluding no backlight) - full and dimmed. You can use Tornado LowLight or Tornado Power Control to switch between dimmed and full backlight.
torrentonly, thank you very much! This is what I'm looking for!
Program runs perfect, problem solved
Once more time - thanks!
Hey guys
I have this weird problem with the LCD backlight since I upgraded to the new AT&T stock ROM (5.11.502.2 WWE)
Usually the backlight is supposed to dim down after 30sec and then turn off after the specified time set in (start/settings/system/power/advanced). Now suddenly this stopped working correctly. The screen just turns off completely after 30sec, no matter what I change the control panel settings to.
I found the registry key (HKCU/ControlPanel/Power/Display) which is set to 30 seconds so yeah, I can increase that to make the screen turn off later, but I want the dimming back!
Where is it defined *WHAT* is supposed to happen after these 30 seconds?
No one?
Am I the only one here with a stock rom? LOL
My Fuze light sensor doesn't seem to be working correctly either. It's not the same problem, though. And I'm not really sure if mine stopped working right after the new ROM or after I installed Diamond Tweak and Advanced Config.
There used to be a noticeable change in the backlighting when moving between different ambient lighting conditions but now I don't notice anything. If I cup my hand over the light sensor, the backlight stays the same whereas before it would dim a little and then brighten up again after removing my hand.
Can anyone tell me what the default registry settings for it are so I can see if either DT or AC did something?
Thanks.
AutoLight V2.5
HTC Topaz (Diamond 2) auto adjust backlight function is a good idea with a not very good implementation. It must be said to HTC excuse that the light sensor is very noisy, especially at low light conditions.
Some alternatives do exist but are not very good or are Compact Framework application (not a very good idea for background application).
AutoLight is supposed to be a better implementation for the auto adjust backlight function.
Requirements and compatibility
AutoLight was developed for HTC Topaz (Diamond 2) with WM6.1 and it critically depends on HTCSensorSDK.dll, HTCUtil.dll and on a 10 levels backlight starting from value 1.
It has been reported to work with WM6.5, on Rhodium (Touch Pro 2) and on Leo (HD2) and it might works on other HTC phones but the test is up to you. I do not think it can work on non-HTC phones.
AutoLight is a native application with a very low memory usage. On the other hand the Configurator requires Compact Framework 2 but it should be closed after the use.
The Configurator is designed for WVGA screens.
Install
Run AutoLight.cab and install in main memory (not in storage card), run AutoLight.Config.cab and install where you like, then softreset (this should also disable the native auto adjust backlight function, check for that in the Control Panel Power applet).
If you have previously installed autolight V2.x and want only upgrade to V2.4 without having your configuration reset to default use the Configurator to stop AutoLight. After that overwrite AutoLight.exe, ChangeLight.exe and AutoLightConfig.exe with the files you find inside AutoLight.zip and softreset.
Uninstall
To uninstall AutoLight use the Configurator to stop it, then use Remove Programs in Settings.
AutoLight can be also be stopped running the AutoLightStop utility.
To uninstall AutoLight Configurator use Remove Programs in Settings.
Configurator
AutoLight working depends on parameters it gets from registry. For details on parameters see AutoLight.reg.txt and AutoLigth.reg
The Configurator gives a more user friendly access to these parameters. Nevertheless, the configuration process is quite complex and should be done after thoroughly reading AutoLight.reg.txt.
The second tab of the Configurator contains a graphical representation of the calibration table used to convert light sensor to backlight values. Note that:
- the horizontal scale is not linear but goes according to square root of the light sensor value;
- the horizontal red segments represent the ranges of light sensor values assigned to every backlight level;
- the horizontal red segment whose backlight level is selected (with the control on top of the second tab) turns blue;
- the small rectangles connecting the segments are the hysteresis;
- the vertical blue line is the current light sensor value (only available when AutoLight is running);
- the horizontal blue line is the current backlight level (only available when AutoLight is running).
Freeze backlight command
When you use your phone in a rapidly changing light environment AutoLight keeps hunting the right backlight level. For example, this may happen using a GPS navigator inside a running car. The freeze backlight command solves this kind of problem by keeping the backlight level stable from the moment it is invoked.
To freeze the backlight level run ChangeLight.exe without any parameter. Using ChangeLight.exe and a hardware button mapper you can freeze the backlight level just pressing a button. From then on the backlight level remains stable until you run ChangeLight.exe again, power your phone off or change power from AC to battery or viceversa.
User offset change and increment/decrement backlight command
If you are not satisfied with the backlight level as computed by AutoLight you can add a positive or negative offset to it. The offset values, one for use when on battery and one for use when on AC power, can be entered using the Configurator.
Moreover, running ChangeLight.exe with parameter "/-" decrements backlight level by one, with parameter "/+" increments backlight level by one. The utility then adjusts current offset level accordingly. Using ChangeLight.exe and a hardware button mapper you can change backlight and offset without using the stylus.

I'm a bit confused. What exactly does this do?
How is this different than the excellent LUMOS?
i tried lumos & g-light and eventually got back to WM6 default autolight & its working pretty good.
how this app different/better than default autolight?
because its starting from level 1 not from 2?

Lumos (and G-Light) are not bad but they use Compact Framework even for the background always running process. Use a task manager to see how much memory they consume. Moreover, under stress condition (many running applications) a Compact Framework application can be forced to close.

Yes, because it starts from level 1, not 3 (at least on my Topaz is 3). Moreover, it's more configurable (if you are experienced enough to tweak the registry) and because with version 1.1 it can change backlight for different applications (details inside the zip).
Works well on WM 6.5
Cool, thanks for answering the questions. I'll try it out.
Version 1.1.1 posted.

Wold you be a bit more specific?
Does not install?
Does install but AutoLight.exe does not start?
AutoLight.exe starts but does not regulate backlight?
Thanks a lot, Great work
Exactly what i'm looking for.. I will keep this..

Hi
It installs fine, it just does not affect the backlight at all.
Regards
Great App!!!
In the list of task process, autolight used 3.70kb. (very little).
I have one question, how work the battery consumption of the program? Comparing the original autobaklight or the third level of backlight?

The program only runs when the device is active and does very little (it mostly sleep) so it adds almost nothing to battery consumption.
Consumption due to backlight of course depends on external light. AutoLight is darker than original service at low light level but brighter at very high level.
If you want to aggressively save the battery you must change the calibration curve to keep lower backlight levels. Inside the zip you find details on the calibration curve and how change it (registry tweaking and patience are required).

If you are sure that the AutoLight.exe process is running and that the original autolight service is disabled (from the control panel power applet) I must suppose that your branded device is somewhat different enough from tha standard Topaz to prevent AutoLight working (maybe some extra security settings).
Do you plan to make configurator for those who do afraid to directly edit the registry?

I really do not have enough free time to write a decent configurator and I prefer to concentrate on the core functionality (I want to remove the "flash" on power on due to sensor setup).
On the other hand the program is free (and copyright free also) so if someone wants to write a configurator...
May be off the thread, but can you tell how much its possible to change light settings in direction of brightest level?
I have CMP (ComMangerPro) running at that excellent program control my light settings according to schedules and places. It could be rather cool to give more light when I have chosen the highest level?
I am wondering if there exists an application which can easily change volume and screen backlight by a simple tap?
Well this is what im after: at night I always set my backlight to 10% and the volume very low. During daytime i set the volume at 80% and the backlight to 40%. My wish is to be able to switch between these setups fast, instead of having to access the settings etc. I guess it is some sort of profiling application, but the backlight option is a must.
Would also be nice if it had an automatic time setting.
Please share your knowledge if you know the answer to this.
Thank you.

Quick Set Backlight & sound for HTC HD2
I built one myself for my HD2. Its called Quick Set.
No guarantee it works on other HTC's.
On the HD2, pressing the leftmost button for 4 secs brings up a screen where you can select 0-25-50-75-100% sound levels and 10%-automatic-100% backlight levels.
If you want to keep a possible Long-Send.lnk already present in \Windows, please save it before and restore it after executing Quick_Set.CAB
In that case Quick Set must be launched via the start menu.
See attachments.
Have fun

Quick Set Backlight and Volume for HTC HD2 Version 1.1
Quick Set for HTC HD2 Version 1.1
Copy Quick_Set.CAB on the storage card and execute it.
It needs Microsoft .NET Compact Framework 3.5 Redistributable, possibly you must download an install it before.
After installation, pressing the leftmost button for 4 secs brings up a screen where you can select between 2 sound- and 3 backlight levels by touching c.q. the appropriate speaker and hd2 pictures.
This can be done easily, e.g. while driving and using the HD2 as navigator.
After selection, the application closes and the original screen is restored.
The first sound level is 0 (muted) and selected by touching the muted speaker picture left.
The second is determined by the setting of the top slider and selected by touching the right speaker picture
The first backlight level is dim and determined by the setting of the dark bottom slider.
It is selected by touching the dark HD2 picture left.
The second level is auto and determined by HD2's light sensor; selected by the middle HD2 picture.
The third level is bright and determined by the setting of the white middle slider;
selected by the white HD2 picture right.
While driving it is not recommended to operate the sliders.
If you want to keep a possible Long-Send.lnk already present in \Windows, please save it before and restore it after installation.
In that case Quick Set must be launched via the start menu.
Have fun

wow. thanx mate.
Will try & review it!
edit:
Just tried it and the brightness setting works flawlesly. The sound works too, but it doesnt update the sound icon in the taskbar tho :-(
If you are still developing on this, you could add 2 more buttons to it. Night & Day mode. These2 modes could be configurable...
Example: Night mode, brightness level 0 sound level 0.
Day mode, brightness level 100 sound level 100.
Cheers. Great application mate! Keep up the good work!
Thanks for the compliment.
Quick Set was developed for a number of reasons.
I was dissatisfied with the implementation of some HD2 settings.
In particular, backlight and volume; the latter also because I used VolDpad to remap the volume buttons to Up/Down so that I had less trouble using MS Reader.
Setting backlight and volume when using Tomtom navigator while driving
compromises safety.
As a hobby, I wanted to gain experience with Smart Device program development tools.
I never thougt about the speaker icon.
It only shows "muted" if both the ringer- and system volume settings are set to zero via the regular controls.
Hence, if it shows "not muted", you are not sure what this exactly means.
If you want to be sure, you have to access the controls.
My conclusion is, that quick access to the controls is preferred, and that is what Quick Set is about.
Night & Day mode does not seem practical, because in general the actual requirements for sound and brightness depend on the environment and these are often not correlating with the time of day.
E.g. in my case the ringer volume is never muted, while the system volume is mostly muted if I don't use Tomtom Navigator; brightness is set to minimum if I'm in bed, otherwise it's set to Auto or maximum if I am outdors or showing pictures.
Also then quick access to the controls is preferred.
Adding more controls is not consistent with my design goals.
I omitted the sliders in my first design.
I only added them because a friend of mine with somewhat detoriated eyesight had trouble with the minimum brightness while Auto was too bright for him; moreover it enabled me to gain more experience.
For the latter reason I may do something about the speaker icon.
Have fun,
Bert
just tried it. the screen settings work but not the sound. using tmob hd2. it would be great if it works though.
I customized a luminosity curve for my surface rt, just edit the registry keys.
Download extract and run the attached .reg file and confirm the insertion of the Keys, then reboot the system.
Alert to make a backup of the old keys if you want to restore the previous state.
This change is compatible with all windows 8 but I have tested only on the surface.
Adaptive brightness varies proportionally to the user manual brightness, I suggest to manually adjust the brightness bar to about 20%, if you place the bar at 0 the brightness will be minimal with no automatic adaptation.
Appreciated thanks
New version v2
New improved version.
Try it and tell me if it's okay.
In the zip you will find the normal version and one with more brightness in the dark
I suggest to manually adjust the brightness bar to about 25%
So you have a fix, that's great. But to what? You didn't state what the problem is. Neither did you way what you are doing differently over the default values. Why would me, or anybody else for that matter, want do download this?

In my surface the luminosity curve does not satisfy me.
The display seemed to have only three levels of brightness, setting an average value (ie on the desk in the room in the morning) adaptivity did not fit values for low-light (night) and lots of light, that is to say the brightness in the dark was not a minimum making it annoying for the view and unnecessary consumption of battery, instead with shaded light levels brightness became easily maximum, with again a waste of battery.
This forced me to move often the brightness bar manually, but now with my calibration does not touch more because it adapts automatically to any light condition.
Also the adaptation of brightness occurred after 3 seconds by the change of light, whereas now changes instantly in 0,1 seconds (100ms).
I like it a lot, just what I was looking for.
I use mostly in low light conditions my surface so it is very useful.
Just one remark: it is too sensitive so it is changing screen brightness very quickly even when I just touching the upper part of the screen and making a little shade on the light sensor...
So I think instead of 1 msec. would be better 3 msec.
Would you please and make a 3. version of the settings with 3 msec.?

You are right, 100 ms. I was in a hurry. Thanks for the fast response and update
Your v2 seems to be working fine for me. Before applying it I could really tell when my surface was adjusting the screen, after applying it the transitions seems smoother and less abrupt.
I have been looking for documentation about how all of these things really work and the closest thing i could find was this link http://superuser.com/questions/644538/customize-adaptative-brightness-in-windows-8
but they seem to be using a different registry location than what you are and different registry names
regardless your settings seem to work immediately after restarting the sensor service
