Notification Queue, fixing & cleaning HOWTO - General Topics

This is version 0.1 of a guide I am putting together about the Windows Mobile Notification Queue. I don't really know which forum to put this in, so mods feel free to move it if you feel that General is not the best place - thanks.
WARNING: Follow the advice below at your own risk! Backup your device first before trying any of this! Messing with the Notification Queue can stop Activesync and other software working permanently if you screw up, which only a hard reset can fix!!!
### Preface ###
After calendar reminders (and other notifications) stopped working again on my HTC Universal running WM5, I decided to do some research into this so-called "Notification Queue" and find out what each entry did, which were causing problems, and which ones could be safely deleted.
There is very little information out there regarding the notification queue (and a lot of misinformation), so I have gathered up what I could and hopefully this will be the only post you need to read if you are having problems with alarms/reminders/notifications/etc, or just want to do some spring cleaning to speed up your device.
The Notification Queue is present on all WM2003, WM2003SE, WM5, and WM6 devices - both PDA's as well as Pocket PC phones. I don't know about the Smartphone, I don't think MemMaid works on those devices anyway, can any Smartphone owners comment?
Its purpose is to basically run tasks and activate alarms/reminders at scheduled times, particularly when the device is in standby or low power mode.
The Notification Queue is the cause of many problems/bugs such as alarms/reminders not working, or alarms going crazy when the device is rebooted, etc. It does not cause anywhere near as many problems on WM6, but WM6 users may still benefit from this information.
### Tools you will need ###
DinarSoft MemMaid. The 15 day free trial will be enough, or you could buy it. Other software exists that will do the same thing, but this guide will focus only on MemMaid.
Also some backup software like SPB Backup!
Firstly: Install MemMaid, but don't open it just yet. Disconnect your device from your PC so that Activesync is not connected, then you should also properly close/kill ActiveSync with your task manager so that it doesn't interfere with the queue by frequently adding new repllog.exe entries (perhaps this is not required, but I think it is a good idea anyway).
Secondly: Now open MemMaid, and click on the second tab which should be the Notification Queue. This is where you need to be.
### Entries in the Notification Queue ###
Duplicates: The first thing you should do is press the "Find Duplicate" button, and remove all duplicate notifications. This is safe to do.
"Blank" entries: These appear to be blank, but when you select them, they have lots of seemingly random hex letters and numbers. These are left over from old failed ActiveSync connections, and should be deleted.
repllog.exe: These are all added by ActiveSync, and are necessary for it to work correctly. There should only be a few (like 3 or 4) entries in the queue, all of which look different from each other. You can only safely delete ONE type of them, which is the type at or near the top of the queue that looks like this: Argument: /sched /remote /h 01 October 2007 - 16:48:56. Delete any of this type that have dates/times in the past, but leave the future ones alone. And definitely leave the other repllog.exe entries alone that appear further down in the queue!
CALENDAR.EXE: Delete all of these, don't worry they will be re-added in the proper order later on. A backlog of these are what causes most problems.
\Windows\clock.exe: Same as CALENDAR.EXE - delete all of them. Also the cause of many problems. If you do find any of these, after deleting them you should then turn off all Alarms in Start->Settings->System->Clock & Alarms.
\\.\Notifications\NamedEvents\xxxxxx: The SCRIPT ones apparently relate to the flashing screen notification type for your device, but they don't seem to cause any harm and I don't know enough about them, so don't delete these.
CALNOT.EXE | \\Windows\calupd.exe | clocknot.exe: Leave these well alone, unless you have some with dates/times in the past (at or near the top in MemMaid) AND there are also others of the same type in your queue with dates/times in the future (in the middle or bottom). If this is the case, delete only the ones in the past. If in doubt, leave it alone, unless you have a backup and are feeling adventurous!
\\Windows\sddaemon.exe: This is the Smart dialer service. There should only be 1 of these entries after you cleaned the queue of duplicates earlier, so leave this alone.
There will probably be some other entries not mentioned here caused by software you have installed, leave these alone also unless you have good reason to think otherwise.
At this point if you scroll to the top of your Notification Queue, the first few entries should all have dates/times in the near future, and nothing else in the queue should have a date/time in the past. So you have cleaned your Notification Queue, and now you only have one last step to perform
### FINAL STEP (important) ###
You can now close MemMaid. Open up your favourite file explorer, the WM5 default one will do but personally I prefer Resco Explorer 2007. Navigate to the My Device\Windows\ directory. There are a LOT of files in here, so it may be a bit slow.
Now you need to execute each of the following 3 files, only once and in this order:
clocknot.exe
calnot.exe
calupd.exe
It will seem like nothing has happened once you execute each of these, as they all run in the background and are very small files.
Then, close Explorer and perform an ActiveSync connection with your PC to make sure your calendar entries are properly registered on your device.
Now you should wait at least 5-10 minutes for your changes to be saved by the operating system, then you can perform a soft reset and any notification-related problems you were having previously should all be gone! (and your device may be a little bit faster too)

Hi sl9,
thank you for your post, I've found it very useful. I have frequent reminders problems on my Artemis and it's really pain for me to fight it almost every day and although I like my device I'm thinking of change it to other OS phone (Palm OS or Symbian) only because Microsoft don't care about clients.
I hope other users will add their tips in this threat so we could finally make our WM devices more stable and reliable.
For those who deleted to much from notification queue and their PDAs don't synchronize - there is "Recreate ActiveSync" feature in SKTools. I used it with good results so you could give it a try.

i have a problem with a duplicate:
every time i softreset i have a new duplicate of tmail.exe. how can i avoid this?

Good advice, but if you follow this HOWTO correctly then it won't break ActiveSync. The repllog.exe entries are required by ActiveSync to work so just don't delete those (although you can safely delete 1 type of repllog.exe entry - see above)

tmail.exe is Pocket Outlook, sounds like your version may be a little buggy. What OS are you using, WM2003(SE), WM5 or WM6? There is no tmail.exe entry on my HTC Universal running WM5. Check your Windows\Startup directory in file explorer, and if there is more than 1 entry of anything (especially anything that looks like tmail or outlook) then just delete the duplicate. What does this notification look like exactly, is there any other text besides "tmail.exe"?

Try SKtool Lite. Free and good to clean Notification Queues

Yes, I know that. Maybe I should write: if you unintentionally delete...

On my Artemis with WM6 there is no tmail.exe in NQ too, although I'm sure I saw this entry (maybe before upgrading to WM6).

You could even buy full version. It's not so expensive and has unlimited free upgrades. They have unbelievable support. I wrote them 2 times and they send me advices after couple hours (last time it was Sunday
Good luck

Do you know what notification is this?
After soft reset I have always duplicates notifications (logs from SKTools):
Application: {635A02A8-E099-4E88-8797-2DDD7119C909}
Notify Type: 2
Event Status: 0
Event Type: 0

Anybody knows from where are these entries?
Thanks

my ppc has windows mobile 6 with aku 0.3.0. i have looked a bit more:
a new tmail.exe duplicate is left into the notifcation queue every time, when my device automatically sends/receives mail for my pop3 gmail account. it was set to do it once a day and i changed it to manually and now i have no tmail.exe entries anymore.
but i have a new question:
i have five alarms for every day from monday until friday.
for each of this alarms i get a queue entry with "windows\clock.exe" and the correct time. so i have 5 queue entries for clock.exe.
but what does happen, when one of these alarm is ringing and i press "dismiss"? should it create a new entry for the same day in the next week immediately or does it leave only 4 entries in my queue?
because on my ppc it acts like in the last example:
the last time i deleted and added my alarms was last week on wednesday. so last week's thursday, friday and this week's monday is already gone. thuesday and wednesday from this week are left over and so i have only these two alarms in my notification queue.
will my ppc create new entries for the next week, if all the current alarms have been done, or should a new one be created immediately after an alarm has rung/rang/ringed, no idea ?
did you understand, what i mean? i ask it, because i don't know if my ppc has a bug or if it is working right.

I've setup SKtools to clean notification Queue every night while I sleep and so far my morning alarm has gone off as it should.
Embarrasing how M$ can deliver an os that can't even work reliably as an alarm clock...

I do the same, but there is one problem with this method - when NQ is corrupt SKTools will never run, because it is never called... On the other hand, when I've spoken with SK Software support yesterday they've told me they observed "not working reminders" problem only when there are about 100 bad entries in NQ, so cleaning it one a day should be enough.
Jompao - do you often use recurring reminders, have you third party today plug-ins like Pocket Breeze or SPB Diary? And how long have you your device?

I agree 100%. I'm sure people using Windows Mobile devices have significantly often heart attacks then others
Truly speaking I was seeking Symbian device for me only because NQ problems...

But why do they keep coming back?
Hi,
I've been using MemMaid to handle notification and alarm problems for a long time. I run it every night and at least once or twice daily, just to keep up with dupe notifications. I found the info in the first post of this thread extremely useful and informative and I learned a lot I didn't know about the problem. Many thanks.
But... after following the suggested procedure, the dupe notifications still keep coming back!!! Even before I could do the soft reset after resyncing the calendar with AS, 7 dupe notifications reappeared. Is this just another curse of the WM op system? Or am I the only one this happens to? And is there no permanent cure other than getting a new PPC device?

New version of pmClean
Hi,
There is a new version of pmClean here: http://www.pocketmax.net/_d/pmClean.arm.cab
Program has better cleaning algorithms and Autostart feature. I used 1.04 version and found it very useful so why not to try it (it's freeware - thanks PocketMax and especially Bruce).

Many people have issues with NQ (WM2003, WM5, WM6) so you are not the only one I stopped to synchronize my device with Outlook (actually I removed Outlook 2007 from PC - too many bugs for me) and now I have less problems with NQ.

Bad news - getting new Pocket PC is not cure - all three last Windows Mobile versions had issues with NQ. So getting new device could be a good solution, but device with other OS (Symbian?).

awesome info...here's another question...
i see some of the longer-range (5-6 weeks and more) events with the Notifications\NamedEvents folders...
however, the only ones in the near term listed are for later today...does it only work 1 day at a time? will it populate tomorrow's notifications at midnite?
thanks!

There is new (1.5) version of pmClean released - another improvements and autostart bug fix.

I'm glad some people have found this useful. Spring cleaning the notification queue can often save you having to hard-reset your device, and is a good idea even if you aren't having problems with it
One last thing about duplicate notifications: You don't need to clean these so often, once a day or more is probably overkill. I clean mine once every 2-4 weeks, which is enough to prevent any problems from reoccurring.
Also note that the advice in this thread will NOT "cure" the problem, it will not prevent duplicate notifications from happening in the future.

Notifications\Named Events\WLMScheduler_TimeChangeEvent
Notifications\Named Events\WLMScheduler_TimeChangeEvent
Anybody know if I can take this one out..Have no idea why WLM (which I think is Windows Live Messenger) should have anything to do with giving me a notification event.. Wondering whether I can take out . I rarely even use WLM Messenger to begin with!

Quick fix for alert problems
I wrote a small free application, that clears notification queue. It works fine for me. Can someone (who have alarm problems) run and check it as well.
Download
Thank you

Just tried your app, found 353 duplicate entry's or so.
Seems to be working fine so far after the Soft Reset.
I will have to wait till my next Alarm before I will know if it fixed my problem but either way, thanks for the app!
ActiveSync isn't broken nor does anything else appear to be broken.

Tasks Syncing Due Date One Day Off BTW PC & PPC

I am having an issue with tasks syncing between Outlook and my PPC. I have searched XDA-Dev and couldn't find anything. Searched via Google and found a few others with the issue but no solutions.
Here's the scenario:
Edit: The below applies to Start Dates as well
Tasks are showing up with a Due Date one day less than what is on my PPC.
Change the Due Date on the PC and the PPC updates with the same (correct) date.
Change the Due Date on the PPC and nothing happens unless I manually force a sync or disconnect and reconnect.
When it does sync, the date on the PPC is correct and the date in Outlook is one day less (i.e PPC 04/14/07, PC 04/13/07).
Deleting on either PC or PPC deletes the task from both.
What I've checked & background information:
My time zones are consistent between the PC & PPC.
Appointments are not effected and sync fine.
Running Outlook 2007, WMDC and am using an Artemis (DST patched).
Syncing w/ home and work.
The other people that seem to have this issue are using different devices and different versions of Outlook.
Completely uninstalled and reinstalled WMDC.
Hard reset does not solve the issue.
I use Tasks constantly and an very disappointed with this bug. Any help/advice would be appreciated.
Thanks,
db
Hmmm. Amazed that no one else is experiencing this. Would have assumed alot of this crowd would be on Vista & Office 07 and that at least someone else would have seen it even if they didn't solve it.
Oh well.
db
I'm on Vista and Office 07, and only time I've ever seen anything like this is when I accidentally altered the time zone on my PPC. Took me a while to realise and still not sure how I did it without noticing.
However you say you've checked these and they are OK, so I can offer no further advice.
Stupid Tasks
Thank God! I though I was the only person in the world fighting with this.
I'm in the same boat as you: Outlook 2007, Vista, WMDC, DST patch. I have a WM5 Axim x50. What the heck are we doing wrong? It isn't like this is some kind of bazaar configuration. I'm a full time student and also heavily rely on tasks. In the meantime, I have to make a note (using PhatPad) and try to remember to check it later so that I can create the task on my PC. Frustrating, to say the least.
So far, it seems that this is a recent phenomenon, but I have seen some posts detailing the same problem dated in 2005 (though this was probably a legitimate issue with misconfigured time zones).
I'm going to keep looking for an answer to this. One thing I have to do this weekend is reinstall Vista (trial period ending). I'll post if there are any updates.
Good luck to all (five) of us,
Tom
Edit: If it's not Outlook, and it isn't the device, then it may be the PST file. I remember reading about a lot of people with this issue who exported their PST from Outlook 2003. I don't know. When I do this reinstall, I'm going to have some serious controls in place to figure this out, maybe even a hard reset (as much as I hate the idea of it).
Excellent work. Easy to understand.
Only difference between myself and you two then is the DST patch. I never applied it. My suspicion is that is the culprit then.
Thanks for your feedback, guys. I'm still plugging away at trying to sort it but haven't had a lot of time to try some of the more labor intensive things like recreating my whole Outlook pst file, uninstalling/resintalling Office, etc.
One interesting thing I forgot to mention is that syncing with work is flawless (XP Pro, AS 4.5).
I am planning on spending some time screwing around with timezone settings tonight and we'll see what comes of it.
We'll see...
db
Changes timezones on both the PPC and PC. Not surprisingly, no change.
db
Potentially good news. Found some software called PocketMirror Professional. You can find it here: http://www.chapura.com/pmp_wm.php ($49.95 but worth it if you use tasks as much as I do). It can take over syncing for Calendar, Contacts & Tasks in place of WMDC (I am only using it for Tasks) but it works - dates show up as they should completely seemlessly. They have a 7 day free trial so I suggest giving it a go.
One minor caveat though;follow the installation instructions closely. It's not a big deal but you can end up create some dupes when you install it. After that is seems to run fine. Need to see what it will do with my work machine tomorrow and if I need to install it there or not. I'll keep you abreast.
db
Well, after deleting some duplicated tasks (all of 30 seconds) that were created when I synced at work, everything seems to be working great with the software I posted above.
Didn't have to install it at work which was working fine (although technically you could without paying twice as the downloadable doesn't have a key). I'll work with it for a few more days and report back any issues but so far I am relieved if not $50 poorer to get the functionality back that I never should have lost...
Hope this helps.
db
This is absolutely ridiculous.
So I ended up reinstalling Vista (as I mentioned before) and doing a hard reset on my Axim x50 this weekend. After Vista was up and running, I installed Office 2007 and the OS updates. I didn’t install the DST patch, any third-party software, or even restore my data at that point. It was a completely clean install on both my PC and Pocket PC.
I tested the configuration by creating a task on the device and performing a sync. Sure enough, the task due date was one day off on my PC. This seems significant to me: in the default configuration with the absolute latest software (except for WM6 that is), there is a fundamental problem that Microsoft, and even much of the community, hasn’t acknowledged. The only explanation I can come up with is that our crappy devices are to blame, or that they don’t play well with WMDC. We’re unique, which is probably why so few people have reported this problem.
Oh well. Unless a magic patch comes along, it looks like we’re stuck. So DB, don’t feel bad about plunking down the 50 bucks; you didn’t have much of an alternative. On the bright side, it’s cheaper than getting a new device!
Thanks for everyone’s input,
Tom
I don't know if you're experiencing the same problem as I am... but here it is.
I just hard reseted my TyTN and reinstalled my appz, after an upgrade. All went well and I tried to sync it with my PC. After the sync... all my Calendar appointments, birthdays, rendez vous etc went back one day!. My Outlook was all right at first, but after the sync the appointments changed to one day back there as well.
The solution? First I erased all the wrong dates from my Outlook. Then I UNselected Calendar from ActiveSync, completed a full sync... The I REselected Calendar and did a full sync again... All was back to normal.
That was the firts time something like this had happened... I've been using Outlook & PDA's the last 6 years... with no problems... Go figure.
No, it's not quite the same problem. Only the tasks are being affected; calendar and appointments work as normal.
Creating a task on the PC results in a successful sync: all dates correct, etc. However, if a task is created or edited on the device and synced, the start and due dates are one day behind on the PC only.
Very strange and there seems to be no solution, except third-party syncing software.
Mythozz: Tried the same thing with tasks. It is usually a good strategy for sorting syncing problems. I also deleted and recreated the partnerships. Unfortunately in this case, neither helped.
My guess is that we're unfortunately in the forefront of what will likely be a growing number of people experiencing this. Sadly, I don't think we're at critical mass yet to get any attention from MS. That said, I can't imagine it will be long before it gets noisy enough to get their ear on this.
For now I, plucked down the $50 and am OK but no one should have to to get basic functionality. MS has to look at WMDC & get this sorted.
If I didn't sync in two places, this wouldn't be much of an issue since I don't do a lot of editing tasks on the PPC. But I sync between home and work and I am changing tasks & due dates constantly so the home PC treats them as if I created them on the PPC.
db
Not getting the folder selection dialogue in WMDC (PocketMirror & WM6)
dcbehan,
I'm on that 7-day PocketMirror trial with WM6 and WMDC. I like Chapura a lot. I used the product on Palm III & V waaay back then to sync with Outlook, and really want this to work.
I can check the PocketMirror conduit boxes through WMDC, but the links and double-clicking the icons are not working to get me to the place for selecting the Outlook 2007 folders.
Did you see behavior like that? What did you do to fix it?
Best,

Active tasks problem

I'm running BD3.1 (great ROM!), and have a problem with Tasks (the outlook tasks), that make them almost unusable for me - when I select to view only "active tasks", it actually shows me not only today's tasks, but all future tasks as well.
The today plug-in works fine. So I may see "4 active tasks" in the today screen, tap it, and then see all 100 tasks that have not yet started...
Needless to say that in WM5 it worked fine. I saw there were a few uncompleted threads in other forums that point the same problem (which is the reason I didn't post this in the BD3.1 thread).
Do all WM6 ROM's have this issue?
If there's a WM6 ROM that doesn't, can I just copy windows\poutlook.exe from it and replace my version?
Thanks for any help!

TIP to get rid of Phone Call and Text Notifications (SCRIPT Notifications)

If you are wondering why your device is suddenly slowing down and lossing memory. This might answer your question...
Everytime someone calls your phone, any miss calls, any text messages you receive, any voice messages, etc... there is a SCRIPT Notification generated that can accummulate over time and this can eat up your memory and processing time.
To get rid of them, I use Check Notification: http://www.scarybearsoftware.com/product_detail.php?productname=checknotify
Has a very small foot print and can be installed in the Flash Disk. Just go to it's settings and check the 3 boxes, run the application and clean all those unwanted SCRIPT Notifications.
I am pretty sure there are other cleaners that can do the same, if you find them, please let us know which one and how to configure them correctly.
Thanks...
excellent, just what i was looking for
because, as described, i've been experiencing that problem quite often, and it is very annoying, when you have an almost $2000 phone, and people ask you "why it's soooooo slow"
--- EDIT ---
it is kinda weird, but after installation, i can't find it anywhere, i even used windows explorer can't find the install path, WTF?

Did you install it in the Main Memory or Flash Disk. It should be under Program Files/Check Notifications.
If you still can't find it, use this extracted .exe file from my device. You can place it at your Flash Disk or drop it in the Windows Folder. Just create a shortcut at Windows/Start Menu/Programs
ATTENTION!!!!
In many cases after cleaning, using this software, the notification queue your device doesn't sync anymore.
The program isn't designed for WM5/6/6.1 and remove ALSO the Activesync entries (ow WMDC entries if you use VISTA).
You have to use MEMMAID to recreate activesync entries in the notification queue! (or hard reset, or recreate manually the entries, using some tools)

Works well on mine. Never erased anything other than SCRIPT Notifications, otherwise I would not have posted it here. I don't know why it erases your active sync notifications though. I have been using this software since day 1. It is the second application I installed after SKTools.

If this ever happens. Just use the attached file. Place it in your Flash Disk and run using File Explorer. This small utility will recreate the lost active sync notification allowing you to sync again. There is no need for a bloatware software like Mem Maid.

Thanks for pointig out activesync fix utility. As I've told also you can use to fix"memmaid OR hard reset, or recreate manually the entries, using some tools"
The activesync checknotify problem is a random problem, but I had it since first WM5 on IMATE Kjam (HTC WIZARD) and is still here. I've tested yesterday (X7500, Michy's 6.1 ROM) and I've manually recreated replog entries because the device won't sync anymore neither with WDMCon VISTA nor with latest activesync on XP
As tool I suggest FDCSOFT taskmanager http://www.dotfred.net/TaskMgr.htm (from dotfred) freeware Wm6 application (enclosed in many cooked ROMs)
It has all the notifcation queue feature needed, remove duplicated, remove scripts, (just choose the notification tab on the top) and many more features, as start/stop/select auto-manual services, regedit, ipconfig, ....

One thing I don't like about using MemMaid and Dot Fred's Task Manager for the removal of SCRIPT and duplicated Notifications is: it is not automatic. You have to manually check it and then confirm you want to delete it. Too many things to press after a day of text messages and phone calls.
Using Check Notifications on the other hand, it does it automatically for me after pressing CLEAR.

Thanks. I will definitely use the battery and memory CABs.
The date and time notifications, I might skip. I was hoping it would be another application. I don't want to mess with the time and date via registry because a bunch of my applications depend on it such as Pocket Live TV and Diamond TV, etc... I found out long ago, that modifying it makes the above applications crashed.

A Few Noob Questions

Hello,
I am a new AT&T Fuze owner and new in general to Windows Mobile "Professional". (Had a Symbian 60 Device Previously) I have been doing extensive reading and researching to figure out how to accomplish my goals but I keep running into dead ends. I have been searching forums and Google but I find that most information is formatted for people that have been in the community for a long time and understand all of the jargon. There seems to be so many flavors of windows and platforms that it makes my head spin and I also find that words like Smartphone, Pocket PC, Window CE, etc.. are thrown around very loosely.
Sorry for the preamble. Here is what I know so far.
Device = AT&T Fuze
CE OS 5.2.19971 (Build 19971.1.2.6)
CID = HTC_P4600 (Not listed in the WIKI here)
ROM = 1.95.502..5 WWE (10/20/08)
Radio = 1.02.25.32
Protocol = 52.39c.25.22h
First I was wondering if there was a positive way of knowing if a certain piece of software will work with my device and what that spec would be. Like does it go by windows version, phone version, both? Or at least some general rules of thumb what to take note of before trying a piece of software. (If it was designed for or works on other flavors of Raphael is it safe to try?)
My biggest problem at the moment is I can't seem to install anything anymore. I am getting a message about unsigned cabs or files missing. I'm hoping this wasn't something I did but it's a possibility. Some software "PPCPimBackup.exe" will still install but most won't like "Advanced_Configuration_Tool_v3.3.cab". I even tried to make a simple .cab using CeRegEditor to adjust the city string for the weather tab in TF3D. Any help here would be most appreciated. I am very weary of all these so called "unlockers" out there and even read a thread here where someone bricked their device by installing the wrong software for the device.
Is the Fuze the same as the Diamond? (They look identical)
What is the preferred way to back up the entire device or is it even possible with standard software? Most of what I found backs up PIM info.
When a program (Taskmanager 3.1) says to minimize, where does it go? How do you bring it back to the foreground or do you have to install a taskbar manager?
I actually have more I want to ask but that probably wouldn't be prudent. I think if I could help myself better once I understand what software I can and can't use with my phone.
Many thanks in advance and apologize for noobing up your forum =P

I'll try to answer some of your questions.
1) Normally, software will say windows mobile 5 or 6 as a requirement along with maybe .Net Framework. If it's for Windows Mobile most likely it'll work. Just have to try it and see.
2) Your programs are probably not installing because you may not have the required .Net Framework. I know Advance Config requires .Net Framework 3.5. So if you don't have it, install it. You can find it here or from Microsoft's website. You need the Windows CE or Compact version.
3) The Fuze is similar to the Diamond but don't go trying to install ROMs that are made for the Diamond. Use the ones in the Raphael forums.
4) If you want to backup your entire device, use a program such as Sprite Backup. This will make a full backup of entire system excluding ROM. However, if you want to do a restore, you need to make sure you have the same ROM installed, if not, it will create a lot of problems.
5) With TaskManager, when you minimize it just continues to run in the background. Program is still loaded and taking up memory/etc. Similar to when you minimize something in Windows. To bring it back, you can view the TaskManager and restore to foreground.
Hope that helps somewhat.
Wow,
Thanks you for the quick and non condescending reply. I've been surfing more since I posted and hopefully I could get you to elaborate on a few things.

I did the .Net install and it went without a hitch but still no joy. I noticed on the authors support forums that others are having the same problem but no clear solution has been posted. /Sigh
I was thinking I needed to follow a procedure similar to the one listed here where you have to install a certificate and make some policy changes in the registry but since I can't find any info specifically for the Fuze I haven't done anything yet other than download the certificate that was linked in that post.
I should mention I am not a complete computer illiterate, and am fully comfortable with the registry and even more advanced techniques if necessary. I should also mention that I don't plan on replacing my rom at all. Just want to keep it to basic reg hacks, software installs, and some theming once I get things working the way I want.
I did already change one registry policy key (0000101a) to "1" from a thread I found on these forums, as it is something easily changed back but of course it did not help.

I understand what you said but what I was trying to figure out is how to recall it from the background. It doesn't show up in the TF3D task list when it's minimized so I was wondering if you had to click on the task bar or do some certain trick to bring it to the fore-front. The ability to move between programs easily is my biggest gripe so far as I seem to have to open and close the keyboard, hit home or back a lot to move around. I would love the ability to hit some hot key or some secret spot on the screen to launch taskmanager and then I could use it to go to whatever program I wanted.
I have seen a few bugs in TM_3.1 that cause crashes, but it is an awesome program and hopefully the developer will keep working out the bugs. If there is another program you would recommend that accomplished the same type of functionality I'd be interested in trying it out.
Thanks again for your friendly help.

Just looked at the contents of that cab referenced from that link I posted. It is just a Setup.xml file with the following contents.
<wap-provisioningdoc>
<characteristic type="SecurityPolicy">
<parm name="4119" value="144"/>
</characteristic>
</wap-provisioningdoc>
Any thoughts?
As for .Net, the following is from Modaco, and I found that it worked like a charm:
How to install and use .NET Compact Framework 3.5
If you're a developer or have knowledge of .net Compact Framework, you'll be aware that version 3.5 has shipped. You'll be aware that it offers a number of enhancements in features, stability and performance, and you'll likely also know that it provides full backwards compatability with previous versions of the Compact Framework. What you may NOT know is that when CF 3.5 is installed on a device, applications that target previous versions of the Compact Framework will continue to run against the old versions, and 3.5 and previous versions will live side by side on the device. Only when new devices come along will we see ONLY 3.5 on a device.
This presents a number of problems, namely
• Users who deploy CF 3.5 to their device but use applications targeting older versions will not benefit from the 3.5 performance improvements
• Developers who develop apps for pre CF 3.5 frameworks cannot easily test their applications ready for when 3.5 only devices come along
Thankfully, help is at hand in the form of a little known Compact Framework 3.5 powertoy named '.Net Configuration'. The application, which is available at Microsoft, provides the user with full granularity of control over the .net CF on their device. You can see installed versions, change the used CF version for a particular application or change the used CF version for all applications run on your device! Perfect!
Sadly in Microsoft's infinite wisdom the application in question is tucked away in simple EXE inside the 6.2MB download and somewhat hard to find, so i've taken the liberty of packaging it up into a CAB here that installs it with it's own Start Menu shortcut.
- Run '.Net Configuration' from your Start Menu
- Navigate to the 'Device Policy' tab and select version 3.5
- Select 'Apply' then 'OK'
That's it, you're done!
Thanks kindly but I'm guessing now that myself or a piece of software I've installed has borked my ability to install software. It seems I can install exe files but no cabs, including the one you posted will install.
As I've stated I have not made any attempts to unlock anything yet but have installed some software and made some registry tweaks. I wish I could see what exactly is happening like Procmon does for windows to pinpoint the problem, but I might just have to resort to a hard reset if I can't figure it out.
I'm open to any ideas but if I don't figure it out tonight I guess I'll reset tomorrow. Thanks for the guidance and help.
Cheers,

You might want to double-check that registry hack to make sure it's correct. Seems like a big coincidence that the one registry hack you've made so far is to allow unsigned cabs to install and the biggest problem you seem to be having is that you can't get unsigned cabs to install....

Yeah I gave that a shot but no joy. That wasn't the only reg hack I did but the only relating to "Unlocking". I haven't touched anything I wasn't pretty sure about. For instance I have looked at all the tweaks for speeding up the TF3D using cache setting but the numbers don't match so I never tried it. If I didn't understand what the tweak was I stayed away.
I did the PTT button tweak for voice/camera and played around with the cities for the weather app. Other than that I can't think of anything else I touched in the registry but I did a lot of looking.
On the other hand I have installed a good bit of software to try out. I have also rearranged my menu items by deleting shortcuts in the start menu folder. Even though I've done a good bit to the phone I think it might be best to start from scratch with a hard reset and start again with the knowledge I've gained in the past few days. My Opera browser has been getting a real workout with 40+ tabs going =P
I did find another thread here that has someone with a similar problem but the way it happened was entirely different. His fix was to wipe the phone and use the same software I was trying to install when I found this problem.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=3038792#post3038792
I took ecltech's advice and got Sprite Backup and made a backup already. I would rather fix the problem but it sounds like it might be difficult tracking it down so I'm prepared to start again. What would be great is finding some guide or general direction in what programs and or tweaks I should install and in what order and any other pertinent information regarding starting from scratch. "The Must Have" utilities and programs.
I can't believe how helpful everyone's been so far considering this is a developers board. I figured it was worth the risk to get chewed in the hopes of getting the best advice. With all the info surfing I've been doing it's clear that this is the site where it all happens.
Cheers and thanks again,

OMG!
I'm almost too afraid to admit it but at least I feel good that I figured it out on my own. I was smart enough to make a backup of the registry with CeRedEditor before doing anything major and remembered it had a compare feature. After loading it up It immediately occurred to me to look at HKCR\cabfile and that's where I found my answer.
I had downloaded a little free utility from SKTools called Cabinstaller that allows you to choose where programs get installed. Somehow the registry entry it made didn't correctly point to the executable. In any case I think I installed it late the other night and forgot about it because the exe files I installed after that installed fine. I should have tested it immediately and I wouldn't have had this problem. /sigh
Thank you everyone for the help and ideas and even though I've fixed this problem I still might do a full reset and start from scratch now that I got all mentally prepared to do it and start over feeling a little more confident in what I'm doing.
While it's on my mind right now and since I never got a solution for the question in my first post, is there a hack or small little program that will allow you to put a shortcut in either the top bar where the start menu is or in the bottom where the shortcut for the on screen keyboard is so I can invoke the Task Manager easily to help with navigating? I wouldn't even be opposed to a shortcut in the TF3D pop-up you get when clicking on the top right bar. It would be great if this could be done with a bloated program but not opposed to it if the program is useful.
Thanks again everyone. I guess I'll start a new post for any new questions. (I have lots but will try and figure out as much as I can by myself first.)
Cheers,
Eidolen

I think you're probably right about starting again from scratch. It would probably be less work than tracking down what's causing your problem and then you'll be starting with a cleaner slate for installing everything going forward.
There are a few different threads on here about what constitutes "must have" apps for the Fuze and the one thing I can say is that no two people agree on the list! Your best bet is to seach out those threads and see which ones you think would be most useful to you. A great place to get started is at http://www.blownfuze.org using username and password 'xda' (without the quotes)
My suggestions for the generic must haves are:
Total Commander
PHM Registry Editor (or whichever reg editor you prefer)
Diamond Tweak
Diamond TF3D Config
Other basic programs that might be worth checking out depending on what you do on your fuze are:
PocketShield or S2U2 for locking the phone
TCPMP Core Media Player
TorchButton for using the LED flash as a flashlight
BeyondPod or pRSS Reader for RSS feeds and podcasts
GoogleMaps and/or Live Search
Good luck!
Sprite backup is included in your Fuze as original software. I always keep a full backup copy on my Sd card of a good clean WM 6.1 install with all the must have tweaks done already. You will find it saves alot of headaches when you mess something up trying things out. After that I do a weekly backup as I add more and more stuff over time.
does diamond TF3D Config or diamond tweak work with this ROM version?
Thanks yzf750, I am preparing to do just that. I am getting prepared for a hard reset now once I notate what I want to keep that's on my phone already. Hopefully I can get it set up by the time my SD card arrives this coming week and can do the backup to it for keeps.
I read a blog post about doing a soft reset after a hard reset to prevent the ATT software from installing and I think I really want to try that. I just need to make sure I install the stuff I want to keep like TF3D manually afterwards. I'm hoping to find a more detailed guide for the procedure than what was posted though.
I'll post back and report if the smoke genie escapes or not.

some n00b guidance
Ok so i have been looking at these forums for a few days now doing homework before i even get the phone(its ordered). So my questions are
1. if i have AT&T unlock the phone(i know someone who works there so i hope they can help out) do i still need to do the hardspl to change radios etc?
2. Whats really the difference between all these roms built by users and just using BuildOS(im assuming this works on GSM phones and not just CDMA because its from PPC) to build your own ROM? and do most of these tweeks come prebuilt into these roms or do u still need to to other stuff? i.e reg tweaks etc, like i think it would be better for me to just build a rom with BuildOS with the apps i want etc and not keep flashing all the time
3. Is GPS still a problem for people?, i think ill just use tomtom or garmin and hope for the best as its not a huge concern. After looking around i guess its just a matter of finding the radio that works best for the individual, so anyone in the .US new england area have any recommendations of the best radio in the northeast like NYC area?
4. whats a good order to do this stuff?, i plan on using the phone for a couple days or so as stock just to get the general feel of the OS in general. then prolly flash the ROM with a custom BuildOS ROM(unless someone can provide the difference between BuildOS and say PROven ROM), then do w.e else needs to be done. ive seen the recommeded tweaks, just not sure if they still need to be done with a flashed ROM. not really looking for a game phone more office apps like RDP and irc etc, sys admin tools
Basically i think theres just a ton of info on here which is a good thing but im just getting started on Winmo although flashing etc dosent intimidate me so im eager to get started just a little unclear on some things and cant seem to find the answer just surfing, so any help or links to some stuff i might have missed is appreciated. Pretty much just want a smooth runnin ROM thats not stock of course, decent gps reception and the apps i want. thanks all
Look here, I made a little write-up for the basics using a stock ATT ROM. I ran this routine actually twice on my phone (ROM flashing junkie) so it should be fairly complete.
I have to note that, in most cases at least, I know what I do and can "recover" from a ROM flash within ~ 30 minutes, having all software, tweaks and contacts restored.
Regarding ROMs
That's an open can of worms with two next to it waiting. Read the threads and read the problems and decide later if you want to flash or not. If you are not used to WinMo phones it's perhaps better to hold back a week or two.
Some ROMs are built from original Raphael builts others are based on WinMo 6.1 but contain partially applications and tweaks from other HTC devices. The latest build # need not to be the best. For example RRE's ROM is based on the original ATT ROM and he created a really nice good performing ROM while other Chefs rip out first all guts and basics of a ROM (making it "naked") adding features and programs later. That's a more or less political discussion what's better and what's not and you have to decide yourself based on what you read and/or experience. For MY part I know Monx/HT from the Tilt times and always appreciated his work and speedy ROMs and he continued the same line on the Raphael/Fuze though it took him some time to come where he is right now.
As said all political in that regards, almost all ROMs out there ARE GOOD and have advantages in the one or the other area.
Tweaks
Yes the tweaks work even for a stock ATT ROM with ATT's TouchFlo/Manila (though I think it's plain ugly).
GPS
Again a difficult subject. For example the stock GPS (enabled or disabled assisted GPS settings) works kinda well with google maps BUT doesn't perform as expected with 3rd party GPS apps (TomTom, iGO). Keep in mind a lot came from other devices and for example iGO on the Tilt rocked down to the street number with no lag at all where the Fuze is doing more "guesstimating" than performing (compared to the Tilt).
Backup
Do a PIM backup once or twice a week and do a FULL backup once a week or if you installed new software after you confirm that you like it. If you wreck your phone for whatever reason AND you stay with the SAME ROM a full restore will work.
Just Wow!
That's an impressive piece of work there. I haven't stopped reading or poking around while I'm waiting for my SD card to get here and had quite some experience today. I did read the thread regarding doing a "Non-Bloat" Install and actually started to do it but stopped when I realized there still seems to be some residual bugs to the process. I figured for now even with the little bit of confidence I've gained I'd wait on that a little longer.

I forgot to check the memory and storage readings sadly but I figured this list could be checked against the full bloat version to see what processes and services could be killed. I figured I'd play with a full working install so if anything didn't work I would know it was from myself or software I installed instead of guessing if it was a side effect of the no bloat process. Also I could learn what the bloat was and strip it away.
Once I decided on Bloat I started a Log/Diary of everything I did for my own reference and thought it might be useful for troubleshooting later. Everything was going smooth until I decided to take on the behemoth named RealVGA.
Luckily I made a full Sprite backup previous to playing with it and am reinstalling that backup as I write this.
If there is one piece of advice I could give from the little knowledge I've gained so far is that most of the upper-end hacks/tweaks software that is available are living breathing complex entities and are not to be taken lightly. Each one needs to be thoroughly researched and understood before using unless you have an older device that has been supported for a long time. I find very little information on using most software regarding the Fuze even though it is very similar to other devices. Truth is, it is not identical which can make things hairy at times. Anyway the more you fail, the more you learn.
For other Fuze owners out there I'll post my personal log so you have an idea what programs I had trouble with and what I tried to do to resolve them. For sure I had huge problems with RealVGA as well as PocketCM and PocketCm Keyboard. It's a shame too as they all are outstanding upgrades.
Well I think I'll be ready for your tutorial when my card gets here so I will be sure to report back to let you know how it went. I already learned a lot just from reading it. For one I didn't know you could do anything over usb if you cancelled the ActiveSync. I just used that trick while restoring my phone and still haven't done a sync. I'm sure that guide will be a huge help to many like myself.
Huge Thanks!

Reboot
RealVGA is nice but not sure it's worth this effort. Just too many problems.
Noticed graphics in TF3D are much slower and laggy now as well.
"All Settings" still borked Not sure what else to try at this point.
Good info on this subject is hard to come by. Most ppl seem to have good luck with this app.
Went to re-tick the skin option in RealVGA but it was still ticked. hmmm
What I think is needed is an app that could swap resolutions on the fly with a hotkey. ( Prolly not technically possible)
At least you could have normal usage and only use for certain apps that really benefit from it.
After another reboot the "Disable phone skin" is checked again. Guess it can't be unticked.
Un-ticked "No enlarge title Bar" in Diamond TF3D Config
I am able to open the "Programs" link from the start menu, wonder why settings is screwed.
Tried settings again, no joy, was able to use home key though this time. Not locked up.
Start menu does not work now though. Yikes, had to use reset this time.
Throws arms in the air!
Hard Reset =(
You are funny eidolen.
If you want copy the files I provided to your device (since you don't have a DS yet) and play with it.
You'll hard reset anyway when the SD arrives - LOL
Your also going to find at some point that the more and more tweaks and modifications you make, more problems will start sufacing. I was a rom flashing junkie like many on this forum for 2 years. Since I replaced my prior phone with the Fuze I am running just the stock rom without bloatware and a FEW select tweaks (includes radio change). It runs fast, works good and I dont have to soft reset it all the time.
Take a look at every custom rom, Im not putting any of them down, but after time the threads on them become 100 plus pages long, the number of other fixes to get them running right become impossible to keep track of. It becomes a daily job of just trying to keep that rom working without breaking some other feature or getting it to work right. They put out weekly fixes on most custom roms. They start out with the right intention, but it soon becomes just a bloated non oem rom after time.
Its addicting and fun, but at some point a person just wants to use the phone instead of hard resetting it all the time, flashing roms nightly and trying to figure out how to fix stuff in each rom.
I reached that point now and my fuze is outstanding without having to spend days tinkering with it. It is snappy, reponsive and ALL the software I have installed on it works, and the GPS works flawlessly even inside my house.
But again, your "hands on" approch as your doing now, is probaly the best way to learn
teh bestest
between these last few posts and my little chat with our neighbors PPC on there irc channel i am pretty confident i know what the deal is now, you guys have been a great help, i think im going to play a bit with some roms of course but eventually land on a bloat free standard rom with some added apps like putty and irc etc for sysadmin work, on that note yzf750 could u tell me exactally what u have running on yours sounds like its what im looking for.

How do you remove the 50 application limit from Add/Remove Programs?

Well, the other day (on my Blackjack II), I became artificially alarmed because I went into my Add/Remove Programs menu, and found that it was COMPLETELY EMPTY! Well, after some looking around, I found that this is a "known bug" (or characteristic) of Windows Mobile (it will be blank if you have more than 50 applications installed on your phone). Well, this is the first I'd ever heard about this, so it was a surprise to me.
The good news is that you can still uninstall programs that are installed on your phone by using Active Sync, but this is still a pain if you need to uninstall something and you aren't near your PC. This is especially annoying if you are like me and easily have over 50 applications installed at any given time (being that you are reading this on this site I'm sure you're all with me on this).
Anyway, I'm just wanting to find out if there is any kind of registry hack or adjustment that can be made to raise the limit to a higher number, or possibly get rid of the limit altogether? If anyone has any info regarding this please post it up, and maybe we can finally correct this issue. Thanks!
