Overwriten files in rom - 8125, K-JAM, P4300, MDA Vario ROM Development

Does anyone knows why if you overwrite a file in your rom, especially in \windows folder it will SLOOOOOOWWWWWWW your rom down ???
i first notice that after i overwrite some htchome picture files.
My device was so slow even if i do not have the htchome active on today screen.
If i go and delete those files, the default ones appears again and the speed is back to normal.
WHY? Why? why?
Is there a way to see what files i overwritten?

I may be wrong but the files you overwriten are staying in the ram not in the rom....so that is causing slowdowns (futere mare.... )
You can't actualy overwrite the files in rom...

Is Auto Startup Customization with BigStorage ROMs possible?

Finally managed to flash my mda with a bigstorage rom
All is good but I got a slight prob with something else. Although I hated the customisation of T-Mobile, I found it helpful that the phone automatically installs all the progs and settings in the extended ROM after a hard reset.
With BigStorage, I presuming that the Extended Rom folder is amalgamated with the Storage folder. Do you guys know whether it is possible to add the Cab files (e.g. intellidialer, etc...) to the Storage folder (as it was in ExtRom) so that it automatically installs the progs and customization options after a hard reset?
Or do you recommend going back to a traditional Extended Rom inclusive ROM and edit the Extended Rom there? I understand that ROMKitchen cannot be used on Mini's so do you happen to have any other program recommendations?
If the above two isn't possible yet, is there anyway of preventing the mda from deleting the Cab files after I install from them. For instance, when I install Intellipad, the cab file is automatically deleted. I had hoped that I may use this cab file again by dumping it in the "Storage" folder and using it if I need to hard reset the damn thing again
Thanks again
Hi rockykabir
sorry first for my english... I will try to explain my solution:
1. I have made a backup of all the Extended_ROM files to my PC (open in explorer loadvdisk.exe and copy through activesync.)
2. Made the Bigstorage and the Radio-Update (thanks a lot guys for the help that I have found in this forum.)
3. Made a small CAB-File which has to start first (see atached file)
4. If this file is installed, you can create a hidden and read-only folder on the SD-Card named: 2577 (Foldername is important)
5. Place inside this folder: autorun.exe and install.m2w and make the changes in the instal.m2w file. Think its easy.
6. Place all the recent CAB-Files into this Folder.
7. Make changes as you need
Make sure, that the folder and the files on the SD-Card are read-only and the folder should be hidden (not sure about that). If not, the Cabinet files will be deleted after installation.
How do I work now with this SD-Card? Easy... After a Hardreset, place the card into your MDA. Start Ext_Start.cab.
Put out the SD-Card and put it in again..... Enjoy.
Now i search only for an easy solution to make a small Extended_ROM for the Ext_Start.cab and the IIWPO. That task will be the next...
Enjoy the day
Thanks sooo much mate!!! - thats very kind of you as this completely solves my prob. I hope this is of use to others as well

Can I copy files automatically to a RAMdisk

I would like to set up a RAMdisk (with the tools that are available here), but I have two files that I would like to have copied to the RAMdisk when I start the thing. Is there a way to do this automatically?
Thanks in advance!
the way ramdisk works is that if you copy 2 files to it they will stay there untill you hardreset or the device loose power
if you want to auto copy files to the ramdisk after a hardreset you can just add a shortcut to the program copying the files in your \windows\startup
or add and auto install cab to the extended rom
Are you sure you mean hard reset? This is the generic ramdisk I'm gonna try out, not the one made for the modified WM5 ROM's, like the Blue Angel. If it really stays there, I'm very happy! I just thought that it didn't survive a soft reset.

Clean windows folder possible ?
I'm trying to cook my own rom but when I add an EXT module, all files are in Windows directory and the app.dat file only copy them in the app directory.
So is it realy possible to have a clean windows directory, how to put files directly in app folder? must I use an OEM module with initflashfile or ???
thanks all

All files go into \windows. The first thing you need to ask is this: do I need to copy the file into another directory, like \program files? A lot of apps work just fine if you leave all of the files in \windows. The files are going to be in \windows in one form or another, so you save space by just running the app out of \windows. You need to change shortcut paths and sometimes registry key paths to get this to work, but in my experience, it works about 95% of the time. Usually, if you've got a multi-component application (several files besides just the .exe), the .exe will search for other files it needs to run in the same directory that the .exe is located in, so you're good to go if everything is in \windows. Some apps have sub-folders, so you'll have to get that folder and its contents into \windows. The best way to do this is with a .cab file or a zip file during customization (using a mortscript for the latter). Zip files are nice, because they install really quickly and are easy to make and edit.
Anyway, if you need to get files into another directory for whatever reason, I'd say that the app.dat method is probably the worst, because if you have multiple files, then you increase the file count in \windows by that amount. Put them in a zip file or a cab file, and then you'll reduce the file count to 1 for the particular package. You will also compress the files, and save some rom storage space.
You can also look into \extendir for another method to clean up the \windows directory.
You do need to be careful with some apps if they have an .ini file or an .xml file or something similar that is basically a settings file. It's usually better if these files aren't read only, so you may need to figure a way to copy the file into the \windows directory.

How to delete files from StartUp folder?

Hi,
I accidentally put actual file instead of lnk into StartUp folder on WM 6.1. Now I can not delete the file becouse it's already launched and it's not even showing in list of running programs. How do I get rid of it in StartUp folder?
Thanks,
G
it might be running in the background. try using a task manager kinda program to see running processes (e.g. wktask) and you should be able to kill it and then delete it
or rename it from somethingsomething.exe to somethingsomething.exe.bak
and softreset
Or you can usually cut the link or file in startup and then paste it somewhere else. Reset, then you can delete it.
not if it's not a shortcut but he places the exe file itself in startup in this case it will be locked and cant be cut
Can you rename the file to something not ".exe" and then reset the phone? Would it work? I've read somewhere around here someone suggesting that. After soft reset, in theory, you should be able to delete the file.

i have same problem
well, i also ever got the same problem
Sometimes, HTCHomeSetting.xml is not made to be put on windows folder but on Manilla gfx folder. And that used to be my problem
try to reinstal manilla2D, and use M2DC to backup and restore your default skin, i hope it's work
Your HTCHomeSetting.xml file is messed up.
Here is the stock XML file. Turn off M2D (untick TouchFLO in your today settings), drop this xml file in your windows folder and try reloading M2d.
I always keep the stock XML for instances like this. Even sometimes the restore doesn't fix itm2d issues.

What kinda device are you installing this on?
How are you using to transfer the files? Activesync? WMDC? Total Commander?
Are you manually applying the theme or using M2D Customizer?

its a tmobile wing/ htc herald I put the files on my sd card throu activesync and then tryed to copy them to the windows folder on my phone memory. Not sure on how to do this at all I have figured out alot of other stuff just not the theme stuff
You shouldn't have to drop the XML on your SD card. Just browse for the windows folder on your device and drop it in there right away. If it doesn't let you drop it in the Win folder, then I would drop it on my SD card and use software called ''Total Commander''. TM is pretty much a file explorer but will let you change system files that would normally error.
Being I dont know all your circumstances, this is what I would do and how I have it setup on my phone. Works flawless as well. I can change themes in seconds.
If that XML file didn't cure your problems then I'm assuming you have issues elsewhere as well.
First I would remove M2D and reinstall it. Once you have that working again, download and install Manilla 2D Customizer...

Create a new folder on your storage card and name it ''M2d Themes''. M2D customizer works with a file extension of ''.mtdct'' Some skinners will create there theme's file with this extension for you. It is nothing more then a zip file with the extension renamed.
If the theme's files your trying to install is compressed into zip format, just rename the file from ''.zip'' to ''.m2dct''. Drop the file into your new ''M2D Themes'' folder on your storage card, open up M2D Customizer and browse for the themes ''m2dct'' file you wish to install. Click ''Apply Theme'' and it does all the work for you.
I must have 30 themes in my M2D Themes folder and as I feel the need for a change, I'll load M2D Customizer and switch themes. It's a piece of cake!
Hope this helps.
My icons don't update correctly when I apply a new theme using M2DC...Someone mentioned that there are v1 and v2 themes but I can't for goodness sake distinguish between them. Apparently some hacked versions of M2D will only correctly use v2 themes...Any ideas/suggestions? I have searched all over but can't seem to find a solution other than overwriting the HTCHome...xml file...
