Is Auto Startup Customization with BigStorage ROMs possible? - JAM, MDA Compact, S100 Software Upgrading

Finally managed to flash my mda with a bigstorage rom
All is good but I got a slight prob with something else. Although I hated the customisation of T-Mobile, I found it helpful that the phone automatically installs all the progs and settings in the extended ROM after a hard reset.
With BigStorage, I presuming that the Extended Rom folder is amalgamated with the Storage folder. Do you guys know whether it is possible to add the Cab files (e.g. intellidialer, etc...) to the Storage folder (as it was in ExtRom) so that it automatically installs the progs and customization options after a hard reset?
Or do you recommend going back to a traditional Extended Rom inclusive ROM and edit the Extended Rom there? I understand that ROMKitchen cannot be used on Mini's so do you happen to have any other program recommendations?
If the above two isn't possible yet, is there anyway of preventing the mda from deleting the Cab files after I install from them. For instance, when I install Intellipad, the cab file is automatically deleted. I had hoped that I may use this cab file again by dumping it in the "Storage" folder and using it if I need to hard reset the damn thing again
Thanks again

Hi rockykabir
sorry first for my english... I will try to explain my solution:
1. I have made a backup of all the Extended_ROM files to my PC (open in explorer loadvdisk.exe and copy through activesync.)
2. Made the Bigstorage and the Radio-Update (thanks a lot guys for the help that I have found in this forum.)
3. Made a small CAB-File which has to start first (see atached file)
4. If this file is installed, you can create a hidden and read-only folder on the SD-Card named: 2577 (Foldername is important)
5. Place inside this folder: autorun.exe and install.m2w and make the changes in the instal.m2w file. Think its easy.
6. Place all the recent CAB-Files into this Folder.
7. Make changes as you need
Make sure, that the folder and the files on the SD-Card are read-only and the folder should be hidden (not sure about that). If not, the Cabinet files will be deleted after installation.
How do I work now with this SD-Card? Easy... After a Hardreset, place the card into your MDA. Start Ext_Start.cab.
Put out the SD-Card and put it in again..... Enjoy.
Now i search only for an easy solution to make a small Extended_ROM for the Ext_Start.cab and the IIWPO. That task will be the next...
Enjoy the day

Thanks sooo much mate!!! - thats very kind of you as this completely solves my prob. I hope this is of use to others as well

Autorun from the BigStorage

Hi All,
as many of you, I have converted my Extended_ROM to a bigger Storage folder. Unfortunately I still need most of the software packages that were included into the Extended_ROM. I was looking for an AUTORUN.EXE that could allow me to place my CABs into the \Storage folder and install them after a Hard-Reset. No need to say I didn't find anything that fully complied with my expectations. The only useful thing I found was an autorun.exe that executed from the 'Storage Card'. A quick modification with an Hex Editor led me to the solution. I thought it was time now for me to pay my dues with this forum that has helped me so many times in the past. So here is the file !
Instructions are dummy proof !
Compress all your CABs (Extended ROM and/or other software packages) into a ZIP file (not RAR!) and name it 'ExtendedROM.zip'
Create an Hidden/Read Only folder called 2577 on the root of \Storage.
Copy the ZIP and the Autorun.exe files into that folder.
Hard Reset and watch at you Magician installing all the Cabs for you.
Enjoy !
Silver Bullet
I have just tried your method and it works!
Thank you very much indeed.
I consider this to be the best companion to the BigStorage. I zipped 14 cab files into a 8.6M zip file. I would save this as backup in my storage card. Next time, after a ROM upgrade, I can simply copy these back to Storage to have a clean and quick installation of the essential files.
By the way, the old trick of skipping the auto installation still works (i.e. soft reset immediately before autorun starts).
Moderator: I would very much recommend to make this a sticky, please.
hi there,
After I read almost all BIGSTORAGE postings here. I feel confident about do it. So few days ago I prepared myself to upgrade my O2mini. When I press "power-on" button + "camera" button + "soft-reset" hole with stylus... my O2mini got hard-reset
What I did wrong? You guidance is much appreciated. Thanks.[/quote]
You must have missed to press the camera button, just do it again, you should get it into bootloader mode.

Thanks itplanet. I will give it a try again.
Oh! One last thing i forgot to mention:
please ensure that the CABs you are ZIPping are not flagged as READ-ONLY.
Autorun.exe unzips the ExtendedROM.zip file into your PDA memory.
If the content has been stored with the Read only flag set, the cabs will not be deleted just after they've been installed, thus wasting your valuable memory.
Ciao!

How to edit CAB files?

Hi,
yesterday my first pocketc phone arrived (BTW it's a german MDA compact); yeah, the first windows mobile of my life!
Thanks to this forum (which i've been lurking for a while) i was able to install the latest Italian Imate Jam ROM (1.12) flawlessly, i was even able to avoid extended_rom's cabs installation (by soft-resetting the device after a hard reset). As soon as i'll buy a new sd card and a card reader, i'll apply the big storage trick too.
Now I have a question: on this thread Sun75's talking about a modded extended rom where most of the CABs included have been modified by changing their default install location (from memory to storage).
Now i wonder: how can i edit my own CAB files to modify their install path or even their content (by, for example, replacing a program with another as Sun75 did)?
What program should i use? How can i 'mod' my own extended rom as Sun75 did???
Thanks u all,
Isidoro
PS: i've searched this forum for a similar post but found nothing; i used Google too; i've also RTFM. I apologize if this question has been answered somewhere but, if so, i wasn't able to find it.
WinCE Cab Manager
Go HERE
If u want to install cabs on SD card, then simply install a registry editor, then navigate to, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/software/Apps/Microsoft Application installer, and change the DWORD Value of "fAskDest",to 1(Dec),then u will be asked each time u install a cab file of the desired destination....
But if u want to edit cab files, search for "WinCeCabManager 1.1"....
My advice will be to copy ur extended rom to the storage card, make a backup copy to ur pc hard disk, then performe the big storage, edit the Dword value mentioned above, then install the desired cabs,on the SD...
Good luck

Extended ROM

hey Does any one have any tools to unlock the Extended Rom for my Magician (O2 xda2 mini), i wanna install some cabs in there pls do help.
1.Download Resco Explorer or Total Commander (cos you will need either these 2 program to enable "Reveal all files"
2. To unhide the Extended ROM, after you reveal all files, go to your File Explorer (Start, Programs, File Explorer)
3. Using the File Explorer, go to Windows folder and find this file called LoadVDisk.exe and then just run the file
4. Next, using File Explorer again, and go to \My Device and you should see the Extended ROM folder
5. Click on the Extended ROM folder and find the necessary cab file and click on it..
6. soft reset
also the search function is also quite useful. try it once in a while...
hey thanks for the advice will check on it, thank you.
hey man it works so how do i place another program in ext rom and will it be installed everytime i hard reset, and yeah since its unlocked how do i lock it again. than for the help hoping for a reply soon.
u cant place any new programs in the ext ROM. that ROM is supposed to be inaccessible to u. ur ext ROM should be hidden after the soft reset. check it!
You may not be able to place anything in the ExtROM till you unlock it. You have only "unhide" the ROM by running that utility. Till you unlock it you can only read the contents not write into it....
so tell me how do i unlock the ext-Rom of a magician, has anyone got any idea, pls let me know if there are any possibilities, i want to unlock the ext. rom of my O2 xda2 mini, pls help.
There are more possibilities read its content, (unhiding it). One possibility to hard reset it (pressing the Power button while pushing RESET). This will erase every data+programs from the device.
When the 1st boot finishes the ExtROM cabs are beginning to install. You have to Soft Reset the device (pushing RESET) to interrupt it. No cabs will be installed and ExtROM will be readable.

There are no unlockers for Magician AFAIK. But now most of the people go for big storage hack with which you get 27MB of extra space for storage. Put ExtROM on the SD card. Lots of material avilable on this forum for doing so..
what is the advantage of having a big storage other than ext.Rom, if i need to can i reverse the process back to normal.
The term “Big Storage” in a nut shell is the process of modifying the built in ROM file of the Magician and deleting its “Extended ROM” contents which frees up approx 20Mb of space. This new space or “Storage” can be used to install 3rd party apps etc and won’t be deleted after a hard reset. The only way to restore the contents is by “Flashing” the ROM again with a new complete ROM File. - excerpt from ampda guide
so what is the latest rom with the big storage for a magician. i surely would love to make a switch over. thank you.
The latest and last ROM for the Magician is 1.13 with Radio 1.12. Actually you can convert any ROM to BS.

Cab-file creation question.

Hi,
I have a question. I have for example SPB Mobiele Shell. We all now this has to be installed via a PC and i needs a serial to install. I have the program and the serial and i would like to make a cab-file of this 2. I have a program to make cab-files, WinCE CAB Manager. Can anyone explain to me how i can do this? I like to have this on my SD-card and like to install it from there in case of emergency's. I hope someone can help me with this.
Thx
many activesync install exe's
can be renamed to zip and one can out the cab files
give it a try

Tried that but no luck. I think this is not what i mean. I would like to turn this exe into a CAB and the key included. So when i install the Cab i don't have to register.
one would think the program maker took precautions to make that impossible otherwise your cab could be distributed as a pretty easy free version
you can try to single out what files it depend
on and make a cab file from cratchs
and if the exe or dll files got alter when the serial was given
that cab would be reg'd
otherwise you would have to find out what registries was altered in the
serial process and make a reg which which did those alterations
and get the cab file to run it
Most installations that require you to install through activesync end up leaving a cab file behind. Check Program Files\Activesync\SPB... for the cab file. If it is not there restart the installation but after you have executed the setup file leave it alone and search for the cab file again. I hope this is what you were looking for
ALL exe that install via activesync have a cab, some are hidden in the profiles temporary files, some auto-delete once installed, so leave the application hanging in the install and do a search for recent files and sort by date/time (remember to allow it to scan hidden and system folders). a lot go into the activesync directory, some go into program files, i have even found some that go into the internet explorer temp files, install, and then delete themselves. The most common hiding place is your computers profile temp folder --- typically found under
C:\Documents and Settings\PROFILE\Local Settings\Temp
just dig around, its not to difficult once you find the 3 most basic hiding places.
good luck.

You can simply download the CAB files from SPB site directly.

I have run into a similar situation where my installation was failing due to the huge size of a CAB file.
In my case, the size of the CAB was nearly 23mb and the free storage left was around 26mb. This made the installer fail as it ran out of space midway during the install.
I know one thing for sure was that the PC installers (Exes that would run on the PC that would extract the CAB on the device) would extract the CABs and put them in \windows\appmgr\install folder and would trigger the installer on the device.
So during my second attempt, when the device prompted for installation location "device or storage card", I opened up the explorer on the device (guess you can do the same thing with Windows Explorer since your would stay connected over USB using Activesync) and went into \windows\appmgr\install folder and made a copy of the cab to the storage card (you can copy to your PC as well).
Exited the installer and then installed the cab from the storage card and the installation went fine.
Not sure about how the SPB apps work since there are two options during the PC install. Trail or Registered version. Based on the option chosen, it would either extract the necessary CAB (either trial or registered). I hope it creates a "Registered" version of the app in the CAB after you follow the above steps.
Hope this helps.
PS: I wish that the standard install location on the device "\windows\appmgr\install" be changed to the storage card by some tweaks. So far not successful in finding/getting one.

install a clean rom, or customize your own. the windows directory is going to be a little large regardless, the operating system is there..
what is the normal size of windows folder
any how can i customize my room to remove and add new applications
That's basically what got this community started... just about everyone here can testify to having looked into ROM Cooking... please research before asking how to do it, because I PROMISE there's a thread or two out there about it
Clean windows folder possible ?
I'm trying to cook my own rom but when I add an EXT module, all files are in Windows directory and the app.dat file only copy them in the app directory.
So is it realy possible to have a clean windows directory, how to put files directly in app folder? must I use an OEM module with initflashfile or ???
thanks all

All files go into \windows. The first thing you need to ask is this: do I need to copy the file into another directory, like \program files? A lot of apps work just fine if you leave all of the files in \windows. The files are going to be in \windows in one form or another, so you save space by just running the app out of \windows. You need to change shortcut paths and sometimes registry key paths to get this to work, but in my experience, it works about 95% of the time. Usually, if you've got a multi-component application (several files besides just the .exe), the .exe will search for other files it needs to run in the same directory that the .exe is located in, so you're good to go if everything is in \windows. Some apps have sub-folders, so you'll have to get that folder and its contents into \windows. The best way to do this is with a .cab file or a zip file during customization (using a mortscript for the latter). Zip files are nice, because they install really quickly and are easy to make and edit.
Anyway, if you need to get files into another directory for whatever reason, I'd say that the app.dat method is probably the worst, because if you have multiple files, then you increase the file count in \windows by that amount. Put them in a zip file or a cab file, and then you'll reduce the file count to 1 for the particular package. You will also compress the files, and save some rom storage space.
You can also look into \extendir for another method to clean up the \windows directory.
You do need to be careful with some apps if they have an .ini file or an .xml file or something similar that is basically a settings file. It's usually better if these files aren't read only, so you may need to figure a way to copy the file into the \windows directory.
