Guys it's just me or it is a fact that the progress of windows mobile is really slow?
I mean there are several versions of windows mobile, 6.0 got our before 5.0 was even running well enough (not to mention several bugs in 5.0 that were barely fixed) and I wonder: wouldn't it be better to stick to an OS version for a longer period of time and make it run really good?
I won't go into a debate mac vs pc or anything of this kind, but isn't the standard windows mobile interface a bit boring? I like the iPhone for the innovative interface and design only, or another model I've seen m8 from meizu.
Something should change, not just a fancy gradient in the titlebar and the menubar!!!!!
I have a problem with the keyboards too. The MS sip is the same since 2002 pocket pcs!!! And that is really a lot of time of using the same cra.ppy system, and forgive me for overreacting but I think entering texts is a main concern, we all use these devices mainly as communicators or for various information storage that needs to be edited, moved from a location to another an all these actions require user input...
I know there are lots of experienced users on this forum, so this is a call to all of them , I need their suggestions in what would be the best choice for a text-input software for Pocket PCs?
I was using the SPB keyboard for about 2 years now I really like it, it's just that it covers all my text (yeah, I know it's fulscreen ), and I would like to try some similar variants: concern #1 : it must have big keys or it's useless to me.
Thanks for your time, everyone!
I'm using ZTA4 SIP, it's mainly for Chinese input but also can be used for English typing.
Cheers,
Vibranze
thanks, any link for that?

Vibranze thanks for the efforts but the ZTA4 SIP DOESN'T WORK ON MY DEVICE.

Basically I wasn't overly impressed when I saw the iphone in terms of what it did, because it doesn't do anything my WM5 doesn't. the only thing I was impressed at was the interface, the total touch screen etc(altho it is missing a qwerty key board which I couldn't live with out). One part of the touch screen interface that I was the most impressed with was the finger dragging, scrolling! But this can be done on WM5 devices because I've already downloaded Sygic's .mobile which allows you to do it through your contacts.
So Basically I'm sure that one of the many clever programmers on here could write a little program that allows you to use finger scrolling where ever a scroll bar is needed? I.e. file emplorer, music menu(windows media player), text message list, photos, etc.
Or if someone knows where I could get such a program from?
Thanks
this would be sweet because we windows fans wouldn't have to convert to the darkside.
just like the early dayds of apple.....microsoft swoops in and reinvents the game. but only thing it aint microsoft doing this.
why buy a new phone when u can take the guts of it and dump it into your own
good job on the programers you guys rock.
Check this video out, the guy has done just that!
http://techdigest.tv/2007/02/watch_the_iphon.html
I've seen that video already, but thanks. it was that and the program .mobile that made me hope that someone on here would be able to do it for the rest of the windows mobile platform! if I was talented enough I'd do it myself but this is way beyond me. i just think it would be a great to be able to navigate menus and list and make life a lot easier.
Can we download it from somewhere?
Download What?
that GUI seen on that video.
the best program to make it look like that is wisbar desktop but it costs! has for the menu scrolling i haven't got a clue thats why i was hoping someone may be able to write a program on here for it

Agree, i used the wisbar advance, but the scrolling gui was amazing!
I am wondering how he did it?
it was, but i don't know how he did it! i know you can down load a program called .mobile and that allows you to scroll through your contact like that, so it clearly can be done! so someone must be able to do it for the rest of the phone?!??!
What is it that can or can't be done guys?
Picsel Browser uses momentum based full screen drag scrolling, amongst other apps. It's not a difficult thing to do. The implementation in the video is particularly nice (if not particularly useful IMHO), but it's not some kind of mystical voodoo. It's just programming.
V
vijay,
I don't think you would be capable of doing this, no way....
(ps: please, please rise to the challenge!)
On a serious note the Universal lacks a scroll wheel which I have always had on my previous PDAs. To be able to have a generic touchscreen based scrolling mechanism would be very useful (ie not just for tracks and contacts, but for everything).
Can anyone post a link to the download of this?

As explained by Vijay this is just programming. If you dont have programming skills, just forget it. If you do then the technical part is not that difficult. The whole point is more about doinga nice design
Anyway let's hope he will make is work public (The scrolling bar is one thing, but the whole setup is actually nice...)
If anyone has this (doubt the guy gave it out before he got shut down) but in case he did... i would like to get my hands on this...
the point of me starting this thread was to see if anyone on here knew where I could get a program that would allow me to scroll all the menus and lists in my WM5 by dragging my finger across the screen, if there wasn't already a program out there then I wondered if someone could write a program for it? as my skills in this area are nowhere near good enough! I think a program like this with look great but more importantly be really useful, as I use my finger to navigate through most of my phone.
if this is just programing, please can someone with the skills do it????
Thanks

I am thinking of putting on WM6 onto my SPV M5000 and was wondering what were the advantages / disadvantages of WM6 over WM5 in everyday use. Is there a thread or comparison somewhere Ican check out
I've been running WM6 for many months now and this week reverted to WM5 - I've tried pretty much all the ROMs and WM5 simply is more stable, although not itself perfect.
The main advantage, to me, in WM6 is the Outlook client with HTML email support, although I can live without that. The terminal services / remote desktop client is better too. Other than those, the rest are just pretty fluff, but that's just *for my use*. Note: One man's fluff is another man's, erm, necessity :s

Not really mate!
If you've used wm6, you'd find -
1. Its just as stable as wm5 (the later roms!)
2. Lots of tiny improvements
- Better phone search and dialing
- Better keyboard support all over
- Quick search in outlook messages (cant live without this!)
- Better look and feel
- Html support
- Better IE
- Latest office version support
- Lots of minor addons, which make WM5 complete by covering the gaps!
If you ask me, its a no brainer to upgrade. I suggest give one of the latest builds a try and see for yourself. If you think there are problems, you could always revert back
Cheers,
San
I believe that the major drawback of WM6 is the lack of Video-Call functionality. It is being introduced now, but still is buggy.
Anyway, I don't use that, as the company that pays my phone bill does not allow me to.
On the other hand, WM6 does look much better and seems to be as stable and fast as WM5, if not better. So why keep a less good looking firmware?
Also, I believe that Internet Explorer makes use of the VGA screen in WM6, while WM5 did not.
Then there are all the small things that make the phone nicer.
Cheers,
vma
memory management of wm5 is superior...
For me its the most important aspect of wm6 that must be corrected...
Other than that, wm6 are better!!

This is not WM6 limitation. It is just a minor incompatibility of old WM5 DLLs with WM6 dialer. HTC could fix this in 5 minutes if they would bother. We cannot do that as we don't have the sources.
The best WM6 changes are
- improved memory manager over WM5. In WM6 virtual address space is less wasted than in WM5. Slot 1 DLL sections can be aligned on 4 Kb boundary (64 Kb on older OSes) and resource-only DLLs are mover to slot 127
- Exchange 2007 support (html email, "company directory", search over your mailbox, etc)
- improved dialer (that is why we just cannot copy video call DLLs from WM5)
- VGA in IE
- Office 2007 document support
- some other tiny improvements for OEMs, like new resolutions (up to 480x800), ability to control led blinking in ringtone scripts (WM5 only could control vibra), secondary displays API (in WM5 only smartphones could have secondary display)
- VoIP API support in OS
These all changes should not cause major increase in OS number. WM6 is just a "WM5 second edition" or WM 5.5.
WM 6.1 improvements over WM6
- Chat-like SMS that cannot be turned off (I personally hate it, prefer old style).
- Improved memory management in DLLs. Some of the DLLs can be loaded to shared memory region - so they would not waste vitrual address space in slot 1,0 (Athena already does the same, so MS just stolen HTC idea)
- Minor IE improvements
- Improved exchange 2007 support (this is really good)
- Some minor BT stack improvements (for example it automatically uses "0000" as a pin when pairing with BT headset)
- Media player is updated. I don't know what is changes as I don't use that trash.
- Ugly task manager. Hopefully it would be more useful in release.
The amount of changes is similar to changes between WM5 and WM6. MS marketing guys may call that "WM7" in the future.
from my experience
Advantages of WM6:
all stated above by others
Disadvantages:
More battery drain
More Memory drain
Internet Sharing is not that great
Best would to have WM5 rom with WM6 icons(look and feel)......best of both worlds.
It's faster, looks better, works better and supports more enhancement patches! I already have mine looking like an iphone and working at the speed of light! WM5 is just slower and not as sharp!

Totally agree about trying it out. For me, it's borderline too unreliable and the downsides of WM5 don't *much* matter. As I said earlier, everyone will have slightly different needs, so weigh them up and take the plunge.

Hi!
I think you're missing out the keyboard improvements & search feature-adds in wm6. This is extremely useful if you use your uni in standard flip-closed landscape mode and happen to use the keyboard often.
For example do this -
- Open messaging, and HOLD DOWN the "H" key until you get a help popup. This shows all the keyboard shortcuts for the messaging app. To activate a shortcut, just press and hold the corresponding key.
- To search for a message, all you need to do is, start typing a part of the subject/sender name and it instantaneously matches all messages matching the criteria. Its extremely useful i'm sure! For instance, if you're trying to find a message sent by someone, just start typing his name to see all messages sent by him! Or type a part of the subject! If searching in SMS'es, the name or part of the sms message itself can be searched!
- You can start typing a name out directly from your today screen, this launches the phone app and searches the name! Very quick and useful!
These 3 features alone are good enough which prevents me from rolling back to wm5! Besides, its also stable that i never need to restart my pda in days! I had a lot of trouble trying to get it stable, but the radio stack 1.15 did the trick for me! I suggest you experiment and find the version that works good with your device/operator/location!

It's actually alot of different mod's and patches! There is a Slider application with a VGA Patch and a Configuration App to have the iphone slider unlock. There is an iContact application that lets you scroll through your contacts using your finger (very nice feature to have and show off ). There is the PocketCM Keyboard with a black skin and a VGA patch (much cooler and more usable than the iphone keyboard). There's also the HTC Default black theme to give the whole PPC an iphone look and feel! If you're even more of an iphone GUI fan, you can take it a step ahead an install new icons and tweak some of the other UI elements to have fun!
You can find all of the above mentioned stuff at www.freewareppc.com.

memory footprint nearly same on reboot, after a period the memory gets sucked somewhere even if you aren't using any apps. Now that somewhere is the question area.

Windows Mobile 7 will dramatically change the way we use mobile devices. It will emphasize the use of touch on the device, as well as motion gestures created by using the device. It is, absolutely, Microsoft’s effort to beat back the iPhone, and the iPhone is referenced several times in the document.
Windows Mobile 7 will use touch gestures, similar to how the iPhone does. You will be able to flick through lists, pan, swipe sideway, draw on the screen. A lot of emphasis has been put on making navigation easier and doing away with scrollbars, including a new scroll handle that allows for multiple ways of finding items extremely fast.

Also, row 1 column 2 shows a SIP keyboard. I think this is the PPC version.
Well it certainly looks like more then just a skin face lift, looks pretty darn cool. I hope we can use it on our recently new devices, but when they say that gestures will be controlled by a camera looking up through the screen, i dont know if that applies to device hardware we have now?
Id on' really know how the biotouch stuff works right now
edit: ohh they must mean the actual camera on the back/front f your device that would do that sort of recognition I guess. I just remember seeing this youtube video of a microsoft screen witht hat "shock" technology where the guy said the screen had a a camera under it so it was able to follow all your gestures etc.. perhaps nto the same tech we are talkigna bout here I suppose.
It sure looks interesting. One thing though:
It will feature graphical transitions, subtle effects, and other things to make it more interesting to look at.

My fears are that - as with Vista - it's a lot of window dressing with limited (added) functionality. And for all that window dressing, we need more power. More power means more battery power. Maybe I'm alone in this, but I'd rather have a dull looking tool than a great looking gadget.
At this moment, the Psion 5MX that I used to own, beats a WM6 device on functionality. Hands down.

I just have to say, if you read the tech docs, Vista added a LOT under the hood - it's not just an XP "skin." Truth is, I even see a lot of added functionality in plain view as well.

This really doesn't mean anything... just because it looks like a Zune doesn't mean it IS a Zune. As I posted in this thread a month ago (to VERY little fanfare ), MS has an entire department dedicated to giving WM the functionality of a Zune. It's called the "Pink and Purple Project."
The only thing that scares me is that they'll make it SO much like the Zune that I'll lose my Media Player functionality - I remember reading that Zunes have proprietary software and don't use WMP - they're not even "PlaysForSure!" Not sure if that's accurate.
However, can't Media Center convert saved shows to a low quality and sync up with a Zune automatically over WiFi? How sweet would that be for my Tilt!

If you've read anything about Windows Mobile 7 you would know that Microsoft will not have different SKUs for SmartPhone or PocketPCs this time around.
It will be one size fits all. (Probably still in a few different flavors so OEMs can chose one with Office and one without etc, but the general functionality, look and core will be the same)

Maybe I'm an idiot, but I think think this Smartphone vs. PPC argument is moot.
You see, the gestures and touch features (such as dual touch) described in that document can't be done with Smartphones OR PPCs yet. They require the new touch system that the iPhone has (using electricity from your body vs. pressure on the screen), and thus these features (and maybe WM7 entirely) will depend on an entirely new generation of devices.
As such, if WM7 is truly such a huge leap, I doubt we'll see the entire thing released for the Tilt - I'm sure some chefs will extract and add features to WM6, but looks like the Tilt and ANY WM6 devices at this point won't be able to handle that stuff.
(That's not even my $0.02 worth, because there's a distinct possibility that I have no idea what I'm talking about...)
I found this, SEXY

Citrap
Seeing as the kaiser has no accelerometer, that feature is useless...
And for all you noobs who are going to say GPS!!!, that is no where in hell as accurate as i needs to be to detect in/out in 2 or 3 inches (pulg.)

I just have to say, if you read the tech docs, Vista added a LOT under the hood - it's not just an XP "skin." Truth is, I even see a lot of added functionality in plain view as well.

Sure, but most of it is eye-candy and stuff that I don't care about. I want functionality, stuff I can use.
For some reason, I can't use my keyboard to input any data through My Mobiler, nor can I use the copy/paste feature. My keyboard only works on the home screen for dialling numbers!?
So basically, is there another way to connect to my Vox (6.1) using my PC?
Is there a VNC server for the phone?
Shame My Mobiler doesn't work. It's great to use, but keyboard input is my main concern.
A program called True connect works perfectly but it's ugly and costs £15!!
Thanks
I'm having the same issue as well on a HTC S620... Seems to not work on keyboard input

Could you add Celio Redfly Desktop Mobile Viewer Beta to your comparison list, please? I don't know if it is worthwhile but as you are a pro in this field and pride yourself in doing this sort of testing, if only for the sake of thoroughness ... it would satiate my curiosity.
Thanks,
Wovens

Started testing it. So far, looks VERY cool.
I'm having a problem with the mute, I manually muted my phone (on the touch pad) and later I un-muted it with the mouse by clicking on the my mobiler display and now my phone is stuck with the speaker off, if I answer a call I can't hear anything (but they can hear me). Any suggestions on how to fix this? I really need help.
Hi Gents, my name's Paddy and I'm the proud new owner of a TG01 thanks to Orange selling them off at £150! I love it for the fact that I have 24/7 internet access in my pocket, I have a phone and SMS and the rest I'm gradually finding out...(only had it 2 weeks).
I can navigate my way around the device 'now,' but haven't a clue how to change and customise the rather bland "Today Screen," with it's multitude of stripes!
Having looked through this section, I'm in total AWE of you gentlemen, who have the skill and knowlege base to change these things and some of your screens are just amazing, with BIG weather symbols, LARGE clock faces, the date (which I don't have) ..etc, and 'I' would just love to have a go at changing and customising mine (if it's not 'too hard' or risky for a beginner like myself).
Reading things like, TITANINUM; HTC; DOWNLOAD CABS (aren't those taxi's?) is a new language to me, so I need some hand-holding on this one, and basically a 'paint by numbers' BASIC guide on how to change things on this phone of mine (This is from a guy with a 1938 working phone in the house!).
I appreciate that you fella's are leagues ahead of me on what these gadgets 'can do' and what one can 'do with them,' (And it's great to find fok who are so into doing these things) and I understand if my request is rather trivial in the greater scheme of things here, but I honestly wouldn't ask if I didn't want to learn and really do 'need the help and assistance .'
Yours in anticipation. PADDY.
Hi
One of the best things you can put on the TG01 (and the most simple) is SPB mobile shell. Can be found here:
http://spb.com/pocketpc-software/mobileshell/
Unfortunately you do have to pay for it after the 15 day trial, but for the additional functionality it gives your phone, well worth it
So much nicer than the shoddy tosh interface.
Widgets include:
Clocks, Calenders, Wireless switches, Battery indicators, Messaging notifications, Weather, Media player, Photo frames . . the works
There are various addons for mobile shell available on XDA.
Doesnt cost to give it a go
Hope this helps
Thanks for that.
I didn't even know about that, so thankyou. I'm going to have a look now to see what they have to offer.
When I see things like the pictures posted by members here of their customised screens, and compare it to the default options of my TG01 screen, the two really are planets apart! like different phones almost!
It would have been so much nicer if Toshiba had better options available for the screen layouts, but alas no. So hence my asking for this help.
Thanks again, I appreciate the effort. Paddy.
spb shell it would be fine for you and much more things...
Btw a .cab file is a windows mobile file to install directly on your tg01 an application(any kind of)(like copy/paste[somewhere on tg01, maybe storage card]/tap on .cab & follow onscreen instructions.
You can have something like this by adding SPB Mobile Shell and a skin on top of that.
Skin..etc

I can follow the downloading of the SPB (Seems straight forward - even for 'me!'). But what is the 'addition of a skin ontop' mean please? (don't worry, I know when I am talking about things I'm really familiar with, it's easy to overlook the lesser knowledge of others' until someone stops me and says, "I didn't quite grasp that, could you just explain more slowly please...").
The effect (shown in the pics) looks great! it's just 'how to' get there that I don't know... (gotta start somewhere I guess).
Putting a skin onto mobile shell means that its changing the original graphics for different ones, like for example the launcher bar at the bottom of the homescreen, or the clock. Personally Im happy with most of the supplied graphics, and the only thing I've put on extra is a widget pack for extra functionality. One baby step at a time Just install mobile shell and get used to that first, the rest will follow later
Good advice in the above post, take a small step at a time. I've tried loads of themes and I've done quite a few hard resets in the past few weeks, this means starting from afresh each time and re-syncing contacts etc.
The best theme I've seen is the Sense 2.5, however the functionality just isn't there yet, contacts not working, can't save internet favorites etc, so it's no good for me at this stage. Other skins can have problems too like memory leakage.
To get my skin I just installed the Mtstmp-Keithdupont MS Espresso cab over SPB Shell and then rearranged the widgets to where I wanted them.
Try here just search on the forum for " SPB Mobile Shell 3.5 tricks"
Really good advice! (Found some video tuition too)
I've been playing with it for the last day or so, and it seems straight forward enough and has a nice look to it! It's good to have the 15-day-trial to test it out too, as that will be ample time to see if it works for 'me.'
For anyone else out there who is a total 'newbie' to these things. For installation advice, go onto YouTube as there are plenty of step-by-step visual guides on how to download the SPB Trial (I didn't know whether to go for the CAB download or the other option! it recommended the CAB) and it breaks it all down into easy steps. 'If' you miss abit, well you can just backtrack the video guide again
The one thing I am finding tricky right now with the SPB, is when I want to make a phone call and do a 'search' via typing in a name for a number. The option of the QWERTY keyboard in my phone section always seems to escape me right now!! no idea why, but hopefully I'll figure that out as it's an important option for me to 'find' a name and number to phone.
Finally, FIRST CLASS SERVICE and help from you gents on this one, as I didn't have a clue where to look or begin, and the new layout really does look professional IMHO! Cheers, PADDY.
PADDY_M
In phone mode, you have a key(left, bottom, right near TALK [phone] sign) ''HIDE (phone) KEYPAD'', tap it and you should get the device keyboard(toshiba or else).
Good luck!
Let me know you got it...
Got it.
Thankyou!!! makes life so much easier!!
Welcome, anytime I can be helpfull...
I am not much more informed than Paddy above but perhaps more foolish. I have downloaded and installed 40 mb of Htc sense 2.1 ( i think). And cannot remove it. I think I need to hard reset? Hold down camera, vol up etc. If I do, will this return the phone to "as new" or will I also lose all original files.
I am most worried about losing coreplayer as I don't have a pc.

As far as I know coreplayer is preinstalled in wm 6.5/6.1 toshiba ROM, no need to worry about.
Regarding the faulty installation of htc stuff, I suppose(not sure 100%) you're right: hard reset=master clear(start/settings/system/masterclear ) will return your tosh as new(this is 100%sure).

If you do a hard reset, the phone will be as you got it from the store. So it will still have core player installed

If you hard reset (Master Clear is same thing) then you will be back to 'out of the box' status. When you start up a clean device like that, it installs several .cab files provided within the ROM, including the assorted Orange apps and also including Core Player.
If you want to get rid of (most) of the Orange-ness of the TG01 you can intercept this process and prevent these apps being installed, or choose just to add Core Player but none of the others. This is done by using a desktop Registry Editor via USB while it starts up. Detailed instructions are in this thread on MoDaCo (see Post #25).
Thanks very much all. That puts my mind at ease. I'll be able to try other stuff now.
