How do you install a RAR file? I have upgraded to wm6 on a wizard and don't have a clue how to install RAR files. Appreciate the help!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RAR_(file_format)
RAR is quite like zip. Use PocketRAR to unarchive the files. On the PC, the version is shareware, while it seems to be freeware on WM.

Note that WinRAR (and probably PocketRAR) is also useful for viewing (but not modifying) CAB files.
ZipGenius is free and it handles RAR and 7zip (and many more) formats.
Again, please?
Ok wise guys...
Following the posts here, trying to learn how to deal with the mysterious .rar files, I followed your suggestions and installed WinRAR.
What that got me is two files...
992 KB (1,015,808 bytes) of a "Custom RUU" file... No idea what THAT is, or what to do with it.
AND:
57.2 MB (60,022,784 bytes) of an "NBH File", again, no idea.
I've clicked on both with the reply:Windows cannot open this file..." etc.
Now PLEASE, without the technish, can someone please tell me how to use this thing?
Sorry to be asking "Stupid" questions, but we're not all IT pros out here.
All I'm trying to do is get this WM6 upgrade.
Thanx,
Woe
I'm neither a techie or an expert! but what I would do is try reading and/or searching, here's where to start:-

What you have is a rom zipped up in a .rar file. A Rom Update Utility gives the game away.

I'm able to open every attached 'download.php' file on this forum, but a few seems to be empty to my variO, while other members don't have that problem. I myself use pRAR 3.60. Are there other tools/programs to open them or are there diffferent types of *.php files which are created by forummembers?
If I understood correctly you are talking about downloading stuff from this forum directly to your device?
The *.php extension in this case is a bug. Any file may it be exe or zip or doc downloaded from a thread here by PIE will wind up as php on your device.
The only way I know around this is to use Total Commander (or similar) to change the extension to what it suppose to be (doc, exe, zip) and then try opening the file.
Opening the *.php files is not the problem, but they seems to be empty, no archived included. Like the attached one. I renamed it as rar but still no joy.
Could you try to see if this one is empty?
And are there other NLD variO users experience the same problem, with my config (see signed info)?
I think I solved you problem.
Quick look with a hex editor reviles that his is not a rar file.
It's a cab. Also desktop WinRAR has no problem opening it or extracting files.
If you rename it with cab extension then run it by clicking on it in file explorer you get the desired effect.
I am not familiar with pRAR but it may be limited to rar and zip file formats.
That's it..!!
I wished I asked this months before...
Thanx alot
Could someone please help me with this install...
I have the file "ttn.ppc.6.030.8320.cab", but the installation freezes...
Then I unpacked the cabfile, and copied the map to my storage card. I tried to run both "ttn" and "ttn2003" files within the "2577"-directory, but both installs won't work... who knows what to do??
Thanks!

Then you maybe read the thread more carefully...
The way to install TomTom 6 on the HTC VOX is by extracting all the files from the cab, you can do this with a tool like WinCE CAB or something like that. Than you manually put all the files on your phone. That's how I got it to work!
Good Luck!

I did...
I allready unpacked the .CAB file (with WinRAR, like I described im my first post) and copied the files to my storage card...
Is there a big difference in the unpacking-methods?
It won't work! Can there be a difference in the ROM version?
Mine is Windows Mobile 6 Standard, CE-version 5.2.1215 BETA
(build 17715.0.2.0)
Could you maybe send me the files, extracted from the cab file?
Thanks again!

YES There is! you can't use WinRAR, it's a special cab.. use a tool made by OCP WinCE Cab Manager!
Oke, maybe that's the point...
I tried with WinCE CAB manager, but then I get an error, saying "The file being opened is not a valid Windows CE cabinet file".
Could you please send me your cab-file, or the data extracted from it? I would appreciate it very much....
Thanks!

Help! I've searched the forums and the Web, but could not find anything that shows how to install an application without a .cab or a .exe file.
Sorry for what is probably a very basic question, but then, I'm a total noob on WM!
I'm trying to install a few applications. They all have files such as:
ALARMCLOCK.001
ALARMCLOCK.000
How do I install these on my TyTn II?
those look like the contents of a cab file. you should see an xml file in there as well. if this is a cab file you need to copy it over to your device as the cab file and execute from there. do not open it with winzip or winrar.
What was the name of that program for extracting the contents of cab files?
It didn't require installation...
I'm unable to access my collection of files as I need to get a new RAID controller after my mobo died (caused by the flashy death of the PSU). RAID 0 turns out not to be the best option...
WinCE Cab Manager
That one's shareware, right? Is it worth it?
I found it, by coincidence. Looking for somethng else. The one I was looking for is MSCEInf. You can find it easy at Molski.Biz in his dev pack.
You know, you can extract CAB files using WinRAR and i think even 7zip can too
WinRAR doesn't extract them with the proper filenames, at least not the version I have.
Never tried 7zip for cabs, but winzip and winrar always screwed them (install cabs) up for me.
I just recall it extracts it, don't shoot the messenger (unless he comes from MS!)
It did extract, but into parts/packages, not the full directory/reg files.
BTW:
What was the name of the app that lets you right click on a cab on your PC and it will install to your SP?
Been searching a couple days how to install rar files on to my Verizon XV6900 vogue with WM6.1. I am attaching one of the files I am tring to install, for general help. I can seem to install in activesync, from withing sorage card, etc.
Thanks, in advance
Dave,
Unless you have pocket Rar installed on you device you cant install as its zipped. Download a free RAR extractor on your PC, unpack it and you will find your CAB or files inside...... simply copy them/it to your PPC and voila
pocket rar is installed
I did zip the file to upload it, the forum would not accpt it in rar form. When I put the rar on my device ((XV6900 vogue verizon) WM6.1 ROM 3.14.605.1), I was able to unpack it but there was no cab. I upoaded it tthinking somebody would check the contents and help me out.

Sorry about that Dave, i mis-understood what you were trying to do It would help me if u gave me the link where you got the rar file as it would probably contain instructions as to where on ur device you need to copy the unzipped files to (like /windows etc). Let me know where you got the rar file from.
cant find original thread I d/l from
It was from rstoyguy
All I was basicall looking for for my phone was the Diamond Theme and the diamond dialer. I 'm pretty new to modifying my phones. I did flash the rom to the magicflo but went back. Is there a way to just THEME my current rom?
